Kerala Opens Idukki and Cheruthoni Dams to Public Tours, Offering Unprecedented Access with Strict Security and Eco-friendly Guidelines

Kerala has unveiled an exciting new opportunity for tourists, offering exclusive access to two of its most iconic and scenic landmarks—the Idukki and Cheruthoni dams. These architectural and engineering marvels, long admired for their beauty and importance, are now open for public visits, allowing tourists to walk across the dams and enjoy the stunning views of the surrounding landscapes. This move comes after years of public demand for greater access to these spectacular structures, which serve as vital sources of hydroelectric power and water management for the region.

The decision to allow tourists onto the dams was made official with the introduction of a ticket distribution system in Cheruthoni. The initiative seeks to enhance the tourism experience in the region, offering visitors a chance to explore these remarkable dams while maintaining strict guidelines to ensure safety and environmental protection.

A Unique Tourist Experience Awaits

The Idukki and Cheruthoni dams, nestled in the verdant hills of Kerala’s Western Ghats, are some of the largest and most important dams in the state. These dams not only support the region’s irrigation and power needs but also contribute to Kerala’s rich natural heritage. Now, visitors will have the chance to walk along the dam walls, providing a bird’s-eye view of the surrounding valleys, forests, and tranquil water bodies. For those who prefer a more leisurely experience, buggy cars will also be available, making the site accessible to a wider range of tourists.

With this new program, Kerala’s government aims to offer a more immersive experience that blends the majesty of nature with the ingenuity of modern engineering. Tourists can now experience the dams from up close, gaining an appreciation for both the natural beauty and the vital role these structures play in the region’s development.

Entry Guidelines and Visitor Regulations

To ensure the safety and security of both visitors and the dams, the government has put in place a range of visitor regulations. Access to the Idukki and Cheruthoni dams will be permitted daily between 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., except on Wednesdays. A daily cap of 3,750 visitors has been set to prevent overcrowding and to maintain a controlled environment at the site.

Ticket prices are affordable, with walking tours priced at ₹50 for adults and ₹30 for children. For those opting for the buggy car rides, the cost is ₹150 for adults and ₹100 for children. The introduction of a fee structure will help sustain the management and maintenance of the tourist program.

In addition to the ticketing guidelines, security measures have been established to protect both the visitors and the integrity of the dams. Visitors will be required to adhere to strict protocols, including a ban on electronic devices such as mobile phones, cameras, and other gadgets. This is to ensure the safety of the area and prevent distractions while on the premises.

Eco-friendly Protocols for Sustainable Tourism

Environmental sustainability is a key priority in this new tourism initiative. Kerala’s government has introduced a green protocol aimed at minimizing the ecological impact of tourism at the dams. Tourists are strictly prohibited from littering and are encouraged to carry their waste with them. The goal is to maintain the pristine natural environment around the dams while educating visitors on the importance of preserving local ecosystems.

This green initiative is part of Kerala’s broader commitment to responsible tourism. The Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage site, are home to rich biodiversity, and the region’s ecological balance must be preserved. By implementing these eco-friendly measures, Kerala seeks to ensure that tourism remains sustainable and that future generations can continue to enjoy the area’s natural beauty.

Economic Impact and Boost to Local Tourism

The opening of the Idukki and Cheruthoni dams to tourists is expected to provide a significant boost to the local economy. As the dams become a new tourist attraction, local businesses—including hotels, restaurants, and transport services—are likely to see an increase in customers. The rise in foot traffic will also create new job opportunities, benefiting the region’s workforce and encouraging more investment in local infrastructure.

Beyond its direct economic impact, the dams’ new visitor program will help diversify Kerala’s tourism offerings. Known for its backwaters, beaches, and hill stations, Kerala is already a popular destination for travelers, but the addition of dam tourism adds a new layer to the state’s appeal. This new form of tourism, which highlights the relationship between human-made infrastructure and the natural environment, is expected to attract both domestic and international tourists interested in exploring the engineering feats of the region.

Preserving Heritage While Promoting Tourism

By carefully managing visitor access and enforcing environmental protocols, Kerala’s government is aiming to strike a balance between tourism development and the preservation of its natural and cultural heritage. The Idukki and Cheruthoni dams are not only symbols of Kerala’s technological prowess but also essential to the region’s water supply and energy needs. Allowing the public to experience these vital structures in a controlled manner ensures that they can be appreciated by visitors without compromising their integrity.

The visitor program at the Idukki and Cheruthoni dams also underscores Kerala’s broader commitment to sustainable tourism. The state has long been recognized for its emphasis on eco-tourism, and this new initiative further reinforces its position as a responsible tourism destination. By promoting both the natural beauty and the engineering marvels of the dams, Kerala offers a unique experience that appeals to a wide range of travelers.

Looking Ahead

The opening of the Idukki and Cheruthoni dams to tourists is a welcome development for Kerala’s tourism sector. With a focus on security, environmental responsibility, and community involvement, the initiative ensures that the dams can be enjoyed by visitors while preserving their historical and ecological significance. As more tourists flock to these iconic structures, the state will continue to explore ways to enhance the visitor experience while maintaining the delicate balance between tourism and conservation. This is just the beginning of a new chapter in Kerala’s tourism journey, one that celebrates both nature and human ingenuity.

Europe Leads the Way with Ambitious EU Sustainability Project for Tourism Aimed at Addressing Environmental and Social Challenges

Europe Leads the Way with Ambitious EU Sustainability Project for Tourism Aimed at Addressing Environmental and Social Challenges

Europe is taking bold action to shape the future of tourism with the launch of an ambitious sustainability project led by the European Commission. As the tourism industry continues to grow, so too do the environmental and social pressures associated with mass travel. With an increasing demand for greener practices and responsible travel, this initiative aims to tackle the most pressing issues facing European destinations, from carbon emissions and over-tourism to cultural preservation and economic dependency. By implementing innovative solutions and fostering collaboration across borders, the EU’s new project sets out to create a more resilient and sustainable tourism model for the continent, benefiting both local communities and the global travel market. Through this visionary effort, Europe is positioning itself as a leader in the movement toward responsible, eco-conscious travel, paving the way for a more sustainable tourism landscape in the years to come.

A Strategic Framework for Sustainable Tourism

The Sustainable EU Tourism project is built around a multifaceted approach that addresses the main sustainability challenges facing European destinations. Through three core objectives—understanding challenges, promoting best practices, and fostering cross-border cooperation—the project seeks to provide tangible solutions for managing tourism in a way that minimizes its negative impacts while maximizing its benefits for both local communities and visitors.

  1. Identifying Key Challenges and Effective Solutions: At the heart of the initiative is a focus on understanding the most pressing issues affecting European destinations, such as environmental degradation, over-tourism, and economic dependence on seasonal tourism. The project highlights 50 best practices—successful sustainability initiatives already being implemented by European destinations. These examples range from carbon-neutral mobility solutions and renewable energy projects to waste reduction programs and green accommodation practices. By showcasing these practical solutions, the project aims to inspire other destinations to adopt similar strategies tailored to their unique needs.
  2. Building Collaborative Networks Among Destinations: Recognizing that many European destinations face similar challenges, the project encourages collaboration and knowledge sharing through its twinning program. By pairing destinations with similar sustainability goals, the initiative fosters peer-to-peer learning and facilitates the development of joint solutions to common challenges. Whether it’s urban centers tackling overcrowding or rural areas striving to preserve their cultural heritage, the project provides a platform for exchanging ideas, sharing experiences, and co-developing actionable plans for more sustainable tourism management.
  3. Raising Awareness and Changing Behaviors: A key aspect of the project is raising awareness about sustainability across the tourism ecosystem. The initiative encourages tourism operators to adopt sustainable practices, such as eco-friendly transport, energy-efficient facilities, and waste reduction systems, while promoting responsible tourism behaviors among travelers. By educating visitors on how their actions impact the environment and local communities, the project seeks to drive a shift toward more mindful and conscious travel, ensuring that tourism continues to benefit both travelers and the destinations they visit.

Four Core Dimensions of Sustainability

The Sustainable EU Tourism initiative is grounded in four key dimensions of sustainability: environmental, economic, socio-cultural, and governance. Each dimension plays a critical role in shaping a more resilient and responsible tourism model for the future.

  1. Environmental Sustainability: The project emphasizes reducing the ecological footprint of tourism. Strategies such as carbon-neutral transport, the use of renewable energy, and the implementation of circular economy principles for waste management are being encouraged to help destinations mitigate their environmental impact. By supporting eco-friendly initiatives, the project aims to preserve Europe’s natural landscapes and reduce the adverse effects of tourism on local ecosystems.
  2. Economic Sustainability: Tourism should contribute positively to local economies without creating over-reliance on seasonal peaks. By promoting economic diversification, encouraging year-round tourism, and supporting digital innovation, the project helps destinations strengthen their economic resilience. The goal is to create a more balanced distribution of tourism activity throughout the year and reduce dependence on traditional tourism seasons, ensuring a steady stream of income for local businesses and communities.
  3. Socio-Cultural Sustainability: The initiative places a strong emphasis on preserving the cultural integrity and authenticity of destinations. It supports community-led tourism initiatives and inclusive tourism practices that ensure local populations benefit from tourism without losing their cultural heritage. By involving local communities in tourism planning and decision-making, the project aims to maintain the cultural diversity of European destinations while ensuring that tourism provides equitable benefits to all stakeholders.
  4. Governance Sustainability: Effective governance is key to successfully managing tourism in a sustainable way. The project promotes participatory governance models that bring together stakeholders from government, industry, and local communities to collaborate on shared sustainability goals. By fostering collective decision-making, the initiative aims to ensure that tourism policies are well-coordinated and responsive to the needs of both locals and visitors, ultimately leading to more sustainable tourism outcomes.

Collaborative Solutions for Long-Term Impact

The twinned destinations initiative is one of the project’s most significant innovations, allowing destinations to connect with others facing similar challenges. By facilitating face-to-face workshops and interactive sessions, the project fosters a collaborative environment where destinations can share best practices, co-create solutions, and learn from each other’s experiences. These collaborations have already resulted in several joint projects that address issues such as carbon emissions, overcrowding, and waste management. The project’s Twinning Toolkit provides a step-by-step guide for other destinations to follow, offering clear strategies for building successful partnerships and creating shared solutions for sustainable tourism management.

A Path Toward a Sustainable Future for European Tourism

The Sustainable EU Tourism project represents a bold step forward in the effort to make European tourism more sustainable. By equipping destinations with the tools, knowledge, and partnerships needed to manage tourism responsibly, the initiative is helping to pave the way for a more resilient and sustainable tourism model across Europe. As sustainability becomes an increasingly important priority for both travelers and tourism operators, this project is positioning Europe as a leader in the global movement toward more responsible travel.

Looking to the future, the Sustainable EU Tourism initiative provides a comprehensive framework for managing tourism in a way that balances economic growth with environmental preservation and cultural respect. By adopting sustainable practices today, European destinations can ensure a thriving tourism industry that benefits local communities, protects the environment, and provides meaningful travel experiences for generations to come.

Andhra Pradesh Expands Its Global Tourism Footprint at WTM London, Promoting Responsible Travel, Cultural Richness, and Investment Opportunities

Andhra Pradesh took center stage at the World Travel Market (WTM) 2025 in London, captivating global audiences with its vibrant mix of natural wonders, cultural depth, and forward-thinking tourism vision. Held from November 4th to 6th, the international travel event brought together destinations and industry leaders from across the world, offering Andhra Pradesh the perfect platform to unveil its diverse offerings and emerging global ambitions.

The state’s presence at WTM London symbolized a defining moment in its tourism journey. Known for its breathtaking coastline, ancient temples, and serene hill regions, Andhra Pradesh presented itself as a destination that seamlessly blends tradition, adventure, and modern hospitality. Its participation reaffirmed a growing commitment to promote responsible travel, community empowerment, and inclusive growth that benefits both visitors and locals.

The Andhra Pradesh pavilion, designed in collaboration with the Indian Ministry of Tourism, became a standout feature of the event. Adorned with colorful imagery, interactive exhibits, and cultural displays, the pavilion transported visitors into the heart of the state’s heritage. From the rhythmic movements of classical dancers to the aroma of locally brewed coffee, every detail reflected the essence of Andhra Pradesh — authentic, soulful, and full of character.

Among the destinations highlighted, Gandikota emerged as a major attraction. Popularly known as the “Grand Canyon of India,” its spectacular rock formations and fort architecture drew strong interest from international travelers. The showcase of Gandikota reflected the state’s growing focus on promoting lesser-explored destinations that offer a perfect mix of adventure and history. It represented the evolving image of Andhra Pradesh — not just as a spiritual heartland, but also as a destination for outdoor exploration and natural beauty.

In addition to destination promotion, Andhra Pradesh used the global platform to strengthen its presence in the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) sector. The state’s delegates engaged in discussions with tour operators, hotel groups, investors, and travel media, exploring opportunities for large-scale tourism investments and global partnerships. This outreach reinforced the state’s readiness to welcome international business events and expand its tourism infrastructure in line with global standards.

Cultural heritage formed the emotional centerpiece of Andhra Pradesh’s participation. The pavilion hosted captivating Kuchipudi dance performances that mesmerized visitors with expressive storytelling and intricate movements. Each performance highlighted the state’s long-standing tradition of art and dance, emphasizing how culture remains central to its identity. The energy, grace, and elegance of the performers created a lasting impression, connecting the audience to Andhra Pradesh’s artistic soul.

To complement these performances, the pavilion offered visitors an authentic taste of Araku coffee, grown in the misty highlands of the Eastern Ghats. Known for its rich flavor and sustainable cultivation methods, Araku coffee represents the fusion of community livelihood and environmental consciousness. Guests who sampled it were introduced to the story behind the beans — one rooted in eco-tourism and empowerment of local farmers.

Adding a handcrafted touch, dignitaries and visitors received Etikoppaka toys, colorful wooden artworks crafted by artisans from the namesake village. Bearing the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, these toys symbolize Andhra Pradesh’s dedication to preserving its artisanal traditions while encouraging rural creativity and craftsmanship. Their presence at WTM underscored how local heritage and artistry play an essential role in shaping the state’s global tourism narrative.

Through its engaging presentation, Andhra Pradesh projected a clear and confident tourism strategy focused on sustainability, authenticity, and global collaboration. Its display emphasized the need to balance economic development with ecological preservation, ensuring that tourism growth supports communities while protecting natural and cultural assets. This approach aligned perfectly with the global shift toward meaningful, eco-conscious travel experiences.

Beyond the impressive showcase, Andhra Pradesh’s participation also represented India’s broader tourism aspirations. As international travelers seek destinations that offer both authenticity and modern comfort, Andhra Pradesh demonstrated how regional diversity can enrich the global perception of Indian tourism. With its spiritual centers, scenic valleys, and growing infrastructure, the state positioned itself as an emerging powerhouse within India’s tourism ecosystem.

The state’s success at WTM London 2025 marked more than just an exhibition — it was a statement of vision and purpose. It reflected a renewed determination to build a globally recognized identity rooted in heritage, innovation, and sustainability. By combining natural beauty with cultural pride and responsible tourism principles, Andhra Pradesh is steadily carving out a distinctive place for itself on the world map.

As global travelers seek deeper, more authentic experiences, Andhra Pradesh’s journey toward becoming an international tourism hub seems both timely and inevitable. With every performance, every handcrafted souvenir, and every conversation at WTM London, the state reaffirmed its promise — to welcome the world with its timeless charm, rich traditions, and boundless potential.

Air Canada Enhances Passenger Experience with Fourth Café Opening at Vancouver Airport Reflecting Local Culture and Design: Know More

Air Canada continues to enhance the airport experience with the opening of its fourth Air Canada Café, now available for travellers at Vancouver International Airport (YVR).

Situated in the domestic terminal between Gates C46 and C47, the new Café draws inspiration from Vancouver’s scenic landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and strong sense of community. The space offers eligible passengers a welcoming spot to unwind, recharge, or enjoy a curated selection of grab-and-go meals that capture the essence of the city.

Covering 2,142 square feet (about 138 square metres), the Café combines comfort with culinary creativity. Guests can savour locally inspired options ranging from iconic Nanaimo bars to innovative Asian-infused snacks, complemented by a range of self-serve beverages designed for convenience and quality.

Designed with both relaxation and productivity in mind, the lounge features power outlets at every seat, allowing travellers to stay connected while recharging. Access is simple for eligible customers through eGate boarding pass scanning, creating a seamless and efficient journey.

“This new space is all about offering guests a thoughtful blend of modern amenities and cozy vibes, while celebrating the beauty and spirit of Vancouver,” said Jacqueline Harkness, Managing Director, Product & Services at Air Canada. “We hope the Air Canada Café becomes a go-to place for our customers to unwind and recharge, making their time at YVR even more enjoyable.”

The menu stands as a tribute to Vancouver’s culinary identity, celebrating a city defined by its diversity, innovation, and profound bond with nature. Crafted around seasonal and locally sourced ingredients, each dish captures an authentic sense of place, offering travellers a genuine taste of the region’s flavour and spirit.

Enhancing the atmosphere, the Café features an exclusive collection of four original artworks by Vancouver-based Chinese-Canadian artist Scott Sueme. His vibrant compositions merge abstract forms, symbols, and expressive text to explore themes of connection, identity, and the natural world. Drawing from his background as a street artist, Sueme’s work reflects the creative energy and cultural depth of Vancouver—values that align seamlessly with Air Canada’s celebration of West Coast artistry and expression.

“Collaborating on the Vancouver concept for this new Air Canada Café has been a true highlight for us,” Par Bain, Director of Hospitality at, Vancouver’s Smart Design, the company that designed the café. “With design elements like the fuselage-inspired ceiling and natural curves, we crafted a space that strikes a balance between precision and organic forms, reflecting Vancouver’s unique character and the geometry of aviation.”

“We are thrilled to welcome the Air Canada Café to YVR, which enhances our lounge offering and provides another option for passengers to dine, relax and recharge,” said Benedict Ma, Director, Passenger Retail Experience at Vancouver International Airport. “The Café’s selection of local flavours and global cuisine within our sense of place to offer our customers an experience that is uniquely Vancouver and expands the opportunity for passengers to enjoy the best our city has to offer, right here at the airport.”

The new Café offers a thoughtfully curated menu that reflects both Vancouver’s local charm and global influences. Travellers can enjoy premium grab-and-go options such as Japanese-inspired matcha and white chocolate overnight oats, the iconic Lee’s Donuts, house-made Vietnamese nems (pork and vegetable spring rolls), and a Korean-style crispy chicken burger.

Every dish is designed to meet diverse dietary needs, with transparent ingredient and allergen information accessible through a quick QR code scan—reinforcing Air Canada’s dedication to inclusivity and passenger well-being.

The beverage list features local favourites, including craft beer and seltzer from Vancouver’s Persephone Brewing, Nitro cold brew served on tap, and a selection of milk alternatives such as oat, almond, and soy, ensuring something for every preference.

Amenities and Comfort-Focused Space

The 2,142-square-foot (approximately 138-square-metre) space can accommodate up to 52 guests in a premium setting designed for both relaxation and productivity. Seating options include high-top counters and comfortable workspace layouts, complemented by power outlets and USB-C ports at every seat—powerful enough to charge laptops with ease.

Signature Vancouver-Inspired Design

Developed in collaboration with local firm Smart Design, the Café’s aesthetic blends subtle aviation elements with Vancouver’s distinctive natural character. Artistic highlights include a series of original pieces by Vancouver-based artist Scott Sueme, whose contemporary style brings colour and movement to the space.

The interior features a dramatic fuselage-inspired ceiling that pays homage to flight, while light fixtures—shaped to resemble smooth river rocks—were created by A-N-D Light, a local decorative luminaire studio, adding a natural West Coast touch.

Access and Eligibility

The Air Canada Café at Vancouver International Airport welcomes eligible Air Canada travellers flying in Business Class, Aeroplan 50K, 75K, and Super Elite Status Members, as well as Star Alliance Gold customers and Aeroplan premium co-brand cardholders.

This marks the fourth location in Air Canada’s growing Café network, joining existing venues at Toronto Pearson International Airport, Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (in partnership with Aspire), and Montréal-Trudeau International Airport.

Commitment to Elevated Travel Experiences

Air Canada continues to redefine the airport experience through modern, guest-focused lounge spaces that emphasize comfort, design, and convenience. By the end of 2025, the airline plans to add over 500 new lounge seats worldwide, expanding capacity and upgrading amenities. This growth builds upon a series of recent enhancements that have introduced refreshed designs, improved seating comfort, and more accessible power options across its global lounge network.
