Sandro Tonali delivers response following claims of Newcastle ‘gentleman’s agreement’

Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali did his talking on the pitch last night as he helped Italy to an important 2-0 win over Northern Ireland.

Tonali scored the opening goal in some style as Italy eventually broke down a resilient Northern Ireland side, and it was the perfect response from the Magpies star after constant transfer gossip over his future dominating recent headlines.

Sandro Tonali transfer timeline

  • 6th March – Arsenal chief Andrea Berta working on a deal for Tonali, according to Tuttosport.
  • 12th March – Tonali part of three-man list of midfield targets for Man Utd, according to the Sun.
  • 19th March – United have made calls to ask about Tonali‘s situation, according to Fabrizio Romano on his YouTube channel.
  • 24th March – Tonali wanted by both United and Man City but prefers a return to Serie A, according to talkSPORT.

As well as that, the Shields Gazette have reported on Tonali and Newcastle having a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ over his future, which the club have denied.

Sandro Tonali lets his football do the talking

Tonali has done well to put the speculation to one side, with the 25-year-old playing a key role in helping his country one step closer to World Cup qualification.

Newcastle fans will no doubt still be keen to hear a more positive update on Tonali, whose agent seems to be doing his bit to fuel speculation at any given opportunity.

Still, NUFC fans can also expect more quality displays from Tonali if last night’s performance is anything to go by, and that can only be good news.

Formal approach prepared: Man Utd rival Arsenal for midfielder who’s moved to the top of their list

Manchester United are reportedly expected to make a formal approach for the transfer of Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali this summer.

Speculation surrounding Tonali’s future is hotting up, with some key recent updates emerging on the Italy international’s situation:

  • 6th March – Arsenal chief Andrea Berta working on a deal for Tonali, according to Tuttosport.
  • 12th March – Tonali part of three-man list of midfield targets for Man Utd, according to the Sun.
  • 19th March – United have made calls to ask about Tonali‘s situation, according to Fabrizio Romano on his YouTube channel.
  • 24th March – Tonali wanted by both United and Man City but prefers a return to Serie A, according to talkSPORT.

And now, it seems Tonali is expected to be the subject of an approach from MUFC at the end of the season as he’s worked his way above Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton on the Red Devils’ list of targets in that position, according to the Daily Mail.

Should Manchester United be targeting Sandro Tonali?

Tonali is a fine player and it makes sense that he’s been considered by the likes of United and Arsenal.

At the same time, however, it’s not that clear to us why he’d be a priority at Old Trafford, with players like Anderson and Wharton looking like superior talents, who are also younger so would be better long-term options.

Overall, Tonali just looks too expensive to be worthwhile, but perhaps the issue is the availability of other targets.

Anderson, for instance, has been linked with United by BBC Sport, but they’ve also been among the outlets to name City as the frontrunners at this stage.

Even if Tonali is not ideal, he’s still a top player who’s proven himself in the Premier League, and it’s a position United desperately need to strengthen in as Casemiro will be leaving this summer and Manuel Ugarte has proven a major flop.

Three-man shortlist: Man United have targets in mind to replace Casemiro

Manchester United have identified their midfield targets as they look for a long term replacement of Brazilian midfielder Casemiro.

The midfield icon is set to leave the Premier League giants at the end of the season after announcing the news of his departure earlier this year.

Casemiro has played a crucial role in the Man United midfield in the last few seasons and with him leaving the club, the Red Devils are now targeting players of similar profile in the transfer market.

According to the Daily Mail, Man United have a three-man shortlist to replace Casemiro and that list includes: Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton and Sandro Tonali.

As per the report, United could even look to sign two new midfielders if Manuel Ugarte also leaves the club in the summer.

Man United midfield needs a rebuild

The Premier League giants have made it their priority to make new additions to the midfield.

It has been a position of concern for the Red Devils for a long time. While Casemiro has been crucial, his age and declining form was a cause of concern for the club.

On the other hand, Kobbie Mainoo is still young and developing and he is far from a finished product.

As for Ugarte, his form has been up and down during his time in Manchester and the Premier League side could look to replace him.

Having invested heavily in attacking and defensive positions in recent windows, the attention will now firmly switch to the midfield.

Anderson, Wharton and Tonali have wealth of experience in the Premier League and they have all done well for their respective teams.

No wonder top Premier League clubs have been linked with a move for them and Man United are one of them.

Whoever they target, they are expected to face intense competition from their league rivals.

Along with appointing a new permanent manager, signing a new midfielder, or two, will be high on the priority list at Old Trafford.

Agents want Newcastle star to leave for Premier League rivals

The agent of Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali is keen for his client to seal a transfer to a Premier League club this summer.

The Italy international has been linked with Arsenal, Manchester United, and Manchester City in recent times after surprise talk of a possible exit from St James’ Park on Deadline Day in January.

A deal was never likely to materialise for Tonali at that moment, but the story has set the tone for the summer transfer window, with the feeling seeming pretty clear that the player and his representatives are gearing up for a big move.

And despite some talk of Tonali himself being keen to return to Serie A, where there is reported to be some interest from Juventus, it seems he’s perhaps more likely to stay in the Premier League.

Sandro Tonali agent pushing for Premier League transfer

Tonali will likely be too expensive for any Italian club, both in terms of his transfer fee and wages, so staying in England seems the most likely thing for the 25-year-old.

The former AC Milan man would likely command a regular starting spot for United and City, and could perhaps be a useful option for Arsenal after the recent dip in form of Martin Zubimendi, and with the lack of a rotation option for Declan Rice in Mikel Arteta’s midfield.

Reports in Italy suggest that Tonali’s agent has recently been to watch Arsenal’s game against Brighton, and is doing his bit to stir up Premier League interest in his client.

Newcastle surely won’t be keen to sell Tonali, however, especially after the lengthy saga that eventually saw them lose Alexander Isak to Liverpool last summer.

It’s vital for this NUFC project to keep key players like Tonali around, and that could mean he’s going to prove too expensive even for the top Premier League clubs this summer.

Sandro Tonali makes up his mind after increasing interest from Man City and Man United

According to recent reports from talkSPORT, Manchester City and Manchester United are set to go head-to-head for the signature of Newcastle United’s midfield maestro, Sandro Tonali.

However, the 25-year-old Italian international reportedly has a different destination in mind, harboring a strong desire to return to his homeland and play in Serie A.

With Newcastle facing a turbulent summer rebuild following a bitterly disappointing domestic and European campaign, Tonali faces uncertain future at St. James’ Park with top Premier League clubs looking to make a move for him.

Man City and Man United to battle for Sandro Tonali

Both Manchester clubs are actively in the market for elite midfield reinforcements ahead of the 2026/27 season.

For Man United, the impending departure of veteran Casemiro and the ongoing search for a permanent manager have accelerated the need for a dynamic, deep-lying playmaker.

Tonali’s relentless work rate, exceptional passing range, and proven Premier League pedigree make him an ideal candidate to anchor their midfield rebuild alongside emerging academy talents.

On the other side of the city, Pep Guardiola’s Man City are looking to refresh their central options to maintain their dominance.

A fierce bidding war between the two Manchester heavyweights could provide Newcastle with a massive financial windfall, which they desperately need to balance their books and fund their own squad overhaul under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Despite the prestige and immense financial packages that either Manchester club could offer, Tonali’s heart appears firmly set on a return to Italy.

Having initially joined Newcastle from his boyhood club AC Milan for a reported €70 million in 2023, the midfielder has endured a rollercoaster spell on Tyneside.

While the Newcastle faithful impressively stood by him through his lengthy 10-month betting ban, recent reports suggest his representatives have been quietly exploring avenues to bring him back to Serie A since January.

The primary hurdle, however, is pure economics. Very few clubs in Italy, including giants like Juventus or a returning AC Milan, can afford Newcastle’s steep asking price to recoup their investment, nor can they easily match the lucrative wages Tonali currently earns in England.

This financial reality could ultimately force the Italian to compromise, making a domestic move to Manchester his most viable exit strategy from St James’ Park.
