Andoni Iraola has made it clear why the Liverpool job was too big to turn down.
After being confirmed as the club’s new head coach on a two-year deal, the former Bournemouth boss spoke openly about the pull of Anfield, the quality of the squad and his relationship with sporting director Richard Hughes.
Liverpool confirmed his appointment on Thursday, following the dismissal of Arne Slot.
Iraola’s message was simple: this was not just about taking another Premier League job. This was about Liverpool.
He said he identifies with the football and values of the squad, and that the chance to coach top players gives him the chance to fight for major titles.
That is exactly the kind of ambition Liverpool fans will want to hear after a difficult period of uncertainty.
The new Liverpool boss said, as reported by Ben Jacobs:
“I identify with the football and the values of the squad, and we are all in for this year…
“It helps a lot that, on the other side of the table, there is someone you have worked with [in Richard Hughes]. We were one year together.
“But this case it’s about Liverpool, that’s what really attracted me. I am looking forward to getting all the information so I can better understand the club.
“Liverpool gives me the chance to coach top players, and top players give you the chance to fight for titles.
“When you arrive to a [new] place, you can’t promise everything, but I understand where I am coming and what is expected. I am ready for the challenge.”
The Richard Hughes connection is important too. Hughes worked with Iraola at Bournemouth, having helped bring him to English football in 2023.
That existing relationship should make the early weeks easier, especially when Liverpool need quick decisions on transfers, staff and squad planning.
The Guardian reported that negotiations moved quickly because of that connection, with Iraola expected to bring members of his Bournemouth staff to Anfield.
Tactically, this appointment makes sense. Iraola built Bournemouth into one of the Premier League’s most intense, aggressive and entertaining sides.
He guided Bournemouth to a sixth-place finish and Europa League qualification in 2025/26, after finishing ninth the season before.
That is a serious achievement, and it explains why Liverpool believe his pressing style can fit their identity.
Still, this is a huge step up. Managing Bournemouth well is one thing. Managing Liverpool, with global pressure and title expectations, is completely different.
Iraola admitted he cannot promise everything immediately, but he understands where he is and what is expected. That honesty is refreshing.

Liverpool finished fifth in the Premier League table despite spending substantial sums last summer. The Netherlands manager was criticised heavily for the lack of identity and playing style last season. He was criticised for his handling of young players as well. Slot seemed uninterested in working with young players at Liverpool and barely gave them opportunities.
Newly appointed Liverpool manager Iraola has already shown a desire to invest in young players and has promised to work closely with them during pre-season.
He said to the official LFC website: “Also the World Cup being there, we will have a chance to work especially with some of the young players. Because a lot of senior players being out and arriving later because of the World Cup, I think it gives us the chance to know better the players from the Academy, some of the players that have been on loan. They will be an important part of the first part of pre-season, the American tour. And I think in that way it works very well for us because it will give us a lot of information before we really take decisions before we start the season.”

Liverpool have multiple talented young players, and they will not want to lose them in the coming months. If they can get the best out of the youngsters, it could help them build a formidable team for the future.
Iraola’s comments on the young players already show that he is a better fit than Slot as Liverpool’s manager. Liverpool have always managed to nurture talented young players into stars, but that was not the case under Slot. They will now look to properly groom the club’s young talent and build a pathway from the academy to the first team once again.

One imagines Iraola himself might already be thinking about his Liverpool transfers for this summer, as there could be some sense in raiding his old club for star names who could be being eyed up by a host of other big teams anyway.

After 13 Premier League goals at the age of just 19, Eli Junior Kroupi is sure to be one of the most sought-after young talents on the market this summer, with Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain already linked with him by Foot Mercato and others.
Still, Liverpool also have issues up front, with Kroupi looking like he could potentially be ideal to fill in in a number of roles where Iraola will surely feel the Reds could improve.

The Frenchman could provide LFC with an option as a central striker, perhaps giving the club an upgrade on expensive flop Alexander Isak, who has struggled with injury problems during his time at Anfield so far.
Kroupi could also give Liverpool an upgrade on Cody Gakpo on the left-hand side, while there’s generally the need for more depth in that department as Hugo Ekitike is set to miss much of the rest of this year with a serious injury.
Key to making Iraola’s Bournemouth tick in midfield, Alex Scott has shown himself to be another superb talent in this Cherries squad.

The 22-year-old has been linked with Manchester United, though the Athletic also report that Bournemouth are keen to tie him down to a new contract, so his situation will surely be one to watch in the weeks and months ahead.
There’ll surely be some question marks about this Liverpool midfield right now, with someone like Scott perhaps an upgrade on Alexis Mac Allister, whose form took a real dip in the season just gone, while Curtis Jones’ future could be in doubt as he comes closer to the end of his contract.
A real all-rounder in the middle of the park, Scott could be a useful addition to get this Liverpool team playing the kind of football Iraola wants.
Another of Bournemouth’s most impressive performers this season was Adrien Truffert, who joined in summer 2025 to replace the departing Milos Kerkez.
After performing so well at the Vitality Stadium, could Truffert now replace Kerkez again? It might not be a top priority for the Reds, but it would also be fair to say that the Hungary international hasn’t made the most convincing start to life on Merseyside.
Perhaps a reunion between Kerkez and Iraola could work out well, but it also looks like Truffert could simply be the superior player.
With Andrew Robertson also leaving at the end of his contract, there’s surely a case for bringing in more depth on that left-hand side anyway, so Kerkez and Truffert competing for that spot could be an ideal scenario.

The pundit, speaking to Hajper, as quoted by the Metro, believes Manchester City will win the league again even without Pep Guardiola as manager.
Heskey has his top six as 1. Man City 2. Man Utd 3. Liverpool 4. Arsenal 5. Aston Villa and 6. Newcastle, so it could be another nightmare ahead for Chelsea and Tottenham, who would both hope to be in there.
“Manchester City will be champions with or without Pep Guardiola,” Heskey said. “They look good now but they’re really going to come together as a team next season.”
He added: “Top four I’ll say Man City, Man United, Liverpool and Arsenal. Then Aston Villa fifth and Newcastle United in sixth.”

It will be interesting to see if next season’s final table looks anything like this, but strange things can happen in football.
Heskey’s old club Liverpool won the title in 2024/25 but then dropped to fifth in the season just gone, so perhaps Arsenal could quite conceivably drop from first to fourth.
It seems foolish to rule out City bouncing back even without Guardiola, as they have so many world class players in their squad, though who they appoint to replace the legendary Spaniard will also surely be crucial.
Chelsea would hope to be up there at least challenging for the top four again under new manager Xabi Alonso, while Tottenham also need to be getting back there or thereabouts after finishing 17th two years in a row.

Iraola did a hugely impressive job at Bournemouth and there was a lot of interest in him before Liverpool then accelerated their approach after deciding to part ways with Slot.
We were informed of Iraola being a top target for Chelsea and Manchester United, while there was also genuine interest from Crystal Palace in an ambitious move.
Still, a big move like LFC makes more sense for Iraola, and it will be interesting to see what kind of impact he can make at Anfield.
The 43-year-old is not walking into the easiest situation there, with experienced players such as Mohamed Salah, Andrew Robertson, and Ibrahima Konate all leaving this summer.
Iraola will surely need a lot of help in the transfer market if he is to get Liverpool back challenging for the title again, as a few other players in this current squad also surely need replacing.
Virgil van Dijk is ageing and past his best, while last summer’s signings Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak, Jeremie Frimpong, and Milos Kerkez were all pretty underwhelming in their first year at the club.

Interestingly, it seems it was Iraola who insisted on only signing a relatively short contract with the Merseyside giants, as that’s how he “operates” at all of his clubs, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

Iraola looks set to be the man to come in and replace Arne Slot after his recent LFC exit, but should fans have any cause for concern about the 43-year-old being reluctant to commit for the long term?

Jacobs insists this is just how Iraola operates, and it seems Liverpool themselves have been content to go along with that, though it will be interesting to see if this becomes a problem further down the line.
Bournemouth would surely have preferred to have more control over Iraola’s future this summer, but his contract ran down, allowing him to move on, so perhaps something similar could happen after two years at Anfield.
On the other hand, if Iraola does well with the Reds, they will surely get the opportunity to extend his contract and persuade him to carry on with what has the potential to be an exciting project.
There aren’t that many bigger clubs out there, so it would arguably only be the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona who’d be tempting for Iraola to leave Liverpool for, if they were to ever show an interest in him.
