Fincantieri Delivers Norwegian Luna to Norwegian Cruise Line, Marking a New Milestone for the Cruise Industry and its Impact on Global Tourism

Fincantieri, one of the world’s leading shipbuilding companies, has completed the delivery of Norwegian Luna to Norwegian Cruise Line at its Marghera shipyard in Venice, Italy. This is the second ship in the expanded Prima Plus Class series, which is being built for Norwegian Cruise Line. This is not the first time Fincantieri has delivered a ship to Norwegian Cruise Line, as it had previously completed the successful delivery of Norwegian Aqua in 2025.

The ceremony was attended by prominent personalities from Fincantieri and Norwegian Cruise Line. Biagio Mazzotta, Chairman of Fincantieri, and Luigi Matarazzo, General Manager of the Fincantieri Merchant Ships Division, attended the ceremony on behalf of Fincantieri. Marc Kazlauskas, NCL President, Patrik Dahlgren, NCLH EVP, Chief Vessel Operations and Newbuild Officer, and Daniel S. Farkas, EVP, and General Counsel, all from Norwegian Cruise Line and its parent company, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. (NCLH), attended the ceremony on their behalf.

Norwegian Luna: A New Milestone in Cruise Ship Innovation

Norwegian Luna, like her sister ship Norwegian Aqua, is a significant addition to the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet. With a size of 156,000 gross tons and a length of 321 meters, the ship offers more than 3,550 berths, making her 10% larger than the original Prima-class vessels, including Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva. The Prima Plus Class was designed to provide an enhanced cruising experience, combining luxurious accommodations with cutting-edge facilities for both leisure and business travelers.

This new delivery continues Norwegian Cruise Line’s strategy of expanding its fleet with state-of-the-art vessels. The Norwegian Luna features the most modern amenities, including expansive dining venues, entertainment options, and wellness facilities, making her a key player in luxury cruising.

Fincantieri’s Role in Crafting the Future of the Cruise Industry

The construction of Norwegian Luna was a complex, collaborative effort involving around 3,000 workers from Fincantieri and its partner companies. These workers completed the vessel’s construction over the past several months, with Fincantieri playing a central role in bringing the vision of Norwegian Cruise Line to life.

Fincantieri has long been a key player in the shipbuilding industry, known for delivering innovative and high-quality ships to the world’s leading cruise lines. The company’s dedication to excellence and attention to detail ensure that ships like Norwegian Luna offer both cutting-edge design and operational efficiency.

The Growing Prima Plus Class Fleet

The Prima Plus Class represents the future of Norwegian Cruise Line’s fleet, with ships designed to deliver an unmatched luxury cruising experience. The delivery of Norwegian Luna further strengthens the brand’s position in the competitive cruise market, as the ship’s design, size, and offerings appeal to a growing base of affluent travelers seeking unparalleled experiences at sea.

With Norwegian Aqua already delivered and Norwegian Luna now in service, Norwegian Cruise Line continues to expand its fleet, with future ships in the Prima Plus Class set to redefine what travelers expect from luxury cruise experiences.

Cruise Tourism’s Expanding Impact on Global Travel

The delivery of Norwegian Luna is more than just a milestone for Norwegian Cruise Line and Fincantieri—it’s a powerful testament to the growing importance of cruise tourism in global travel. The cruise industry, which has seen significant growth over the last few years, continues to provide a major economic boost to destinations worldwide. As more luxury vessels like Norwegian Luna hit the seas, they bring a wave of economic benefits, from increased tourism spending to job creation.

Cruise tourism has become one of the fastest-growing sectors in the global tourism industry. According to recent reports, the cruise sector generates billions in revenue annually, with cruise ships providing travelers with both luxury and value. Ships like Norwegian Luna, with their state-of-the-art amenities and expansive capacity, play a crucial role in this growth, helping attract a broader range of travelers, from seasoned cruisers to first-time luxury passengers.

The impact extends beyond the cruise lines themselves. Cruise tourism injects revenue into local economies, as thousands of passengers visit ports of call, boosting demand for local accommodations, restaurants, excursions, and retail. This ripple effect of spending is vital to supporting small businesses and enhancing the local tourism infrastructure of various destinations.

What’s Next for Fincantieri and Norwegian Cruise Line?

Following the successful delivery of Norwegian Luna, the relationship between Fincantieri and Norwegian Cruise Line continues to evolve. Both companies are committed to pushing the boundaries of ship design and maritime innovation, and their continued collaboration promises more groundbreaking vessels in the future.

As Fincantieri looks toward its next projects and Norwegian Cruise Line continues to expand its offerings, Norwegian Luna is a significant milestone in both companies’ shared history. With the delivery of Norwegian Luna, Norwegian Cruise Line now has a new, highly competitive vessel that will continue to draw guests from around the globe, while setting a new standard for luxury, innovation, and sustainability at sea.

Cruise Tourism’s Future Impact: Norwegian Luna and Beyond

The introduction of Norwegian Luna serves as an important milestone in the history of luxury cruise tourism, as travelers seek more immersive, luxurious, and sustainable cruise experiences. The future of cruise tourism is headed towards an increase in eco-friendly cruise tourism, innovative cruise ship designs, and luxury cruise tourism. Norwegian Luna embodies all the above trends.

As cruise tourism continues to grow, cruise ships like Norwegian Luna will not only boost the reputation of Norwegian Cruise Line but also establish the position of luxury cruise tourism as an integral part of the global tourism market. The introduction of more advanced cruise ships is paving the way for the future of cruise tourism, where cruise ships will function as cruise cities, offering everything that travelers need while on their way to exotic locations.
