A split-screen image shows the same elderly woman. On the left, she smiles cheerfully with tidy hair and clean face; on the right, she appears distressed, with messy hair and a dark, dirty face, both in black and white.

Sh! The Octopus may not be remembered as a great film of the 1930s like King Kong or The Awful Truth, in fact it was named as one of the greatest bad movies of all time. But there is one scene, involving some very clever camera work, that continues to get talked about today.

Air India Express is stepping into a new era of travel excellence by redefining what affordable flying means for modern passengers. The airline’s latest transformation reflects India’s artistic identity and hospitality, visible through its newly refreshed Boeing 737-8 interiors, elegant cultural designs, and the return of hot in-flight meals that bring warmth and personality back to the skies. Strengthened by an ambitious network expansion linking more cities across India and abroad, the carrier is not only enhancing connectivity but also showcasing a perfect blend of comfort, culture, and contemporary service that marks a proud evolution for Indian aviation.

Air India Express has rapidly evolved over the past two years under the ambitious Vihaan.ai transformation plan. The results are no longer confined to company blueprints—they’re visible inside the cabins themselves. This winter, the airline has taken a major leap forward with the debut of its revamped Boeing 737-8 aircraft at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. Registered as VT-BWD, the jet reflects more than just a fleet renewal—it embodies the airline’s new philosophy: modern, comfortable, and deeply connected to its Indian roots.

The aircraft proudly displays Air India Express’s signature cultural expression. The tail design features the Tsüngkotepsü motif, inspired by the warrior shawl of the Ao Naga tribe from Nagaland. Once a mark of bravery and honour, the design now travels across international skies as a living tribute to India’s artistic heritage. The moment passengers step on board, they encounter a blend of Indian creativity and modern aesthetics—a reflection of the airline’s mission to celebrate culture through design.

Inside the cabin, Air India Express has transformed the travel experience with a strong focus on comfort and efficiency. The airline has installed premium leatherette seats with softer padding and ergonomic armrests, offering travellers greater relaxation during long or short journeys. Passengers can now use in-seat USB-C charging ports, enjoy mood lighting inspired by Boeing’s Sky Interior, and walk on refreshed carpeting that gives a homely yet sophisticated vibe. With 189 seats, the aircraft maintains its operational efficiency while enhancing comfort, especially in exit rows that now feature 38 inches of legroom.

The return of hot meals has become one of the biggest highlights of this transformation. Air India Express has reintroduced its onboard ovens, reviving the popular ‘Gourmair’ hot meal service on domestic and regional routes. Travellers can now savour freshly prepared dishes such as Awadhi biryani, kebab platters, paneer makhani, omelettes, and fresh salads. To make journeys more personal, the airline now lets passengers pre-book “celebration cakes” for special occasions, adding a warm touch to the inflight experience.

The airline has also modernised its snack and wellness offerings. Lighter options such as quinoa bowls, barley salads, and vegetable wraps cater to health-conscious passengers who want balanced meals without compromising on taste. The refreshed menu sends a clear message—comfort and affordability can go hand in hand without cutting corners on quality or choice.

Beyond the cabin upgrades, Air India Express has expanded its flight network significantly this winter. The airline has increased operations by over 25 percent compared to the previous season, now running more than 2,700 domestic and 780 international flights each week. This expansion introduces 48 new domestic routes and 10 new international connections, many of which link Tier-II cities with major hubs. The move reflects a strong effort to strengthen regional connectivity while supporting India’s growing aviation demand.

Bengaluru and Navi Mumbai have become strategic hubs in this new phase of growth. From Bengaluru, travellers can now fly directly to Bangkok, Jeddah, Kuwait, and Riyadh, while domestic departures from the city have increased from 63 to 77 per week. Delhi has also seen a major boost in operations, with flights rising from 42 to 60 weekly departures. These route expansions underline Air India Express’s commitment to offering broader access and better travel options for passengers across India and beyond.

The airline’s hub-based strategy now drives nearly 74 percent of its domestic operations from Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. This model improves travel flow, reduces layovers, and enhances connection timings—factors that business and leisure travellers value the most. With tighter scheduling and more frequent services, Air India Express is ensuring smoother, faster, and more reliable journeys.

Every change within Air India Express reflects a clear vision: to create an airline that blends efficiency with emotional connection. By investing in thoughtful design, improved in-flight experiences, and a stronger network, the carrier is redefining its position in the low-cost segment. It aims to deliver not just affordable fares but meaningful comfort that travellers can feel from takeoff to touchdown.

Air India Express is ushering in a new era of travel excellence by combining India’s artistic heritage with modern comfort through its redesigned Boeing 737-8 interiors, reintroduced hot meals, and a rapidly expanding route network that strengthens connectivity across cities and regions.

As Air India Express steps into the winter of 2025 with its modernised aircraft, refreshed menu, and expanded network, it stands as a symbol of how a budget airline can evolve without losing its heart. The transformation speaks volumes about an airline that understands its passengers—not as numbers in a seat map, but as guests who deserve warmth, attention, and an authentic Indian experience at 35,000 feet.
