Jamie Carragher expects Thomas Tuchel to send “message” with big call for England vs Croatia

10 June 2026 at 13:55

Jamie Carragher says he expects Thomas Tuchel will look to send a “message” to his squad by selecting Morgan Rogers over Jude Bellingham for England’s opening World Cup 2026 game.

Tuchel has one particularly big call to make for the Croatia game, with both Bellingham and Rogers in contention for an attacking midfield spot.

Bellingham is the bigger name and more proven talent at this level, having won silverware with Real Madrid, and with 47 caps to his name, while Rogers has just 13.

Jude Bellingham or Morgan Rogers?

Still, Rogers is in fine form at the moment and would arguably deserve a place in the England starting line up on merit, with Carragher expecting Tuchel to send that message.

The German tactician has already shown he’s prepared to leave big names out by not even including the likes of Phil Foden and Cole Palmer in his squad, so could we now see him set the tone for this tournament by leaving Bellingham out?

“It’s the World Cup. It’s about winning,” Carragher said on The Overlap on YouTube. “But I think the way you saw him deal with Bellingham, leaving Palmer out and Foden. It’s almost like a message to the rest of the (squad), you know what – he’s the manager. He’s going to make big decisions. I think he’ll start with Rogers.”

Jude Bellingham vs Morgan Rogers stats

It’s not an easy debate for England, but it’s probably fair to say that there’s some sense in gambling with Rogers over Bellingham right now.

See below for a comparison of their stats for club and country this season…

Player Games Goals Assists
Jude Bellingham 54 9 7
Morgan Rogers 66 14 12

Bellingham is a fine player who can surely still have an impact at this World Cup, but for now the more in-form attacker is Rogers, and it seems very harsh not to make him a starter.

Worry for Arsenal and England as Thomas Tuchel reveals star has been playing through injury

10 June 2026 at 10:57

England manager Thomas Tuchel has admitted he’ll have to be a bit careful with the fitness of Bukayo Saka at the World Cup after he played through injury for Arsenal recently.

The Gunners star has just celebrated winning the Premier League title with his club, but he also didn’t quite hit his peak form at any point in the season just gone.

On his day, Saka is a world class attacking player who has shown his value to the England national team, but it seems Tuchel is aware he doesn’t have a fully fit player on his hands.

Speaking at his latest press conference, as quoted by BBC Sport, Tuchel provided some insight into Saka’s situation and his availability for this summer’s World Cup.

Thomas Tuchel on Bukayo Saka’s fitness

“We still have to take a little bit of care for Bukayo who had an injury in March and carried it through the club campaign,” Tuchel said.

“He made himself available at the end of the season and did so brilliantly, but he was managed in between matches. That continues a bit at the moment – we are building him up.

“We just came from training and everyone was involved including Bukayo.”

What other options do England have?

If Saka ends up missing games for England, Tuchel can at least call on a number of other decent options in the attacking midfield department.

Noni Madueke is a like-for-like option as a left-footed winger who plays on the right, but the Three Lions could also experiment with others like Marcus Rashford and Anthony Gordon out there.

Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze are probably also versatile enough to fill in there if required, so England shouldn’t be too reliant on Saka, even if it would undoubtedly be better to have him playing as many games as possible.

The 24-year-old has 14 goals in 48 England caps, including two at the last World Cup and one at Euro 2024 two years ago.
