P Kynzee Anderson, Shreveport (LA) Calvary Baptist Academy

The Georgia Bulldogs’ commitment is fresh off of leading Calvary Baptist Academy to the LHSAA’s Division III Select championship after defeating Parkview Baptist, 5-3. With the way Anderson played throughout the course of the season, it’s difficult to not have her among one of the nation’s candidates for Player of the Year. Anderson owned the circle and finished the 2026 season with a 30-1 mark with a 0.61 ERA and 318 strikeouts. At the plate, Anderson batted .290 with three home runs and 25 runs batted in.

P Eloisa Maes, Melissa (TX)

Considered one of the more highly rated pitchers in the country, according to Softball America’s player rankings, Maes has shown throughout the spring why she’s one of the nation’s best. The Arizona commitment last season winning 31 games, fanning 238 batters in nearly 146 innings. This current 2025 season for the Cardinals, Maes has displayed her dominance in the circle on a weekly basis, winning 27 games and striking out 181 batters in 134 innings of work. With the UIL playoffs still ongoing , Maes has a chance to continue to add on top of her current stats.

P MK McMullan, Orange Beach (AL)

This list isn’t just subjective to only seniors as McMullan becomes the first Class of 2028 prospect on the list. With the way the sophomore pitcher has been playing in the circle and at the plate, there’s no debate that McMullan should be considered as one of the nation’s top players. Playing within a highly competitive Alabama high school softball space, McMullan is currently 25-1 with a staggering 0.49 earned run average and 177 strikeouts. With her bat, McMullan has belted 12 homes runs, driven in 43 runs and owns a .443 average at the plate.

IF McLaine Hudson, Bowling Green (KY) South Warren

Hudson becomes the first on this list that is not a pitcher and when you dig deeper into what the Florida State commitment’s statistics for the season, you begin to realize what kind of spring the senior has put together. Playing primarily at shortstop for the Spartans, Hudson is batting a ridiculous .750 at the plate with 20 home runs, 20 doubles, three triples, 60 runs batted in and 35 stolen bases. Along with playing for one of the country’s top high school softball teams in South Warren, Hudson deservingly belongs in the conversation for Player of the Year.

P Annie Eliason, Florence (SC) West Florence

If the opposition can’t score off of your pitcher, the likelihood of winning obviously goes up immensely and that’s been the case for West Florence High School all season long behind the USC Upstate commitment. Through 104.2 innings worked this season, Eliason hasn’t yielded a single earned run as her earned run average sits at 0.00. Eliason owns a 17-0 record, has struck out 269 batters and only walked 11 this season. The senior hasn’t been too shabby at the plate either, batting .424 with four home runs and 23 runs batted in.

Florida's top high school lacrosse teams have gathered in Naples this week with trophies on the line. 

The boys' and girls' state semifinals and finals will take place Thursday through Saturday across two classifications, with some of the best teams and players in the country in action. 

On the boys' side, the top four teams in the MaxPreps national rankings will be in action, two each in Class 1A and 2A. Saint Andrew's enters the weekend ranked No. 1 in the nation and is trying to return to the 1A final and a potential matchup with two-time defending champion Benjamin. In 2A, national No. 3 St. Thomas Aquinas goes for the repeat with last year's finalist, No. 2 Ponte Vedra, hoping for revenge on the other side of the bracket. 

The same holds true on the girls' side, as national No. 1 American Heritage and No. 2 Lake Highland Prep look for a sixth consecutive 1A state championship game showdown. In the 2A bracket, national No. 3 Ponte Vedra is shooting for its first state title but must survive a tough semifinal against seven-time champ Vero Beach, while Plant's hopes for a repeat are still alive in the other semi.

The FHSAA lacrosse semis and finals will not air on traditional television but fans can stream every game live on the NFHS Network.

The NFHS Network offers two basic plans: an Annual Pass ($6.67 per month) or a Monthly Pass ($13.99 per month). These plans give subscribers the ability to watch live sporting events and create clips of their favorite moments from games.

May 6—ROCHESTER — The Mayo baseball team will host its third annual Strike Out Cancer game, honoring late coach Charlie Lonergan, when the Spartans play John Marshall in a crosstown rivalry game at 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 7, at Mayo Field in Rochester.

Lonergan, a 2001 Mayo High School graduate and Kasson teacher, passed away from Glioblastoma, a rare form of brain cancer, in January 2024.

"It makes for a good night raising money for the Charlie Lonergan Foundation and bringing people together through baseball," Mayo head coach Tom Senne said.

Senne said roughly $3,500 was raised at last year's event and additional donations came in throughout the summer.

Players from both teams will wear colorful wrist tape and bracelets during the game to recognize those fighting different types of cancer, such as pink for breast cancer, teal for ovarian cancer and gray for brain cancer.

When the PA announcer calls up each batter, they will say who each player chose to honor or "play for" during the game — someone close to them who is/was affected by cancer.

Before the game, the "Team Charlie" Foundation will once again present the Charlie Lonergan Scholarship to a Mayo baseball player "who exemplifies Charlie's commitment to selflessness, leadership and impact."

Senne said a family in the community that is dealing with cancer will be recognized before the game as well and their kid will throw out the first pitch.

There will also be raffle baskets donated by Mayo baseball families and shirts and hats for sale with proceeds benefiting the foundation.

Last year, Mayo baseball dedicated the clubhouse at Massey Field next to Mayo High School to Lonergan with a plaque presented during the 2025 event, a doubleheader against Century. Mayo won both games, the first by a score of 5-3 and the second 14-4.

Joplin High School's baseball team fell 11-1 to the top-ranked Class 5 Willard High School Tigers on a blustery Tuesday at JHS, but the Eagles had plenty to celebrate after being named the 2026 Academic Team in Class 6 by the Missouri Baseball Coaches Association.

As a team, the Eagles hit a 3.8 grade point average, besting Kansas City Liberty High School (3.75) and Nixa High School (3.74).

Nine Joplin players were also recognized as 2026 All-State Academic Individual Award recipients for achievements in the classroom. They are David Bhend, John Jasper, Layne Royle, Brecken Green, Junior Lowery, Lake Ward, Hayden Wolf, Jensen Stout and Isaac Yust.

The Eagles were not as fortunate on the field Tuesday. Willard jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Ricky Riggs scored when Gavin Leek was hit by a pitch with bases loaded, and Matthew Burns came home on a Tyler Davis sacrifice fly to left field.

The Tigers made it a 5-0 game with three more runs in the top of the fourth frame. Davis and Easton Redd both scored on an error, and Kyler Adams came home on a sacrifice grounder.

Joplin’s lone run of the game came in the bottom of the fourth when Jacob Porter scored on a fielder’s choice after a Stout groundball.

After a scoreless fifth inning for both squads, Willard exploded for six runs in the top of the sixth inning.

Burns plated Kellen Merryman with a line drive to right field and Levi Hilton made it 7-1 when he scored on a bases-loaded walk. The lead grew to 8-1 on another bases-loaded walk and expanded to 9-1 when Evan Arnold scooted home on a passed ball. The Tigers final two runs came courtesy of a Jackson Redd single to right field that plated Kade Taylor and Davis.

Jasper finished 2 for 2 for the Eagles and Porter was 1 for 3 with a run.

Starter Brecken Green was tagged for the loss after giving up four runs (three earned) on three hits. He struck out three and walked four in three innings of work.

Jackson Redd drove in four runs for Willard after going 1 for 4. Burns was 2 for 2 with two runs and an RBI.

Tigers starter Hilton garnered the win after giving up one run on five hits. He struck out four and walked one in five innings of work.

Joplin (13-12) will look to get back in the win column when they travel to Parkview High School (1-13) for a 4:30 p.m. Thursday game.

The growth of girls flag football under the NFL initiative, has seen now up to 21 states officially sanctioning the sport as a state championship one. Now another state might be seeing themselves with girls flag football as an official sport in the near future as they begin making strong moves.

The Green Bay Packers announced that they are distributing $100,000 to 20 Wisconsin high schools to assist with installing girls flag football intramurals and club teams throughout the state.

“Seeing the growth of girls flag football in Wisconsin over the last several years has been so rewarding,” Green Bay Packers football outreach manager Ryan Fencl said in a press release. “We’re proud to highlight girls flag as a sport in a variety of ways through our outreach efforts, creating opportunities for girls to explore their athletic abilities through flag football. We look forward to continuing to build momentum for girls flag in Wisconsin and contribute to the ultimate goal of establishing girls flag as a sanctioned high school sport in our state.”

On Tuesday morning, Rockford (IL) Auburn High School announced who will be their new head football coach for the 2026 season.

Per the announcement via social media on X, formerly known as Twitter, the has tabbed Hosea Harris as the program’s next head coach. Harris has already served in many capacities at the school already like as the offensive coordinator, head baseball coach and as an assistant on the boys basketball team.

With over 25 years of experience in RPS205, Coach Harris brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership to our Football Program. He has served as Head Football Coach at both Middle and High school levels. Coach Harris has had a hand in growing many of Auburn’s athletic programs including previous roles as Varsity Baseball Head Coach and Varsity Football Offensive Coordinator at Auburn. He currently serves as a Student Mentor, Athletic Coordinator, and Varsity Boys Basketball Assistant Coach at Auburn.

The Knights have gone through eight straight seasons finishing at or below the .500 mark, with the last time the program had a winning record was 2017 when Auburn finished with a 8-2 mark. Now Harris will be tasked with aiming to lead the squad to a winning season this upcoming fall after only winning a game a year ago.

Auburn finished with a 1-8 record and as the No. 265 in the state, according to the final 2025 Illinois High School Football Massey Rankings.

Neimann Lawrence, Plantation (FL) American Heritage

The Skinny: The 2028 four-star phenom quarterback move to 2025 FHSAA Class 4A state champion American Heritage from Miami Northwestern really shook up South Florida and sets the Patriots up for a chance to three-peat as state champions this fall. Lawrence in his first couple of years has been as good as anyone in the Sunshine State and his transfer to American Heritage keeps them in contention for another state title this 2026 campaign. Lawrence last Florida high school football season completed 131 of 185 passes for 1,971 yards, 32 touchdowns and just one interception, making him easily one of the most efficient at the position from the Sunshine State.

Brady Quinn, Hollywood (FL) Chaminade-Madonna

The Skinny: Another 2028 signal caller that transferred schools this off-season was Quinn, who left Naples Lely for 9-time state champion Chaminade-Madonna Prep. Quinn was very effective playing out of Southwest Florida, but should see his statistics the next couple of years soar with the playmakers he’ll have around him with the Lions. This past 2025 campaign at Naples Lely, Quinn finished the Florida high school football season completing 198 of 328 passes for 2,960 yards and 37 touchdowns. There’s little doubt whatsoever that Quinn should be able to surpass those numbers as he will have receivers like 2027 four-star Ah’Mari Stevens and 2028 four-star Tromon Isaac to throw to, respectively.

The Venice Indians (29-1) took the region quarterfinal series against George Jenkins by scores of 7-0 and 8-3. The Indians have bounced back from their one-run loss to Orange Lutheran (Calif.) at the National High School Invitational and reeled off 10 straight wins. What has really separated Venice apart from everyone else in the country is the play of their pitching staff as they have only allowed 414 runs through 30 games and scoring 237. Up next is a region semifinal series against Winter Haven this week.

2. St. John Bosco Braves (CA) (22-5)

St. John Bosco (CA) won a best of three series against Orange Lutheran (CA), but then followed that up with a surprising three-game skid. The Braves (22-5) fell to Orange Lutheran, Norco and Huntington Beach during the losing streak, but have bounced back with a 11-game winning streak. Despite dropping the five games this season, the Braves are loaded with returning talent from the 30-4 team from last season, including on the pitcher’s mound. The bulk of the experience lies within the pitching staff as senior Gavin Cervantes, who went 8-0 with 44 strikeouts in 2025, leads the way. Another up and coming arm to watch for is sophomore Brayden Krakowski, who went 5-0 with 31 strikeouts last spring.

3. Orange Lutheran Lancers (CA) (21-5)

Orange Lutheran (21-5) moves up a couple spots despite after dropping a 1-0 decision to Servite recently. The Lancers went 23-7 last season, but with the talent the team possesses at the plate, it’s hard to not have this group in the conversation of the nation’s best. The player to watch for the Lancers on the mound is senior pitcher Gary Morse, who is already committed to the University of Tennessee. Morse leads the Orange Lutheran pitching staff this season with a 3-2 record, a 1.31 ERA and 81 strikeouts. The Lancers finish out the regular season with a series against Mater Dei.

4. Calallen Wildcats (TX) (30-2)

Jumping ahead of Grapevine from the Lone Star State as the top team hailing from Texas are the Calellen Wildcats as they’re currently on a 18-game winning streak and have shown no signs of slowing down. The Wildcats have been simply dominant throughout the season as they have out-scored the competition by a combined 355-37. Heading into the postseason, Calellen is the favorites to win the UIL’s Class 4A, Division I state championship as they take on Needville later this week in a playoff series.

5. Grapevine Mustangs (TX) (26-5)

The Grapevine Mustangs (26-5) has been barred from taking part in the UIL state playoffs due to use of an ineligible player, ending the team’s quest to repeat three-peat as state champs. Riding a current 17-game winning streak, it’s hard to ignore how good this Mustangs team is playing out of the Lone Star State. Of the 26 victories on the season, Grapevine has shut out opponents in 13 of the wins. The Mustangs’ 2026 season is officially over.
