While the world’s top national teams are currently focused on preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, other upcoming commitments are starting to emerge on the horizon. One of those is the 2026-27 UEFA Nations League, where Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal will aim to defend the title they won last year.

The European tournament will begin in September, during the first FIFA international break following the World Cup in North America. On Thursday, the draw was held to determine the groups for each of the four divisions.

Portugal were arguably the biggest beneficiaries of the draw, avoiding some of the toughest possible opponents. Spain, France, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, England, and Croatia all rank among the top 13 in the FIFA Rankings, making them formidable rivals.

Instead, Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates were placed in Group A4, the only group without any of those top-ranked teams. Portugal will face Denmark (21st in FIFA rankings), Norway (32nd), and Wales (35th) as they compete for a spot in the quarterfinals.

How does the UEFA Nations League 2026-27 work?

All UEFA member nations participate in the Nations League. Teams are divided into four divisions based on competitive level and recent results, with promotion and relegation systems similar to club leagues.

In the top division, the most competitive teams are placed into four groups of four. In the first round, each team plays home-and-away matches against the others in their group. After six games, the top two teams from each group advance to the quarterfinals. The tournament is scheduled to conclude in the summer of 2027.

In a recent interview with Sports Digitale, Arda Guler’s former coach, Serhat Pekmezci, stated that the Turkish player was having problems in the Real Madrid dressing room. “Arda Guler is being subjected to mobbing… The harassment came from the players; there is a group there that has not been able to accept Arda; unfortunately, they are players with very high egos.” In light of these statements, the 20-year-old decided to deny the information.

Born in the South London borough of Lambeth, Opoku was raised in England by Ghanaian immigrants and rose through the ranks at Fulham’s academy before eventually cutting his teeth in League One for Accrington Stanley and Plymouth Argyle. He then made the move to Danish outfit Vejle Boldklub, where he established himself as one of the top central defenders in the Danish SuperLiga. After three straight loan spells, Opoku decided to call it quits on his Fulham adventure after 13 years, making the move to Portuguese outfit Arouca. Opoku established a rock-solid partnership in central defense alongside João Basso, forming the bedrock of a team that took the entire league by surprise.

Having narrowly avoided relegation in their return to the top flight in 2021/22, Arouca would ascend to the upper reaches of the table and qualify for European football for the second time ever after finishing fifth. These stellar displays would attract the attention of Süper Lig side İstanbul Başakşehir, and after a long-winded transfer saga, Opoku signed a one-year contract extension until 2026 with Arouca before joining Başakşehir on loan (later made permanent for a reported €1.5 million).

Opoku quickly made his presence felt, playing 32 times in all competitions to lead the Owls to a fourth-place finish and a trip to the Turkish Cup quarterfinals, before scoring three goals and four assists in 33 league appearances as Başakşehir placed fifth in the 2024/25 Süper Lig table. And whilst he was linked with a return to England in the summer, Opoku opted to stay put at Başakşehir, where he is contracted through 2027. Although he isn’t closing the door on a homecoming, he is more than happy in Istanbul, where he is raising his 10-month-old son, Rome, and his two-year-old son, Cruz, with his wife.

“As I always say, it’s God’s plan, so I think that if I just keep putting in the performances, whatever comes will kind of reflect on where I could be, or where I should be. For now, I’m here in Istanbul, and that’s what I’m focused on, but whatever happens is really God’s plan, so I’ve got to keep working hard and see what comes,” stated Opoku in an exclusive World Soccer Talk interview.

It hasn’t been a conventional journey for Opoku, who started off idolizing Gareth Bale and dreamed of becoming a winger, only to be moved to left back by his U-15 coach Mark Pembridge. And after enjoying a growth spurt, he shifted to the center back role, where he has remained ever since. When he was 17, Opoku abandoned his academic studies in order to focus on becoming a professional footballer—just a few weeks later, Opoku suffered a season-ending ACL injury. And yet, it’s obvious that this adversity has paid off in the long term for Opoku, who has earned praise from the likes of Gabriele Marcotti and established himself as one of the very best defenders in Türkiye. He currently ranks second in their squad for 1.2 interceptions per 90 and 50.7 accurate passes (89% success rate) per 90 in league play, as well as third for 4.1 clearances per 90.

“I’ve really developed my all-around game since going to Başakşehir, in general terms of just being a defender. Being a defender first, making sure you can achieve the clean sheet, that’s the main focus when growing up, but a few years ago, I started to focus on a few more different things. Where I am now is just about not letting the striker score and coming back with that clean sheet; that’s where I get my main joy from now. Back then, maybe I’d be thinking, ‘Let me get a goal, let me take this guy on,’ but it’s not really the fundamentals of being a defender. The past couple of years have just been about keeping the clean sheet… that’s my main focus. If that goal goes in, then it hurts, so it’s just about keeping the goals down to a minimum and having a clean performance.”

Opoku hasn’t just made his mark at the club level, but the international level. One month after moving to Istanbul, Opoku received his maiden call-up for the Ghanaian national team, making his debut in a 4-0 defeat vs. the United States in Nashville, before missing out on the next two windows. He returned in March 2024, playing in two friendlies vs. Nigeria and Uganda before returning a year later to make his competitive debut vs. Chad in World Cup qualifying. He then started in a 3-0 win vs. Madagascar, missing out on the next two friendlies, before returning in September 2025 and playing the full 90 in a 1-0 win vs. Mali. He then made two late cameos vs. Mali and the Central African Republic, before watching from the bench as Ghana defeated Comoros and secured their spot in the 2026 World Cup. Opoku then headed to the Far East for the November friendlies, starting in a 2-0 defeat to Japan before riding the bench vs. South Korea.

“Growing up in South London, I had a lot of Ghanaian friends and Ghanaian neighbors at school; it was kind of like a community in itself. Of course, when you go to weddings and parties, you see a lot of Ghanaian family members, so it never leaves you. Now being able to go to the actual country frequently is amazing, because now I’m seeing more family members, making new friends and new relationships, and learning more about the culture. It’s amazing, it’s all good.”

At 27 years of age, Jerome Opoku has already established himself in England, Denmark, Portugal, and Türkiye. But now, can he leave his mark in his first-ever international tournament in North America and lead Ghana to the knockout round for the first time since 2010? For that reason, Jules is reportedly not willing to leave the club.

The Blaugranas are indeed targeting a reshuffle in their defensive line, as Iñigo Martínez’s departure has exposed inconsistencies within the team. Although Koundé’s exit could pave the way for that change, both Barcelona and the player remain reluctant about such a possibility. In light of this, the futures of Ronald Araújo and Andreas Christensen remain uncertain, as the club is reportedly pursuing a world-class left-profile center-back.

Barcelona have no reliable backup plan for Jules Kounde

Due to Jules Koundé’s dominant performances at right-back, the Frenchman was no longer considered an option at center-back. As a result, Barcelona chose not to pursue a reliable backup for him, leading to a heavy workload and significant minutes on his legs. However, the 27-year-old star has seen a dip in form, and many believe it is linked to the high volume of minutes he has played. Yet, they have still not managed to secure a dependable replacement.

Both Eric Garcia and Ronald Araujo have played as right-backs, but neither of them has been able to provide guarantees replacing Kounde. In view of this, the arrival of Joao Cancelo on loan midway through the season has been a lifesaver, as he has been able to give the Frenchman a rest. Despite this, the Portuguese player is unlikely to stay long term, as he is under contract with Al Hilal and Barcelona are reportedly unwilling to pay for his transfer.

Fabio Capello insists the Serie A title race is far from over, warning that Inter and Juventus cannot afford to ignore the growing threat of Milan and Roma.

Speaking in his latest column with La Gazzetta dello Sport, the former coach reacted to Antonio Conte’s downbeat comments following Napoli’s recent penalty shoot-out defeat to Como.

Conte had played down his side’s Scudetto chances, pointing to a nine-point gap behind Inter and describing Napoli’s situation as problematic.

Capello, however, believes it is too early to write anyone off.

“The Italian championship is not closed,” he said. “I heard Conte’s words after the defeat and I think they were influenced by the result. There are still many games to play, with plenty of direct clashes. Calm down.”

Capello: ‘More than just Inter in Serie A title race’

While acknowledging that Inter are playing well, Capello stressed that the season still has twists to come.

He also highlighted Milan’s steady improvement under Massimiliano Allegri and suggested Roma could yet enter the conversation if they have finally solved their centre-forward issue.

“There is still a lot to do before we can declare the title race over,” Capello concluded.

Inter currently have an eight point lead at the summit of Serie A, with Milan having a game in hand in second.

Napoli are nine points behind Inter, whilst an improving Juventus have closed the gap between themselves and Conte’s side to just three points.

Roma are tied on points with Juventus and it feels highly probably that one of these five sides will lift the Scudetto in May.

According to the latest information from transfermarkt.it, Vlahovic is currently the seventh-highest paid player across Europe’s top five leagues in terms of gross salary.

Juventus currently pay the Serbian €22.2m per year in gross salary. It is widely believed that the 26-year-old takes home a net salary of around €12m per year after tax and deductions. This equates to a weekly take home of just over €230,000 per week (net).

Only six players in Europe are currently paid higher than Vlahovic is in the final year of his Juventus contract. They are Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe, Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane, Real Madrdi’s Vinicius Jr., Liverpool’s Mohames Salah and Real Madrid’s David Alaba.

Senior Giallorossi advisor Claudio Ranieri has recently confirmed that there have been talks: “I know the Friedkins are thinking about it, I hope Francesco can truly be useful to Roma as well, because he really is part of Roma,” he said. 

Totti is Roma’s all-time leading appearance maker with 785 outings across all competitions, and is also the club’s all-time leading goalscorer with 307. 

Totti spent 25 years in Roma’s first team and had initially moved into a backroom role after hanging up his boots in 2017. He would later resign in 2019 citing disagreements with former co-owner and chair James Pallotta. Totti claimed that he was regularly left out of the club’s decision making. 

Totti insisted that he would only return to Roma under a different ownership, which is now the case with the Fridkins at the helm. 

Totti was recently seen at the Stadio Olimpico for the first time in several years, and it has been reported that this was at the invitation of Ryan Friedkin.

After missing the entire week of training, Raphinha has been ruled out of Hansi Flick’s roster due to a specific muscle overload that prevents him from running and changing direction, according to Víctor Navarro. To avoid a relapse of the thigh issue that has affected him throughout the season, Barcelona have decided to leave him out of the match against Atlético Madrid, aiming to have him at his best for the final stretch of the campaign.

Alongside the Brazilian’s absence, the Blaugranas also announced that Marcus Rashford will miss out after skipping the team’s latest training session. Following the game against RCD Mallorca, the Englishman has experienced pain in his left knee. While it is not considered a serious injury, the 28-year-old striker was left out of the squad as a precaution, as Hansi Flick did not believe he was fit to compete.

Despite these significant absences, Barcelona remain the favorite to clinch a spot in the Copa del Rey final. With strong squad depth, Hansi Flick can turn to Ferran Torres on the left wing, as he is also in excellent scoring form. In addition, Atlético Madrid are not in top shape, having won just two of their last six matches. Additionally, coach Diego Simeone will be without Johnny Cardoso and Pablo Barrios.

Spalletti will not address the media before the Inter vs. Juventus match in San Siro, and will instead send captain Manuel Locatelli to give the pre-match assessment at around 14.00 GMT (15.00 CET) on Friday afternoon. 

According to TMW, this is because Spalletti will have to give a mandatory pre-match press conference on Monday ahead of Juve’s Champions League play-off round tie against Galatasaray anyway. 

To ‘avoid’ having the head coach speaking to the media twice within three days, Juventus have decided to send one of their senior players to do the Serie A press conference instead. 

Thursday’s reports claim that this practice is likely to continue until the end of the season. TMW expects that the Old Lady will send a different player to speak to the media before Juventus’s following Serie A match against Como on February 21.

Juventus reportedly have a price tag in mind when it comes to a potential sale of centre-back Federico Gatti, who has attracted interest from Milan, Napoli and some clubs in the Premier League so far this season. 

Both Milan and Napoli have expressed an interest in signing Gatti from Juventus this season. The Partenopei reportedly made an enquiry over the summer, while the Rossoneri sounded out the situation during the January transfer window. 

According to Thursday’s reports from Calciomercato.com, there was even a phone call between Massimiliano Allegri and Gatti, who have worked together previously in Turin, to discuss the situation. 

How much do Juventus want for Gatti?

However, the Rossoneri management were not unanimous over a decision to sign Gatti, and so the situation was left alone in the final days of the January window. 

For now, Gatti is focused on working his way back into Luciano Spalletti’s starting XI, and will also be aiming for a spot in the Italy national team squad for the upcoming World Cup play-offs in March. Should Italy qualify, Gatti will also want to push for a spot in the final World Cup squad. 

For now, a move away from Juventus is impossible until the summer transfer window, but Thursday’s reports claim that it would take an offer in the region of €25m to convince Juventus into selling. 

Juventus paid a fee of €7.5m plus uo to €2.5m in bonuses to sign Gatti from Frosinone in 2022. 

Robert Lewandowski is reportedly yet to decide on his Barcelona future as he also looks set to have plenty of transfer offers from elsewhere.

The Poland international is coming towards the end of his Barca contract, and it’s not yet clear if this will end up being his final campaign at the Nou Camp.

It seems Lewandowski is waiting to see the outcome of the Barcelona presidential election before deciding on a potential new contract with the club, according to Mundo Deportivo.

Meanwhile, the report also states that clubs like AC Milan, Atletico Madrid, and Fenerbahce are showing an interest in Lewandowski, along with clubs in the Saudi Pro League and MLS.

Robert Lewandowski could still stay in Europe

Despite turning 38 later this year, it doesn’t look like Lewandowski is done at the highest level just yet as he continues to shine for Barcelona.

The former Bayern Munich front-man has 13 goals in 28 games so far this season, taking his total to 114 goals in 175 appearances since joining the Catalan giants.

If Barcelona do decide to keep Lewandowski, it’s hard to imagine him staying for longer than a year, but it might be that he also still has the chance to play elsewhere in Europe.

It would be interesting to see him at an historic club like Milan, as he could surely follow in the footsteps of the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Luka Modric, who also managed to shine at the San Siro even in their late 30s and early 40s.

This is not the first time we’ve seen Man Utd linked with Kalulu, with a report from Calciomercato also suggesting other Premier League clubs such as Tottenham and Aston Villa.

This could make it tricky for United to win the race for Kalulu’s signature, but they’re currently performing well on the pitch, which would surely do their chances no harm.

MUFC now look in a good position to finish in the top four and qualify for next season’s Champions League, whereas Villa’s form has taken a bit of a dip, which could yet see them drop out of the running.

Massimiliano Allegri has shared his thoughts ahead of Milan’s upcoming Serie A clash against Pisa and has given an update on the fitness status of some of his key players, including Rafael Leao, Christian Pulisic, Alexis Saelemaekers and Santiago Gimenez. 

The Rossoneri are currently on 50 points after 23 matches of the 2025-26 Serie A season. They sit in second place in the table, eight points shy but with a game in hand over the league leaders, Inter. Allegri’s side are unbeaten across their last 22 league matches. 

The Rossoneri are also fresh off an encouraging 3-0 victory away against Bologna last time out in Serie A, which came in the absence of Pulisic and Saelemaekers, out of the squad through injury, and Leo, who remained an unused substitute. 

Allegri on Pisa vs. Milan, Leao, Pulisic and refereeing controversy

“At the moment, Pisa are fighting to stay in Serie A, they’re a physical team and create a lot at home. They’ve lost, but have kept games alive, we will have to be very careful and have to be ready for everything,” Allegri said at the beginning of his pre-match press conference on Thursday.  

“Tomorrow’s is one of four games that will lead us into the derby, it will be very important all round. We only got two points against Pisa, Cremonese and Parma during the first half of the season.” 

Allegri went on to give injury and fitness updates on some of his key Rossoneri players, beginning with Christian Pulisic, who is only expected to be available off the substitutes bench this weekend. 

“Pulisic will be available. He trained with the team for the first time yesterday but he only has 15-20 minutes in his legs. Leao is doing much better, Gimenez even better still. He will be available in around a month. 

“Saelemaekers is still out, but he’s also doing much better, we’ll see if he’s available for Como.” 

Allegri was also asked whether Rafael Leao could potentially return to the starting line-up against Pisa. He replied: “I have to see in the final training session today and will then decide on the formation, because we also have three close games afterwards. The most important match is still tomorrow’s, though.” 

And on Christopher Nkunuku, who has responded to a slow start in Serie A with five goals in his last six league outings, Allegri said: “I wouldn’t talk about a ‘rebirth’, but about adaptation. He’s a sensitive guy with extraordinary technique. I jokingly told him once: ‘Things go better when you laugh a little more’. Fortunately, he’s doing well. 

“I’m also happy for Loftus-Cheek and Fofana. Being able to rely on all the players is important at the moment, those who start from the first minute and those who take over. Together, we have a clear goal to achieve, to get to the Champions League.” 

Allegri has said in practically every one of his pre-match press conferences this season that the team’s goal is to earn Champions League qualification. He was asked once again on Thursday whether he has any thoughts about a potential Scudetto fight with Inter. 

“Today, we’re in a good position in the table, but it’s not enough,” he replied. “You don’t even get to the Conference League with 50 points. The closer we get to the Champions League mark, the better we’ll be doing in the standings. That’s why these games before the derby are so important.” 

And on Milan’s season so far, Allegri said: “We’ve had a good season so far. We started by trying to get back into the Champions League, and at the moment we’re in the top four. That’s the goal. 

“We could have done better in the Coppa Italia, which is our big regret. We have to stay focussed on our goal, aware that Inter, as we’ve known from the beginning, are a very strong team. Napoli are also strong, Juve are coming back up. It won’t be easy to finish in the top four.”

And on the recent refereeing controversies in Serie A, Allegri added: “There were discussions about referees 50 years ago as well. Now we have VAR, which helps a lot. It’s an important tool, they’re working to improve it further. 

“The most important thing about VAR is objectivity. They have to improve that 100% where possible. Everything else is subjective and so there will always be controversy. If you get something given in your favour, you shut up. If something goes against you, you get wound up. It can only improve with objectivity, not subjectivity.”

Journalist Federica Zille has come to the defence of Bianconeri head coach Luciano Spalletti, who kissed her live on TV while trying to make his point during a post-match interview after Juventus’s recent 2-2 draw against Lazio in Serie A. 

Why did Spalletti kiss a reporter after Juventus 2-2 Lazio? 

During the 2-2 draw between Juventus and Lazio, Teun Koopmeiners saw his opening goal ruled out by VAR due to Khephren Thuram standing in an offside position. There was also, however, an apparent foul on Juve’s Juan Cabal by Biancocelesti defender Mario Gila in the build-up, which refereeing analyst Luca Marelli argued should have been a penalty. 

This led Spalletti to debate the technicalities of contact in the penalty area during his post-match interview after full-time. 

“The referee can interpret it the way he wants, because the defender is imprudent when going into that sliding tackle, so he takes a risk. I am not here to say if it is a penalty or not. He could’ve run back onto the ball, but I would take a wider view,” Spalletti said.

“Everyone now goes to protest about the rules, but there is always an interpretation. The pressure of a step on foot, handball that nobody sees in the stadium but they zoom in with the camera, it is all open to interpretation. You cannot generalise that every contact is a penalty.”

Spalletti then turned back to an incident in a previous game against Atalanta when a penalty was awarded for handball that even Ederson, who had made the cross, hadn’t noticed.

“I never talked about referees when decisions went against me or in favour. In the game against Atalanta the VAR called the referee to view the handball a minute and a half later, when nobody including Raffaele Palladino who was right next to me on the touchline, had any idea what this was even for.

“The rules are too rigid right now, it is the rigidity that I find to be the problem. If nobody even realises it hit a hand, who is damaged by that? The analysts keep saying ‘there was contact,’ but that doesn’t mean anything, does it? May I kiss you, here, this is contact,” said Spalletti when giving the female interviewer, Zille, a peck on the cheek.

“It’s about context, contact is not the same thing as impact. There will always be difficulty if there are rules where every touch of the hand is a penalty, every step on foot is a penalty. This is what VAR is for, you can evaluate the context in its totality.

“If we stick to the rules, then that is definitely a penalty, because Gila goes into a sliding tackle and takes responsibility for that gesture when he doesn’t get the ball.”

Zille defends Spalletti after TV kiss: ‘Exaggerated’

Zille, who was on duty with DAZN for the Juventus-Lazio match, has since come out to defend Spalletti, following some accusations of improper behaviour during his post-match interview. 

Speaking to FantacalcioTV (via corriere.it), Zille said: “There was no kind of malice in Spalletti’s gesture. He wanted to exemplify what he was saying, that there is a difference between contact and impact. 

“I know Spalletti. Many say ‘he wouldn’t have done that had it been a man’. No, he probably would have touched or nudged a man to say that it was just contact and not a foul.

“I wouldn’t like for people to talk about malice or a lack of respect in this situation, for me as a woman, as a journalist or as a professional. 

“I’ve read comments which have mentioned the word ‘harassment’. I’ve found that to be really exaggerated, perhaps even incorrect because harassment is a serious topic. And as a woman, I feel strongly about this issue, but that’s all the more reason to have clarity of mind and give the right balance to this sort of thing.” 

According to Football Insider, former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is interested in becoming the manager of the Premier League club again.

Spurs have struggled to find the right manager

Since his departure from Spurs, managers like Antonio Conte, Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo, Ange Postecoglou and Frank have all been given charge of the team but they have failed to make the desired impact.

Frank’s tenure has left the club flirting with the relegation zone, and the board is likely looking for a figure who can unite a fractured fanbase instantly.

Pochettino can do that. He can unite the club on and off the pitch but it all depends on what Tottenham want.

They would have to wait till the summer to appoint Pochettino, when in reality, they need someone now who can move them further away from the relegation zone in the Premier League standings.

Ange Postecoglou aimed a brutal dig at his former club Tottenham when speaking on an episode of The Overlap today, and he’s not the first to make similar claims about the north London side.

The Australian tactician was sacked by Spurs at the end of last season despite winning the Europa League final and giving them their first trophy in almost 20 years.

Fast forward to just eight months later and Thomas Frank has also been sacked after an unsuccessful stint with Tottenham, who have gone through a really difficult period since Mauricio Pochettino’s reign.

Spurs don’t seem to have too much trouble hiring top managers, with the likes of Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho also among the coaches to take a seat in the club’s dugout in the last few years, but it’s clear that all of these managers keep encountering similar problems with the culture of the club.

Ange Postecoglou: Tottenham are not a big club

Speaking on The Overlap, Postecoglou made it very clear how frustrating he found it at Tottenham, insisting they don’t live by their motto of ‘to dare is to do’ and that they need to learn to take more risks.

“When you look at their expenditure and particularly their wages structure, they’re not a big club,” he said.

“I think they didn’t realise that, to actually win, you’ve got to take some risks.

“I felt like Tottenham as a club were saying, ‘we’re one of the big boys’, and the reality is I don’t think they are.”

Postecoglou’s frustrations sound very similar to what Conte said in an infamous rant shortly before he left the job.

Antonio Conte on Tottenham’s “story” under “this owner”

In an extraordinary outburst in March 2023, Conte vented his frustration at THFC and their lack of success under Daniel Levy.

As quoted by BBC Sport, the Italian tactician said: “Tottenham’s story is this – 20 years there is this owner and they never won something. Why?

“The fault is only for the club, or for every manager that stay here? I have seen the managers that Tottenham had on the bench. You risk to disrupt the figure of the manager and to protect the other situation in every moment.

“Until now I try to hide the situation but not now because, I repeat, I don’t want to see what I have seen today because this is unacceptable and also unacceptable for the fans.

“If they want to continue in this way, they can change the manager, a lot of managers, but the situation cannot change. Believe me.

“Maybe previously in the other games something can change. But here we’re used to it for a long time. The club has the responsibility for the transfer market, every coach that stayed here has the responsibility. And the players? The players? Where are the players?

“In my experience, I can tell you that if you want to be competitive, if you want to fight, you have to improve this aspect. And this aspect, I can tell you, in this moment is really, really low.”

Jose Mourinho had no connection with Tottenham

Although Mourinho didn’t go into as much detail as Postecoglou and Conte, it’s clear he also had major issues with Spurs.

The Portuguese tactician isn’t one to mince his words, but if anything he was actually quite polite when he admitted he had a special connection with all his former clubs – expect Tottenham.

It might have been tempting for the Special One to twist the knife further here, but credit to him for showing a little self restraint on this occasion.

Premier League side AFC Bournemouth have officially announced the signing of Alex Jimenez on a permanent transfer from Milan. 

The Spaniard has spent the 2025-26 season on loan at Bournemouth in a deal that included an option to buy, which eventually became an obligation to buy. Having triggered the obligation to buy, Jimenez has now put pen to paper on a contract that runs until 2031 on the English south coast. 

It is believed that Bournemouth triggered their option to buy clause by starting or playing Jimenez for at least 45 minutes in 50% of their matches this season. 

As things stand after 24 rounds of Premier League fixtures, Jimenez has played for 45 minutes or more in 19 league matches (50% of Bournemouth’s 38 scheduled games). He also played for 49 minutes in Bournemouth’s only FA Cup appearance of the season. Bournemouth were eliminated from the EFL Cup before Jimenez signed in August, and are not involved in any European competition this season. 

Milan already received a fee of €2m for Jimenez’s season-long loan deal to Bournemouth, and the obligation to buy clause was set at €19.5m plus up to €5.5m in bonuses. 

Milan will not be entitled to the entire cut of that fee, though, as Jimenez’s former club, Real Madrid are owed a 50% sell-on fee. 

That means that Milan will see €9.75m from Jimenez’s permanent transfer to Bournemouth, not including bonuses and not including the €2m loan fee they have already received. 

What Bournemouth said after signing Jimenez from Milan 

“AFC Bournemouth can confirm that Alex Jiménez has completed a permanent move to the club, having met the appearance threshold required to activate the transfer clause following an initial loan,” a statement on the club website read. 

“The 20-year-old, who joined the Cherries ahead of the current season, has now featured in more than half of the club’s competitive fixtures, triggering the terms that secure his future until 2031 on the south coast.

“Arriving from AC Milan having come through the prestigious academy at Real Madrid, Jiménez has made a strong impression during his time at the Vitality Stadium, becoming a regular presence and gaining recognition weekly.

“The full-back won the club’s Player of the Month award for December, while also winning Sky Sports’ Man of the Match accolade in the 1-1 draw with Brighton just last month.

“Having made 22 appearances in all competitions, with his maiden Premier League goal coming against Liverpool, Jiménez has made quite the impression in red and black.”

Juventus have picked up seven points from their last three matches in the Italian top flight. The Bianconeri have six wins, two draws and two losses to their name from their last 10 outings in the league. 

With a hotly-anticipated derby fast approaching, debates have started to arise over which players would make it into a combined starting XI made up of Inter and Juventus players. 

Corriere dello Sport writes on Thursday’s front page that only three Juventus players would make it into Inter’s strongest XI: Centre-back Gleison Bremer, midfielder Khephren Thuram and attacker Kenan Yildiz. 

Thursday’s article suggests that Bremer would slot into a back three alongside Inter’s Manuel Akanji and Alessandro Bastoni. Pierre Kalulu, Lloyd Kelly, Federico Gatti, Yann Bisseck, Stefan De Vrij and Francesco Acerbi are the main alternative options. 

Corriere dello Sport claims that Inter wins the battle of the wing-backs, and that both Denzel Dumfries and Federico Dimarco would start over the likes of Andrea Cambiaso, Juan Cabal or Emil Holm. 

There is room for debate in midfield. Corriere dello Sport picked a trio of Nicolo Barella, Hakan Calhanoglu and Khephren Thuram, but left out the likes of Manuel Locatelli, Weston McKennie, Teun Koopmeiners Piotr Zielinski, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Petar Sucic. 

There is also strength in depth in the attacking options: It has been suggested that Lautaro Martinez and Kenan Yildiz are the strongest attackers that Inter and Juventus have to offer, but that means that Marcus Thuram, Pio Esposito, Dusan Vlahovic, Jonathan David and Francisco Conceicao missing out as well.

England manager Thomas Tuchel has spoken out on his plans for the World Cup this summer after announcing that he’s signed a new contract.

The German tactician is delighted to have extended his deal with the England national team, and has explained why he didn’t initially commit to a longer contract when he first took over.

Tuchel says he didn’t want to lose focus on the World Cup, but now feels fully focused and confident in his plans for the tournament, which also enables him to commit his future to beyond that as well.

Speaking to the England football team’s official site, Tuchel said: “The thing that I only signed for 18 months was my wish and I didn’t want to lose the focus towards the World Cup. Now, after more than one year in the job, I can say I will not lose the focus.

“We are very, very clear who we want to nominate, how we want to nominate and how we want to present ourselves in the World Cup. This will now give us clarity that after the World Cup, we will continue, then we will compete in the Nations League.”

“There’s certain players that we … I mean, at the end of my first year when we finished fifth, for me, okay, how do you go from fifth to really challenging? Well, we had to sign Premier League ready players.

“But finishing fifth that year didn’t get us in the Champions League, so we ended up signing Dom Solanke, who was, absolutely I was really keen, I really like him, and three teenagers.

“I was looking at Pedro Neto, and Mbeumo, and Semenyo. Marc Guehi. If we’re going to go from fifth to there, that’s what the other big clubs would do in that moment.”

He added: “You know, when you walk into Tottenham, what you see everywhere is ‘to dare is to do’ – it’s everywhere. And yet their actions are almost the antithesis of that.”

Atalanta booked their spot in the semi-finals thanks to a responding 3-0 victory at home against Juventus last weekend: Gianluca Scamacca, Kamaldeen Sulemana and Mario Pasalic came up with the goals on that occasion. 

Inter also booked their spot in the final four last weekend thanks to a 2-1 victory against Torino in San Siro with a heavily-rotated starting XI. Ange-Yoan Bonny and Andy Diouf’s goals were enough to see off a second-half consolation goal from Sandro Kulenovic. 

Como also required penalties to see off Napoli in their quarter-final earlier this week. Goals from Martin Baturina and Antonio Vergara saw the game end level at 1-1 before a 7-6 victory in favour of Cesc Fabregas’s side in the resulting shoot-out. 

When will the Coppa Italia semi-finals take place? 

The exact times and dates of the Coppa Italia are still to be confirmed. 

The semi-final slots are currently set to take place during the midweek slots between March 3 and March 5, and between April 21 and April 23.

The 2026 Coppa Italia final is currently scheduled for May 13, 2026.

That means that Italy will next be in action against Northern Ireland in a World Cup play-off semi-final in Bergamo on March 26, 2026.

Spurs are looking for a new manager after sacking Thomas Frank after a turbulent spell at the club.
He leaves the north London club struggling at the wrong end of the Premier League table.

Spurs are 16th in the league, just five points above West Ham United, who are currently 18th in the league.

After winning the Europa League few months ago under former manager Ange Postecoglou, the Premier League side are now struggling to keep up pace with the Premier League elite.

The search for a new manager has started and the likes of Roberto De Zerbi and Diego Simeone are being linked with the Tottenham job.

Tottenham have stepped up their managerial search

De Zerbi has left Marseille after mutual consent this week and his name is reportedly at the top of the shortlist of managers at Spurs.

Simeone, who has won two league titles with Atletico Madrid, has reportedly been approached as well.

It remains to be seen if Spurs are interested in appointing a permanent manager straight away or they are looking to wait till the summer.

The update about Iraola would come as a blow to them since he is someone who has been on their radar.

Iraola is set to become a free agent at the end of the season and speculation is expected to increase over his future in the coming months.

As first reported via the Daily Briefing, the Blues are considering the experienced Argentine as a summer target as he’s set to be available on a free transfer.

We know Chelsea pushed really hard to sign Jeremy Jacquet in January, only to be beaten to the Rennes defender’s signature by Liverpool in a deal which will go through in the summer, so naturally they’re hunting for alternatives.

Marcos Senesi attracting Chelsea transfer interest

One name understood to be high up on Chelsea’s list is Bournemouth’s Senesi, who is due to be out of contract at the end of the season.

The 28-year-old is not a typical Chelsea target, with this current ownership so often prioritising investing in young talents for the future, with Jacquet’s profile making him a more obvious fit.

Still, I’ve also previously reported that Chelsea targeting Harry Maguire as the hierarchy recognise a need for a more experienced Thiago Silva-esque character to come into this squad.

While Senesi has certainly not had anything like the kind of career someone like Silva has had, it perhaps still makes sense that there’s a growing openness from the west London club to move for someone like him if an opportunity to do a deal for free arises.

There have not yet been any formal talks or offers made to Senesi, who is fully focused on doing his best for Bournemouth until the end of the season, but all sources I’ve spoken to expect that he won’t be signing a new contract with the Cherries.

As well as Chelsea, Senesi also has admirers from elsewhere in the Premier League, with Crystal Palace mentioned as being particularly keen as they look to fill the void left by Marc Guehi after his move to Manchester City.

“Senesi won’t be short of opportunities to stay in the Premier League,” one source said. “Chelsea are exploring that option, as are Crystal Palace, Everton, and Brighton. Juventus also registered an interest in January and could look at him again.”

It remains to be seen which club will make Senesi the most tempting offer, but his fine form at Bournemouth has clearly impressed a lot of teams, and his departure will be a blow for Andoni Iraola and co.

Chelsea will likely continue to look at top young talents again as well, but it will be interesting to see how much they prioritise a market opportunity like Senesi, and if they also consider other names to blend their youthful squad with at least a few more experienced options as well.

Thomas Tuchel is reportedly expected to sign a contract to keep him on as England manager even after the 2026 World Cup this summer.

The German tactician has done an impressive job with England so far, winning nine and losing just one of his ten games in charge.

Tuchel, a Champions League winner from his time at Chelsea, looks like he’s proving to be the ideal upgrade England needed after Gareth Southgate, and the Times report some positive news for Three Lions supporters.

They state that Tuchel now looks set to agree a new deal to stay on with England until 2028, which could be a blow to Manchester United and other big clubs.

Carrick has done an impressive job in his brief time in charge so far, but MUFC will surely want someone more experienced to come in.

Tuchel could have been ideal after doing such strong work at big clubs like Chelsea, Bayern Munich, and Paris Saint-Germain, as well as with England.

However, it looks like this won’t be possible now, so United will have to look elsewhere if they decide not to keep Carrick on permanently.

The same situation applies to marquee signing Gabriel “Gabigol” Barbosa, who, unlike Neymar, did not participate in Wednesday’s training session and is dealing with muscle soreness. That leaves Santos without two key players after opening the 2026 Brazilian top-flight season with one draw and one loss.

While Neymar has already recovered from arthroscopic surgery on his left knee, skipping matches played on synthetic surfaces has been team policy since last season. Despite his status as one of the most complete strikers in the world, Alvarez’s 2025-26 season has fallen short of expectations. He has featured in 32 games for Atlético Madrid across all competitions but completed the full 90 minutes in only three of them, scoring 11 goals and currently sitting on a 100-day La Liga goal drought.

Unable to reach his full potential under coach Diego Simeone’s system, and with the club no longer seen as a top contender for major trophies (last season was his first without silverware since arriving in Europe), speculation about a possible departure has inevitably grown. One of the clubs most frequently linked with him is FC Barcelona, a team he has admitted he supported as a child when Lionel Messi was still at the club.

In an interview with Mundo Deportivo, Barca captain Ronald Araújo shared his thoughts on Alvarez’s situation and a possible move after the World Cup: “He’s a great player — for me, he’s one of the best forwards in the world. You can see the quality he has. The best players should be at the best club, which is us. That’s obvious. But it’s not up to me to do that job or make that decision.“

Lowest Bologna rating: Jens Odgaard – Did not get much right tonight and struggled to find space in Lazio’s deep midfield line. Was taken off with twenty minutes to go after a quiet evening.

Coach: Vincenzo Italiano 5.5 – Things are not going his way at the moment as the pressure mounts after what can only be described as a dismal run of recent form. He got it all right in the first half but seemed unable to adjust to Lazio’s improved momentum in the second half.

Best Lazio Player: Tijjani Noslin – The Dutchman’s introduction really unsettled Bologna, who were barely able to cope with Pedro. Lowest Lazio rating: Nuno Tavares – Feels a bit harsh for a player who only played ten minutes, scored his penalty in the shoot-out but he did feel like a bull in a china shop after his introduction. Was booked for a reckless challenge and does not feel like the kind of man you want to rely on to hold on to your defensive stability. That being said, Tavares was hardly awful and the most of his teammates were only marginally better.

Coach: Maurizio Sarri 7 – No matter what obstacles get thrown in Sarri’s way, he manages to overcome them. Pedro, who had probably been Lazio’s best player before his injury, gets taken off – Sarri brings Noslin on, tweaks the dynamics in the front line with Maldini and Lazio are back in the game before they know it. Surprisingly flexible performance from a coach known for his rigidity.

Postecoglou was sacked by Tottenham despite ending trophy drought

The moment was heavy with irony. The 60-year-old was sacked by Tottenham in the summer of 2025, despite leading the club to Europa League glory and finally ending their long-standing trophy drought.

His dismissal was justified by the board at the time due to poor league campaign that saw the club finish 17th, 13 points ahead of the relegation zone.
