India-Pakistan Match Boosts Sri Lanka’s Tourism with Surge in Colombo Travel Costs for Flights and Hotels – What You Need to Know

India-Pakistan Match Boosts Sri Lanka’s Tourism with Surge in Colombo Travel Costs for Flights and Hotels – What You Need to Know
India-Pakistan

Colombo, Sri Lanka, is experiencing a significant surge in flight and hotel prices as thousands of cricket fans from around the world flock to the city to witness one of the most anticipated matches in the cricket calendar – the India vs. Pakistan match at the Twenty20 World Cup. This clash of cricketing titans is being held at Sri Lanka’s largest stadium, and it is expected to draw an unprecedented crowd of passionate supporters. With the game fast approaching, the demand for both accommodation and flights has skyrocketed, leading to a sharp increase in costs.

The match, scheduled for Sunday, is set to be a major draw, with approximately 35,000 tickets already sold. The rivalry between India and Pakistan is one of the most intense in international cricket, and this year’s World Cup match is no exception. Initially, Pakistan had announced plans to boycott the match, but a reversal of that decision earlier this week has sent ripples of excitement through the cricket community, making it an even more significant event for fans of both teams. The result has been a massive surge in travel to Colombo, with both flights and hotels seeing prices skyrocket as fans scramble to secure their spots for the match.

Colombo’s hotel industry has been hit hard by the sudden influx of cricket fans. Hotels that typically charge between $100 to $150 per night have seen their rates double, with some rooms now costing as much as $660 per night. The rapid rise in prices comes as the city struggles to accommodate the thousands of international tourists arriving for the match. Several hotels in Colombo have been fully booked, and many fans are now forced to turn to last-minute bookings at a significantly higher price. As the game approaches, the demand for hotel rooms continues to outstrip supply, pushing prices to record highs.

In addition to the hotel surge, flight prices have also risen sharply. Colombo-based travel agencies report that flights from nearby cities, especially Chennai and Delhi, have seen dramatic increases in fare. A one-way flight from Chennai, which is just a short 90-minute flight away from Colombo, has jumped from the typical $200-$250 range to as high as $623 to $756. Similarly, flights from Delhi have experienced a price increase of more than 50%, with one-way tickets now hovering around $666. This rise in ticket prices is a direct response to the increased demand from cricket fans eager to witness the highly anticipated showdown between India and Pakistan.

Sri Lanka’s tourism industry, which is the country’s third-largest foreign exchange earner, is expected to see a significant economic boost from the event. Known for its beautiful beaches, ancient temples, and lush tea plantations, Sri Lanka has long been a popular destination for tourists. However, with the country still recovering from a severe financial crisis and the devastation caused by a recent cyclone, hosting the India-Pakistan match provides a much-needed opportunity to revive the tourism sector. The country’s tourism officials hope that events like these will contribute to long-term growth, helping to restore the industry to pre-crisis levels.

According to tourism experts, many of the fans flocking to Colombo for the match are booking all-inclusive packages, which include flights, accommodations, and tickets to the match. These packages, depending on the inclusivity and quality of the offerings, are being sold for between $1,500 and $2,000. The high cost of these packages reflects the increased demand for services in Colombo as well as the premium nature of the event itself. For those lucky enough to secure tickets, the all-inclusive package provides a seamless experience, but it also highlights how the demand for these services is significantly impacting local businesses.

Tourism officials in Sri Lanka have been quick to highlight the impact the India-Pakistan match will have on the local economy. In the first 10 days of February, roughly 20% of the 100,000 visitors to Sri Lanka came for the match. This influx of cricket fans demonstrates the substantial potential for sports tourism to drive economic growth, especially in a country like Sri Lanka, which has recently faced significant economic setbacks. By positioning itself as a neutral venue for high-stakes cricket matches, Sri Lanka aims to attract more international sporting events in the future, helping to position the country as a hub for international cricket.

The success of hosting major events like the India-Pakistan World Cup match is seen as critical to the future of Sri Lanka’s tourism strategy. As a neutral ground for cricketing rivals, the country is hoping to build a reputation that will make it a go-to destination for future matches. By attracting high-profile events, Sri Lanka hopes to diversify its tourism offerings and position itself as a more prominent player in the global sports tourism market. This approach would not only boost tourism but also showcase Sri Lanka’s ability to host large-scale international events, further enhancing its appeal to tourists from all over the world.

Fans from both India and Pakistan have been quick to seize the opportunity to witness the historic match in person. Many have paid premium prices for front-row seats and exclusive travel packages, ensuring they will be part of this iconic sporting event. The match itself is expected to be a spectacle, not only for the quality of cricket but also for the intense atmosphere surrounding the India-Pakistan rivalry. For cricket fans, this is more than just a game; it’s an event that will be remembered for years to come.

While the economic impact of the match is certainly positive for Sri Lanka, it also serves as a reminder of the powerful influence of international sporting events on local economies. The influx of thousands of visitors from both India and Pakistan highlights the growing importance of sports tourism as a tool for economic development. With the rise of global cricket, Sri Lanka’s ability to tap into this sector could be a key factor in its long-term tourism strategy.

Sri Lanka’s tourism industry is bracing for an unforgettable weekend as the India-Pakistan match promises to bring not only a surge in economic activity but also a sense of national pride. As the country works to recover from recent challenges, events like this serve as a beacon of hope, demonstrating the potential for sports tourism to fuel growth and promote international unity through the love of cricket.

In the weeks and months to come, Sri Lanka will continue to feel the economic benefits of hosting major sporting events, and the success of the India-Pakistan World Cup match will likely serve as a model for future tourism and sporting event strategies. With its stunning natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and growing reputation as a neutral cricket venue, Sri Lanka is poised to become a central destination in the world of international sports tourism.

National team manager “optimistic” about Arsenal star’s chances of making the World Cup

Spain manager Luis de la Fuente has spoken about Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino’s chances of being fit in time for the 2026 World Cup.

Merino is currently out with a slightly unusual injury, with De la Fuente admitting that there isn’t any kind of “reference” for it, making it hard to know when he could return to action.

The Spain international has been a key player for Arsenal and for his country in recent times, and his absence is a blow for Mikel Arteta at this crucial stage of the club season.

But there’s also the World Cup coming up in the summer, and Merino will surely be desperate to make it back for this potential once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Discussing the latest on Merino’s fitness, De la Fuente said he was optimistic, even if it was hard to know for sure how serious this injury would prove to be for the 29-year-old.

“Mikel has an injury for which there are no references,” Merino told Cadena SER.

“We are optimistic, and so is he, but we don’t know, the doctors don’t even know, how long it will take, whether he will be back in March, April, May.

“We also have injuries to Barrios, Cucurella, and Fabian, who are all dealing with some discomfort. This year is proving to be very demanding.”

Can Spain win the World Cup?

Spain will be one of the favourites for the World Cup this summer, with or without Merino.

De la Fuente’s side won Euro 2024 and still have one of the very best squads in world football thanks to the presence of elite talents like Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams, Martin Zubimendi, and Rodri.

Merino has been an important part of Spain’s recent success as well, with his knack for contributing goals from midfield certainly a useful weapon for any top side.

Newcastle United star makes decision on which country to represent at 2026 World Cup

Steve Clarke has confirmed that Newcastle United winger Harvey Barnes will not be switching to playing for Scotland in order to make it to the 2026 World Cup this summer.

The 28-year-old currently has just one England cap to his name, but it seems he’s focused on trying to add to that and will not take the opportunity to switch his international allegiance to Scotland.

Clarke is preparing for Scotland’s first World Cup in 28 years this summer, and there’ll surely be plenty of fans already looking into how to buy Scotland World Cup tickets for this once-in-a-generation opportunity.

Still, it now seems to have been confirmed that Barnes won’t be a part of Scotland’s plans, with Clarke ruling it out and seeming keen to move on from the saga.

Steve Clarke on Harvey Barnes choosing England over Scotland

As quoted by BBC Sport, Clarke said: “It’s the perennial question, everybody keeps asking me about it.

“This time I can say for sure, Harvey’s going to concentrate on trying to play for England, he’s not going to come to Scotland.”

The Scotland manager added: “You can put that one out there. Nobody needs to ask me or Harvey about it any more.

“Am I disappointed? No, listen, Harvey can make up his own mind. We move on.”

Can Harvey Barnes make the England World Cup squad?

Barnes is a decent player who’s had some impressive performances for Newcastle, but it’s probably fair to say that a place in England’s World Cup squad looks a tad ambitious.

There will be a lot of competition for places in the attacking midfield department, with Thomas Tuchel having the likes of Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, Morgan Rogers, Marcus Rashford and others to choose from.

Barnes has 12 goals and two assists in all competitions for Newcastle this season, so perhaps there could be an outside chance of him having a role to play, but even then it’s unlikely he’d be a starter.

Scotland fans won’t be too bothered about this decision as no one wants to see players coming in who aren’t fully committed, but it seems like a strange choice from Barnes himself as it surely ends his hopes of playing at the World Cup, which would be seen as the pinnacle of most players’ careers.

Barnes was born in England but has Scottish grandparents on his mother’s side. He has one senior England cap, plus 14 appearances at youth level.

Top World Cup teams flock to stay in Kansas City — and it makes sense

soccer team flags against the Kansas City skyline

On Wednesday, the English soccer federation confirmed one of the most exciting recent surprises in Kansas City sports news: The England national team will join Argentina in making the city its base camp for the 2026 World Cup.

Well, to call it a surprise might be a stretch.

At soccer fields, community events and sports bars around KC, I heard whispers of this going back to 2025. In fact, the rumors have been so long-standing that I was beginning to worry.

I had reason to doubt. (Doubting Thomas, indeed.)

It seemed improbable that the metro area would welcome two of the top four ranked teams in the world during the weeks surrounding the tournament.

The news improved again Thursday. The Netherlands will also be in Kansas City for the tournament. Yes, the same joyous fans who gave us this video before the European championships in 2024 will make KC their home.

Earlier this month, the world No. 1 Argentina confirmed their training grounds in Kansas at Sporting Kansas City’s facility and their base camp at the Savoy Hotel.

“Having World Cup champions in Argentina and England choose Sporting Kansas City training facilities as their base camp for FIFA World Cup 2026 is a tremendous honor that reinforces that Kansas City is not only at the heart of the game in this country but also a premier destination for elite international soccer,” Sporting Kansas City president and CEO Jake Reid said in a press release. (A disclaimer here: Reid is a family friend.)

Want to hear additional World Cup base camp rumors? You don’t have to listen too hard.

Perhaps the English team will be housed on the Kansas side of the state line?

Maybe the Netherlands will schedule a warm-up match here? That’s likely, according to reporting out of the Netherlands

Regardless, our region should celebrate the accomplishment of having all of this talent in the heartland.

Consider it this way. For the purpose of seeding the World Cup, FIFA, the organizing body of the tournament and international soccer, grouped teams into four “pots.” (Yes, that is their word — conjuring visions of footballers being lumped into heaping cauldrons.)

If Kansas City secures the Netherlands as expected, our region would have three “Pot 1” teams: three of the top 12 teams. You would expect many fewer than that for one city, considering there are 16 host cities in the tournament.

Add to that, some teams aren’t even choosing host cities for their base camps. The Saudi Arabian team will stay in Austin, Texas. Uruguay selected the beach resort of Playa Del Carmen, Mexico, which sounds more like vacation than work to me.

Meanwhile, the Kansas City metro area has potentially landed three of the top 12.

This week’s press release from Sporting Kansas City described base camps as a “home away from home” that is “designed to provide a hub where teams will arrive ahead of their first match and will be available for those teams to return to between matches.”

How much time does the team spend in the base camp city? Almost the entire tournament. The team typically flies to out-of-town matches for one night away from base camp. After the match, they shuttle back to their base camp city to snuggle back into their familiar hotel.

And how much freedom will players have to explore the city? For many players — think Argentina’s megawatt star Lionel Messi — security holds them incredibly close, which only makes sense for safety.

During a recent visit to India, chaos broke out and an event was canceled after crowds surged at the chance to see Messi, even from hundreds of yards away. His personal security guard has risen as a social media celebrity, guarding the GOAT on and off the field.

Aside from Messi, other players will be tightly controlled. Also staying here in Kansas City, three of England’s national team players, Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka, are among the 50 most marketable athletes in the world, according to SportsPro

We shouldn’t expect to run into Kane, the star striker for England, in the line (pardon me: “queue”) for a Z-Man sandwich at Joe’s KC this June.

These men need crowd control.

The players’ peak performance also limits their public exposure. Their schedules often will be limited to sleep, team meals, training sessions and time with family.

Attracting teams to base camp in the Midwest required facilities, and contrary to what many Americans might assume about the overlap of Kansas City and the sport of soccer, the area boasts great training facilities.

Landing elite teams was a shared soccer project across the state line, with both Kansas and Missouri providing vital soccer facilities for the confirmed and projected World Cup teams.

England announced Wednesday that the team will train in Missouri at Swope Soccer Complex, a swath of fields on the east side of the city that many soccer kids (and their carpooling parents) know well from weekend soccer games and evening practices. It’s surreal that my son has played dozens of matches in the same complex that will host the Three Lions, as the team is known.

Argentina selected the Kansas-side training center of Sporting Kansas City, just across Interstate 435 from the Legends shopping and sports complex. It’s another location that some Kansas City soccer die-hards know well from youth soccer. Lionel: I am happy to recommend my favorite parking spot.

In 2018, that facility was opened as the U.S. Soccer National Development Center. (This spring, an additional training center and headquarters will open in Georgia.)

In Lawrence, a team will likely settle at Rock Chalk Park, the home of soccer for the University of Kansas. FIFA lists the Oread Hotel, perched at a high point of the campus, as a local option for a team based there.

The Netherlands will use the Riverside, Missouri, training grounds of KC Current, the professional women’s soccer team. This location is separate from CPKC Stadium, the first stadium built expressly for women’s professional sports.

This list of facilities — stadiums, training grounds, hotels and, yes, a new international airport — drew national teams to Kansas City.

Another factor must have been our central location. Map out the host cities for the World Cup and you find an outlier in the unlikeliest place: right in the middle.

Teams value short travel days to keep their athletes fresh, which is difficult away from the Midwest.

Atlanta, Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Miami sit on the east coast. To the west, there is Seattle, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Cities in Mexico are so far south, and Canada so far north. Teams saw a city that featured less travel sitting right there in the middle: Kansas City.

For the World Cup, you might say that fly-over country has become fly-into country.

Netherlands drop insane throwback kits for 2026 FIFA World Cup

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is slated to be the biggest in men’s soccer history with 48 nations competing, and the Netherlands are hoping to channel success from past tournaments.

The European nation returns to the top stage in the sport with a talented roster after making a deep run in 2022. However, the previously World Cup in Qatar was missing a crucial ingredient for the Dutch side.

Soccer fans have become enamored by the Netherlands’ new kits for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This comes after the nation used inspiration from its old jerseys from 1988 when Ruud Gullit led the country.

Gullit and Co. appeared at the 1990 FIFA World Cup after missing out on two straight appearances at the tournament prior to that.

In 2026, the Dutch will have significant expectations while donning their impressive Nike kits. This comes as the Netherlands look to avenge top nations like Argentina, Portugal and Spain.

Holland has a deep squad including Premier League stars like Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo and Xavi Simons. Meanwhile, veteran goalscorer Memphis Depay returns to the European squad as he and his teammates look to break through in another major competition.

The Dutch will face Japan, Tunisia and another European qualifying nation during Group F this summer. Holland enters the tournament as firm favorites to finish atop the group and make a run into the knockout phase just like during the 2022 tournament.

Los Angeles Joins New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Phoenix, Portland, San Diego and More in Activating a Massive Tourism Expansion Strategy Ahead of FIFA World Cup 2026

Los Angeles Joins New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Phoenix, Portland, San Diego and More in Activating a Massive Tourism Expansion Strategy Ahead of FIFA World Cup 2026

Los Angeles Joins New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Phoenix, Portland, San Diego and More in activating an ambitious tourism expansion strategy designed to capture the massive wave of international travelers expected for FIFA World Cup 2026. With global attention turning toward the United States and eight matches set to be played in LA, city leaders are accelerating destination marketing, strengthening airline partnerships, and enhancing visitor experiences to drive record arrivals, boost tourism revenue, and position the city as a premier gateway for the world’s biggest sporting event.

The city is gearing up to host eight high-stakes matches along with 39 days of immersive fan celebrations. Beyond the action on the pitch, travelers will find a destination alive with headline entertainment, diverse neighborhoods, standout dining, thriving arts and culture, and a wave of new attractions set to debut in time for the world’s biggest sporting event.

“As we prepare for one of the biggest years in our city’s history, this campaign reflects our commitment to the thousands of Angelenos and hundreds of local businesses who depend on tourism,” said Eileen Hanson, Chief Marketing Officer, Los Angeles Tourism. “As an official Los Angeles World Cup Host City Supporter, the World Cup offers a moment to showcase the creativity, diversity, and spirit that sets Los Angeles apart, and we’re proud to welcome fans as they begin their journeys here.”

The promotional drive spans influential markets at home and abroad, targeting travelers in the United Kingdom, Australia, Mexico, and South Korea, along with major U.S. gateways such as New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Phoenix, Portland, Detroit, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Sacramento, and Washington, DC. The media strategy blends broadcast television and connected TV with digital banners, search campaigns, social storytelling, and eye-catching large-scale outdoor placements. The goal is simple: motivate fans to lock in their travel plans early for what promises to be one of the most significant sporting moments in recent history.

In London, the campaign takes over Waterloo Station, one of Europe’s busiest rail hubs, turning it into a bold tribute to Los Angeles and the energy of world football. The activation transforms daily commuter traffic into a global audience, complete with immersive visuals and live moments that celebrate the sport’s flair. Influencer-led storytelling extends the experience online, using creative visuals and playful narratives to bring LA’s football spirit and lifestyle to life for international viewers.

Strategic airline and media alliances form another pillar of the campaign. In Australia, collaboration with United Airlines spotlights nonstop connections to Los Angeles, supported by targeted outreach in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane. In Mexico, Los Angeles branding continues to soar through a dedicated aircraft presence, integrated with a wide-reaching multimedia effort alongside leading broadcast partners. Over in South Korea, the message commands attention in Seoul’s famed K-Pop Square through a striking three-dimensional billboard installation featuring prominent LA football figures, merging pop culture and sport in one high-impact display.

Digital engagement plays a central role as well. A partnership with OneFootball connects Los Angeles to a massive international fan base that consumes football content daily. Through curated features, interactive content, and targeted placements, the city is introduced as more than just a host venue—it is presented as an experience layered with culture, creativity, and celebration.

For travelers seeking practical details, a dedicated multilingual platform on DiscoverLA.com serves as the campaign’s information hub. Visitors can browse curated neighborhood guides, explore cultural highlights, and dive into culinary recommendations through features such as a World Cup-inspired dining trail. Working alongside the Los Angeles World Cup 2026 Host Committee, tourism leaders have also assembled a comprehensive 39-day calendar outlining fan gatherings, community events, and official Fan Zone locations across the city.

At the community level, businesses are being encouraged to join the momentum through themed décor kits designed to create a unified welcome for international guests. Plans are also underway for the official FIFA Fan Festival™, which will convert the historic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum into a lively gathering space filled with screenings, entertainment, and cultural showcases in June 2026. Further programming details are scheduled for release closer to the event.

This wide-reaching initiative reflects Los Angeles’ broader trajectory as a stage for world-class spectacles. From marquee basketball weekends and major golf championships to the upcoming Super Bowl and the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the city continues to position itself at the intersection of sport, entertainment, and global culture—ready to welcome the world once again.

Delaware Partners with Philadelphia Soccer 2026 to Bring FIFA World Cup Excitement, Driving its Tourism Growth and Boosting Local Businesses

Delaware Partners with Philadelphia Soccer 2026 to Bring FIFA World Cup Excitement, Driving its Tourism Growth and Boosting Local Businesses

The state of Delaware is ready for a fun-packed year to come with the state partnering with Philadelphia Soccer 2026 to bring the world-famous FIFA World Cup 2026™ event to the First State. As such, the state of Delaware is to hold a series of watch parties to showcase this world’s largest sporting event, at the same time promoting tourism growth, business engagement, and development. This is an opportunity for people to get immersed in the festivities of this world-famous event, as they get to explore the tourism Delaware has to offer.

The enthusiasm and excitement around the event were captured succinctly by Governor Matt Meyer: Delaware is a small state with a big heart, and this summer, we’re going to feel the biggest game on Earth, together. The opportunity offered by the FIFA World Cup is a great chance for Delaware not only to promote tourism in the state but also to help Delaware businesses and grow the economy of the state. This partnership of Delaware and Philadelphia Soccer 2026 positions Delaware as a major participant in the regional tourism industry for a once-in-a-lifetime event.

A Positive Tourism Impact: Global Exposure and Economic Growth for Delaware

The FIFA World Cup 2026™ offers Delaware a unique chance to shine on the global stage. As part of the event, Delaware will host four watch parties across the state, with each event serving as a major tourism attraction. With the estimated regional economic impact of hosting the World Cup in Philadelphia at $770 million, Delaware is set to benefit from the global influx of tourists traveling to the region for the matches. The World Cup Final celebration at University of Delaware Stadium will serve as the crown jewel of this initiative, drawing even more visitors to Delaware.

These tourism-driven events are expected to boost local economies by creating an estimated increase in hotel bookings, restaurant revenues, and retail activity in Delaware. By showcasing its own array of tourist attractions, historic sites, local culture, and family-friendly destinations, Delaware is well-positioned to attract a diverse range of international visitors who will stay, dine, shop, and explore beyond just the World Cup events.

Watch Parties in Every County: A Catalyst for Regional Tourism

Delaware’s statewide World Cup watch parties will be a catalyst for regional tourism in each of the state’s three counties. The watch parties will take place in Newark, Milton, Harrington, and Newark again for the World Cup Final, with each event featuring pre-match entertainment, local vendors, and interactive games for the whole family. These community-centered events will serve as tourism hubs, drawing visitors from neighboring states, particularly Pennsylvania, Maryland, and New Jersey, as well as international tourists traveling to the area for the World Cup.

By hosting these events, Delaware not only engages the local community but also increases awareness of its tourist offerings. For visitors attending the watch parties, the opportunity to explore Delaware’s vibrant attractions—such as the beaches of Rehoboth, the historic landmarks in Dover, and family-friendly activities across the state—becomes an added incentive to stay longer and explore more.

Leveraging the FIFA World Cup to Attract Year-Round Tourism

Delaware’s strategy to leverage FIFA World Cup 2026™ as a driver for year-round tourism is a key part of its overall tourism development plan. By offering engaging events such as watch parties, Delaware has the opportunity to promote itself as a year-round destination. The state can showcase its historic charm, coastal beauty, and outdoor experiences, making it an appealing place to visit not just during major events, but throughout the year.

As tourism infrastructure continues to grow, Delaware will likely see increased international visitor interest, particularly in off-peak seasons when tourists might otherwise focus on major cities. With this global exposure, Delaware is positioning itself to expand its tourism appeal well beyond the World Cup, tapping into adventure tourism, culinary tourism, and cultural tourism opportunities.

Additionally, the FIFA World Cup 2026™ provides an opportunity for Delaware to strengthen its relationships with international tourism markets. Partnerships with global organizations, including hotels, restaurants, and tour operators, will help elevate the state’s profile as a destination of choice for future tourists.

Community Impact and Local Business Engagement

As Delaware prepares for the World Cup festivities, the state is actively working with local businesses to maximize the tourism impact. The DTO is collaborating with hotels, restaurants, retailers, and event spaces to ensure that businesses are equipped to handle the influx of tourists during the World Cup events. This collaboration is critical in ensuring that the tourism sector benefits directly from the World Cup excitement while also boosting local business revenue.

By hosting a large-scale international event like the World Cup, Delaware is also enhancing its reputation as a friendly, welcoming destination for tourists from around the world. The event brings exposure to Delaware’s hospitality sector, with restaurants and local vendors benefiting from the increased foot traffic generated by watch parties. Moreover, the positive tourism impact will extend well beyond the World Cup as international visitors will likely return to Delaware for future vacations or business trips.

Partnerships and Sponsorships: Elevating Delaware’s Global Tourism Presence

To further engage with the global audience, the Delaware Tourism Office (DTO) is offering sponsorship opportunities for businesses and corporations that want to capitalize on the tourism potential of the World Cup. With its exclusive partnerships, Delaware businesses have a chance to promote their services and products to a wider market, reaching global visitors who are eager to experience all that Delaware has to offer.

In addition, DTO is hosting a pep rally in May at the DE Turf in Frederica, allowing residents and tourists alike to get excited for the upcoming World Cup events. The pep rally will further raise tourism awareness and encourage community involvement, making it a perfect lead-up to the official World Cup watch parties.

Lasting Tourism Impact and Economic Growth from the FIFA World Cup

The entry of Delaware into FIFA World Cup 2026™ will prove to be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Delaware to ensure tourism growth in the region, support businesses throughout the region, and create a long-lasting change for the economy. The entry of Delaware into the important event will definitely ensure a place for the state as a year-round vacation destination, while giving residents and tourists a lifetime of experiences with the upcoming World Cup Watch Parties. Delaware will ensure the tourism industry continues to grow and the positive impact of world tourism will be felt throughout the years.

Thomas Tuchel speaks out on “clear” World Cup plan after signing new England contract

England manager Thomas Tuchel has spoken out on his plans for the World Cup this summer after announcing that he’s signed a new contract.

The German tactician is delighted to have extended his deal with the England national team, and has explained why he didn’t initially commit to a longer contract when he first took over.

Tuchel says he didn’t want to lose focus on the World Cup, but now feels fully focused and confident in his plans for the tournament, which also enables him to commit his future to beyond that as well.

Speaking to the England football team’s official site, Tuchel said: “The thing that I only signed for 18 months was my wish and I didn’t want to lose the focus towards the World Cup. Now, after more than one year in the job, I can say I will not lose the focus.

“We are very, very clear who we want to nominate, how we want to nominate and how we want to present ourselves in the World Cup. This will now give us clarity that after the World Cup, we will continue, then we will compete in the Nations League.”

"It's amazing." ??

— England (@England) February 12, 2026

How far can Thomas Tuchel take England in the World Cup?

England will be one of the favourites at the World Cup this summer, along with other major nations like France, Spain, and holders Argentina.

Tuchel has great experience from club football, winning the Champions League during his time at Chelsea, as well as other major titles with elite sides like Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain.

On top of that, the 52-year-old has a great record with England so far, winning nine out of his ten games in charge of the Three Lions.

Gareth Southgate took England to two finals and one semi-final, and the hope will be that a more proven winner like Tuchel can help the team to take that final step and win a trophy at long last.

England are still waiting for their first tournament victory since the World Cup final all the way back in 1966.

Blow for Man United as Thomas Tuchel expected to stay as England manager after World Cup

Thomas Tuchel is reportedly expected to sign a contract to keep him on as England manager even after the 2026 World Cup this summer.

The German tactician has done an impressive job with England so far, winning nine and losing just one of his ten games in charge.

Tuchel, a Champions League winner from his time at Chelsea, looks like he’s proving to be the ideal upgrade England needed after Gareth Southgate, and the Times report some positive news for Three Lions supporters.

They state that Tuchel now looks set to agree a new deal to stay on with England until 2028, which could be a blow to Manchester United and other big clubs.

Thomas Tuchel’s England stay is a blow for Manchester United

Tuchel has an impressive CV in his managerial career, so it’s not too surprising that he’s been linked with the Man United job in recent times.

See below as talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook mentioned he’d heard a lot about Tuchel being a candidate for the Red Devils, who will need to replace interim manager Michael Carrick at the end of this season…

Carrick has done an impressive job in his brief time in charge so far, but MUFC will surely want someone more experienced to come in.

Tuchel could have been ideal after doing such strong work at big clubs like Chelsea, Bayern Munich, and Paris Saint-Germain, as well as with England.

However, it looks like this won’t be possible now, so United will have to look elsewhere if they decide not to keep Carrick on permanently.

In a way, it’s surprising that England aren’t waiting until seeing how Tuchel gets on at the World Cup before making this decision.

England reached the finals of Euro 2020 and 2024, so there’ll be a lot of pressure on Tuchel to take the team one step further and to finally lift a trophy.

It won’t be easy, though, so even if Tuchel has done well so far, it seems a tad premature to be rewarding him with a new deal before seeing how he fares at a major tournament.

The 2026 U.S. Hotel Industry Outlook: FIFA World Cup, Demand Shifts, and RevPAR Stabilization in Cities like Chicago, Houston, and Los Angeles—Here’s What Travelers Can Expect

The 2026 U.S. Hotel Industry Outlook: FIFA World Cup, Demand Shifts, and RevPAR Stabilization in Cities like Chicago, Houston, and Los Angeles—Here’s What Travelers Can Expect
The 2026 U.S. Hotel Industry Outlook

The U.S. hotel industry, despite facing numerous economic hurdles and geopolitical uncertainties, is expected to experience a slight recovery in 2026. The forecast predicts a 0.6% growth in Revenue per Available Room (RevPAR), a welcome improvement after a tumultuous 2025, which marked the first non-recessionary drop in RevPAR in history. While the sector continues to grapple with issues such as economic uncertainty, geopolitical instability, and domestic tensions, there are also signs that the worst is behind them, with some market segments beginning to show signs of improvement.

The hotel industry’s performance is significantly tied to broader economic conditions. Despite the challenges, there is hopeful optimism that the recovery will gain momentum, particularly driven by the FIFA World Cup, which is anticipated to provide a boost to demand in specific U.S. markets.

Mixed Trends in Hotel Segments as Demand Shifts

While overall demand in the U.S. hotel market saw a 0.5% decline in 2025, recovery is on the horizon, with a forecasted +0.4% rebound for 2026. This growth is expected to vary by market segment. Hotels in the mid-tier and luxury segments are expected to see some relief, while select-service and economy hotels continue to face pressure. Average Daily Rates (ADR) are projected to grow by 1%, a modest uptick from the previous forecast of 0.9%.

The main contributors to demand decline in 2025 were Hurricane Milton and Hurricane Helene, which displaced large numbers of bookings in several U.S. regions. As those storm-related disruptions subside, demand growth is expected to gain strength in the second half of 2026.

Factors Behind the Stabilization of RevPAR in 2026

Despite the challenging backdrop, the hotel sector is expected to stabilize in 2026 for several reasons. One key factor is the calendar composition in 2026, which is more favorable than in 2025. This better calendar placement will help increase demand during holidays and peak travel periods. Additionally, the FIFA World Cup, scheduled for the summer of 2026, will undoubtedly boost hotel performance, particularly in host cities, as soccer fans flood the U.S. for the tournament.

The World Cup’s impact is projected to be felt across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, where RevPAR could see a 0.4% lift, with certain cities benefitting more based on their proximity to the matches. France, Brazil, and Argentina are expected to be key demand drivers, drawing a substantial number of international visitors.

Outlook for Group Business and the Role of Event Tourism

The group business segment had a challenging 2025, with a 1.8% drop in demand. However, this was somewhat mitigated by a 4% rise in ADR, indicating that although there were fewer bookings, those who did book paid higher rates. Group demand is expected to stabilize in 2026, with solid rates and more short-term bookings, particularly in the latter half of the year.

As the U.S. sees more conferences, business events, and corporate travel returning in 2026, expect a more robust performance in hotels catering to this segment. While event-related tourism remains key to hotel performance in major cities, its fluctuations will need to be carefully managed.

Reduced Supply Growth and Its Impact on U.S. Hotels

Hotel supply is anticipated to grow at a slower rate in 2026, with an expected increase of 0.7%, a downward revision from the previous 0.9%. The construction pipeline remains strong, with nearly 767,000 new rooms in the pipeline, though a significant portion of these are still in the planning and early construction phases. With only 19% of these rooms under construction, supply growth will remain constrained in the short term, making it easier for hoteliers to maintain rates.

Notably, the conversion rate of existing hotels has surged, with nearly 1,900 hotels undergoing conversions in 2025, the highest since 2016. This indicates that hotel owners are finding it more viable to convert existing structures than to build new ones, a trend likely to continue in the face of rising construction costs and financing challenges.

Boost in International Demand and the Role of the FIFA World Cup

International travel to the U.S. is expected to rebound in 2026, with a 3.7% growth in inbound tourism, although levels will still be below those seen in 2019. The World Cup is predicted to play a significant role in this growth, contributing approximately 1.1% to the RevPAR increase, particularly in cities where matches are being held.

Outbound travel from the U.S. will also continue to rise, with 4.6% growth projected in 2026, following a 4.7% rise in 2025. These global travel trends indicate that U.S. hotels will not only benefit from international visitors but will also see increasing demand for international business and leisure travel from American travelers heading abroad.

Long-Term U.S. Hotel Industry Outlook: Subdued Growth Ahead

Looking beyond 2026, the U.S. hotel industry’s long-term prospects are expected to remain somewhat muted. The 2027 and 2028 projections reflect modest growth in RevPAR, at 1.4% and 2.0%, respectively. ADR will continue to be the primary growth driver, although it is expected to remain below the pace of inflation. These subdued forecasts indicate that the recovery in the hotel industry will be gradual, with demand likely to fluctuate based on broader global economic and political conditions.

Travel Tips for 2026: Booking Hotels and Navigating Key Events

  • Book Early for World Cup Dates: Travelers planning to visit U.S. host cities during the FIFA World Cup should consider booking accommodations early. The surge in demand during match dates will likely lead to price increases and limited availability.
  • Plan for Business Events: As business and corporate travel are forecasted to rise, hotels near convention centers and business districts will be in high demand. If you’re planning a visit during a major conference or event, early bookings are recommended.
  • Keep an Eye on ADR Trends: Hotel prices will likely remain high in some regions, especially in premium segments. Travelers should watch for promotions and deals in the off-peak months.
  • Flexibility is Key: Given the volatile nature of the market, be prepared for changes in availability and pricing. Booking flexible rates may help mitigate last-minute travel disruptions.

Abhishek Sharma hospitalised; doubtful for India’s match against Namibia

Prolific Indian opener Abhishek Sharma has been hospitalised with an upset stomach before the group match against Namibia at the T20 World Cup, Indian media and officials say.

Sharma, who is the top-ranked T20I batter in the world, is likely to miss India’s second match of the tournament against Namibia on Thursday.

“Abhishek has been admitted to a private hospital in Delhi due to a stomach infection,” an official of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) told the country’s PTI news agency.

“Some tests are being done to ascertain the problem. It is still not clear whether he will be discharged today. But the match against Namibia looks doubtful as of now.”

The explosive left-hander is key to India’s chances of defending their title at the 20-team tournament, and his participation in the marquee match against Pakistan remains uncertain.

The 25-year-old was admitted to a New Delhi hospital on Tuesday after he missed training with a stomach issue he carried from the opening match in Mumbai, the AFP news agency said.

India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate acknowledged the concern in his pre-match news conference on Tuesday, saying the batsman had “still got a few issues with his tummy”.

“We hope that he’ll be available for the game in a few days’ time.”

Abhishek was out for a duck in India’s win over the United States, but has been a strong performer in the lead-up to the tournament.

Pakistan will be eager to improve on their opening-day performance of the T20 World Cup, while the United States will look to cause an upset when both teams meet in their Group A fixture in Colombo on Tuesday.

Salman Ali Agha’s team were heading towards a shock loss against the Netherlands before a lower-order rescue act took them over the line on Saturday.

A few hours later, the USA nearly sprang a surprise against defending champions India when they met in the group’s second fixture, but were unable to register what could have been the biggest shock in the tournament’s history.

Now, both teams meet in a crucial second game that could shape their fate in the tournament.

Pakistan are renowned for throwing form and predictions out of the window, and the USA will look to capitalise on their opponents’ unpredictability to get their first points of the tournament.

What happened in the last Pakistan vs USA game?

The USA pulled off one of the biggest shocks in the T20 World Cup’s history when they beat the 2009 champions in a thrilling match in 2024.

The win, which came in a super over after scores were tied following the regulation 20 overs, sent shockwaves through the cricket world.

Pakistan’s star-studded team posted a meagre total of 159 in their 20 overs, which the USA equalled on the last ball of their innings, taking the game to a super over.

Team USA’s calmness trumped Pakistan’s nerves as they rewrote history books.

The 2024 tournament cohosts had never played Pakistan in any format of the game prior to the match.

Arsenal star’s World Cup in doubt due to mysterious injury

Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino may be a doubt for the rest of the club season and perhaps even the 2026 World Cup in the summer due to a mysterious injury.

Gunners manager Mikel Arteta explained that Merino’s injury is a rare one, so there’s not a clear idea of when the Spain international will be back to fitness, though for the time being it is being treated as pretty serious.

Numerous outlets have reported that Merino is almost certainly out for the rest of the season, meaning he’ll miss the title run-in with Arsenal, while his participation at the World Cup could also be in doubt.

This will be a blow for fans of the Spanish national team as they start making their own preparations for the tournament and looking into how to buy Spain World Cup tickets as their country aims to lift the trophy this summer.

What Mikel Arteta has said about Mikel Merino’s injury

As quoted by Arsenal’s official site recently, Arteta made it clear that Merino’s injury looked serious and would require a procedure.

Describing it as a “big blow”, Arteta said: “He (Merino) needs to go through a procedure, which is not always positive. He’s a big player for us, a player that has such versatility and capacity to compete in various positions, and that’s a big blow.

“It’s a very rare injury so we have to wait and see once we have the surgery, how that reacts daily, obviously monitor it throughout the week for the surgery and see.

“I know Mikel is going to do absolutely everything that he possibly can to come back as quick as possible. But as well you have to respect the healing process and the fact that obviously it’s an injury that is quite rare.”

Mikel Merino will be missed by Arsenal and Spain

Anyone who’s watched him closely will surely agree that Merino is one of the most underrated footballers in today’s game.

The 29-year-old has put in a series of superb displays whether playing in midfield or as a makeshift striker for Arsenal, and he has a surprisingly good scoring record.

With 15 goals in 77 appearances for Arsenal, and eight goals in his last ten games for Spain, Merino has shown how valuable he can be as he really starts to establish himself quite late on in his career.

Spain have fellow Arsenal midfielder Martin Zubimendi as another key part of their midfield, as well as other big names like Manchester City’s Rodri and Barcelona’s Pedri, so they certainly aren’t short of other quality options in that area of the pitch.

At the same time, however, Merino offers some unique qualities that a lot of others can’t, and Arsenal fans will have to hope he can perhaps return earlier than expected, and that his absence doesn’t prove too costly as they compete for the Premier League and Carabao Cup in the months to come.
