Gaya Railway Station to Suspend Platforms for Six Weeks, Causing Major Train Disruptions: New Update

In a significant update for rail passengers, Gaya Railway Station will suspend operations on platforms 2 and 3 for six weeks, beginning February 5. This suspension, caused by essential renovation work, will lead to widespread train disruptions, including cancellations, diversions, and short-terminations. The station is undergoing major infrastructure upgrades, including track maintenance, an improved signalling system, and the installation of air concourse garters and girders. These improvements, part of a nearly Rs 300 crore project, aim to bring Gaya station up to international safety and passenger service standards. While the work is necessary for long-term benefits, passengers will face significant travel challenges, with services not resuming fully until March 21.
From February 5, Gaya railway station will temporarily close platforms 2 and 3 for six weeks, leading to widespread disruptions in train services. This move, authorised by East Central Railway (ECR), is part of an extensive upgrade project designed to modernise the station’s infrastructure. The shutdown will impact multiple trains originating from or passing through Gaya, with numerous services being cancelled, rerouted, or short-terminated.
The closure of these platforms is necessary to carry out critical works, including track maintenance, installation of a new signalling system, and the construction of an air concourse garter and girder. These upgrades are part of a Rs 300 crore development project aimed at enhancing the safety and passenger amenities of Gaya station, bringing it up to international standards.
Platform Shutdown and Its Impact
The suspension of operations on platforms 2 and 3 will last until March 21, with services resuming only after the completion of the scheduled works. Although the mega block was initially planned to start on January 27, the timeline was revised, and the closure will now take effect from February 5. The shutdown will have the most significant effect on the Patna-Gaya route, where many passenger trains will either terminate early, be diverted to different routes, or face cancellations.
Affected Train Services
The Patna-Gaya route will experience the most disruptions, with eight passenger trains being short-terminated at Chakand station, located about 8 km north of Gaya. As a result, the Patna-Gaya passenger service will be suspended entirely until March 21.
Several other key services will now terminate at Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction (DDU) instead of Gaya. The Anand Vihar-Gaya and Lucknow-Gaya Ekatmata trains, among others, will no longer reach Gaya station, causing inconvenience for passengers. Additionally, the Kamakhya Express will terminate at Manpur station, which lies to the east of the river Falgu.
In addition to these changes, some trains will be diverted via alternative routes. The Bhabhua-Patna Express, Budh Purnima Express, Ganga-Damodar Express, and Patna-Hatia Express will take different paths. For instance, the Bhabhua-Patna Express will be rerouted via Sasaram-Ara, while the Ganga-Damodar Express will run via Islampur and the Hatia-Patna Express will take the Bakhtiarpur route.
Reduced Train Capacity
In response to the disruptions, certain trains will continue to run but with reduced capacity. For example, the Patna-Ranchi Jan Shatabdi Express will operate with fewer rakes, dropping from 22 to 18. Similarly, the Singrauli-Patna Express will operate with 18 rakes, reduced from the usual 20.
While passengers understand the importance of the development work at Gaya station, concerns have been raised regarding the impact on convenience. The termination of services at Chakand and Manpur stations, both within 10 km of Gaya, is seen as a manageable solution. However, the decision to reroute trains to Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction, located over 200 km away, has raised serious concerns, as it will lead to significant inconvenience for travellers, especially those who rely on these trains for shorter trips.
Gaya Railway Station will suspend operations on platforms 2 and 3 for six weeks starting February 5 to carry out essential upgrades, causing major disruptions to train services, including cancellations, diversions, and short-terminations. The work is part of a Rs 300 crore project to modernise the station, with full services resuming by March 21.
As the shutdown period progresses, passengers are advised to stay updated on the latest train schedules and reroutes to avoid unnecessary disruption. ECR officials are working diligently to ensure that the construction and renovation work proceeds as planned, and that services are fully restored after the shutdown ends on March 21. The long-term goal of these improvements is to enhance the passenger experience and safety at Gaya railway station, transforming it into a state-of-the-art transportation hub.
Despite the temporary inconvenience, the completion of these crucial upgrades will bring long-term benefits to passengers, with better facilities and improved infrastructure that will make Gaya station a modern travel hub for the region.
