Gilmour: ‘Would like more goals, Napoli want to change the narrative’

30 October 2025 at 23:05

Billy Gilmour admits he would ‘like to score more goals’ for Napoli and they are eager to ‘change the narrative’ in the Champions League.

The midfielder had struggled for regular playing time during his first season at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

However, he has stepped up after the injury to Stanislav Lobotka and will now have an even more central role considering Kevin De Bruyne will be out for three to four months following surgery.

Gilmour open to Napoli tactical variations

Those setbacks have prompted Antonio Conte to return to the 4-3-3 formation that won the title last term, so which system does Gilmour prefer?

“It doesn’t change much for us, we know how the coach wants us to play and we train for that,” the Scotland international told Radio CRC.

“We are ready to step onto the field in different formations, we know what we need to do.”

The 24-year-old scored in the 3-2 victory over Pisa last month and it was his first goal in a Napoli jersey.

“I would like to score more goals. It’d be good to add more goals to my game and also help the team to win, that’d be nice,” confessed Gilmour.

“There are lots of games coming up, so it’s important for us to work hard and prepare for every match. We must be at 100 per cent and recover well to ensure we are ready, proving what a good team we really are.”

Napoli are unbeaten at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona so far this season, but are still reeling after the 6-2 Champions League defeat away to PSV Eindhoven.

“The last game in the Champions League was not at all good and we know that we want to change the narrative. We hope to get out there and immediately prove that Napoli are a great team.

“We really are a strong group, I think you could see that from last season too. The new arrivals have settled in well, both on and off the field, and that team spirit helps us during matches,” concluded Gilmour.

Di Canio: Conte will ‘make a decision’ about Serie A and Champions League

30 October 2025 at 17:45

Paolo Di Canio insists Napoli no longer have the same hunger they had last season and hints that Antonio Conte will prioritise Serie A to become the first coach to win two consecutive titles at the Stadio Maradona.

Napoli are the joint-Serie A table leaders alongside Roma. On Tuesday, the defending champions needed a goal from Zambo Anguissa and a penalty-kick save from Vanja Milinkovic-Savic to grab all three points against Lecce.

“If Camarda had scored that penalty, would Napoli have had the strength to win it?” Di Canio asked during Sky Sport Italia’s post-match show on Wednesday.

“They seem to be always struggling. The same against Inter. They broke the deadlock with that penalty.

“After the defeat against Verona last season, you could see a reaction and a determined and angry team,” continued Di Canio.

“I don’t think Conte plays a game when he says that this will be a difficult season. His best placement in the Champions League has been in the quarter-finals. He knows how much energy this competition takes away from the team.

“He’d like to step into this dimension with a new playing style too, four attacking midfielders, but the balance is something different, and because of the energy you have to put there, the risk is to lose something more compared to last season.

“I’m convinced he’ll make a decision depending on how the league goes. I’m not saying he’ll drop the Champions League, but he has pride, and nobody has ever won two consecutive Serie A titles at Napoli.

“I think he can make it because the only other genuine contender I see for now is Inter. Then we’ll see if the others will improve, especially Milan.”
