1 in, 1 out: Arsenal ready to replace recent signing with versatile Premier League star

14 May 2026 at 18:08

Arsenal are reportedly showing an interest in the potential signing of West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes to replace Christian Norgaard.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta is a fan of Premier League-proven players and of those who are versatile enough to fill different roles, with Fernandes perfectly fitting the bill.

The talented young Portugal international has shone for West Ham this season, showing promise in a defensive midfield role or a more advanced role, and the Times now claim he’s on Arsenal’s radar.

With relegation to the Championship now looking increasingly likely for West Ham, ironically because of Fernandes’ glaring miss for the Hammers against Arsenal in their game last weekend, it could be that the 21-year-old is more likely to be available this summer.

Mateus Fernandes transfer being eyed by Arsenal

The report from the Times has also named Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain as potential suitors for Fernandes, but it’s easy to see him being a good fit for Arsenal.

The former Southampton man might also be keen to stay in England after adapting well to the style of football here, in what is generally regarded as the most competitive of the major five European leagues.

Arsenal also clearly have the need for a player of this profile as Arteta has shown that he very obviously doesn’t have much trust in Norgaard, who has barely played this season despite only joining from Brentford less than a year ago.

Fernandes could have a role in Arteta’s side straight away as AFC surely need more depth in that department, with Martin Zubimendi barely getting a rest this season, while there’s also no realistic substitute for Declan Rice.

As you can see from the table above, we used our Transfer Fit rating system to give the potential Fernandes to Arsenal transfer a 17/25.

Even if Fernandes is relatively inexperienced, he has shown he has quality to strengthen Arsenal’s depth in an important position, and he probably wouldn’t cost too much if West Ham are relegated.

‘Serious option’ – Chelsea step up efforts to beat Man United to potential £50m transfer

14 May 2026 at 17:07

Chelsea are reportedly stepping up their interest in the potential transfer of Bournemouth midfielder and Manchester United target Alex Scott.

The talented 22-year-old has impressed a great deal in the Premier League this season, and it’s not too surprising to now see some speculation over his future.

Chelsea are now described as stepping up their interest in Scott and viewing him as a ‘serious option’ in a report from TEAMtalk.

The report also mentions that Man Utd’s interim manager Michael Carrick is also a big admirer of Scott, with the Red Devils having monitored the England Under-21 international for some time now.

Alex Scott surely set for big transfer – will it be Chelsea or Manchester United?

Scott has been a key part of this impressive Bournemouth side that currently sit in 6th place in the Premier League table and who could even qualify for next season’s Champions League.

The Cherries won’t want to lose the presence of Scott in midfield, with the young Englishman doing a great job of protecting their defence and keeping things ticking on the ball, though it’s also fair to say that they’ve coped well with high-profile departures in recent times.

Dean Huijsen and Milos Kerkez both left Bournemouth last summer, while Antoine Semenyo was another major sale this January, and yet Andoni Iraola’s side have continued to go from strength to strength.

According to TEAMtalk, Scott is valued at around £50m, so it could be that Bournemouth will once again make a profit on a player and reinvest it wisely.

From there, it will be interesting to see if he ends up at United or Chelsea, who both have their positives and negatives.

Chelsea’s project is a little chaotic at the moment and they might not have European football next season, but Scott would probably get a decent amount of playing time as the Blues have put a lot of emphasis on recruiting and developing top young players.

United might be the better project right now, though, as they’ve made real progress since Carrick took over and are looking forward to being back in the Champions League next season.

How does Alex Scott compare with Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton?

Scott is one of a number of top young English midfielders coming through at the moment, so how does he compare to the likes of Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton, who will surely also be on the move this summer?

See below for a useful graphic which perhaps illustrates that Scott is a more defensive-minded player than the other two, who have a bit more to their game when it comes to going forward and playing box-to-box…

Alex Scott stats vs Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton

Scott looks like he’s a better ball carrier than the other two, but he would probably need to improve aspects of his passing game if he were to make the move to a club with title ambitions.

Which of these midfielders do you think is the best option on the market right now? Let us know in the comments!

Ben Jacobs confirms Pep Guardiola could leave and responds to leaked Man City farewell video

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola could reportedly step down as the club’s manager this summer, even though he has a year left on his contract.

That’s according to Ben Jacobs, who has posted an update about Guardiola’s situation in response to a leaked video showing what appears to be the filming of a farewell social media post for Bernardo Silva.

See below as Jacobs clears up the context behind the clip, whilst adding that even if this is not expected to be related to Guardiola, there is still a chance that he’s coming towards the end of his time at the Etihad Stadium…

Regarding Pep Guardiola. There remains a possibility he departs this summer even though Manchester City point to his contract expiring in summer 2027. However, the leaked video is Silva related.

City fans will surely be hoping there’s still a chance that Guardiola will stay, but it seems we’ll have to wait a little longer before an official confirmation.

A summer of goodbyes at Manchester City?

This could be an emotional summer for MCFC as club legends such as Bernardo Silva and John Stones will be leaving, and could perhaps be followed out by long-serving manager Guardiola.

The Spanish tactician, more than even some of the club’s all-time great players of recent times, looks like he’ll be close to impossible to replace.

Former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has been strongly linked with the City job by talkSPORT and others, so he looks like a candidate to watch after doing an impressive job at Stamford Bridge and having previously worked on Guardiola’s staff at City.

“Maybe…” – manager drops major selection hint that could decide Arsenal vs Man City title race

14 May 2026 at 16:06

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has strongly hinted at heavily rotating his side for the final Premier League game of the season against Arsenal.

It looks like the Eagles could play a decisive role in this season’s title race, as they lost to Manchester City last night to give Pep Guardiola’s side an important three points to keep their hopes alive.

However, Palace also host league leaders Arsenal on the final day at Selhurst Park, and it sounds like Glasner feels tempted to rest players for his team’s upcoming Europa Conference League final clash.

See below as the Palace boss gave this response to City themselves making a lot of changes to their line up last night to prepare for the FA Cup final they have coming up against Chelsea this weekend…

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner hints at rotation for Arsenal game:

"Manchester City have a huge final in three days, so maybe it is the legitimation to make a huge rotation against Arsenal [before the Conference League final]." pic.twitter.com/58aHq6sjpJ

“Manchester City have a huge final in three days, so maybe it is the legitimation to make a huge rotation against Arsenal [before the Conference League final],” Glasner said, as quoted by journalist Chris Wheatley.

It might be reading too much into it, but this certainly sounds quite clearly like the Austrian tactician now feels validated in his desire not to risk picking up injuries to key players against Arsenal after seeing City clearly adopting the same approach against them.

Arsenal vs Man City title race going down to the wire

It increasingly looks like this season’s Premier League title race will go down to the last day of the season.

See below for both team’s final two matches, with Arsenal two points ahead of City as things stand…

Arsenal Manchester City
Burnley (H) Bournemouth (A)
Crystal Palace (A) Aston Villa (H)

Arsenal will no doubt be big favourites to beat Burnley on Monday night, and if they do then there’s always a chance that City could drop points away to Bournemouth and gift the title to the Gunners in that game.

City’s trip to Bournemouth will come just a few days after the FA Cup final, but it’s also worth noting that Pep Guardiola’s side are in superb form right now, so it’s hard to see them dropping points anywhere.

Still, if Arsenal get two wins from those final two games, against an already-relegated Burnley and a Palace second string XI, then City’s results won’t matter and the title will be heading to the Emirates Stadium.

Deal on: Man Utd transfer target available, could also have major repercussions for Arsenal

14 May 2026 at 14:39

It looks like Paris Saint-Germain are prepared to let Goncalo Ramos go this summer, with Manchester United one of the clubs interested.

The Portugal international has struggled to establish himself as a regular for PSG, so it makes sense that he could now be available on the market.

According to journalist Ekrem Konur, Ramos is attracting interest from Man Utd and Arsenal, while he could also be involved in PSG’s potential deal with Atletico Madrid for Julian Alvarez.

See below for details as the Ramos saga hots up ahead of the summer transfer window…

— Ekrem KONUR (@Ekremkonur) May 14, 2026

Ramos could be a tempting option for Atletico to replace Alvarez up front, with the 24-year-old proving a pretty reliable goal-scorer with 45 goals in 129 games for PSG, following on from 41 goals in 106 appearances for Benfica.

While Alvarez is considered hot property at the moment, it’s also easy to imagine Ramos doing a perfectly good job for Diego Simeone’s side next season if he does end up joining.

Goncalo Ramos available for transfer – could he be a good option for Arsenal or Manchester United?

Ramos seemingly also has admirers in the Premier League, but it’s perhaps a bit harder to see him being a success in English football.

Want more CaughtOffside coverage? Add us as a preferred source on Google to your favourites list for news you can trust

The standards in the Premier League are exceptionally high these days, so it would probably be useful for clubs like United and Arsenal to get a look at how Ramos performs for a club at the level of Brentford, Fulham, or Everton before judging if he’s good enough to play for one of the big six.

United could probably do with more options up front after a mixed debut season from Benjamin Sesko, while Arsenal also have to look at that centre-forward spot after Viktor Gyokeres’ slightly hit-and-miss campaign.

Alvarez is probably more the kind of level Arsenal would want, but they could miss out if PSG are able to agree a swap deal with Atletico.

Former Chelsea manager urges them to pick coach who has done “wonderful things”

14 May 2026 at 14:09

Former Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo has suggested that it would be the best choice for the Blues to hire Xabi Alonso as their replacement for Liam Rosenior.

Speaking to Ladbrokes at the launch of Ladisfaction, Di Matteo made it clear that he’s a big fan of Alonso, praising him for doing “wonderful things” during his time in Germany with Bayer Leverkusen.

Di Matteo, who won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2012, also praised Alonso’s style of football and the useful experience he’d have gained from managing the big names and egos in the Real Madrid dressing room.

The former Chelsea boss is also a fan of ex-Blues midfielder Cesc Fabregas, but seems to be leaning towards Alonso as his preferred choice.

Xabi Alonso over Cesc Fabregas for the Chelsea manager job?

Alonso did remarkable work during his time in charge of Leverkusen, winning them their first ever Bundesliga title, whilst also reaching the final of the Europa League.

The Spanish tactician was a little unlucky with the Real Madrid job this season, having won 24 out of 34 games in charge before being dismissed.

One imagines Alonso could surely get his coaching career back on track at Chelsea, and it seems Di Matteo is a big fan.

“In terms of managers, I actually think there are so many good names around,” Di Matteo said.

“Cesc Fabregas is one of them, Xabi Alonso also did wonderful things in Germany… these are the kind of names I think Chelsea should be looking at.

“They are both progressive managers who like to play a certain style. Both have proven they’re capable – Alonso probably a little more than Fabregas, who is still early on in his managerial career.

“Alonso has certainly shown he can bring trophies, though, and now has the experience of a big dressing room, from his time with Real Madrid. So there are certainly managers out there who would be a good fit for our club.”

If Chelsea don’t move for Alonso then another top club surely will – do you see the Blues winning the race? Give us your thoughts in the comments!

Sources: “Made his mind up” – Exclusive update on Alisson’s Liverpool future

14 May 2026 at 13:19

Arne Slot answered questions about the future of Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker today, and I thought I’d share some information that’s been sent my way.

There have been reports about Alisson already agreeing terms with Juventus, but what’s really going on?

According to well-connected sources who’ve asked to remain anonymous to protect relationships, it’s a little more complicated than that, even if the interest from Juve is genuine.

Multiple sources also confirmed to me that Alisson has responded positively to an approach from Juventus, though they stopped short of saying he’s already agreed terms on the move, so I can’t confirm that for now even if it’s possible that there’s some justification in interpreting the situation that way.

Liverpool could block Alisson transfer

One complication in all this is that Liverpool are expected to push for Alisson to stay, even if Slot wouldn’t give too much away when asked about the situation today.

“I am reading the same as you but I won’t talk about it here. You can ask as many times as you want in different ways, but our fans need to support Alisson if it’s his first game or his last game,” the Dutchman told his press conference, as quoted by Empire of the Kop.

?? Slot on Alisson's future: "I am reading the same as you but I won't talk about it here. You can ask as many times as you want in different ways, but our fans need to support Alisson if it's his first game or his last game."

— Empire of the Kop (@empireofthekop) May 14, 2026

Internally at LFC, the feeling is that Alisson is still the number one and they hope to persuade him to reject any other offers, though some sources indicate that the most likely outcome is still for the player himself to seek a new challenge.

“Juventus have a strong interest in Alisson and he’s responded positively to their interest, he’s been impressed by their project,” one source said. “For now it looks like Liverpool will try to keep him but it’s possible, or even likely that he’s already made his mind up to try something different.”

Another source added: “Alisson is very tempted by Juventus. There’s also background interest from Inter Milan, but it’s quite advanced with Juve now, I’d expect that to go through.”

Alisson transfer details

My understanding is that Juventus are ready to offer Alisson a three-year contract worth around €15m a year, and the Brazilian has indicated he’d accept those terms.

Nothing has been fully agreed yet, however, especially as Liverpool and Juventus would still need to negotiate a transfer fee, with the 33-year-old still having one year left on his Reds contract.

Club-to-club talks could follow soon, and it will be interesting to see how things progress.

For now, I’m not aware of Liverpool looking at replacement signings in goal, either because they will simply promote Giorgi Mamardashvili to number one, or because they are ultimately not expecting Alisson to leave.

“He will be with us” – Arne Slot confirms midfielder’s Liverpool situation

14 May 2026 at 12:46

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has made it clear that midfielder Harvey Elliott will be returning to Anfield this summer, though after that it’s less certain what lies in store for him.

Elliott has been out on loan at Aston Villa this season, but has played only four times for Unai Emery’s side in the Premier League, and just nine times in all competitions.

Overall, it’s hard to imagine the 23-year-old’s loan spell at Villa Park could’ve gone much worse, and that could make it tricky for Liverpool to offload him this summer.

Speaking at his press conference today, Slot couldn’t provide much of a long-term outlook on Elliott, simply confirming that the England Under-21 international would be returning to the club this summer…

?? Slot on Harvey Elliott's future: "He is contracted to us, so he will be with us at the start of next season." #LFC

— Empire of the Kop (@empireofthekop) May 14, 2026

“He is contracted to us, so he will be with us at the start of next season,” Slot told reporters, as quoted by Empire of the Kop.

Can Harvey Elliott turn his career around?

Even if Slot currently expects Elliott back at Liverpool this summer, it’s hard to imagine it will be for very long.

Elliott had already fallen out of favour at LFC prior to his loan move, and his total lack of impact at Villa surely means the writing is on the wall for him.

It’s going to be a challenge from here for Elliott to rebuild his career, with the former Fulham wonderkid really struggling to live up to the potential he showed early on when he first broke through.

There’ll probably be some clubs out there who’d be open to giving Elliott a chance, but for now it could be a challenge for Liverpool to find buyers.

More likely would be another loan spell, so the Reds will have to hope that can transpire and end up being a better opportunity to put him in the shop window for future transfer windows.

The Blues recently sacked Liam Rosenior and now plan to move quickly for a replacement, with Alonso and Iraola seeming to be two main candidates.

There have been a few names linked in recent times, but Alonso is available and has a fine reputation in the game, with Ben Jacobs recently posting the below on X about the Spanish tactician being a leading candidate for the vacancy at Stamford Bridge…

— Ben Jacobs (@JacobsBen) May 11, 2026

Now Romano has also spoken on his YouTube channel about Alonso and Iraola, giving some sense of Chelsea’s plans.

Fabrizio Romano on Chelsea’s manager search

Discussing the CFC links with Alonso and Iraola, Romano said: “I think in the next days we will update also on the Chelsea manager situation. What I can confirm is that my understanding apart from Xabi Alonso conversations with his agent, and Xabi Alonso would be open to returning to the Premier League.

“And Raiola who wants to stay in the Premier League and would be excited about the possibility to do that at Chelsea eventually.

“So apart from the managers being mentioned, the idea at Chelsea is to get the new manager as soon as possible before the workup. This is the plan. So in almost one month for sure Chelsea want to have everything already signed, already announced, already completed. This is the timing in mind at Chelsea. Then obviously this depends on the conversations on talks.

“So let’s wait and see how this will continue but Chelsea are moving forward with the project and the idea to appoint a new manager as soon as possible.”

Can anyone save Chelsea from their current crisis?

Chelsea is a difficult project right now, so it’s not going to be easy for even the best managers to come in and work in these conditions.

This ownership have proven tough to work with, and impatient for results straight away, despite the contradictory approach of signing large numbers of young players for the future.

Alonso impressed and performed well beyond expectations at Bayer Leverkusen, but then struggled at Real Madrid, so it will be interesting to see how those contrasting experiences set him up for the Chelsea job if that is where he ends up going.

Why 2026 could be the most important Premier League summer in years

14 May 2026 at 11:43

Big transfers, managerial shake-ups, financial pressure and a looming World Cup are all crashing together. The summer of 2026 looks like a crossroads for the Premier League, and fans all over England are already bracing for pure chaos in just a few months.

Every summer in the Premier League carries its own drama. There’s always that club splashing big money, another one scrambling to fix a mess and a newly promoted side just trying to survive. But 2026? Even now, before anything’s really started, it feels different.

You can sense it building around English football; big stories are about to run headlong into each other. Some of the league’s biggest clubs stand at turning points.

A new cycle is beginning

Football is all about cycles. The best teams rise, hit their peak and then need shaking up. Right now, that’s happening to loads of clubs at once in the Premier League. Manchester City are heading into uncharted territory after years of crushing the league. Plenty of their key players from the title-winning era are now in their thirties or nearing the end of their contracts.

Over at Liverpool, they’re still settling into a new era after the big departures of recent legends. The squad’s still got talent, but everyone knows the next rebuild needs to happen fast if they want to stay near the top in Europe.

Why fans should be excited

Uncertainty, that’s what makes the Premier League so much fun. If the same team wins every year, the magic fades. Right now, though, the race looks wide open. Several clubs genuinely believe they can win it. Others are scared of falling behind. Pressure’s everywhere.

And the drama doesn’t stop on the pitch. Football entertainment is everywhere; podcasts, YouTube channels, streaming and even gaming. More fans than ever follow the game through new media, not just on TV. Platforms covering gaming and entertainment are now part of the football world. Fans checking transfer rumors or Premier League winner odds might be in the same places chatting about video games, movies and TV. The culture around football is blending into all sorts of other pop culture.

Financial rules are changing the game

Gone are the days when clubs could spend endlessly without a care. Premier League teams are now dealing with stricter financial rules than ever before. Profit and sustainability regulations are front and center, and a bunch of clubs have already felt the pinch in recent seasons.

So, summer 2026 probably won’t be about the biggest and flashiest signings. Smart and strategic recruitment will dominate. Fans might have to change their dreams of blockbuster deals. Spending a hundred million pounds on one player just isn’t something top clubs can all pull off anymore.

Managers could define the entire season

Another reason this summer feels enormous? The uncertainty swirling around Premier League managers. The league’s always been cutthroat, but now things move even quicker. One bad season, and suddenly a manager’s standing is totally up in the air.

A lot of clubs might face big calls this summer. Stick or twist? Trust the current project, or start fresh? Go with a young manager, or bring back an old hand? Those choices matter a lot. The manager market can be just as important as the player market.

The 2026 World Cup complicates everything

Normally, Premier League clubs build squads for a pretty straightforward domestic campaign. But there’s a huge new headache: The 2026 FIFA World Cup. The World Cup in 2026 will throw up weird scheduling and fitness issues. Clubs know their best players might come back worn out, hurt, or just drained from international duty.

So, building a deep squad is crucial. Managers will need to target players who are flexible, guys who can cover different positions and handle a packed schedule. Rotation matters more than ever. Clubs still in Europe could rack up an insane number of matches.

Young talent is about to take centre stage

One of the best things about this next transfer window? All the fresh talent coming through. All over the league, trust in young players is growing. Academies are churning out top quality, technical footballers faster than ever. For many clubs, leaning on homegrown stars is both smart business and smart football.

Fans love seeing players come up through the ranks. There’s something special about watching an academy graduate in the first team. It creates a real connection, and gives clubs a better shot at lasting success instead of constantly chasing after big and expensive signings.

A summer that could shape the next era

Here’s why the summer of 2026 matters so much: Too many major stories are converging at once. Spending rules are changing how teams buy players. Old powerhouse clubs are rebuilding. Up-and-comers are getting ambitious. The pressure on managers is sky-high. Young talent is about to take over. And there’s a World Cup coming that will shake up everything.

Chances “increasing and increasing” for Man Utd to agree deal for fan-favourite, says Fabrizio Romano

14 May 2026 at 11:36

Manchester United reportedly look increasingly likely to hire Michael Carrick as manager permanently after his impressive spell as interim manager.

The former Man Utd midfielder, who has looked like the popular choice for fans for some time now due to his strong start and obvious connection to the club from his playing days, seems to have earned the job at Old Trafford, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, the Italian journalist explained that Carrick’s chances have been “increasing and increasing” for some time now with every passing game.

Carrick’s record in this spell reads as 10 wins, three draws, and two defeats from 15 games in charge, with United now in third place in the Premier League and looking forward to Champions League football next season.

Fabrizio Romano on Michael Carrick

As we previously reported, Andoni Iraola had also been in the frame for the United job, but Carrick is now the clear frontrunner.

The 44-year-old could now be set to finalise things soon, with Romano reporting on all-round positive feelings between all parties.

“For months, basically since mid-February … I always told you the chances of Michael Carrick are increasing and increasing and increasing after every win, after every performance,” Romano said.

Want more CaughtOffside coverage? Add us as a preferred source on Google to your favourites list for news you can trust

“But let me say it’s not just about this. It’s also about the feeling he has with the top players in the dressing room, with the management, with the fans of course, who love him.

“So the feeling has always been very positive and now I can confirm on the same direction that Michael Carrick is expected to continue as Manchester United permanent manager from next season.

“This is the feeling, waiting for the formal process, because at the end of the day it’s always Sir Him Ratcliffe, the co-owner of Manchester United who has to say ‘okay it’s all approved, we move forward and we proceed’. But internally – management, players, directors, everyone at the club made a very clear decision – Carrick has to stay as Manchester United permanent manager.”

Is Michael Carrick the right choice for Manchester United?

United have not had a lot of luck with their managerial appointments since Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, with a variety of different coaches bringing different playing styles, philosophies, and levels of experience all failing.

In some ways, the relatively inexperienced Carrick looks like a bit of a gamble, but it’s also clear that any manager would be a gamble.

For now, United can at least see what Carrick is capable of, and if the feeling between him and everyone else at Old Trafford is proving so positive, then that’s a good position to start from.

Report: Man United star’s wages could complicate transfer situation

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana could reportedly see his wages go up this summer due to the club’s qualification for the Champions League.

The Cameroon international has been out on loan at Trabzonspor this season and surely has no long-term future at Old Trafford after his poor form there.

Still, it might also prove tricky to offload him this summer due to his high wages, according to a report from ESPN.

Unsurprisingly, it seems that Onana is not in the Red Devils’ plans, according to ESPN, but that doesn’t mean that they’ll necessarily be able to get rid of him as quickly as they would have liked.

Andre Onana one of the worst Manchester United signings of recent times

Onana may have bounced back reasonably well during his stint on loan in Turkey this term, but he’s undoubtedly proven a dire signing for United.

The post-Sir Alex Ferguson era has been littered with expensive flops like this, but Onana is certainly up there alongside the likes of Angel Di Maria, Jadon Sancho, and Antony as the worst of the bunch.

The 30-year-old will be remembered for some awful individual errors that led to goals, and the fact that he’s now eating into their wage bill and proving hard to shift just shows how much these deals can continue to cost a club even when the player is no longer part of the team.

Senne Lammens has proven a significant upgrade since joining United last summer and quickly becoming the new number one.

United will be pleased to have that position sorted on the pitch, but away from it the Onana saga continues to haunt them.

Yan Diomande name-drops Chelsea as Liverpool target breaks silence on transfer situation

14 May 2026 at 10:24

RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande has broken his silence on transfer rumours over his future, with the player perhaps suggesting he’s ready to stay where he is.

The Ivory Coast international has been one of this season’s breakthrough stars, weighing in with 13 goals and seven assists in all competitions at the age of just 19.

Liverpool have perhaps been linked most strongly with Diomande, with TEAMtalk claiming that talks seemed to be progressing well.

However, Fabrizio Romano has spoken on his YouTube channel about Diomande possibly staying and signing a new contract with Leipzig.

Speaking about his situation now, as quoted by the Athletic, it sounds like Diomande is certainly not ruling that out.

Yan Diomande responds to transfer speculation

When asked about a transfer, Diomande name-dropped Chelsea as a big club that it’s flattering to be linked with.

It’s interesting that the 19-year-old didn’t mention Liverpool, and he also made it clear just how much he’d like to repay Leipzig for their faith in him.

“Imagine people say you go to Chelsea or Real Madrid to do this job…you’re going to be happy and motivated to do more,” Diomande said.

“I don’t think about it too much because my focus is on the pitch, my job is playing football, that takes care of everything, but it gives me a lot of motivation to see people talking about me.”

He added: “It’s not just about playing football. Most people can only see what happens on the pitch, but the club (Leipzig) has helped me so much with my family and my mum.

“Young kids like me, I have a lot of things that happen, but nobody knows other than the club. They did a lot for me so I’m grateful and all I can do is help them on the pitch.”

Should Yan Diomande move now or wait?

Diomande looks like he surely has a big career ahead of him, but we have occasionally seen players moving too soon.

For now, it could be wise for this talented young attacker to stay where he is, ensure he’s playing regularly, and continue his development.

Liverpool look like they need someone of Diomande’s profile, but a lot of the club’s big signings from last summer proved to be flops, so there are no guarantees on either side.

Chelsea also looks like a risky move right now as the long list of young players signed by the Blues in recent times has only yielded a few success stories.

Unhappy Newcastle United star becomes transfer target for Atletico Madrid

14 May 2026 at 10:02

Newcastle United forward Nick Woltemade is reportedly unhappy with life at St James’ Park and is attracting transfer interest from Atletico Madrid.

DOWNLOAD THE OFFICIAL CAUGHTOFFSIDE APP FOR ALL THE LATEST & BREAKING UPDATES – STRAIGHT TO YOUR PHONE! ON APPLE & GOOGLE PLAY

The Germany international initially started brightly for Newcastle after joining from Stuttgart last summer, having also been highly regarded during his time in the Bundesliga.

Woltemade has ten goals and three assists in total for the Magpies, but just one of those goals has come in 2026 as his form has completely deserted him in the second half of the season.

According to Bild, Woltemade is unhappy at Newcastle and Atletico are one of the main clubs looking at his situation and considering offering him a career lifeline.

Nick Woltemade surely set for transfer out of Newcastle

For one reason or another, it’s just not happened for Woltemade at Newcastle and it now seems very hard to imagine him staying at the club this summer.

Discussing Woltemade’s future recently, Christian Falk wrote in his CF Bayern Insider column that the player might be willing to stay, but it’s more from Newcastle’s end that the pair seem set to go their separate ways.

Want more CaughtOffside coverage? Add us as a preferred source on Google to your favourites list for news you can trust

In another column, Falk also mentioned long-term interest from Bayern Munich, so perhaps they’ll be alongside Atletico as suitors for the 24-year-old if he does end up leaving.

Newcastle to try again for new striker?

If Woltemade leaves, NUFC could really do with trying again to fix their striker issues, with Yoane Wissa also proving poor since joining last summer.

It was never going to be easy for Eddie Howe and co. to replace the departing Alexander Isak, and, in fairness, in Woltemade it looked for a while like they’d actually done a decent job.

It now seems impossible to ignore, however, that they need to rip this all up and start again with some better striker recruitment this year.

“Now is the right time” – Man United set to step up pursuit of £100m transfer after key development

14 May 2026 at 09:38

Manchester United are reportedly now expected to approach Nottingham Forest over the potential transfer of Elliot Anderson.

The England international remains one of their top targets as they look for two new signings in midfield this summer.

That’s according to Ben Jacobs, speaking to Give Me Sport, as he tips Man Utd to start to try moving quickly for new additions in midfield, with now looking like a good time to approach Forest as they’ve secured Premier League survival.

DOWNLOAD THE OFFICIAL CAUGHTOFFSIDE APP FOR ALL THE LATEST & BREAKING UPDATES – STRAIGHT TO YOUR PHONE! ON APPLE & GOOGLE PLAY

The Red Devils will be bidding farewell to Casemiro as he comes to the end of his contract this summer, while Manuel Ugarte’s poor form surely means he won’t be in the club’s plans and could perhaps leave.

Anderson seems like an ideal target for United to go for in that position, and Jacobs has provided some insight into why we could now see things starting to move a bit quicker.

Elliot Anderson to Manchester United transfer update

“So Manchester United are going to move quite quickly on at least two midfielders because Manuel Ugarte could be sold, Casemiro is leaving, and the top priority still remains Elliot Anderson,” Jacobs said.

“Manchester United will start now to find out the price, because the thing that’s moved with Elliot Anderson is the ability to go to Nottingham Forest, which wasn’t the case when they were still in Europe or before they had secured their Premier League safety.

“So although Elliot Anderson is not agitating or desperate to have a new club before the World Cup, now is the right time to go to Nottingham Forest.

“The potential price has always been extreme because it’s been variable, because naturally in the early part of the season, it looked like Forest could go down and not get any European football, and in that scenario, it would have likely put suitors in a stronger position.

“Now we’re somewhere in the middle because Forest haven’t been able to get to the Europa League final or get Champions League football, but they are a Premier League club.”

Can United beat City to Elliot Anderson?

As Give Me Sport’s report notes, United will likely face competition from Manchester City for Anderson, so it will be interesting to see which Manchester club comes out on top.

City is probably the more reliable project in many ways, but there’s also no doubt that United look like a team on the up after showing big improvement since Michael Carrick took over as interim manager.

There might also be some uncertainty at City at the moment amid doubts over Pep Guardiola’s future, as well as the unresolved 115 charges case still looming in the background.

United really need a statement signing to help take this promising project forward, so if they could beat City to Anderson that would be just the lift everyone at Old Trafford needs.

When can Arsenal win the title? How Manchester City can take it to the final day

13 May 2026 at 22:42

There’ll be plenty of anxious Gooners now wondering when Arsenal can win the Premier League title as they hold a narrow advantage with just two games left.

Their closest rivals Manchester City, however, have a game in hand, which means that five-point lead is not necessarily as comfortable as it looks.

At this point, sites like BetGoodwin football betting will have Arsenal as the clear favourites, but it’s not over yet, and this season has been full of twists and turns as both Mikel Arteta and Pep Guardiola’s sides have failed to take numerous opportunities to run away with it.

So, let’s take a look at the final few games and see where the title could be won and lost.

Key remaining fixtures in the title race

13th May – Manchester City vs Crystal Palace
18th May – Arsenal vs Burnley
19th May – Bournemouth vs Manchester City
24th May – Crystal Palace vs Arsenal, Manchester City vs Aston Villa

To start with, the simplest outcome here is simply that Arsenal win their final two games against Burnley and Palace, in which case they will win the league regardless of what City do.

However, if Arsenal beat Burnley, then City need to beat both Palace and Bournemouth to take the title race to the final day.

Want more CaughtOffside coverage? Add us as a preferred source on Google to your favourites list for news you can trust

First up for Guardiola’s men is tonight’s game against Palace at the Etihad Stadium, and anything other than three points means Arsenal can celebrate wrapping up the title in front of their own fans with a victory over Burnley on Monday night.

Alternatively, if City win this evening and Arsenal beat Burnley, there’s still a chance for the title to be decided in that Bournemouth game, with a draw again enough in that game to mathematically confirm Arteta’s side as champions without them kicking a ball.

Could goal difference still decide the destination of the title?

It’s perhaps not that likely, but the title could still be decided on goal difference, or potentially even goals scored.

One imagines the most realistic way for this to happen would be if City win all of their last three games, and Arsenal win one game and draw the other against either Burnley or Palace.

DOWNLOAD THE OFFICIAL CAUGHTOFFSIDE APP FOR ALL THE LATEST & BREAKING UPDATES – STRAIGHT TO YOUR PHONE! ON APPLE & GOOGLE PLAY

That would put both sides on 83 points, meaning the margin of those victories becomes crucial.

As things stand, Arsenal’s goal difference is 42, but City are close behind with a goal difference of 40.

So, let’s take a hypothetical scenario where Arsenal beat Burnley 2-0 but draw 0-0 with Palace on the final day, giving them 83 points and a goal difference of 42.

If City were to win all their remaining games 1-0 that would give them 83 points and a goal difference of 43, giving them the title by the narrowest of margins.

This just shows how much every kick will count in the next few games, as just one extra goal for Arsenal against Burnley in that scenario gives them the title even if they have one more slip-up on the final day.

Who do you think will win the title? Let us know in the comments!

17 G/A star “being assessed by Liverpool” as transfer talks expected soon

13 May 2026 at 17:16

Liverpool are reportedly assessing Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola as a potential transfer target for this summer.

We’ve previously reported on the Reds being keen on Barcola, with some talks expected to take place soon amid growing doubts over his future at PSG.

The France international has an impressive record of 12 goals and five assists in Ligue 1 and the Champions League so far this season, and it would make sense for him to pursue a move in order to get more first-team football.

See below as reliable Liverpool journalist David Lynch says that Barcola is one of the names being assessed ahead of the summer…

Barcola scores 19/25, with his high transfer fee being the main downside, but not enough to suggest LFC shouldn’t try to get a deal done.

Even if the 23-year-old would be on the pricey side, he’s young enough that he can keep improving and prove a superb long-term signing for Liverpool.

Liverpool need a top winger this summer

Everyone at Liverpool will be aware that this needs to be a big summer in terms of strengthening in attack after Mohamed Salah’s dip in form and his confirmation that he’ll be leaving Anfield at the end of his contract.

It won’t be easy to replace a legendary figure like Salah, but Barcola looks like an option worth considering after his fine form for PSG.

If Liverpool aren’t quick there’s also the worry that other big clubs will get there first, as one imagines there’ll surely be a long list of suitors ready to pounce if he does leave the Parc des Princes.

Player discussed: Man Utd rival Arsenal & Liverpool for “powerful” midfielder signing

13 May 2026 at 16:40

Manchester United are reportedly rivalling the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool for the potential transfer of Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jobe Bellingham.

The younger brother of Real Madrid and England star Jude Bellingham is now attracting growing interest from top clubs ahead of the summer after an improvement in form.

Bellingham joined Dortmund from Sunderland last summer and started slowly in Germany, though he’s now fully established himself as a key player in the team.

According to TEAMtalk, this has Man United showing an interest in Bellingham as one of a number of options to strengthen their midfield, though they’re not alone.

Jobe Bellingham has suitors but Dortmund don’t want to sell

Even if the Red Devils have been discussing Bellingham, it perhaps looks unrealistic for this summer as the 20-year-old has a four-year contract with BVB and they don’t want to let him go.

It remains to be seen if a deal could be struck for the right price, but Dortmund will surely feel they’re in a strong position here and under no pressure to sell.

United fans will be intrigued by this story, though with Bellingham looking like he could be a smart long-term investment for the club.

Even if the younger Bellingham is not quite as flashy and spectacular as his old brother Jude, he looks a solid midfielder and has previously been praised as “powerful” by Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris.

Discussing Bellingham’s playing style and role last season, as quoted by Goal, Le Bris said: “Jobe is so powerful. He wants to affect the game, he had good quality today. It’s not a big surprise for us but you have to do it on the pitch. He did very well today to score the second goal.

“I don’t have to say to Jobe, ‘you can score’, it’s just now a question of his position. We talk now a lot about positions on the pitch because if he can manage different situations, he can be involved in the build-up, in the high pressure and low pressure. But if you want to affect the score properly, the opposition has to be a little bit higher on the pitch.

“We spoke a lot about this position for our eights, especially for Jobe because out of possession he plays as a six. So it’s not easy to find the right balance with the offensive part of the game.

“He played the first game of the season higher on the pitch like with two strikers, then as a midfielder. It was easier to find the right position and adjustment. I think he’s doing well. He learns so very quickly.”

New: Spurs attacker looks set for summer transfer as preliminary agreement reached

13 May 2026 at 14:59

Tottenham’s on-loan striker Randal Kolo Muani is reportedly looking set for a possible transfer from Paris Saint-Germain to Juventus.

The France international has not had the most positive impact during his spell at Spurs this season, making a return to parent club PSG a likely option.

From there, it looks like there may already be a preliminary agreement for Kolo Muani to return to former club Juventus, according to French outlet Le 10 Sport.

Kolo Muani has had a difficult few years, scoring only 11 goals in 54 appearances for PSG, and a total of only five in 38 games on loan at Tottenham this season.

In between that, the 27-year-old’s best form seemed to come during a loan with Juventus, where he scored ten times in 22 appearances.

Randal Kolo Muani set to leave Tottenham and seal Juventus transfer

It seems an agreement is more or less already in place for PSG to let Kolo Muani go to Juventus once his loan deal at Spurs comes to an end.

Some THFC fans may be disappointed that this deal didn’t work out better, but it certainly seems like the best thing now would be to make numerous changes to this struggling squad after an awful season of fighting against relegation.

It may well be that Tottenham still end up going down, but either way it surely makes little sense for Kolo Muani to be a long-term part of their rebuilding plans.

Juventus, meanwhile, could benefit from bringing the Frenchman in as they have Dusan Vlahovic coming towards the end of his contract.

Kolo Muani may not be the best striker in the world, but he’d probably be available on the cheap and he’s shown he can do the job in Serie A.

Liverpool and Arsenal have also been linked with the 25-year-old in recent times by the Telegraph and others, but it seems he could be about to continue his career away from the Premier League.

Newcastle will surely be keen to keep hold of Gordon, but if they get a big fee for him and are able to prevent him moving to a rival, that might go down as good business and an acceptable compromise.

Report: Arsenal lining up historic €90m transfer investment as initial talks held

13 May 2026 at 14:05

Arsenal are reportedly lining up a €90m transfer bid for Real Madrid attacking midfielder Arda Guler after initial talks between intermediaries.

Guler is greatly admired by Arsenal, and we’ve previously reported here on the Gunners pursuing the Turkey international ahead of this summer.

It seems there’s now been an update as Spanish outlet Fichajes claim Arsenal are preparing to make a ‘historic investment’ of around €90m to sign Guler.

The report adds, however, that Guler himself has indicated that he’s flattered but not looking for a move, while Real Madrid also don’t want to sell.

Could Arsenal seal Arda Guler transfer swoop?

There could still be a chance for Arsenal, though, as Fichajes’ report also suggests that the change in manager at the Bernabeu this summer could cause some uncertainty.

Jose Mourinho is expected to take over, and it’s fair to say that Guler doesn’t exactly seem like an obvious fit for the Portuguese tactician’s preferred style of football.

Want more CaughtOffside coverage? Add us as a preferred source on Google to your favourites list for news you can trust

Arsenal could also be a tempting project for a player like Guler, as the 21-year-old looks like an ideal candidate to come in and provide an alternative and perhaps a long-term replacement for the increasingly injury-prone Martin Odegaard.

Arsenal are also competing for a remarkable Premier League and Champions League double this season, with just three more wins required to give them what would surely be the greatest season in their entire history.

That would help lure players like Guler to the Emirates Stadium, especially as things haven’t exactly gone that smoothly in Madrid this season with another trophyless campaign and plenty of bad blood in the dressing room.

Manchester City handed Rodri boost

Rodri is a hugely important player for City, so this will surely be seen as hugely positive news for the club, even if the 29-year-old has had some recent injury problems.

MCFC could do with strengthening in midfield this summer, as Rodri will surely need more rest soon after becoming someone that Pep Guardiola is so heavily reliant on.

Sky Sports have been among the outlets to strongly link City with Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, and bringing in someone like that could be ideal to help the club eventually replace Rodri.

For now, however, it’s clear that Rodri remains one of the very best players in the world in his position and not someone City would want to lose to a Champions League rival like Real Madrid.

Casemiro and Man United legend mock Carragher after “big disrespect” from Sky Sports pundit

Casemiro had a difficult spell towards the end of his second season at Man Utd, prompting Carragher to suggest he was finished in the Premier League and urging him to leave the football before the football leaves him.

Remarkably, two years later Casemiro is still at United and is set to depart as something of a cult hero this summer once his contract expires.

The former Real Madrid man has done well to get back to his best with the Red Devils and is now sure to always have a special place in the fans’ hearts, even if he clearly wasn’t at the peak of his powers during his time at Old Trafford.

Casemiro and Rio Ferdinand mock Jamie Carragher

Watch below as Casemiro speaks with United legend Rio Ferdinand about a number of topics, including Carragher’s controversial comments…

Casemiro admitted it was “big disrespect” towards him considering the career he’d had, though the pair also enjoyed a joke at Carragher’s expense as Casemiro couldn’t remember his name.

The interview makes for interesting viewing as Ferdinand also goes on to tell Casemiro that he’d heard about his strong mentality when speaking to one of Ruben Amorim’s coaches.

When the 34-year-old was struggling to start games, it seems he never switched off in training and worked as hard as possible to get back into the team, taking advice on how he could improve.

Ferdinand was hugely impressed by this as Casemiro has of course won five Champions League titles, so could be forgiven for thinking that there’s little more he can learn in the game.

World Cup Dark Horses

13 May 2026 at 11:16

The World Cup 2026 is drawing ever closer. As most of the domestic competitions in Europe
approach their climax, attention will soon divert to the largest-ever World Cup, with 48
nations battling it out to be crowned champion. There have only ever been eight different
winners of the most prestigious competition in international football, and the likelihood of that
changing this year seems to be remote.

That’s not to say that there won’t be a few shocks in store this summer, however. World
Cups always throw up some surprising games and results. Anyone planning to place World
Cup bets on a winner might want to look at a previous champion, but these extended finals
promise a lot of drama and excitement along the way. MyTopSportsbooks is a great place to find the best place to make your World Cup predictions, but if you need a little more information on some of the less-fancied teams, this article has all you need to know about potential dark horses at World Cup 2026.

Mexico

Host nations are well-known to overachieve in front of their own fans, with South Korea’s
march to the semifinal stage in 2002 a good example. There are, of course, three co-hosts of
this summer’s tournament, but it is Mexico that might spring a surprise. Mexico has much more of a World Cup pedigree, having featured at the last eight finals and hosting two before that. El Tri has historically been the powerhouse of North American football and, while that has changed somewhat, there is promise in a squad that has more players from Liga MX than in the past. If all goes well, Mexico will play on home soil until the quarterfinals and is very difficult to score against. In the heat of North America, this is one local team that could do well.

DOWNLOAD THE OFFICIAL CAUGHTOFFSIDE APP FOR ALL THE LATEST & BREAKING UPDATES – STRAIGHT TO YOUR PHONE! ON APPLE & GOOGLE PLAY

Scotland

This nation hasn’t qualified for a World Cup finals since 1998, but back-to-back appearances
at the European Championship have boosted confidence in a team that is home to a number
of stars of the EPL and Serie A. Topping a qualification group that also included World Cup
regular Denmark was just the latest example of Scotland’s improvement. Steve Clarke’s men will do well to beat the drama of the final qualifying game against Denmark, in which two stoppage-time goals booked a finals berth. But a sense of togetherness among the squad could cause some upsets this summer, with the talismanic Scott McTominay keen to carry on the good form he has shown at Napoli. One thing’s for sure, the Scottish fans will do everything they can to make every game a special occasion.

Türkiye

Don’t be fooled by Türkiye’s need for a playoff victory against Bosnia into thinking that this is a team to disregard this summer. You shouldn’t really take anything from the fact that Türkiye have only ever featured at two World Cup finals either, even if the last appearance was in 2002. An exciting young squad, packed with talent, Türkiye could go far. It is true that Türkiye has been many people’s dark horse at the last two European Championships and has largely disappointed, but a good showing in the group stage could act as a springboard for the rest of the tournament. Türkiye doesn’t face the US until the last game of the opening phase and, by then, the likes of Arda Güler and Kenan Yildiz may have already made an impact.

Ecuador

When it comes to South America, most fans will be expecting to see Argentina and Brazil
progressing to the latter stages. But it is Ecuador that took CONMEBOL qualifying by storm,
only finishing second to the current World champion and losing just twice in a marathon 18-
game schedule.

La Tri has impressed in friendlies since booking a place at the finals as well, including
drawing on the road in Mexico and the Netherlands. Led by Chelsea midfielder Moisés
Caceido, Ecuador has a squad full of players plying their trade in Europe and Brazil, but a
tough group draw could be a sticking point. Both Germany and the Ivory Coast will be tough
opponents, but anything could happen if there is progression from the opening phase.

Egypt

Morocco was the surprise team of the last World Cup, with its deep run only ending at the
semifinal stage against France. The Atlas Lions had beaten both Spain and Portugal along
the way, and their great rival, Egypt, will now be looking to emulate that feat this summer.
The Pharaohs may never have won a finals game in three separate attempts, but an
expanded format might suit them this time.

Egypt will kick off its finals against Belgium, and any kind of result there would set them up
nicely. Even a battling defeat would spur them on in their remaining two games. This will
surely be the last chance for Mo Salah to shine on the global stage, and his teammates will
be doing everything they can to send him off in a fitting manner.

Want more CaughtOffside coverage? Add us as a preferred source on Google to your favourites list for news you can trust

Norway

Finally, possibly the quintessential dark horse for this summer’s World Cup. Norway is
another nation that hasn’t competed at a finals since 1998, but big things are expected of the
Scandinavians this year. That has a lot to do with the strength of its squad, but mostly because of the presence of Erling Haaland. Haaland has won everything in European club football while at Manchester City, but he has not been able to prove his worth on the international stage as yet. He will face some tough teams in the group stage, with Senegal and France coming up after an opening fixture against Iraq. Arne Slot’s time is up and there is “obvious” candidate to replace him, says ex-Liverpool star

13 May 2026 at 10:41

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy believes Arne Slot’s time as Reds manager is surely up, with Xabi Alonso the obvious candidate to replace him.

Although Slot won the Premier League title in a memorable first season at Anfield, this campaign has been far more challenging for the Dutch tactician.

It now looks like Slot is losing the support of the Liverpool home crowd, with boos ringing out during and after the 1-1 draw with Chelsea last weekend.

Murphy says he can’t see Slot coming back from this, even if he also feels it is in some way a bit harsh on the former Feyenoord manager.

Xabi Alonso the obvious choice to replace Arne Slot

Discussing Slot’s future with BBC Sport, Murphy made it clear that it now looks like a long way back to being able to win back the club’s fans.

Alonso looks like a strong option to replace Slot at Liverpool, though the pundit also admitted there could be some risk with that appointment as well due to the Spaniard’s struggles in his recent spell in charge of Real Madrid.

“The problem Slot has got, especially at one of the biggest clubs in the world, is that when the fanbase turns, you are really, really struggling to get them back unless you win every game, then not just win, but win in a style Liverpool fans expect and demand,” Murphy said.

He added: “Is there a suitable candidate who can move them forward? The obvious name out there is Xabi Alonso, who is available. He has got popularity, which is key because it gives you a few months’ grace. It also means everybody starts the season in a good place with a lot of energy.

“My only concern with Alonso is more to do with style. He struggled with man-management at Real Madrid but that’s a small concern.

“The gut feeling is that he likes possession with the Spanish mentality, but maybe I’m doing him an injustice because he played at Liverpool. He understands what the fans want. He also has the advantage of previously working with Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong at Leverkusen.

“If Alonso is a small risk, like anybody, you then ask is he still better than the situation they’re in? Unfortunately for Slot, I feel the answer is ‘yes’.

“I just don’t see a situation, irrelevant of transfer ins and outs – and there are going to be a lot in the summer – where the fans get back to being 100% behind Slot.

“For that to happen he will have to go on a run like he did in the first season, where he basically won every game. He then has to play in a certain way that Liverpool fans expect.

“I think Slot’s time is probably up. The main reason for saying this is not a dislike of him. I think he’s a good guy and a very bright coach, but the reality is Liverpool’s fanbase is as powerful as any out there, for all sorts of reasons. We know how strong they are in fighting the cause over tickets and other issues, not just the manager.

“I don’t remember a time when the fans turned on a manager then turned it back around.”

Could Liverpool miss out on Xabi Alonso?

Despite the obvious links with Alonso due to his availability and connection with LFC from his playing days, it seems like Chelsea are being increasingly strongly linked with the 44-year-old.

Give Me Sport have reported on positive talks between Chelsea and Alonso, so this seems like something that could advance soon.

If Liverpool are to make a change, then they might have to move quickly or else there might not be as good a candidate out there as Alonso.

Other names like Andoni Iraola, Oliver Glasner, and perhaps Cesc Fabregas will surely be mentioned, but they perhaps don’t look like as much of an obvious upgrade on Slot as Alonso could.

Sources: Man United given “signal” to move for €60m transfer, Arsenal have also held talks

13 May 2026 at 10:10

Manchester United have an interest in Sporting Lisbon midfielder and Arsenal transfer target Morten Hjulmand as he looks set to become available this summer.

I was recently made aware of the Gunners asking Sporting about Hjulmand when the two teams met in the Champions League quarter-finals, with Ousmane Diomande and Ivan Fresneda also on the agenda.

My understanding after fresh talks with sources in the industry is that Arsenal remain interested in Hjulmand, but that Man Utd are also keeping a close eye on the situation.

It’s widely known that the Red Devils are set to be busy with new midfield additions this summer, with two new faces likely to come in at Old Trafford.

Hjulmand is not necessarily at the top of that list of targets, but he’s a player the club have explored, and he could be available for €60m.

Morten Hjulmand transfer situation explained

A number of sources have confirmed to be that plenty of top clubs are keen on Hjulmand, and that Sporting seem to be open to doing business this summer for below his €80m release clause.

“Arsenal were in touch recently, Man United are also asking to be kept informed,” one source said.

“Sporting have given clubs the signal – he has a €80m release clause, but start negotiations at around €60m and there’s a chance he can go.

“This is their model, and has been for a long time. They know this is a chance to make significant profit on the player, and he’ll be keen to make the step up to a higher level as well.”

It’s worth noting, however, that one or two other sources were keen to play down the idea that this would be a simple and straightforward deal, with Sporting known for being tough negotiators, as they were when eventually reluctantly selling Viktor Gyokeres to Arsenal last summer.

What could be going on here is that Sporting hope to invite a bidding war for Hjulmand, which could mean his fee ends up rising well beyond €60m and closer to the €80m release clause fee.

Which clubs are eyeing Morten Hjulmand?

For now, Arsenal or United seem like the main names to watch for Hjulmand, but there are others too.

An interesting one will be Manchester City, because what United end up doing potentially impacts their plans a lot.

Both clubs really want Elliot Anderson, and although City are the favourites there has long been the sense that MUFC will keep pushing for that deal.

If they succeed, then City could move for Hjulmand as an alternative, but it’s still early days yet, and other targets will likely also be considered by both clubs.

It is also my understanding that Tottenham, Atletico Madrid, and Juventus will likely enter the conversation at some point this summer.

“Ultimate Premier League midfielder” increasingly targeted by Man Utd as transfer opportunity emerges

13 May 2026 at 09:25

Manchester United are reportedly stepping up their interest in West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes ahead of the summer.

The talented young Portugal international has shone for the Hammers, having previously also caught the eye during his time at former club Southampton.

Man Utd have several midfielders on their list for this summer, and it seems Fernandes increasingly looks like one of their main targets, according to Sky Sports.

The report explains that the Red Devils are looking for two new additions in that area of the pitch, and that they’re stepping up their interest in both West Ham’s Fernandes and Atalanta’s Ederson.

West Ham relegation threat boosts Man United’s Mateus Fernandes transfer hopes

West Ham lost 1-0 to Arsenal at the weekend as relegation now looks more and more likely with just two games left.

The Hammers are in 18th place, two points behind Tottenham, so there’s still some hope they could get out of the bottom three, but it’s clearly going to be difficult.

This means a talent like Fernandes is surely going to be on the radar of a lot of top clubs as the 21-year-old is simply too good to be playing in the Championship.

This is what we saw a year ago when he left Southampton after their relegation, with former Saints star Jo Tessem making it clear at the time that he didn’t see the club being able to keep him as he’s so clearly a Premier League player.

“Mateus Fernandes is on people’s radar because every week he plays his heart out, he is by far the best player on the football pitch from a Saints perspective,” Tessem told the BBC.

“He is becoming an ultimate Premier League midfielder and clubs are not going to let that go.

“He plays like a Premier League player. He passes like a Premier League player. He is quick like a Premier League player. He conducts himself so well in midfield.”

Who should Man United sign in midfield?

United will be bidding farewell to Casemiro once his contract expires this summer, while they could also do with replacing the out-of-favour Manuel Ugarte.

Two new midfielders are surely a must for this MUFC squad, and fans would likely be happy with the investment in a top young talent like Fernandes.

We’ve previously ranked United’s midfield targets, with Sky Sports still mentioning other big names like Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton, and Carlos Baleba being on the club’s list.

Anderson looks like he’d be the dream addition right now, but Sky suggest Manchester City looks more likely for the Nottingham Forest and England midfielder.

Wharton and Baleba are two other fine young talents, but Fernandes could be the way to go for United if they want to avoid a long-drawn-out saga, with West Ham’s likely relegation surely making it a simpler and more affordable deal to get done.
