India plays its first test since losing twice to visiting South Africa in November for the Freedom Trophy, matches that also counted in the 2025-27 World Test Championship. Shubman Gill serves as captain for the Men in Blue, ranked third in the world by the International Cricket Council. Yashasvi Jaiswal enters the match as India’s top-ranked batter at No. 8 in the world, while top-ranked bowler Jasprit Bumrah was not selected for the series due to workload management concerns.

Afghanistan did not play the required eight tests over the three-year cycle to qualify for the ICC rankings and played its last match in the format in October 2025, losing by an innings and 73 runs during its tour of Zimbabwe. Hashmatullah Shahidi captains the side.

India and Afghanistan have met just once before in the test format, which entails a minimum of 90 overs to be bowled in six hours per day. The Men in Blue won the test in June 2018 in Bengaluru. Afghanistan’s current tour of India continues with three one-day international matches set for June 13, 17, and 20.

This is a great test cricket matchup that you will not want to miss; make sure to tune in and catch all the action.

India vs Afghanistan Test live win probability, prediction, odds and chances of victory at New Chandigarh

India will lock horns with Afghanistan in a one-off Test match at the New PCA Cricket Stadium in Mullan, New Chandigarh.

The two sides have met only once in Test matches in the historic game in 2018, when Afghanistan made their debut as a Test nation. Back then, India had comfortably won the one-off game.

India's performance in Test matches has been far from ideal under Gautam Gambhir's tutelage as they are yet to win a Test series against a major opponent.

In fact, since Gambhir arrived as the head coach, India have lost two home Test series against New Zealand and South Africa and both were whitewashes.

India have named a full-strength squad, led by captain Shubman Gill, although star pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been rested for the Test match.
