Rio Ferdinand hits out at “fake comments” about controversial England-Ghana incident

Rio Ferdinand has hit back at comments being attributed to him about Thomas Partey after Djed Spence appeared to snub him in the pre-match handshake this week.

Spence seemed to avoid shaking hands with Partey before England and Ghana played out a 0-0 draw in their World Cup 2026 Group L clash on Tuesday night.

This comes amid Partey being charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault back in 2025, relating to incidents which allegedly took place between 2021 and 2022.

It seems a fake quote doing the rounds had Ferdinand hitting out at Spence for his judgement, as Partey has not yet been found guilty, though the pundit has since posted on X that these comments are fake…

Ferdinand has not commented on the incident any further, it would seem, so it’s not clear if these are in any way an accurate representation of what he thinks.

There is seemingly no record of Ferdinand saying this anywhere apart from social media quotes that do not mention an original source.

Despite the very serious allegations against Partey, he continued to play for Arsenal until leaving the club in summer 2025, and he’s now on the books at La Liga club Villarreal.

What’s the latest on the Thomas Partey case?

Partey is due to have a further trial after previously pleading not guilty to the charges against him, as reported by the BBC.

The report adds that Partey “remains on bail during the legal proceedings, with the condition that he does not contact the alleged victims”.

The Guardian have also reported on how Partey was not allowed into Canada for Ghana’s opening group game, though he did get a VISA to play against England in the US.

Ghana manager Carlos Queiroz has defended selecting the 33-year-old, saying: “Let events run their normal course, let the river flow and one day, when the river meets the ocean, we will find the truth.”

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana is reportedly set to return to Trabzonspor on loan for a second season, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Posting on his official account on X, Romano says Onana’s second loan spell with the Turkish club is now “here we go”, with the final details being sorted before it can officially go through.

“Andre Onana to Trabzonspor, here we go! New loan deal verbally agreed as Onana is not part of #MUFC plan for next season and Trabzon are ready to re-sign him,” Romano said.

He added: “Trabzonspor to pay loan fee to United as details being sorted then done.”

It certainly makes sense for Man Utd to offload Onana again as he looked so poor for so much of his time at Old Trafford, with Senne Lammens now the clear number one for Michael Carrick’s side.

United may well be disappointed not to have been able to sell Onana permanently, but if there’s a loan fee coming in for him, then it’s not such bad business for the Red Devils overall.

Our information a few months back was that Onana was also open to a move to Serie A, but this never materialised into anything concrete.

No future for Andre Onana at Manchester United

As Romano said above, Onana is not in United’s plans, so it’s undoubtedly for the best that he’s moved on again for the season ahead.

It’s very hard to see there being a way back for the Cameroon international as a MUFC player, especially if Lammens continues to perform as well as he has.

Onana can be a quality ‘keeper on his day, as he showed at former club Inter Milan, but it certainly seems like playing for one of the biggest clubs in the Premier League was just too much of a step up for him.

Trabzonspor are seemingly happy with the 30-year-old, though, as they’ve brought him back for a second spell, so this looks like a deal that suits everyone involved.

This has now been confirmed today by Fabrizio Romano, who has posted on X about Madrid informing the Serie A club of their decision, though he also suggests that Paz will be available on the market for around €60m.

Interestingly, Romano makes it clear that Paz will be “on the market again” after returning to Madrid, with Como able to sign him permanently for €60m, while other clubs may face paying even more.

New Nico Paz transfer opportunity for Arsenal and Chelsea?

Interestingly, this latest information differs slightly from what we were told, which was that Paz was being brought back to Madrid to be a key first-team player.

We were told that Arsenal and Chelsea looked into the 21-year-old’s situation but were told he would not be available. It would appear that this has now changed, and is most likely due to the surprise return of Jose Mourinho as manager, which has signalled a clear shift in direction in terms of recruitment.

It’s very clear that Mourinho’s return is part of an overall shift of strategy towards experience, both in the manager that has been brought in and the players he’ll be working under, such as Bernardo Silva, Marc Cucurella, Ibrahima Konate, and Denzel Dumfries.

This means there won’t be room for Paz unless something dramatic happens in the coming weeks, and he’ll be available for the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea to try again for his signature.

Clearly the young South American won’t come cheap, but he’s very highly regarded, so surely won’t be short of suitors willing to put big money on the table.

Leeds United appear to be wasting no time in the summer transfer window, with their move for Harry Wilson looking like just the beginning of a bigger recruitment push.

Leeds are also looking at Southampton midfielder Shea Charles.

Leeds are moving in the right way. Wilson is a clever free transfer, Brandt would bring genuine class, and Charles would add long-term value.

Arsenal have had an opening offer rejected for Leicester City teenager Jeremy Monga, but the Gunners remain firmly in the race for one of English football’s most exciting young talents.

According to The Times, Arsenal submitted a bid worth £5m, including a 10 per cent sell-on clause, for the 16-year-old winger. Leicester turned down that proposal, but there appears to be room for negotiation.

Nottingham Forest are reportedly one of the leading contenders to sign Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lucas Bergvall this summer.

According to talkSPORT, the Sweden international has told Spurs he wants to leave, despite only signing a contract extension until 2031 last year.

That makes his situation one of the more interesting midfield stories of the window.

Chelsea and Villa not active for Bergvall

Sheffield United are moving closer to bringing Kalvin Phillips back to Bramall Lane, with advanced talks taking place with Manchester City over a fresh loan deal.

According to Football Insider, the Blades are working to finalise another agreement for the 30-year-old England midfielder after his previous spell in South Yorkshire.

Phillips joined Sheffield United on loan in February but his time on the pitch was limited after a knee injury disrupted his season.

Even so, the fact United are pushing to bring him back says plenty about how highly Chris Wilder still rates him.

Is it a gamble worth taking for Sheffield United?

From Sheffield United’s point of view, this would be a calculated risk rather than a flashy signing.

Phillips has not had an easy few years since leaving Leeds United for Man City in 2022, struggling for regular football under Pep Guardiola and then failing to fully rebuild his rhythm during loan spells away from the Etihad.

However, there is still a player there. At his best, Phillips offers control, defensive discipline and leadership in midfield, exactly the type of profile Sheffield United could use if they want to build a stronger promotion push.

ESPN also reported earlier in June that the Blades were interested in re-signing him, so this has clearly been a long-running target rather than a sudden move.

If Vušković is available, even at a high price, he fits the profile of a player who could grow into a top Premier League defender.

Liverpool should be more aggressive in this race than United. Vušković looks like a natural fit for a defensive rebuild and could be developed without needing to carry the team immediately.

Chelsea have started talks over a move for Crystal Palace centre-back Maxence Lacroix as Xabi Alonso looks to reshape his defence this summer.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Blues have opened discussions for the French defender, who has emerged as one of several centre-back options under consideration at Stamford Bridge.

The Telegraph has reported that Chelsea are preparing to advance their interest, while Evening Standard claims the club are ready to sell Trevoh Chalobah this summer if the right offer arrives.

The French centre-back is currently at the World Cup as he is a part of the France national team squad.

Chalobah exit could unlock move

Chalobah’s future is central to the situation.

The defender is wanted in Italy, with Como among the clubs showing interest.

Because he is an academy graduate, any sale would also help Chelsea financially from a squad-building perspective.

That may explain why Chelsea are moving early on alternatives. Lacroix is not the only name being assessed, but he appears to be one of the more realistic Premier League-proven options.

This is a sensible direction for Chelsea. Alonso’s system needs defenders who can cover space, defend one-v-one and build attacks calmly. Lacroix ticks many of those boxes.

Talks have started, Chelsea are working on several centre-back options, and the number of defensive signings could depend heavily on Chalobah’s future.

Tottenham Hotspur are still trying to reach an agreement with Manchester City for Brazilian winger Savinho, with the player already understood to be open to the move.

According to journalist Nicolo Schira, Spurs remain in talks with City as they look to bring the 22-year-old to north London.

Savinho has reportedly given his availability to join Tottenham for around two weeks, meaning the biggest obstacle is no longer the player’s side, it is the club-to-club negotiation.

That is an important detail. When a player is open to the move, it usually gives the buying club more confidence.

But Man City are not an easy club to negotiate with, especially when they believe a player still has long-term value.

This deal makes a lot of sense for Roberto De Zerbi.

Tottenham need more pace, creativity and unpredictability in wide areas, and Savinho offers exactly that.

He is direct, technically sharp and comfortable attacking defenders in one-v-one situations.

Football365 previously reported that Schira claimed Savinho was getting closer to Tottenham after agreeing terms on a long-term deal.

Spurs Web also reported that the winger had agreed a contract until 2031.

For Spurs, this is not just about adding another attacker. It is about giving De Zerbi the type of explosive wide player who can stretch teams and make his possession-heavy system more dangerous.

Man City decision remains key

The main question is Man City’s valuation. Savinho has not always been guaranteed minutes, but City know his age and profile make him a valuable asset.

They may only sell if Tottenham reach a serious fee. This is the kind of signing Spurs should push hard for.

He is young enough to improve, but already experienced enough to make a mark at Spurs.

Tottenham are still working on the deal, Savinho is open to joining, and the final decision now rests on whether Spurs can satisfy Man City.

In what could be a busy summer for the Gunners, it seems they’re dead set on Villa and England attacker Rogers as one of their top priorities.

That’s according to the Evening Standard, who also claim that Arsenal are closing in on a £10m deal for Leicester City wonderkid Monga, and that the north London giants have also held talks over Lille midfield wonderkid Bouaddi.

Arsenal fans will be excited to see increasing coverage on the club’s pursuit of Rogers, who finished the 2025/26 season with 14 goals and eight assists in all competitions.

The England international can play wide on the left or as a number ten – two positions Mikel Arteta could do with strengthening.

How Arsenal could line up with Morgan Rogers and Ayyoub Bouaddi signings

Out of those names being linked, it seems likely that only Rogers and Bouaddi would go into the Arsenal starting line up straight away.

Even then, it’s not exactly clear how AFC would line up, with Rogers looking like a decent upgrade on Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard on the left, though Martin Odegaard’s fitness and form is also a concern.

Bouaddi would probably not start a lot of games straight away, but has shown huge potential in recent times and could be a good option to occasionally partner Declan Rice in midfield…

Posting on his official X account, Romano says that Como are keen on Chalobah and seem to have moved ahead of Inter Milan in the race for his signature.

For now, however, Chalobah is at the World Cup 2026 with England, and will seemingly not rush into a decision on his future, according to Romano…

It’s probably time for Chelsea and Chalobah to part ways, even if the 26-year-old has been a solid and reliable servant for the club.

With over 150 Chelsea appearances to his name, Chalobah has been something of a stalwart for the Blues in this rather chaotic period of much chopping and changing of both managers and players.

Still, it’s also probably the case that CFC need to be aiming a bit higher in central defence, so Chalobah might also think of this as a good time to move on.

Como, managed by former Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas, also looks like an attractive project at the moment, so could be a good destination for Chalobah to play regularly and contribute to a team’s development.

Chelsea to replace Trevoh Chalobah?

It’s worth noting that Como’s bid for Chalobah also comes as Chelsea seem to be working on centre-back signings of their own.

Plans could already be underway for the west London giants to replace Chalobah with Crystal Palace’s Maxence Lacroix or Como’s talented young defender Jacobo Ramon.

Sources: Arsenal lower their asking price for first-team star as transfer saga continues

Arsenal are understood to have lowered their asking price for Gabriel Jesus to something more in the region of £20-25m.

Sources I’ve spoken to today, who’ve asked to remain anonymous to protect relationships, state that the Gunners are now open to slightly lower offers for Jesus, having initially wanted closer to £30m for the Brazilian forward.

Jesus himself is not pushing to leave the Emirates Stadium this summer, but Arsenal are likely to make changes to their attack and there’s a willingness to get the injury-prone 29-year-old off the club’s wage bill.

Everton have a long-standing interest in Jesus, but have not yet come forward with an offer, while there’s also been some indication of interest from his former club Palmeiras.

For the time being, however, nothing has advanced with this deal due to concerns over Jesus’ asking price and his wage demands.

Arsenal trying to attract Gabriel Jesus suitors

“Arsenal are hoping to sell Gabriel Jesus this summer and there’s an awareness that that means being more realistic about their asking price,” one source said.

“At the moment the message is that clubs won’t pay big for him – there are understandable concerns about his fitness record.”

This is likely to be one of a number of sales made by Arsenal this summer, as I’ve previously reported.

The Premier League champions are also open to offloading the likes of Gabriel Martinelli, Leandro Trossard, Christian Norgaard, and loaned-out misfits such as Fabio Vieira and Reiss Nelson.

Despite plenty of talk about Ethan Nwaneri, I’m still getting fairly mixed messages from sources I’ve spoken to. I’ll keep doing some digging and report back when I have something that actually feels concrete.

As reported earlier today, it is my understanding that Viktor Gyokeres is NOT likely to leave Arsenal this summer, while the Julian Alvarez deal also looks tricky for the Gunners as things stand.

Barcelona are reportedly open to offers for defender Jules Kounde this summer following recent interest from Chelsea and Liverpool.

We recently reported that Chelsea were keen on Kounde, while Liverpool could also be one to watch in the race for his signature.

Now a report from Sport states that the France international’s Barca future is in some doubt this summer, with the club open to a sale, though the player himself would prefer to stay.

Additional information from Fichajes states that Kounde’s asking price would be in the region of €65m, which could well be tempting for some top clubs out there.

Where next for Jules Kounde as Barcelona open to offers?

Kounde can play centre-back or right-back to a high standard, and has been pretty consistent with his performances for Barcelona and the French national team down the years.

The 27-year-old surely still has plenty to offer at the highest level, but it’s not clear what the future holds for him at this stage.

Sport suggests Kounde is no longer viewed as untouchable, but if he wants to stay at the Nou Camp then it could be tricky to arrange an exit.

Despite our previous information about Chelsea’s interest in Kounde, there has seemingly not been any significant update, with the Blues instead continuing to target top young talents.

That looks set to see the west Londoners go for Marco Palestra at right-back instead, so there might not be much of a need for them to also bring in Kounde.

This would also be a big change of strategy from CFC, who have prioritised bringing in elite young players to build for the future.

While some fans might be keen to see them being more flexible with that policy, it’s perhaps hard to see Kounde being someone they’d make this exception for.

Palestra’s arrival could mean Malo Gusto leaves Stamford Bridge, but they also have Reece James in that position, so there probably wouldn’t be much sense in moving for another right-back.

After last night’s disappointing draw with Ghana, there’s more worrying World Cup news breaking for England today as Declan Rice and Reece James are reportedly fitness concerns for the Panama game.

The pair are key players for Thomas Tuchel’s side, and started both games of the World Cup campaign so far against Croatia and Ghana.

However, the Telegraph are now reporting that the duo face fitness checks ahead of the Panama game.

Declan Rice injury doesn’t look too serious

Rice couldn’t complete the 90 minutes against Croatia and also had some issues at the end of the 0-0 draw with Ghana.

The Telegraph state that the Arsenal midfielder left the stadium with strapping on his left calf, but it’s not thought to be anything particularly serious or long term.

It could, however, be an issue that requires late checks for Rice ahead of England’s final group game against Panama.

Reece James was uncomfortable against Ghana

The report is a bit vague on James’ fitness, with the Chelsea right-back said to have felt uncomfortable in the Ghana game.

Still, James was able to complete 90 minutes in both of England’s games so far, even if it’s perhaps sensible to be cautious with him due to his poor injury record over the years.

The 26-year-old is an important player for England, with the Telegraph noting that Tuchel has also had him training in midfield as he could fill in for Rice in that position.

Now, however, both players could be out for the Panama game, in a major blow for the Three Lions’ preparations in what looks a close group at the moment.

England have four points, putting them level with Ghana, while Croatia have three and Panama have zero.

Jacobs is now reporting similar, but perhaps leaving it a bit more open that the Sweden international could depart the Emirates Stadium for the right price.

When asked specifically about Gyokeres, Jacobs said: “Viktor Gyokeres is a fascinating situation. He might be available on the market for the right price.

With Gyokeres, if it hit a certain number, Arsenal wouldn’t reject out of hand.

“I don’t think he’s for sale, but I don’t think he’s untouchable.”

As already mentioned, our information as of today is that Arsenal are not looking to offload Gyokeres, and the former Sporting Lisbon man is also not pushing for an exit just a year after arriving.

Of course, the 28-year-old did have a slightly mixed first season with the Gunners, so it’s true in theory that he’d have his price, and that might not be crazy money.

At the same time, there are no talks taking place at the moment and it’s pretty much just noise, with both the club and the player on the same page in terms of preparing for pre-season and the 2026/27 campaign together.

Even if someone like Alvarez would likely be an upgrade, that deal also looks hugely ambitious at the moment, with Atletico Madrid not keen to sell and even complaining to FIFA about how Barcelona have approached the deal.

Gyokeres joined AFC during a tricky period in the strikers’ market, and the situation hasn’t really changed much since last year.

Manchester City and Nottingham Forest are reportedly set for further talks over the transfer of Elliot Anderson in a potential £130m deal.

It looks like Man City are progressing on a deal for Anderson at last after previously seeing a £120m offer rejected by Forest.

According to the Daily Mail, further negotiations are scheduled, which could see City complete a deal for Anderson for a record-breaking £130m.

The report states that this would eclipse the current record transfer fee in Britain, which Liverpool paid for Alexander Isak last summer when he moved from Newcastle for £125m.

Manchester United had also been keen on Anderson, according to the Mail, but it looks like City are now making progress on an agreement.

Elliot Anderson can undergo medical at World Cup

An interesting detail in this saga is that Anderson is currently at the World Cup 2026 with England, but he may be able to have a medical with City anyway.

Speaking on Latte Firm, journalist Ben Jacobs has reported that England manager Thomas Tuchel has no issue with his players doing medicals during international duty, which is good news for Arsenal in pursuit of Morgan Rogers, but also for City as they chase Anderson.

Chelsea are reportedly ready to step up their interest in a transfer move for Como centre-back and Arsenal target Jacobo Ramon.

We’ve previously reported on the Gunners eyeing up Ramon after his impressive form in Serie A, but there have also been plenty of other links with big clubs.

Liverpool have also been mentioned as suitors for Ramon in recent times, but for now it seems that Chelsea are doing their best to move to the front of the queue for his signature.

That’s according to TEAMtalk, who state that Chelsea are hoping to pounce amid uncertainty over the 21-year-old’s future.

Jacobo Ramon future to be resolved in next few days

Ramon started his career at Real Madrid and has shone at Como, though it seems there will soon be talks between the Spanish and Italian clubs.

Chelsea have done well in recent times to lure some of the game’s biggest talents to Stamford Bridge, and Ramon certainly fits into that category.

Ramon has developed really well under Como manager Cesc Fabregas, and that also means there’s a slight Chelsea connection there that could in theory be useful.

Chelsea need a centre-back

CFC fans will hope this deal can work out as it could be an important one to strengthen their defence.

There will be justifiable question marks about the likes of Trevoh Chalobah, Tosin Adarabioyo, and Wesley Fofana after some unconvincing form for Chelsea in recent times.

Ramon may lack experience, but he looks like the kind of young player Chelsea should be signing, as he can make an impact both straight away and represent a good long-term investment for the club.

Arsenal have been given some hugely positive transfer news on Morgan Rogers, with the World Cup 2026 hopefully not an issue in delaying the deal.

Rogers is a top target for the Gunners but is currently at the World Cup with England, though Ben Jacobs reports that manager Thomas Tuchel has no issues with his players undergoing medicals whilst on international duty.

Speaking to Latte Firm, Jacobs provided an update on Arsenal’s pursuit of Rogers, with some interesting information emerging about the Aston Villa star’s preferences.

It seems Rogers is happy to play as either a winger or a number ten at his next club, with no strong preference either way, while Jacobs generally seems confident that the 23-year-old will be heading to the Emirates Stadium…

“I do expect Arsenal to sign Morgan Rogers. He is Arsenal’s leading target for left-wing and/or #10,” Jacobs said.

“My information is that Rogers has zero preference as to whether he’s signed as a left-winger or a #10. Arsenal are expected to bid and this could move quickly.

“Remember Thomas Tuchel is perfectly happy for players to do medicals on England duty. That may be the case with Elliot Anderson and Manchester City. But Arsenal perhaps in less of a rush than Aston Villa.

“Aston Villa, even with Champions League football, are looking for a major sale to balance their books. When Rogers extended last year, there was an understanding that he could leave this summer for a fee of £80m as a starting point.

“It’s not a release clause or gentleman’s understanding, but Villa had said they will not unduly stand in his way. I’m still told engagement will start at £80m, that’s not to say it’ll be the number that secures a transfer, but that is the beginning to start a conversation with Aston Villa. I think there’s a very strong chance this deal happens.”

World Cup won’t delay Morgan Rogers deal

Arsenal fans will also surely be pleased to hear that Rogers can have a medical even while he’s away at the World Cup.

The Premier League champions will no doubt want this major deal done as quickly as possible to avoid other clubs getting involved, with Rogers sure to be hot property after two outstanding seasons in a row at Villa Park.

The England international hit double figures for goals and assists again in the 2025/26 season, and it’s clear he could improve this Arsenal side in the one area they arguably struggled most in despite winning the title.

Mikel Arteta’s men sometimes struggled in the final third, and someone like Rogers should be able to add a bit more spark, as well as more of a goal threat than the inconsistent Martin Odegaard.

If AFC can get this done, it will be just the kind of signing that could take this team to another level next season, with Arteta’s side only narrowly missing out on the Champions League when they again just lacked a little bit of attacking quality in the final defeat to PSG.

Transfer meeting supposedly “leaked” as Man United work on signing 26-year-old

Manchester United reportedly had meetings in London yesterday to discuss a potential transfer deal for Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni.

The France international has been on Man United’s radar, as we reported, though it was also our understanding that a new contract at the Bernabeu probably looks more likely at the moment.

Things can change quickly in football, though, with the Telegraph recently claiming that Tchouameni was a firm target for the Red Devils, while a team of journalists on X are now saying secret talks have taken place and have been leaked.

“We have it on good authority that a high-level meeting took place yesterday in London between Manchester United officials and representatives of Aurélien Tchouaméni. We don’t know if this meeting was supposed to be kept secret, but it has been leaked,” the reporter posted.

Aurelien Tchouameni could fix Manchester United’s midfield

Tchouameni is a top player on his day, and even if he’s not proven in the Premier League, he’s been consistent and reliable at the highest level with both Real Madrid and the French national team.

With Casemiro leaving at the end of his contract this summer, a new defensive midfield player like this makes sense as a priority for United, so it will be interesting to see if these talks amount to anything.

Talks are reportedly back on over Chelsea potentially selling Enzo Fernandez to Real Madrid, though the deal is expected to cost at least £120m.

The Blues surely won’t be too keen to let a top player like Fernandez go, but it seems the Argentina international himself is interested in the move to the Bernabeu.

That’s what’s being reported today by BBC Sport’s Nizaar Kinsella, as per the X post below…

More Chelsea exits on the cards after nightmare season?

In truth, Chelsea can’t be too surprised to see Cucurella leaving and Fernandez looking to follow, while there’s also been talk of Malo Gusto exploring an exit, as per another BBC Sport report.

This sort of exodus of big names is pretty inevitable after a dire season in which Chelsea finished all the way down in 10th in the Premier League table, missing out on European football, and also failing to win any silverware.

Fernandez may not have always been the most consistent performer for CFC, but he’s good enough that he’ll probably feel he can go on and shine for a more competitive side.

The 25-year-old could do well in the Real Madrid midfield, perhaps providing them with an upgrade on the likes of Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga.

It will be interesting to see if Chelsea also lose other stars and perhaps struggle to bring in the calibre of player required to adequately replace them.

Sources: What I’m hearing today on two major Arsenal transfer stories

I’m aware that some very good sources have been reporting on Arsenal and their pursuit of Julian Alvarez, but it would be wise for some Gooners not to get their hopes up.

Despite talk of Viktor Gyokeres potentially heading to Atletico Madrid as part of the deal to bring the Alvarez fee down, we’re currently a long, long way away from that sort of agreement.

Swap deals are rare in football and even if these two deals were negotiated separately, there are some important factors to consider here.

As per multiple sources, I can reveal the following on the Alvarez to Arsenal saga…

  • Alvarez has told his agent he only wants to join Barcelona. Perhaps things could change, but he’s not currently engaged in any kind of talks with Arsenal.
  • Although a deal with Barca is tricky due to Atletico not wanting to sell to a rival, and potentially also reporting the Catalan giants to FIFA, that doesn’t necessarily boost Arsenal.
  • Arsenal and Mikel Arteta like Alvarez a lot, but the deal is likely to be unaffordable, and things won’t progress if the player isn’t that sold on joining.
  • One very reliable source was also surprised at the Gyokeres talk, saying quite firmly: “I don’t see Gyokeres leaving – he’s happy at Arsenal and they’re happy with him.”

Could Arsenal explore alternatives to Julian Alvarez?

I’m sure Alvarez is a signing Arsenal would love to do if possible, but for now the clear signal I’m getting is that it’s really unlikely. I will of course keep you posted if things change, but I understand work has been done on alternatives.

AFC have monitored Bournemouth’s Eli Junior Kroupi closely, so he could be another one to watch for the striker position, though an attacking midfielder like Morgan Rogers is more of a priority, with Bradley Barcola also being considered.

I can also confirm that there’s no truth to the Mason Greenwood links. Arsenal do not have the former Manchester United forward on their list, even if he is expected to leave Marseille this summer.

If Greenwood does leave, he’ll most likely head to Italy, with Roma showing an interest alongside other Serie A clubs. Many people I’ve spoken to at Premier League clubs insist they won’t go anywhere near him, though.

£75m Chelsea star has already held talks over transfer to PL rivals

We could see another big name leaving Chelsea this summer as Malo Gusto seems to be exploring a transfer exit.

Marc Cucurella has already departed Stamford Bridge for a move to Real Madrid, and it looks like Gusto has discussed a possible switch to Manchester City.

That’s according to BBC Sport, who state that the France international would likely command a fee of around £75m if he were to leave.

Man City are expected to announce former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca as their replacement for Pep Guardiola, so it could be that the Italian tactician will quickly be reunited with one of his former players in Gusto.

Gusto has mostly been a pretty solid performer for Chelsea, but if they were able to raise £75m from selling the 23-year-old then that would represent a significant profit and pretty smart business overall.

Chelsea can afford to take a gamble on Malo Gusto transfer

Even if Gusto leaving would be a bit of a blow, it seems CFC are preparing for this by targeting talented young Italian right-back Marco Palestra as his replacement.

Palestra has been strongly linked with Chelsea by the Athletic and others, and could even have the potential to be better than Gusto before too long.

In the mean time, Chelsea also have Reece James for that position, so cashing in on Gusto might be worth it, even if there’s a risk that he goes on to enjoy his peak years for a major rival.

Man City looking for more specialist right-back?

City’s pursuit of Gusto is interesting as it suggests they’re keen to try something different in that position despite the fine form of Matheus Nunes.

Nunes started out in midfield before adapting well to playing right-back under Guardiola, but Gusto is more of a natural specialist in that role.

Still, £75m is also a lot of money to pay when City don’t exactly look like they need to make that position a priority this summer.

Chelsea have reportedly recently had positive talks over a potential transfer for Sporting Lisbon wide-man Maxi Araujo.

According to Simon Phillips, this came due to Sporting asking Chelsea about Pedro Neto, who was a target for them, but who has no interest in the move.

So although any prospect of Neto joining Sporting seems to be off the table, it does at least mean that Chelsea used the opportunity to also hold talks over Araujo.

Phillips states that this did lead to some positive conversations, so it will be interesting to see what this means for the Blues and a possible deal for the Uruguay international.

Araujo can play left-back or wing-back to a high standard, and even as a left-sided midfielder if need be, with the 24-year-old on a run of 11 goals and seven assists in all competitions for club and country this season.

Maxi Araujo looks a good fit for Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea

Araujo has impressed with Sporting and looks like the ideal candidate to come in and play wing-back in Xabi Alonso’s new-look Chelsea side next season.

Alonso is known for his use of three at the back and attack-minded wing-backs, with this tactical set-up delivering him a lot of success at former club Bayer Leverkusen.

It’s not a system we’ve seen a lot of in English football, but Chelsea could do well to adjust their playing style next season and make the kind of signings to fit that system.

Alonso will likely be keen on players like Araujo or similar, so it will be interesting to see if this particular deal ends up going anywhere more concrete.

CFC also need a signing at left-back anyway after the recent sale of Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid.

Some Chelsea fans will no doubt be disappointed by the decision to sell the Spain international after his strong form for the club last season, but perhaps they can actually do better in that position.

Cucurella had some issues with consistency during his time at Stamford Bridge, and Araujo is a younger player who arguably looks like he has a higher ceiling than Cucurella.

THFC probably needed to make some changes in goal this summer, but the main story will be who they decide to bring in as their new number one.

Vicario has clearly struggled in that role, so it makes sense to offload him, but for now it looks like there’s nothing advancing on a new first-choice ‘keeper.

Dubravka has plenty of experience, though, so seems like a safe option to step in as a backup when required.

The Slovakian has played for Newcastle and Manchester United as well as Burnley in the Premier League.

Liverpool have to deal with Newcastle competition for Ligue 1 sensation

Liverpool and Newcastle United could be heading for another transfer battle, with both clubs reportedly interested in Lille forward Matias Fernandez-Pardo.

According to the Daily Mail, the 21-year-old has appeared on Liverpool’s radar as a possible alternative to RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande, whose valuation has climbed to around €120m.

Newcastle are also keen, having already made contact over the Belgium forward as they search for attacking reinforcements.

Fernandez-Pardo impressed in Ligue 1 last season, directly contributing to 13 goals in 29 league appearances.

That kind of production, combined with his age and versatility, makes him an obvious target for clubs looking for long-term attacking upside.

Liverpool keeping backup plan ready

Liverpool’s first-choice attacking targets remain expensive.

Diomande is highly rated after his World Cup performances for Ivory Coast, but Leipzig’s asking price is huge.

The Reds are also monitoring PSG winger Bradley Barcola, though that deal would also be difficult.

That is why Fernandez-Pardo makes sense. He would be cheaper than Diomande, still has major development potential, and could give Andoni Iraola another quick, technical forward for his high-intensity system.

Liverpool have already beaten Newcastle to one attacking signing this summer, landing Víctor Muñoz from Osasuna for around €40m.

That makes this new race even more interesting.

Newcastle need Gordon replacement plan

For Newcastle, the need is also clear. Anthony Gordon left the club to join Barcelona and the Magpies are searching for wide players who can replace his pace and directness.

Newcastle are also tracking Köln winger Said El Mala, who has attracted interest from Brighton and Brentford.

But Fernandez-Pardo looks like one of the more advanced names on their list because contact has already been made.

The talented young West Ham midfielder is surely going to be on the move this summer after his club’s relegation to the Championship, and it seems there are now two main contenders for his signature.

Posting on X this morning, Romano explained that the “clear feeling” now is that West Ham will end up selling Fernandes to whoever offers the most money.

As per the post below, Romano has indicated that it’s now down to Man Utd and Spurs to come up with that money as the player has opened his doors to either club…

Mateus Fernandes to Manchester United or Tottenham?

Looking at those two options, it’s surely got to be United for Fernandes as he makes an important choice at this early stage of his career.

Even if it might be tempting to stay in London and to join a team where there’d be less pressure and more guaranteed playing time, Tottenham have been a mess in the last two years.

After back-to-back 17th place finishes, Spurs need to undergo a major rebuilding job, so from their point of view a signing like Fernandes could be ideal.

However, the 21-year-old would surely do much better to choose Old Trafford as his next destination.

United have improved a great deal under Michael Carrick, finishing third in the Premier League in 2025/26, securing Champions League football for next season.

Fernandes could also have a key role there as MUFC need to make changes in midfield after losing Casemiro at the end of his contract, while Manuel Ugarte could surely leave after falling out of favour.

Football Insider have linked Fernandes with Liverpool, while Romano has also previously mentioned Real Madrid, so it could be that we’ll see other clubs come back into the conversation soon, even if for now it looks like it’s a two-club race between United and Tottenham.

Tottenham Hotspur have received clarity over Lucas Bergvall’s situation after Christian Falk firmly denied suggestions that Bayern Munich are monitoring the Swedish midfielder.

The 20-year-old has been linked with a possible move away from Spurs this summer, with reports claiming he wants more regular football after a frustrating campaign.

The Sun has also reported that the midfielder has asked to leave Spurs due to limited game time.

Tottenham are believed to value him highly and would not want to lose a player with such long-term potential cheaply.

Rumours show his reputation is growing

From Tottenham’s point of view, the Bayern denial is helpful.

It removes one major European name from the conversation and gives Spurs more control over the situation.

However, the interest and speculation around Bergvall still show how highly he is rated.

He is young, technically gifted and capable of playing in several midfield roles, which makes him attractive to clubs looking for future upside.

Bayern are not interested, according to Falk. But Tottenham still need to decide whether Bergvall has a proper role under Roberto De Zerbi or whether a summer exit becomes the best solution for everyone.

Transfer news expert Christian Falk has played down Manchester City and Real Madrid transfer links with Michael Olise as Bayern Munich don’t want to sell.

The France international, currently with his country at the 2026 World Cup, has been the subject of plenty of speculation recently after a superb season for Bayern.

Olise finished the 2025/26 campaign with 22 goals and 25 assists in all competitions for his club, so it’s easy to see why the likes of City and Real would be interested.

Still, Falk has provided an update on the situation in his latest CF Bayern Insider column, explaining that Bayern don’t want to sell and are not currently under any pressure to do so due to the player’s contract.

When asked about Man City’s interest in the former Crystal Palace winger, Falk again focused on his future with Bayern and the possibility of signing a huge new contract at the Allianz Arena.

“The main thing on Olise will be whether or not he signs a new contract with FC Bayern,” Falk said.

“Bayern Munich knows that time will keep running if he doesn’t put pen to paper on new terms. So, there will be a day when they have to talk and decide to potentially sell him a year before his contract runs out. They’d have to be able to bring in money to sign a potential successor.

“At the moment, the contract is running long enough to not worry about it at this point in time. The wide man is playing very well at Bayern Munich and he’s on a five-year contract, so the club still has time to convince him to sign a new contract.”

It would undoubtedly be exciting to see Olise back in the Premier League after he previously impressed as a youngster at Palace.

There’s no doubt, however, that he’s taken his game to another level at Bayern, so he could now come back to England and immediately become one of the most important players at a big club like City.

Following the blow of Pep Guardiola stepping down as manager, City could do with a statement signing like this to breathe new life into their attack and to help get the best out of Erling Haaland.

That makes the deal complicated for Villa. Bowen is exactly the sort of attacker Emery would love, hard-working, direct, intelligent and proven in big moments but he would not come cheap.

Player sales could decide everything for Aston Villa

Villa’s interest also tells us something about their summer strategy.

They want ready-made quality, not just young prospects. However, before they can seriously push for Bowen, they may need to move on players to create room financially and in the squad.

Bowen would be a very smart signing for Villa if they can make the numbers work.

He may not be a flashy gamble, but he would immediately improve their attack and bring leadership.

At Monaco, he has developed into one of the more exciting young midfielders in Ligue 1, and his World Cup involvement with Senegal has only raised his profile further.

The midfielder has started Senegal’s first two group games at the tournament, which shows his importance at international level.

Any deal is unlikely to be completed until after the World Cup, but Newcastle’s early planning could prove important if other clubs start circling.

Tonali decision could shape everything for Newcastle United

This situation depends heavily on Tonali.

Tottenham are reportedly pushing, but Newcastle will not want to look weak in negotiations.

Bradley Barcola is another strong name on Liverpool’s list.

There is also an interesting domino effect. If PSG beat Liverpool to Diomande, they may become more open to selling Barcola to balance the squad and finances.

Evening Standard has reported that Spurs would want around £45m if they decide to sell him.

That is a big fee for a 20-year-old midfielder who still needs regular football to develop. For the Blues, that may be one reason why a move is not currently on the table.

Osorio would not arrive as a guaranteed starter. Instead, he would be a development signing with upside, the kind of player Arsenal could shape into a useful rotation option.

His pace, dribbling and ability to play from the right would give the squad another different attacking weapon.

talkSPORT previously reported that Osorio had attracted Premier League attention after a strong season, noting his speed, dribbling numbers and goal contributions for Midtjylland.

The problem for Real Madrid is obvious: Man City have him tied down until 2033.

Olise remains another option for Real Madrid

Madrid are also still monitoring Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise and could return for him after the World Cup.

He would be a different type of signing, more of a creative wide player than a pure finisher but he also fits Pérez’s desire to bring elite attacking talent to Spain.

This feels like contingency planning rather than an active negotiation.

The Three Lions had endured a frustrating first period, unable to break down Ghana’s organised defensive block on the back of their impressive 4-2 victory over Croatia, and tensions spilled into the tunnel at the interval.

Bellingham, 22, was seen exchanging words with the veteran Portuguese manager, with both player and coach having to be held back by those around them.

Morgan Rogers, Bellingham’s close friend and rival for the England No.10 shirt, stepped in to restrain his team-mate.

Bellingham clashes with Ghana manager at half-time

Photographers captured Queiroz, 73, appearing to shout at Bellingham in the immediate aftermath of the half-time whistle, and an expert lip reader has since revealed what was said.

Nicola Hickling, Expert Analyst and Professional Lip Reader at Covers.com, as reported by Daily Mail, determined that former Ghana international and current coaching staff member John Paintsil said: “F*** off mate, yeah.”

Queiroz then responded: “Hey, hey… f*** you mate, f*** you.” England manager Thomas Tuchel then intervened, telling those involved: “Just go, get off now.”

The flashpoint is believed to have stemmed from a foul by Bellingham moments before the break, when the Real Madrid star barged Jerome Opoku in front of the Ghana dugout, seemingly igniting the reaction from the opposing bench.

The match ended goalless at Boston Stadium, leaving both England and Ghana level on points in Group L ahead of their final fixtures.

The experienced manager served as Sir Alex Ferguson’s assistant at Manchester United from 2002, before briefly departing for Real Madrid, then returning to Old Trafford in June 2004 and remaining until July 2008.

He has since gone on to manage Portugal, Colombia and Egypt among others.

With qualification still not secured for either side, the tunnel incident is sure to add extra spice to what is already a tense Group L run-in.

Atletico Madrid have officially announced that they plan to make a complaint to FIFA about Barcelona’s transfer approach for Julian Alvarez.

Barca are being accused of holding talks with Alvarez whilst he’s under contract with Atletico during what the Spanish giants describe as a “protected period”.

The Argentina international is a man in demand at the moment after some superb form during his time in La Liga, and it perhaps makes sense that Barcelona have been keen on him.

Still, see below as Atletico CEO Gil Marin is quoted by journalist Fabrizio Romano as saying: “Our responsibility is to defend the interests of Atlético and that is why we are going to file a complaint with FIFA against Barcelona for negotiating with a player under an active contract during the protected period.”

What does all this mean for Julian Alvarez to Arsenal transfer?

It’s not yet clear what this means for Alvarez’s future, as journalist Isaan Khan has today also posted about Arsenal’s interest in the former Manchester City forward.

Still, it seems Atletico are not keen on selling their star player, and especially not to Barcelona.

What this means for Arsenal, we’ll have to wait and see, with Alvarez himself seemingly keen on getting his move to the Nou Camp if possible.

But given the bad blood between Atletico and Barca, it’s perhaps hard to see them doing a deal, which could allow Arsenal back in the race.

The Gunners could do with a world class striker like this in their side, but it might also be worth considering if he’s the best option to go for given that he hasn’t made them his personal priority.

Arsenal notably signed Viktor Gyokeres as a major addition up front last summer, but the jury is still out on the Sweden international, with Alvarez looking like more of an all-rounder who could be the perfect upgrade to take this team closer to Champions League glory.
