The Vikings have requested to interview a crucial Lions front office member for their general manager job

The Vikings will be interviewing someone very high up in the Lions’ front office for their FM job

This one felt like a forgone conclusion for the Detroit Lions. When the Minnesota Vikings fired Kwesi Adofo-Mensah in January, you had to know at some point they would look to interview someone from the Lions and any/or of their NFC North rivals.

The Vikings have requested to interview Lions’ assistant GM Ray Agnew for their GM job

The Vikings requested interviews with Lions assistant GM Ray Agnew, Broncos assistant GM Reed Burckhardt and Dolphins assistant GM Kyle Smith for their general manager job, sources say.

Minnesota's initial round of virtual interviews is underway and the list has now expanded.

It's actually pretty crazy that Agnew is not already a general manager somewhere. This is a person who has been a significant contributor to building two of the best programs in the league. He was the Rams' director of pro personnel on their ascent to two Super Bowl appearances and one win. Yes, he was in Detroit in 2021 when the Rams got that win, but his fingerprints were all over it. As was Brad Holmes'

In Detroit, he's helped Holmes scout and build the team you see today. The Lions have gone from one of the worst franchises in the league to perennial Super Bowl contenders. Yes, they're still that, even though this is a "the sky is falling" week for Lions fans.

Despite all of that, this is the first reported interview request we’ve seen for Agnew, and it makes no sense at all. The only potential excuse is that he's older than most GMs, and when you look at who's been getting hired, it's usually these young hot shots who have been working their way up the ladder. Still, that's pretty ridiculous.

The Vikings are casting a pretty wide net, so we’ll see what happens in due time. They’re probably not going to make a decision until later in the month or in June. If Agnew is gone, that’s a big loss for Detroit.

The Kings Should Trade for Ja Morant

The Memphis Grizzlies are reportedly open to moving star point guard Ja Morant. The Sacramento Kings, having already shown interest at the deadline, could be a possible destination. If the deal is centered around Zach LaVine, the move could make sense for both sides.

Why It Works for Sacramento

Ja Morant is one of the most explosive guards in the league, capable of putting constant pressure on the rim and creating offense for others. Across his career, he has averaged more than 22 points and 7 assists per game, producing at a level few guards can match. Additionally, he gives Sacramento something they do not currently have.

The Kings have lacked consistent downhill creation from the guard position since De’Aaron Fox’s departure. Morant would immediately address this issue by opening up opportunities for shooters and making the offense less predictable.

His ability to attack the paint and force defensive rotations adds a level of nuance that this Sacramento offense lacks. He also possesses upside beyond the numbers, as he has already shown that he can be a franchise-level player. Despite recent turmoil in Memphis, a change of scenery could help him return to that level.

Why It Works for Memphis

Moving Morant would allow the Grizzlies to reset their timeline and clear long-term salary. His contract, which extends into the 2027-28 season, carries significant financial weight. Moving it now opens flexibility for the future.

In return, Memphis would get LaVine, a proven scorer on a shorter-term deal. While LaVine carries a high salary, his contract structure is more manageable in the long run.

The Financial Fit

LaVine is set to earn $48.9 million if he picks up his player option. Meanwhile, Morant will make $42.1 million this season and $44.8 million the following year. Sacramento would take on an additional year’s worth of salary, but at a slightly lower annual value. If the Kings are dead set on upgrading the backcourt, taking on Morant’s contract would be a reasonable tradeoff.

If the trade were to go through, Memphis would still be about $9 million under the salary cap. As for Sacramento, they would be able to get under the luxury tax threshold for this upcoming season.

The Ja Morant to Sacramento is a real thing, it’s not just smoke, per @James_HamNBA.

Do you want Ja in Sacramento even if the Kings get a guard in the draft? pic.twitter.com/nyPZzNSfVf

— Kings Lead (@KingsLeadSM) May 12, 2026

The Draft Factor

This decision also depends on how Sacramento approaches the 2026 draft.

If they were to draft a guard, the equation changes, as Morant would no longer be filling as much of a need. However, if the Kings are able to land a forward such as Cameron Boozer or Caleb Wilson, the search for a lead guard would likely continue. In that scenario, adding Morant makes even more sense, as he would step into that role immediately.

The Risk

There is risk involved with this move, as Morant’s recent seasons have included injuries and inconsistency. Additionally, his three-point shooting remains a question. Those concerns cannot be ignored.

At the same time, though, his ceiling is clear. When healthy and playing at his best, Morant is a player who can carry an offense and dictate the pace of a game. That level of talent is not easy to acquire.

The Bottom Line

This is a move Sacramento should seriously consider. Morant gives the Kings a different kind of offensive engine, one that could elevate the team’s ceiling.

The talent is there, and the opportunity is there. Only one question remains: is Sacramento willing to make the move?

J.J. McCarthy still in consideration for starting job over Kyler Murray

The Minnesota Vikings added veteran quarterback Kyler Murray to the depth chart this offseason after J.J. McCarthy struggled to stay healthy and produce when he was on the field last season.

However, the Vikings aren’t handing the starting job to Murray, according to NFL insider Tom Pelissero, and McCarthy can win the starting job over Murray in what is expected to be a “true competition” between the two of them.

“They envision it being a true competition: Kyler Murray versus J.J. McCarthy,” Pelissero said during an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show. “And both these guys are going to go into this believing they’re gonna win this job. I don’t know, frankly, how friendly that quarterback room is going to be. It’s going to be a very competitive quarterback room.

“From everything that I’ve understood, it is truly wide open, they’re keeping an open mind as a coaching staff.”

Murray is coming off his own health concerns, after his season with the Arizona Cardinals last season was marred by a foot injury that cost him the bulk of the campaign.

It’s clear that the Vikings organization has little patience for a rebuild after watching former quarterback Sam Darnold lead the Seattle Seahawks to a Super Bowl victory last season. So, in what figures to be a completely merit-based approach to the most important position, whoever is ready to produce at the highest level will earn the job in Minnesota.
