The New York Yankees are hunting for more pitchers as they make their second half playoff push and it appears the San Diego Padres‘ Mason Miller is at the top of the list.

As reported by The New York Post’s Jon Heyman, the Yankees’ two primary targets entering the trade deadline on Aug. 3 are Padres closer Mason Miller and Minnesota Twins catcher Ryan Jeffers.

Miller just completed his second All-Star Game appearance, his second in the past three seasons. The 27-year-old has emerged as one of the game’s top closers, becoming notable for pitching an immaculate inning in a late season game in 2025 and breaking a franchise record for most consecutive scoreless innings (33 2/3 innings) earlier this season.

Miller leads the National League in a number of categories, including saves (25), games finished (34) and win probability added (3.2).

While addressing those trade rumors on a potential deal to the Yankees, Miller took it as a compliment. He did however say that he’s not a big city guy.

“It’s a compliment,” Miller told reporters of the Yankees’ potential interest. “They’re a very good team, and they’re interested in good players. It’s a big city,” Miller said. “I can’t say I’m a big city guy.”

Mason Miller No Stranger to Trade Deadline Deals

Miller is obviously no stranger to deadline deals with the Oakland Athletics previously dealing the veteran pitcher to the Padres at last season’s trade deadline. The Padres are obviously an annual contender that is expected to compete for playoffs berths every season. They’re currently 3.5 games back of the Miami Marlins for the final wild card spot in the National League and a lot will hinge on whether or not they gain ground over the next couple of weeks.

The 27-year-old pitcher’s stat line is astonishing and it’s no surprise that the Yankees would covet him as they make their own push for the playoffs. Miller’s stat line is as follows: 25 saves and a 0.91 ERA with 72 strikeouts in just 39.2 innings pitched.

The Yankees currently lead the AL Wild Card race, but they trail just three games back of the Tampa Bay Rays for the lead in the AL East.

While speaking to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, Miller detailed what it’ll take for the Padres to make a second half push.

“It’s competitive; it’s all about getting hot at the right time,” Miller said. “I think you’ll see a lot of teams probably adding and going for it, because anything can happen any given year. You’ve just got to get in.”

Padres’ Performance Will Likely Dictate Mason Miller’s Future

Feinsand went into detail about how the Padres’ play will likely dictate whether or not Miller remains in a San Diego uniform to end the season.

“Mason Miller knows all about the potential for distraction in the weeks leading up to the Deadline, having been traded from the Athletics to the Padres last July 31. San Diego, which hit the break at 48-48 to pull within 3 1/2 games of the final NL Wild Card spot, is one of those teams that could go either way between now and Aug. 3, creating a sense of urgency within the clubhouse.”

We’ll see where Miller ultimately ends up, but it’s clear he’s at the top of the list on the Yankees’ radar.

The Yankees sit at 53-42, chasing the Tampa Bay Rays atop the American League East while holding onto a wild card spot, according to Pinstripes Nation‘s Esteban Quiñones. Jazz Chisholm Jr. is playing out his final guaranteed year at second base, and Anthony Volpe and Jose Caballero have been trading turns at shortstop depending on health and matchups.

Corey Seager’s Trade Value Amid a Rough Season

Volpe is hitting .242 with one home run in 42 games, a thin return for a former Gold Glove winner, and neither he nor Caballero has forced a permanent decision at short. Chisholm, meanwhile, is not shy about his price for a new deal.

“I’m 28. I want 8-to-10 years,” Chisholm said, as quoted by Quiñones. “I know I can get $35 million somewhere else.”

The instability created by the Volpe and Chisholm combination may be pushing New York toward Seager, and his below-the-surface numbers explain why. On one hand, he’s hitting .182 with 10 home runs, 25 RBI and a .667 OPS this season. On the other, his .336 expected weighted on-base average, 91.1 mph average exit velocity, 44.6 percent hard-hit rate and 15.4 percent barrel rate tell a different and more promising story, according to ClutchPoints‘ Josh Davis.

Seager, a Charlotte, North Carolina, native, was drafted 18th overall by the Dodgers in 2012, and has since made five All-Star teams and won two World Series MVP awards, one with Los Angeles in 2017 and one with Texas in 2023. That makes him one of only two non-pitchers ever to win multiple World Series MVPs. The other is Reggie Jackson.

He’s a career .284 hitter with 231 home runs across parts of 12 seasons, and he’s signed through 2031 on a 10-year, $325 million deal that makes any trade a franchise-level commitment rather than a two-month rental.

What a New York Yankees Package for Corey Seager Could Look Like

One possible framework sees Volpe going to Texas as the piece that makes the trade work, since top Rangers prospect Sebastian Walcott isn’t ready to take over shortstop yet. Volpe would give Texas a controllable bridge at the position rather than block its long-term future there.

Beyond Volpe, a near-ready power-hitting outfielder and a hard-throwing upper-level pitching prospect could round out the package, according to Pinstripes Nation, with roughly $7 million to $12 million coming back from Texas to offset some of Seager’s remaining money. Keeping George Lombard Jr., Dax Kilby and Carlos Lagrange out of any offer remains a realistic option precisely because New York would already be absorbing so much in dollars and luxury-tax exposure.

The Rangers remain in the thick of the AL West race, which makes moving a two-time champion a harder call internally than a typical deadline dump, and reports indicate the club has largely rebuffed inquiries so far. Boston, Atlanta and Seattle have also surfaced as suitors.

Seager’s limited no-trade protections, his back issues and his standing in that Texas clubhouse all complicate the path further, and neither side has said anything about trade talks. But with two infield spots still unsettled in the Bronx, the Yankees have both the motivation and a plausible framework to make the call.

Ben Rice’s first Home Run Derby ended after one round, but the Yankees slugger shared one of the night’s most memorable moments with the person throwing him every pitch — his father, Dan Rice.

While Rice’s Derby run ended sooner than he hoped, the father-son story behind every swing became one of the evening’s most compelling moments. Who is Dan Rice, and why was he the perfect choice to pitch on baseball’s biggest power stage?

Rice hit seven home runs across 20 swings Monday night at Citizens Bank Park, eliminated before the semifinals of the 2026 T-Mobile Home Run Derby. He entered the night a longshot, sitting at roughly +2000 to win the field according to oddsmakers at Covers, and his round-one total left him on the outside looking in.

His best blast of the night traveled 443 feet at 109 mph off the bat, according to reporters tracking exit velocity readings courtside. By the tail end of his swings, Rice visibly slowed, with observers on hand noting a dip in bat speed over his final cuts.

Ben Rice’s Father Served as His Pitcher

Dan Rice, a former Brown University pitcher from the 1980s, threw every pitch of his son’s Derby round, a job he’s held since Ben was old enough to hold a bat. a routine that stretched across chain-link fields in Massachusetts long before either man imagined a big-league stage.

“My dad has always been there for me,” Rice said, as quoted by MLB.com‘s Bryan Hoch. “Every offseason, I’m going back and making sure I get my BP in with my dad. He always went the extra mile. He’d drive an hour-plus or two hours from Cohasset, and we’d go hit at a local field to get our swings in for the day.”

Father-son duos have a strong track record in the Derby. Cal Raleigh won it with his father pitching last year, and Bryce Harper and Robinson Canó both took home the trophy with dad on the mound, according to a Sporting News report. Dan Rice knows his son’s timing after decades of throwing to him, and the sessions were never about mechanics.

“Our BP was never about nitpicking my swing or a lot of instruction, to be honest,” Rice said, per MLB.com. “He would try to throw me off-balance with different pitches and have me work through situations. He wanted me to become a good hitter, not necessarily to have a great swing. That was huge in my development.”

Ben Rice’s Path From Dartmouth to the Derby Stage

Rice’s road to Philadelphia ran through Hanover, New Hampshire, where he played at Ivy League Dartmouth before the Yankees selected him in the 2021 draft. His college numbers were modest — a .242 average across the pandemic-shortened 2019 and 2020 seasons.

He debuted with the Yankees on June 18, 2024, and became the club’s home run leader within two years, entering Derby week with 25 homers. Rice earned his first All-Star nod this month, batting .267 with 27 home runs, 56 RBI and a .921 OPS through the bulk of the 2026 season.

“I just want to enjoy it, having fun taking BP with my dad at a big league field in front of a bunch of people,” Rice said, as quoted by Hoch. The early exit didn’t erase that.

One of the most popular, fun, and entertaining events on Major League Baseball’s calendar each season is the T-Mobile Home Run Derby, which is a fan-favorite All-Star break festivity that features eight of MLB’s top sluggers duking it out for a prize of $1 million. The All-Star game (and Home Run Derby) is being held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in the Phillies’ home ballpark, Citizens Bank Park.

MLB.com’s Thomas Harrington provided some insight on the new Home Run Derby format, which is powered by T-Mobile:

“Eight players will still make up the field, same as in years past. But instead of trying to hit as many homers as they can during timed rounds, participants will start each round with a finite number of swings: 20 in Round 1, 15 in Round 2 and 15 again in the final round.”

“All swings will count against a player’s swing allotment, whether it results in a homer or not. However, a player who homers on his final swing of a round can keep swinging until he doesn’t hit one out.”

The eight sluggers participating in the 2026 Home Run Derby include: Kyle Schwarber (Philadelphia Phillies), Bryce Harper (Phillies), Munetaka Murakami (Chicago White Sox), Junior Caminero (Tampa Bay Rays, 2025 runner-up), Jac Caglianone (Kansas City Royals), Willson Contreras (Boston Red Sox), Jordan Walker (St. Louis Cardinals), and Ben Rice (New York Yankees).

It’s a pretty stacked field, and honestly, one of the more anticipated Home Run Derbies in recent memory, it feels like. Two participants from the host city (Schwarber, Harper), last year’s runner-up in Caminero, and a guaranteed new winner. Add in the likes of rookie slugger Munetaka Murakami, and rising stars in Ben Rice, Jordan Walker, and Jac Caglianone. Sign me up.

However, for my prediction, I’m going to hand out two potential winners that I like to win the whole thing.

The biggest factor I take into account when trying to bet this event is which players need the $1 million the most (right now). Of course, every player in this event is going to get paid in due time, but the players whose salaries are less than $1 million on this list are Ben Rice, Junior Caminero, Jordan Walker, and Jac Caglianone.

Murakami, Kyle Schwarber, Bryce Harper, and Willson Contreras are all signed MLB players.

Yankees Manager Aaron Boone had plenty to say when it came to the Yankees drafting Andy Pettitte’s son Luke in the 8th round of the MLB Draft earlier today. The Yankees were coming off a series sweep against the Nationals, and Boone wasn’t aware the Yankees made the pick until during the postgame interaction with members of the Yankees media staff/personnel.

When notified of the selection, Boone responded, “We did? Oh yeah! Heck yeah! I’m fired up”, via Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News Sports. Boone further added that when it was mentioned if he could provide a “scouting report”, he stated, “big power, the TJS, and pretty good genes”, summarized Boone (via Gary Phillips). It’s no secret that there was lots to mention with the Yankees not only sweeping the Nationals ahead of this upcoming All-Star Break, but the fact that the Yankees selected the son of a former Yankee great who’s won multiple championships.

Andy Pettitte Serves Key Role With Current Yankees Team

Boone added that his relationship with Andy, who currently serves as a special advisor for the Yankees and has worked closely with the Yankees’ pitchers throughout the season over the last several years, has grown stronger. Boone stated that Andy’s become a real good friend now, and obviously he’s not here right now, but they know he’s around a lot and a big part of our staff and our culture”, said the Yankees manager.

Boone further mentioned getting to know Luke over the years in Pettitte’s role with the Yankees, even bringing up his Tommy John Surgery from the past year, which led him to become a full-time DH at Dallas Baptist University in 2026. Still, Boone was eager to mention how he’s “been getting to know Luke and his story”, as well as the impressiveness he was left with “raking in college this year despite the Tommy John Surgery”, stated Boone. 

Boone then concluded the conversation by stating, “Looking forward to seeing his journey unfold. He’s a great kid. That’s great news”, stated Boone. The MLB Draft concluded today, with rounds 5-20 held. The Yankees made numerous selections after Pettitte in the 8th round, in which some of the more notable selections include outfielder Lee Garris from Maury High School in Virginia, shortstop William Cutshnall of Seneca High School in South Carolina, and Diego Castellanos from St Mary’s High School in California, to name a few.

Yankees Draft Has Been Mix Of Collegiate And Prep Players

The Yankees in total drafted eight pitchers and 12 hitters, with Pettitte being the lone two-way position player in this draft. They also drafted two catchers: Brendan Brock from the University of Oklahoma and Bear Harrison from Texas Tech. The Yankees will now navigate signing as many of their 20 selections as possible within the coming days and weeks ahead before the draft signing deadline, which is on Monday, July 27th at 5;00 PM ET. 

One thing seems certain, though: the Yankees won’t have too much difficulty signing the younger Pettitte, as he looks to carry on the success and tradition of his father’s historic career in pinstripes, which brought him five World Series Championships with the team.

The Major League Baseball trade deadline is just over three weeks away, and with some minor trades transpiring across the league already, there’s surely a lot more to come in the following weeks. MLB trade rumors are swirling everywhere, and on Sunday, July 12, a new report emerged from USA Today’s Bob Nightenagle that suggests Tarik Skubal may want to stay in Detroit for the rest of the season. Of course, it’s partially just speculation, because what Skubal wants may be different than what the Detroit Tigers want, but that’s a huge development in recent trade rumors.

Another massive development over the past week or so has been the Boston Red Sox recent surge back into AL playoff contention. The American League isn’t putting on the best show this season, as the Red Sox (who are under .500), are just a game out of a playoff spot on the last day before the MLB All-Star break. So, after it looked like they would likely be sellers at this deadline, Boston’s trade deadline plans may be shifting by the day, and there’s almost certainly going to hold onto their key players until the very last day before a decision is made. Remember, the Red Sox also have some of the more coveted players thought to be on the market.

Are the Red Sox Trade Deadline Plans Shifting?

It appears so. The Boston Red Sox are 45-48 after going 8-2 in their last 10 games. They’ve won eight straight games and will go for the sweep of the Mets on Sunday afternoon. Boston has a wealth of ‘tradeable assets’, which include names like Sonny Gray, Willson Contreras, Aroldis Chapman, and Jarred Duran. All names that have steadily been linked in trade rumors, but Craig Breslow and the rest of the Red Sox front office may have a completely different trade deadline plan now, after the recent winning surge.

The Red Sox could very well go from sellers to strong buyers in the market. Perhaps their biggest need is another front-line starter with Garrett Crochet still sidelined, and a right-handed hitting infield bat.

So, the Red Sox now carry heavy speculation ahead of Aug. 3, and it will be very interesting to see the moves they make as well as the names they get connected to.
