Wakan Village in Oman to Benefit from New Cable Car System for Improved Accessibility

Wakan Village in Oman to Benefit from New Cable Car System for Improved Accessibility

The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism is currently assessing a new cable car project that will improve tourist access to Wakan Village, which is in the beautiful Nakhal area of South Batinah in Oman. The project will create a contemporary system that will reduce traffic problems which emerge from the mountain roads that lead to the village located at 2000 meters above sea level.

Rising Tourism Demand in Wakan Village

In 2025, Wakan Village recorded an impressive 40,000 visitors, marking a significant rise in its tourism numbers. The village is renowned for its unique agricultural terraces, as well as its cool climate, making it a favourite destination for nature enthusiasts and those looking for a tranquil getaway. Additionally, the annual blossoming of apricot and plum trees between January and February attracts visitors from across the world, further boosting its appeal as a top tourist destination.

The planned cable car service will allow visitors to reach this picturesque location comfortably, bypassing the challenging mountain ascent. As the village continues to grow as a tourism hotspot, the new project will ensure that accessibility is improved while preserving the area’s natural charm.

Cable Car System to Alleviate Congestion

Currently, visitors who make the trek to Wakan Village are faced with a physically demanding climb, which involves navigating 700 steps to reach the summit. This can be strenuous for many, particularly during the peak tourist seasons. The introduction of a cable car system will not only provide a quicker and more convenient option but will also reduce the environmental impact of road traffic on the mountain paths.

The cable car project is part of a broader initiative to improve the tourism infrastructure in Oman, enhancing accessibility to its most famous destinations. Dr Al Mu’atasim Nasser al Hilali, Director of the Heritage and Tourism Department in South Batinah, confirmed that the cable car will be a key component of the government’s plans to increase the number of visitors to the region while preserving the area’s cultural and natural heritage.

Preserving Cultural Heritage While Promoting Tourism

The project also aims to integrate local heritage into the broader tourism experience. In addition to the cable car, the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism is working closely with local communities to transform traditional homes into heritage lodges and guesthouses. This initiative is designed to provide authentic experiences for visitors while ensuring that local culture and traditions are preserved.

Moreover, the government is improving the existing mountain paths by adding safety guardrails and rest areas, which will benefit those who prefer hiking. These enhancements will help strike a balance between promoting eco-tourism and maintaining the region’s natural beauty. Visitors will be able to enjoy the best of both worlds, modern amenities combined with traditional Omani hospitality.

Economic and Social Impact of the Project

The cable car system is expected to have a positive impact on the local economy by increasing the flow of visitors to the area. By providing easier access to Wakan Village, the project will enhance tourism revenue, encourage local employment, and promote regional economic growth. The partnership with the local community will also help create sustainable opportunities for small businesses and entrepreneurs, further enriching the local economy.

As part of its efforts to develop regional tourism, Oman is focusing on projects that integrate modern infrastructure with the preservation of natural landscapes. The cable car initiative will be one of several projects that aim to elevate the country’s standing as a sustainable tourist destination while contributing to its economic recovery.

Enhancing Wakan Village’s Tourism Appeal

The cable car project in Wakan Village will provide significant benefits to both tourists and the local community. By improving accessibility and safety, the project will make it easier for visitors to explore the beauty and heritage of this unique destination. With the introduction of modern infrastructure such as the cable car system and the revitalisation of traditional homes, Wakan Village will continue to attract tourists while preserving its rich cultural legacy.

Oman Universal Tour Development Project will use the Wakan Village cable car system to establish sustainable travel connections, which will help Oman become a top eco-friendly tourism destination in the Gulf region.

Jersey Boys and Beetlejuice Ended by Norwegian Cruise Line to Make Way for New Entertainment

Jersey Boys and Beetlejuice Ended by Norwegian Cruise Line to Make Way for New Entertainment

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has announced the closure of two Broadway-style productions across its fleet as part of a broader shift in its entertainment offerings. The iconic “Jersey Boys” and the recent hit “Beetlejuice: The Musical” will both conclude their runs in 2026 aboard Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Viva, respectively. These closures reflect NCL’s multi-year initiative to revitalise its entertainment lineup and focus on offering original programming for its guests.

The departure of “Jersey Boys”, which has been running since 2018 on the Norwegian Bliss, and “Beetlejuice”, which debuted on Norwegian Viva in 2023, marks the continuation of NCL’s strategic transition. The company aims to move away from Broadway adaptations and instead expand its portfolio of unique and diverse entertainment options.

Strategic Shift in Onboard Entertainment

The decision to retire two beloved Broadway shows is part of NCL’s new focus on introducing original programming that aligns with the preferences of today’s cruisers. As part of this shift, NCL plans to enhance its fleet’s entertainment by expanding existing shows like “Choir of Man” and “Syd Norman’s Presents: Rumours”, both of which will appear on more ships in the coming months.

NCL previously ended several other Broadway productions, such as “Summer: The Donna Summer Musical”, “Six”, “Footloose”, and “Kinky Boots”, as part of its evolving entertainment strategy. This move reflects NCL’s understanding of changing passenger interests, where guests are increasingly seeking a broader variety of entertainment options.

An Opportunity for New, Diverse Performances

Athanasios Titonis, CEO of Aboitiz InfraCapital, which oversees the NCL brand, emphasised that the decision to phase out some Broadway hits allows the company to invest in more diverse shows and daily activities that appeal to a broader demographic. By shifting away from these extensive Broadway shows, NCL has the opportunity to provide more spontaneous, interactive experiences for passengers.

The closure of “Jersey Boys” on Norwegian Bliss will take place during a seven-day voyage from Los Angeles on February 8, 2026, while “Beetlejuice” will finish its run on Norwegian Viva on March 21, 2026, during a sailing from Galveston, Texas. Both ships will then undergo adjustments to incorporate new forms of onboard entertainment, likely including comedy acts, musical performances, themed events, and more.

Expansion of Original Programming

One of NCL’s key initiatives is to focus on original shows such as “The Choir of Man”, which has been met with positive reviews for its unique blend of music, energy, and audience interaction. This show, along with “Syd Norman’s Presents: Rumours”, will be featured across more ships, reflecting a shift towards entertainment that is both engaging and distinctly NCL.

While Broadway-style productions have their place in cruise entertainment, the shift to shorter, original programming allows for greater flexibility, offering passengers a variety of experiences that don’t require months of planning. Guests can expect more intimate performances and themed entertainment options that align with the growing demand for interactive, spontaneous events on board.

Impact on Passengers and the Cruise Industry

This shift towards original content is not only about entertainment but also reflects a broader trend in the cruise industry where companies are reimagining passenger experiences. With passengers now expecting more diverse, flexible, and unique activities, NCL’s move can be seen as a direct response to these evolving expectations.

The company remains committed to delivering high-quality theatre productions alongside other activities that enrich the cruise experience. NCL’s focus is now on offering a mix of onboard entertainment that aligns with the variety of interests passengers have when they board the ship.

A New Era of Cruise Entertainment

Norwegian Cruise Line’s decision to phase out two iconic Broadway productions in 2026 signals the start of a new era in cruise entertainment. By embracing original programming and expanding its range of interactive shows, NCL is ensuring that it remains at the forefront of innovative entertainment for cruise passengers. This shift will allow the company to continue offering engaging, dynamic experiences while adapting to the changing needs of today’s traveller.

NCL will deliver enhanced entertainment experiences to its guests. Norwegian Cruise Line will introduce new entertainment options that include comedic performances and musical showcases, and special themed events to enhance passenger enjoyment of their time at sea.
