Milwaukee shouldn’t trade Giannis Antetokounmpo for one major reason

With constant trade talks swirling around superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo, this could be the summer a blockbuster deal finally happens. The Bucks’ owner has made comments about wanting to make a move before the NBA Draft to acquire assets, and looking at Milwaukee’s roster and cap situation, the franchise doesn’t seem to have any direction. On paper, this feels like the perfect time to move the Greek Freak – or is it?

Generational Talents Shouldn’t Be Traded

It’s no secret Giannis is in control of his own future. He made sure a no-trade clause was included in his three-year, $186 million contract, meaning he would have to approve any deal involving him. While trading Giannis would bring a massive return, it could do more harm than good. How can Milwaukee realistically expect to replace a player with his level of impact?

Giannis is a generational talent, the type of player every franchise hopes falls into its lap. He was selected 15th overall, and getting that kind of value at that spot is almost unheard of. Truthfully, getting that value with the No. 1 pick is rare. Players like Giannis don’t come around often.

Why Rebuild?

With the current NBA Draft lottery system, even the league’s worst teams aren’t guaranteed top picks. If the Bucks trade Giannis for draft capital, there’s little doubt they would become one of the NBA’s bottom teams. That doesn’t automatically mean they’ll land another superstar. Instead, they could find themselves stuck in years of losing basketball while searching for a player they already had.

Milwaukee also doesn’t have the draft assets necessary to fully embrace a rebuild. Rather than tearing everything down, the front office should focus on improving the roster around Giannis. The Bucks have limited cap flexibility, but contracts such as Kyle Kuzma’s or Bobby Portis’ could be moved. If they can upgrade at guard and build around Giannis, Myles Turner, and younger players like Kevin Porter Jr. and Ousmane Dieng, this team could still be competitive.

His Impact

Giannis appeared in 36 games this season, yet the Bucks still won 32 games. It was their worst season in a decade, but it also showed how valuable he is. There are only a handful of players in the NBA who can completely change a franchise when healthy, and Giannis is one of them. With all the trade speculation, it makes me wonder, have the Bucks forgotten how much impact Giannis has on a team?

Giannis Antetokounmpo trade rumors take unexpected turn with Myles Turner twist

Speculation surrounding Giannis Antetokounmpo’s future has reached the point where many around the league expect a trade to happen eventually, yet plenty of uncertainty remains regarding both his next move and the long term outlook of the Milwaukee Bucks.

When the Bucks eventually explore a Giannis Antetokounmpo deal, there is also no certainty the framework would involve him alone. According to NBA insider Gery Woefel, discussions have even touched on the idea of packaging Antetokounmpo with big man Myles Turner in a potential trade scenario, adding another layer of complexity to any possible blockbuster move.

This is hilarious.

“I was told the Bucks have explored the possibility of a trade package that would include Giannis Antetokounmpo and Myles Turner, who recently threw Antetokounmpo under the bus for basically being able to do whatever his heart desired last season and not facing any repercussions — like being hours late for a team flight,” Woelfel wrote in his post on X (formerly Twitter).

Giannis and Turner have shared just one season together, and it did not come close to meeting expectations for Milwaukee. The Bucks struggled through a difficult year, missing the Playoffs and finishing 11th in the Eastern Conference at 32-50, which only fueled constant trade speculation and created a persistent distraction around the franchise.

“While Turner and Antetokounmpo spending another season together would be crazy, a more likely scenario would have them ending up with different teams in a multi-team deal,” the insider continued.

Turner posted 11.9 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 0.7 steals, and 1.6 blocks per game while shooting 44.0 percent from the field and 38.3 percent from three during the 2025 to 26 season, marking a noticeable drop compared to his earlier run in Indiana. Over 10 seasons with the Pacers, he averaged 14.1 points, 6.8 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 0.7 steals, and 2.2 blocks per game while shooting 49.9 percent overall and 36.2 percent from beyond the arc.

Beyond the on court struggles, concerns about accountability and professionalism reportedly contributed to Milwaukee’s disappointing season, and the situation appears to have tested Antetokounmpo’s patience.

While he may have once envisioned spending his entire career with the Bucks, the team’s internal issues have only intensified questions about the franchise’s future, particularly after Turner publicly criticized aspects of Antetokounmpo’s leadership.

NBA Insider Reveals ‘Strong’ Connection Between Knicks and Giannis Antetokounmpo And How It Will Play Out Come Next Season

The New York Knicks were among the most heavily-linked to Giannis Antetokounmpo throughout the season. Neither the Greek Freak nor his current team the Milwaukee Bucks confirmed it but rumors lived on.

Shams Charania is among the reporters relentless in reporting about Antetokounmpo’s move away from Wisconsin and in his latest scoop, he revealed that the Knicks’ Giannis trade interests were strong.

“They did make offers, but they felt the Bucks didn’t really want to move Giannis. The Bucks, meanwhile, felt the Knicks weren’t making strong enough offers to entertain trading Giannis,” Charania said during an appearance in Tracy McGrady and Vince Carter’s podcast.

There was strong interest from the Knicks. Will they push through with it? Charania said they will set it aside now.

“At the end of the day, they washed their hands of that situation. Now, they’re in the NBA Finals, and I think we can all safely say the Knicks are not going to be one of the teams Giannis will be on next season. There are going to be other destinations for that.”

The Knicks were able to build a team around Jalen Brunson and they are now in the 2026 NBA Finals to face the San Antonio Spurs. Brunson sacrificed around $110 million during his contract extension signing the Knicks brought in players that complement his skills.

The Knicks’ interest is dead for now but it will probably be only get killed ultimately if they win the NBA title.

2 teams chasing Giannis Antetokounmpo

Antetokounmpo did not play much in this ongoing season. His team failed to make the playoffs. He also had some issues with his team late in the regular season after being barred from returning to play. It looks like the road is ready for him to walk away from the Bucks.

There are two teams reportedly still in the play for the two-time MVP’s services.

“More and more, with sources saying Miami [Heat] and Portland [Trail Blazers] are already in pursuit, Antetokounmpo’s future is increasingly expected to be resolved over the next few weeks in conjunction with NBA Draft proceedings,” insider Marc Stein wrote his own site Stein Line.

The Greek Freak has connection with the Blazers as waiting there are his former teammates Damian Lillard and Jrue Holiday.

As for the Heat, their biggest asset is the fact that they are in the Eastern Conference. Reports said Giannis will choose to stay in that conference rather than the West where competition is tighter.
