Manchester United have entered the race to sign Crystal Palace’s England international defender Marc Guehi, according to TBR Football, joining a growing list of top European clubs eager to land the highly sought-after centre-back when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Guehi, 25, has reportedly made the decision not to renew his deal with Palace, opening the door for one of the most competitive free-agent battles in recent memory.

His contract situation means that, come the summer, the composed and intelligent defender will be available on a free transfer, attracting attention from nearly every major club in England and several of Europe’s elite.

The England international came close to joining Liverpool in the summer transfer window. He even had a medical ahead of a potential move to Anfield but Palace pulled the plug in the final moments and the defender ended up staying at Selhurst Park.

The Merseyside club still remain interested in the centre-back. Clubs including Chelsea, Manchester City, Tottenham, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich have all expressed serious interest in recent months.

Now, Man United, who are actively seeking long-term defensive reinforcements, have joined the pursuit.

Football journalist Graeme Bailey described Guehi’s situation as one of the standout transfer stories of the upcoming window.

“I said months ago that Marc Guehi is going to be one of the most in-demand Bosman free transfers of all-time, and that is how it is shaping up.

“Every major club in England, now including Manchester United, are keen, whilst abroad, it is a who’s who of world football from Real Madrid and Barcelona to Bayern Munich and Inter Milan. He is going to have his pick.

“But I am told as relaxed as he is on the pitch, he mirrors that off the pitch, but that is another big part of his appeal. His character is a huge reason why all these clubs have no qualms about going for him.”

Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on the future of Liverpool winger Federico Chiesa.

The Italian started the season impressively for the Reds, often making an impact after coming on from the bench.

However, he has still found it difficult to get playing time under Arne Slot this season.

The former Juventus man was linked with a move away from Anfield in the summer transfer window but he changed his mind and decided to stay at the club to prove himself.

It hasn’t worked well for him so far and despite the manager appreciating the player’s form and efforts, that has not translated into playing time.

Federico Chiesa is looking for more playing time

Slot favours Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo for his wide positions and even with the club struggling recently, Chiesa found it difficult to get playing time.

Unless his situation changes at Liverpool, a January exit could be on the cards and Romano has claimed that he would not be surprised if Italian clubs return for the winger in the January transfer window in two months.

Romano said on the Here We Go podcast:

“It’s been a strange start to the season for Chiesa, also because at the very beginning of the summer window, the plan was to leave, and then everything changed several times with Arne Slot and with the management.

“The desire of Federico Chiesa is to finish the season at Liverpool and then assess the situation in the summer. When Chiesa goes public and says ‘I want to stay here, I want to compete for my spot’, it’s the reality. Chiesa wants to continue with Liverpool.

“Then, obviously, he wants to play – he needs to play – otherwise in January I would not be surprised if Italian clubs return to the table and try again to get Chiesa from Liverpool. They might try. But at the moment, the desire of Liverpool and Chiesa is to continue together. I don’t think it’s going to be an easy move in January, but interest remains and we have to follow the game time in the next two months.”

Chiesa’s Liverpool future remains uncertain

Although the player hopes to continue at Liverpool, his situation could change soon.

Chiesa wants to prove himself by playing and want to return to the national team squad under coach Gennaro Gattuso.

With the World Cup coming next year, Chiesa is targeting a place in the Italy squad and for that to happen, he needs more playing time at Liverpool.

Slot’s management of the Italian winger has not been the best. Despite the struggles of current players this season, Slot has not been able to integrate Chiesa in the team when it was the best opportunity to do that.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has fired back at recent criticism from Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney, dismissing claims that the Reds have lacked leadership this season as “lazy.”

The Liverpool centre-back has come under the spotlight this season after his team’s poor performances.

The Reds lost four league games in a row and from leading the Premier League table, they are now seven points behind Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal.

Rooney, speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show last week, questioned the attitude and body language of Liverpool’s senior players, particularly Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, suggesting that their demeanor on the pitch has not been up to the standard expected of leaders.

“Their body language this term isn’t right,” the former England striker remarked, pointing to what he perceived as a drop in intensity and authority among Liverpool’s key figures.

However, following Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Aston Villa at Anfield, Van Dijk was quick to defend both himself and his teammates, insisting that the team’s unity and collective effort remain as strong as ever.

“I didn’t hear him last year,” the Dutchman told reporters with a smile, as reported by the Daily Mail.

“It doesn’t hurt me, to be honest. I feel like, just to come back to this particular player, he’s obviously a legend, a big player of the game who inspired so many. I can only say positive things, but I feel that comment is just a bit of a lazy criticism. That’s my personal opinion.”

Van Dijk went on to emphasise that football is a team effort, and leadership cannot be judged solely by visible emotion or on-pitch gestures.

“It’s easy to blame players when things don’t go perfectly, but he knows, as well as anyone, that we do it together. We’re all trying to help each other and push forward,” he added.

“When things go well, you don’t hear that kind of talk at all. It is what it is, pundits have to do their job, and everyone is entitled to an opinion. There are no hard feelings, and I don’t take it personally.”

Reports surfaced in the last few days linking the West Ham United playmaker with a move to Old Trafford.

Since joining West Ham from Olympique Lyonnais in the summer of 2022, Paquetá has established himself as one of the most technically gifted midfielders in the Premier League.

Romano also stressed that while Paquetá fits the profile of player United need, financial constraints could complicate any potential move.

“Paquetá could be very interesting in terms of role and quality,” he added. “But financially, West Ham are not going to give him away for cheap.”

Man United’s priority in January remains a defensive midfielder, with Paquetá’s attacking profile viewed as a secondary target for the summer.

“We have not had any discussions on the January window.

“We’re too focused on the amount of games we have. That will take focus for now.

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has voiced doubts about Benjamin Sesko’s early performances at Old Trafford, claiming the £74 million summer signing from RB Leipzig still has a long way to go to justify his hefty price tag.

Speaking after United’s 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest, Neville told NBC Sports that “the jury is out” on the 21-year-old striker, who he believes has looked “awkward” and “well off it” compared to other new arrivals in the Premier League.

Sesko’s move to Man United was part of Ruben Amorim’s aggressive rebuild, coming after the Portuguese manager missed out on Viktor Gyökeres, who instead completed a £64 million switch to Arsenal.

Despite the excitement surrounding his arrival, Sesko has found the transition to English football challenging, scoring just two goals in 11 appearances so far this season.

Neville, known for his forthright analysis, didn’t hold back in his assessment.
