The Red Devils sacked Ruben Amorim back in January and soon afterwards appointed Carrick as interim manager until the end of the season.

Despite not being the biggest name or most experienced option, Carrick has done a superb job of steadying the ship, winning nine of his 13 games in charge to take the team to the brink of Champions League qualification.

Writing in his column in the Telegraph, Carragher made it clear that he’s now backing Carrick as the best choice to be permanent Man Utd manager, despite having previously argued for Aston Villa boss Unai Emery.

“Carrick is the ideal choice to assume full control this summer because of what the club needs right here, right now. It makes sense in the short term with an eye on the long term,” Carragher wrote.

“Over the past four months, Carrick has bought himself and the United board a valuable commodity that is generally elusive in football: time. He has restored a sense of normality – an underestimated quality at any club, let alone one of the biggest.”

He added: “Arguments can rage about whether Carrick deserved the chance to be given the job temporarily, or even whether he deserves it full-time based on his previous work, but he has created an environment where players enjoy their training – and match days – and have a good relationship with the manager and his staff.

“Why would you rush to change it just because the person currently in charge is not a big-name manager? Especially given the current state of the managerial market.

“Ever since Ruben Amorim’s sacking, there has been a predictable urge to list every prominent coach deemed attractive enough to take over. The problem is we are in an era where there are fewer box-office managers.

“Of those being referenced the most, such as Paris St-Germain’s Luis Enrique, they are otherwise engaged trying to win the Champions League or, in the case of Julian Nagelsmann and Carlo Ancelotti, preoccupied with the World Cup.

Chelsea reportedly look to have been handed a boost in their transfer pursuit of FC Koln forward Said El Mala, according to Christian Falk.

Writing in the latest edition of his CF Bayern Insider column, Falk explained that it looks like El Mala is going to be too expensive for Brighton.

The Seagulls had also been keen on signing the talented 19-year-old, but Chelsea might now be in a stronger position, as long as they’re prepared to meet Koln’s €50m asking price.

Chelsea have invested a lot in top young players in recent times, and El Mala looks like he fits into that category after 11 goals and four assists in the Bundesliga this season.

Falk has previously reported on both Chelsea and Brighton being interested in El Mala, and now he has a new update in this week’s column.

“Said El Mala’s potential move to the Premier League this summer is not off! There’s another club the FC Köln star is interested in, and this is Chelsea,” Falk said.

“This is now the club that has their eye on El Mala. Cologne demand €50m [£43.1m]. Brighton would have been prepared to pay €35m, which was not enough for FC Köln. Of course, for El Mala, the move would have been nice; he’s earning about €1.5m at Cologne and Brighton offered €4m.

“But now, there’s a question: Is there a club out there prepared to pay €50m? The hope is that’s Chelsea. They are interested in the player, but if they’ll pay so much for a German talent remains to be seen – we don’t yet know!

“In the meantime, FC Köln would be happy to keep the 19-year-old winger. They’re working right now on a new deal with a supermarket chain that could supply the rest of the salary that El Mala would like to earn (€4m). That’s the Plan B if he isn’t sold. At the moment, it’s up to Chelsea and Said El Mala.”

It’s important to start this by saying that I’ve spoken to numerous sources in the last few days and the clear message is that Van de Ven is not deciding anything now and not holding talks with any clubs at the moment, with his full focus being on helping Tottenham stay up.

Meanwhile, Spurs sources point towards the Netherlands international’s contract until 2029, with no desire to let an important player go, and no pressure to do so as there’s no release clause in his current deal.

Liverpool and Manchester United interested in Micky van de Ven

Still, it is my understanding that Van de Ven could discuss his future with the Tottenham hierarchy at the end of the season. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to work out that things haven’t really gone to plan for the 25-year-old during his time in north London.

“Van de Ven will meet with Tottenham at the end of the season, whether they stay up or not,” one source said. “For now his full focus is on keeping them in the Premier League, but he’ll be aware that clubs like Liverpool and Manchester United are interested, and that could put pressure on Tottenham.”

Both the Reds and the Red Devils are exploring the market for central defenders this summer, and Van de Ven is understood to feature on their lists after his strong form during his time in England, combined with the fact that he might be available if THFC get relegated.

Even if Spurs stay up, it could be tricky for them to persuade the player to stay, though some sources are also insisting he won’t come cheap. Depending on who you talk to, it could cost anywhere between £60-80m to prise Van de Ven out of Tottenham this summer, while his wage demands are also high – possibly as much as £200,000 per week.

Who else could be in the race for Micky van de Ven?

Finally, I’d also keep an eye on Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

Los Blancos are making a centre-back a top priority this summer and, like Liverpool, have known about Van de Ven since his Wolfsburg days.

“At the moment, it seems there are no problems between Anthony Gordon and Bayern Munich when it comes to trying to find a solution. There are some numbers in the air, but these haven’t been concretely negotiated.”

He added: “That said, there could be a problem with the transfer fee Newcastle are looking for – especially if the Premier League club commits to a price tag of £80m [€92.6m]. At that point, it’s getting really, really difficult. The supervisory board at Bayern Munich would say they were thinking in the region of £60m [€69.4m]. I think this wouldn’t be a problem. But £80m would be too much.”

Where will Anthony Gordon end up?

At the moment, it seems like Bayern’s interest is the most advanced, but the price could also be an issue for the Bundesliga giants.

It could be that Gordon’s fee would be more affordable for English clubs, but then Newcastle will also surely look to avoid losing the 25-year-old to a Premier League rival.

In truth, the easy choice for Bouaddi would probably be PSG, as he could stay in France whilst also giving himself the chance to play at a higher level by moving to a club regularly winning titles and competing for the Champions League.

Bouaddi would probably not need to adapt quite as much as he would if he were moving to a new league and different country, but perhaps Lille will have some say here as they’d surely rather not lose the talented Frenchman to a rival.

Another played down talk of Carrick being the favourite, insisting that “the availability of someone like Iraola changes everything. They don’t want another Solskjaer.”

Overall it’s a slightly mixed message, and the complicated factor for United here is that Chelsea have a head-start on them. The Blues need to start their manager search now, and have been sounding out numerous candidates, though Iraola is ahead of names like Xabi Alonso, Oliver Glasner, and Francesco Farioli on their list.

This could mean by the time United have decided, Iraola will already have something advanced with Chelsea. That’s not the case at the moment, however, with sources indicating he’s in no hurry to accept an offer now. This gives the Red Devils time, and likely a chance to speak with him after the end of the season.

Champions League football

It looks like United are heading for Champions League qualification, whereas Chelsea could miss out after their recent slump in form.

It is our understanding, however, that this will not be seen as crucial for Iraola. We’ll have to see how this develops, however, as it certainly does no harm to be able to offer experience in Europe’s top club competition, and all the benefits in the transfer market that are also likely to come with that.

Iraola’s current fine work at Bournemouth looks set to see them qualify for Europe, so it would be a bit of a step down for him if he were to take over at Stamford Bridge when they might even end this season below Iraola’s side in the table.

Describing Man Utd as “my club” in an emotional announcement video, Mainoo explained how important it is for him to keep on representing the Red Devils after coming up through their academy.

Arsenal are reportedly ready to consider selling Myles Lewis-Skelly for around £43m this summer, with Atletico Madrid interested.

The Gunners and Atletico are currently focusing on their Champions League semi-final, with last night’s first leg finishing 1-1 in Madrid.

Still, it could also be that these two big teams will soon meet to discuss business off the pitch, with Lewis-Skelly’s future in some doubt.

Arsenal forward Gabriel Martinelli insists he is confident that the club will reach the Champions League final after last night’s 1-1 draw away to Atletico Madrid.

The Brazil international started in Madrid as the Gunners claimed an important result away from home in the first leg of this semi-final tie.

Arsenal take on Fulham in the Premier League at the weekend and then host Atletico at the Emirates Stadium for the second leg of this semi-final next week.

If Arsenal go through, it will be only their second ever appearance in a Champions League final, but Martinelli sounds optimistic about the team’s chances after getting through what should, at least on paper, be the tougher part of the tie.

Speaking in the mixed zone after the game, Martinelli seemed in a positive mood about the return fixture, particularly if Mikel Arteta is able to welcome back a fully fit Eberechi Eze and Bukayo Saka, both of whom could only start on the bench in Madrid.

“We have so many good players, the depth in this squad is really good,” Martinelli told reports. “I think if everybody is ready it’s a big boost for us, so let’s hope everyone is ok.”

He added: “We wanted to come here and win the game. But in the end it’s a battle against a really good team at their place. We take the draw. We’re going to re-watch the game and see the things that we did wrong and try to improve for the next one.”

When asked if he’s confident Arsenal will make it into the final, Martinelli responded: “Yeah of course. We play for Arsenal, we know how big the club is and we trust in ourselves.”

It will be interesting to see how this develops, but clearly nothing is decided yet and Diomande may prefer to wait before jumping into a big move like Arsenal or Liverpool.

According to Sportinjo, Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund have both shown an interest in Kostov, with the Gunners now reported as leading the race for his signature.

A source in their story suggests Arsenal are ready to pay €12m to sign Kostov, with an agreement close on a deal that could end up reaching a total package worth €20m.

While it probably wouldn’t be ideal for Liverpool to lose an influential figure and to be forced to look for a replacement, there’s perhaps an argument that the Reds could do better.
