Dortmund have defensive woes ahead of last 2025 match v Gladbach

Borussia Dortmund want to end 2025 on a high after two setbacks but have defensive woes ahead of Friday's Bundesliga match against Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Waldemar Anton and Aaron Anselmino are injured and Algeria's Ramy Bensebaini has left for the Africa Cup of Nations, which could open the door for a return of Niklas Süle.
Süle was sidelined for weeks with a toe problem but came on in stoppage time of Sunday's 1-1 draw at Freiburg.
"Niki took a long time. He was injured for longer than we had anticipated. He is training hard again. He makes a good impression in my opinion and is certainly an alternative," coach Niko Kovac told reporters on Thursday.
Dortmund will also be without Jobe Bellingham who was sent off against Freiburg after which Dortmund conceded the equalizer. The draw came a few days after they were also held, 2-2 by Norway's Bodö/Glimt, in the Champions League.
But Dortmund have played a good first part of the season overall, far more consistent than in the same period last year. They rank third in the Bundesliga, tied on points with second-placed RB Leipzig, and direct last 16 qualification is possible in the Champions League.
"We have had a good development as a team and are better off than last year," said Kovac, who was appointed in February.
Gladbach have recovered from a terrible start to move into midfield and Kovac will take nothing for granted.
"Gladbach have stabilised and have made good progress recently. They are a difficult team to play against and will defend well. Our clear ambition is to win the last game of 2025," Kovac said.
