Details about a massive WhatsApp-linked exploit Samsung patched in April 2025 have recently been revealed. Hackers used a simple WhatsApp trick to target many Samsung flagship phones, including the Galaxy S24, S23, and S24 series.

Researchers at Unit42 discovered a critical spyware called Landfall, which exploited a WhatsApp image exploit to spy on Samsung users. Notably, Galaxy smartphone users in the Middle East were only targeted for months.

WhatsApp is one of the most popular social apps worldwide. Almost every smartphone user has an account for engaging with contacts. However, the app may have allowed hackers to trigger a Samsung image exploit for spying.

Hackers used DNG image files to exploit the Samsung vulnerability. Once triggered successfully, the sent file can compromise the phone, a textbook “zero-click” attack. It becomes even more harmful due to its kind of application.

The victim receives an image in a DNG file without any link to click or app installation. However, this picture alone had the potential to allow hackers to access the phone and run their spy operation on innocent yet unaware users.

Affected devices:

  • Galaxy S23 Series
  • Galaxy S24 Series
  • Galaxy Z Fold4
  • Galaxy S22
  • Galaxy Z Flip4

Samsung WhatsApp DNG Exploit

Samsung has already patched this flaw in the April 2025 security patch. The affected devices were eligible for the security update in the month of release. You may have already installed the latest update on your Galaxy device.

However, if your Galaxy device has updates pending for months, you should act fast. Install the latest software update to improve the OS. Navigate to Settings > Software update > Download and install to check manually.
