Dooars Tourism Explodes with New Train Routes β Get Ready for the Ultimate Scenic Experience!

West Bengalβs Dooars region has always felt like a hidden treasure. Misty tea gardens, emerald forests, and wildlife-rich landscapes draw travellers seeking calm and adventure. Yet, not every tourism initiative succeeds on the first attempt. Now, Northeast Frontier Railway has taken a renewed step to strengthen tourism in the region by adding four new stops to its Alipurduar JunctionβNew Jalpaiguri tourist train. The move reflects a clear intent: make the scenic rail journey more accessible and revive visitor interest in one of eastern Indiaβs most picturesque destinations.
The tourist train was originally introduced in August 2021 to promote rail-based tourism in the Dooars. Operated by Northeast Frontier Railway, the service connects Alipurduar Junction with New Jalpaiguri, two key gateways for travellers heading into North Bengal. The concept was simple but powerful. Offer visitors a slow, scenic rail journey through forests, tea estates, and river crossings, while providing enhanced viewing experiences through specially designed Vistadome coaches.
However, despite its visual appeal and tourism potential, the train struggled with low passenger numbers. Occupancy levels fell, particularly in the premium Vistadome coaches. The railway even suspended operations for a short period in late 2025 due to weak demand. Earlier efforts, including the addition of Gulma as a halt, did not significantly improve the situation.
In response, Northeast Frontier Railway has now introduced four additional stops: Dalgaon, Binnaguri, Banarhat, and Nagrakata. These towns sit close to major tea gardens, forest belts, and wildlife zones in the Dooars. By expanding the number of halts from ten to fourteen, the railway aims to widen the catchment area and allow more local and domestic travellers to board the train.
From a tourism standpoint, this expansion could prove meaningful. Binnaguri and Banarhat serve as important access points for tea tourism and nature stays. Nagrakata lies close to forest corridors and river stretches popular among weekend travellers. Dalgaon connects smaller communities that often rely on road transport. Improved rail connectivity may encourage short leisure trips, eco-tourism circuits, and regional travel packages.
The train itself offers a distinct experience. It runs with six regular coaches and two Vistadome coaches. The Vistadome compartments feature wide glass windows and transparent roofing panels, allowing passengers to enjoy uninterrupted views of the passing landscape. As the train moves through dense greenery and open countryside, the journey becomes part of the destination.
Yet, tourism experts suggest that pricing and timing also influence demand. A standard seat costs significantly less than a Vistadome ticket. For many travellers, especially families and budget tourists, the higher fare may limit uptake. Additionally, the early morning departure from New Jalpaiguri does not always align with the arrival times of long-distance trains, which reduces convenience for inbound visitors.
Still, the railwayβs willingness to adapt signals commitment. Instead of withdrawing the service permanently, it has chosen to experiment with connectivity. That decision aligns with broader tourism goals promoted by the Ministry of Railways and regional tourism authorities, which encourage integrated transport to support destination growth.
The Dooars region already attracts wildlife enthusiasts visiting Jaldapara National Park and Buxa Tiger Reserve. Tea tourism, river rafting, and village homestays are steadily gaining attention. A reliable tourist train can complement these offerings by linking arrival hubs with interior destinations. It can also reduce road congestion and promote sustainable travel.
Rail-based tourism carries strong emotional value. Travellers often associate train journeys with nostalgia and discovery. When combined with scenic routes, the experience becomes immersive. If aligned correctly with tour packages, wildlife safaris, and hotel partnerships, the AlipurduarβNJP service could evolve into a signature North Bengal attraction.
The addition of new stops represents more than an operational tweak. It shows an understanding that tourism depends on accessibility. Every halt added creates an opportunity for local businesses, from homestays to transport operators. Even modest increases in footfall can support livelihoods in tea garden towns and forest-fringe communities.
As the train rolls once again through the Dooars with expanded connectivity, hope travels with it. Tourism growth rarely happens overnight. It requires patience, flexibility, and listening to market signals. Northeast Frontier Railway has chosen to respond rather than retreat. If the new halts succeed in drawing more travellers, the scenic train could finally find its rhythm.
For visitors seeking a slower, greener journey through North Bengal, the opportunity remains open. And for the Dooars, every arriving train brings the promise of renewed momentum, fresh stories, and a stronger tourism future.
