Google is working on a new feature that lets its AI assistant, Gemini, control apps on Android phones. This feature was first shown at Google I/O 2025 and was known as Project Astra. Now, new information from a test version of the Google app shows that this feature is getting closer to launch.
According to code found in Google app version 17.4.66 beta, Google is working on a feature that could be βscreen automation.β This would allow Gemini to see whatβs on your phone screen and take actions like tapping, scrolling, and selecting buttons. It means Gemini could use your phone for you.
With screen automation, Gemini may be able to do everyday tasks such as ordering food, booking a ride, or shopping online, without you needing to touch your phone.
These actions would happen directly inside other apps, making Gemini more like a helpful assistant that gets things done instead of just answering questions.

However, Google is now careful and warns users to keep an eye on what Gemini does. The company says Gemini can make mistakes, and users will still be responsible for any actions the AI takes on their phone.
Google notes that if activity tracking is turned on, trained reviewers may see screenshots from your device while Gemini is working. Because of this, users are advised not to enter sensitive or payment information while using the feature. It is not yet clear if Gemini will automatically pause during sensitive tasks.
There are also signs that Google is preparing sections like βMy ordersβ or βPurchasesβ inside Gemini. While the feature is still under development, it shows Googleβs push toward AI that can handle tasks for users.
