Gian Piero Gasperini is only focused on Roma’s next game against Milan and not in the title race and reveals Evan Ferguson will remain out of action for ‘one or two weeks’ due to an ankle injury.

Gasperini previewed Roma’s away game at Milan during a pre-match press conference on the eve of the game on Saturday.

The Giallorossi secured a 2-1 win over Parma mid-week. Republic of Ireland international Ferguson was subbed off early in the first half due to an ankle problem, and he’ll remain out of action for at least one week.

“Dovbyk is improving. Ferguson has an ankle sprain and will remain out of action for one or two weeks,” Gasperini said via Sky Sport.

“As for Bailey, we accelerated a bit. I didn’t think he’d play so much after months of inactivity. But it’s just about shape because he has effectively recovered from his injury.”

Roma are the Serie A table leaders alongside Napoli, while Milan sit fourth, level on 18 points with Inter. Can Roma remain in the title race for the entire season?

“I’m not taking part in these discussions about the Scudetto or the Champions League,” Gasp replied.

“Right now, I’m focused on how Roma will approach the match against Milan. We’ve both had an excellent start. Then, like everyone, I think Inter and Napoli began the season as the favourites. Our goal is to test ourselves at San Siro against a strong team.

“In terms of points, it’s hard to ask for more. The goal is to keep improving, building a solid team structure and becoming increasingly competitive. We hope the points we earn will be effective.”

How will Roma try to stop Luka Modric, probably Milan’s best player so far this season? Could Gasperini use Bryan Cristante as an attacking midfielder?

“It suits our style of play, but only Cristante,” said the Roma boss.

“Pellegrini has done well there too. I don’t know if we’ll play that way. Modric isn’t easy to contain, but we have to focus on our own game plan.

Gasperini explains Roma rotations

“Roma have also scored through several different players. It’s a sign of teamwork and the ability to find goals in different ways,” Gasperini continued.

“A team that creates more chances will naturally have more players on the scoresheet.

“Midfield and defence have been quite similar in every game. It’s always the same players, just like the wing-backs. We’ve rotated more up front because we are looking for different solutions. At the beginning, Dybala and Bailey were not available. But my initial goal was to give solidity to the team’s core and then integrate others.

“I always use five substitutions even if I don’t like them. It’s a different kind of football now,” added the Roma coach.

“There’s no more late-game fatigue; matches used to be more enjoyable, and you had to know how to last for the full 90 minutes. Now it feels more like basketball. Even if I don’t like it, I always use five substitutions.”

Matias Soulé has been one of Roma’s best players so far.

“He is doing well and he’s the one who is playing more,” Gasperini argued.

“He burns energy by sprinting and dribbling past opponents. He always puts in high-level performances. When he’s subbed off, it’s never by demerit.”

Lastly, Gasperini was asked why Lorenzo Pellegrini is not a regular starter, but the Roma coach replied firmly: “He plays and does well. What’s the problem? Take the good of what we have, and let’s stop talking about starters and not starters. Who would you take out? If you tell me Pellegrini has to play, you should also tell me who should come out.”

Genoa confirm that Patrick Vieira is no longer their head coach and will be replaced by Roberto Murgita and Domenico Criscito against Sassuolo.

Genoa confirmed Vieira’s exit with a statement on Saturday.

The Grifone sit at the rock bottom of the table with three points in nine games and still no victories in Serie A this season.

Football Italia already reported this morning that Vieira and Genoa had decided to part company.

Genoa also confirmed that Murgita and Criscito would replace Vieira in the next away game at Sassuolo.

It is believed, however, that the Grifone will be looking for a new coach going forward and Paolo Vanoli was one of those sounded out by the club in recent hours.

Vieira had replaced Alberto Gilardino as Genoa’s head coach barely a year ago, in November 2024.

The Arsenal and France legend won 10 of his 37 games in charge of Genoa, drawing 12 and losing 15.

Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri practically confirmed that Rafael Leao and Christopher Nkunku would start against Roma tomorrow, but admits it’s ‘not easy’ to ‘enter Leao’s mind.’

Milan host Roma at San Siro on Sunday evening, in the big match of Serie A Round 10.

The Rossoneri come to this fixture on the back of two consecutive draws, while Roma are the table leaders and have the least-beaten defence in the league.

The Giallorossi share the top spot of the table with Napoli and according to Allegri, they deserve to be in such a position.

“Yes, they have only conceded four goals, and they always give the feeling that they can score,” the Rossoneri boss said at a press conference via Milannews.

“I don’t know if they’ll remain at the top, but I know we need to get consistent results.”

Allegri will reunite with his ex-Juventus star Paulo Dybala tomorrow.

“His qualities are well-known. He arrived in Turin when he was 21, and he has grown a lot. He has an excellent scoring average, he knows how to play football, and he rarely makes mistakes when he shoots on target,” said the Milan coach.

“Soulé is also improving. Roma also have Pellegrini and Cristante. They are not the table leaders by chance.

“It’s always tough to face Gasperini’s teams. It has often happened to me to play against Juric and Gasperini’s teams in quick succession. The game in Bergamo on Tuesday was the most physical game of the season.

Allegri tells Milan which error they must avoid vs. Roma

“The technical management of the ball will be fundamental tomorrow,” continued Allegri.

“If you make too many errors with the ball, the opponents gain strength, as happened in Bergamo. Tomorrow, we’ll have to be good at managing the ball.”

Allegri confirmed that Pulisic and Santiago Gimenez would miss the game, which means Leao and Nkunku are likely to start in attack.

“I’m curious too. Sometimes one finds unexpected solutions. Both play football well, so they can do well together,” said Allegri.

“It’s not easy to enter Leao’s mind. He did great things in the first month, but then got injured. Now he’s improving. He is still not 100% fit, but it’s important that he’s made himself available with a certain attitude.”

Luka Modric will once again start in the middle of the park for Milan.

“He’s okay. In the first half in Bergamo, we made many technical mistakes, so we had to run behind them. Luka has improved; he’s a point of reference for the team.”

Lastly, Allegri spoke about Luciano Spalletti’s appointment as the new Juventus coach and the race for the title.

“I wish him good luck. Napoli and Inter remain the favourites [for the Scudetto], considering their squads. Then there is a group fighting for the top four. Milan, Juventus, Roma, Lazio. Bologna are doing excellent things too, like Como. In the end, the best will win.

“We should never lose sight of our objective, which is to return to the Champions League. We need balance, and we must not get discouraged after two consecutive draws. We need consistency to get to March fighting for the top four. The first months of the season are fundamental to creating the foundations for the second half of the campaign. We must not think, but do.”

Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri is confident that Christian Pulisic will return in an away game at Parma next week, but is unsure the American star will join the USMNT for the November break.

Allegri spoke at a press conference on Saturday on the eve of a Serie A match against Roma.

Pulisic suffered an injury while on international duty in October and hasn’t yet returned to action since.

Allegri provided the latest team news ahead of tomorrow’s match. Pulisic will not be available, but is expected to return to action next week.

“Leao is fit, Tomori will hardly be available even if, luckily, big problems have been ruled out,” said Allegri via Milannews.

“Pulisic should return against Parma, while it’s more difficult for Rabiot. Let’s see if Gimenez will be there or will return against Parma. Estupinan is fine, Jashari has only trained once, so it’s unlikely that he’ll be on the bench tomorrow.

“Let’s see if Pulisic will be back in Parma and then join his national team,” Allegri continued.

“We are in contact with all the national team coaches to tell them our players’ conditions.”

Allegri’s trust in Nkunku

Gazzetta dello Sport reported in October that Milan director Giorgio Furlani was in talks with US Soccer directors, hoping to convince them to leave Pulisic out of the USMNT squad for the next international friendlies.

With Gimenez not fully fit and Pulisic out of action, Christophern Nkunku is likely to start in the Milan attack tomorrow.

“Nkunku is fit and tomorrow he might be involved,” Allegri confirmed.

“He is a player of great technique, and we expect a lot from him. I think he can [play as a striker], just like Leao, but it is also possible to play without a centre-forward.”

The Tuscans haven’t yet won a game in Serie A this term and tomorrow they host Lecce at the Stadio Franchi.

Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Inter have resumed interest in Genoa midfielder Morten Frendrup for the January transfer window, but Roma have already made a request for the 24-year-old.

According to Gazzetta, Roma have also shown interest in Frendrup by asking for the midfielder’s price tag.

Ex-Italy star Antonio Di Natale predicts that Dusan Vlahovic will score 20 goals under Luciano Spalletti at Juventus.

Spalletti was unveiled as the new Juventus coach on Friday. Di Natale played under the Tuscan tactician at Empoli and Udinese and is excited to see his former coach return to action.

“Spalletti could not say no to Juventus and I’m convinced he’ll bring them back to the top,” the former Italy international told Gazzetta.

Spalletti said he would continue to rely on Vlahovic as long as he shows the right attitude, and Di Natale expects s big response from the Serbian.

“I expect around 20 goals from Vlahovic, and both David and Openda can get close to those numbers. Spalletti brings out the best in his forwards by working a lot on their movements, on the synchronisation between the lines and on analysing the skill sets of the defenders they’ll be facing.

“I’m convinced the fans will gradually fall in love with Luciano,” continued Di Natale.

“He’s a coach who combines attractive football with success. People who go to the stadium want to win, not to see a circus.”

Spalletti will make his debut as the Juventus coach today, but is expected to confirm a three-man defence against Cremonese.

“Quite rightly, Luciano has made it clear that he’ll give continuity to the work done by Tudor. In the future, I hope to see Juventus playing with a 4-3-3 formation and a front-three of Conceiçao, Vlahovic and Yildiz.”

Spalletti said Juventus can still aim for the title, and Di Natale agrees: “Yes, the season has just begun. It will take work and a bit of patience. When Luciano has the chance to work on the pitch every day, he makes things better and achieves his goals.”

 

Arrigo Sacchi feels Como will cause trouble for Napoli today, as Cesc Fabregas studied at Barcelona and Arsenal, the ‘best football universities in Europe.’

Sacchi previewed today’s Serie A match between Como and Napoli in his latest interview with Gazzetta dello Sport.

The ex-Italy coach is particularly excited by Como’s playing style and expects to see an open game at the Stadio Maradona today.

Sacchi: Fabregas ‘absorbed a real taste for the game’ at Arsenal and Barcelona

“I don’t know Fabregas personally, but I see the way Como play,” he said.

“He comes from two important schools, and he studied at the best football universities in Europe: Arsenal and Barcelona. He has absorbed a real taste for the game. When your teachers are Arsene Wenger and Pep Guardiola, it’s hard to go wrong. Just look at how Como players move on the pitch. They always know what to do, which spaces to occupy and how to get out of tricky situations. Would you say, watching Como play, that it’s a small provincial team? No. And whose merit is that, if not the coach’s?”

Sacchi expects an aggressive Como against Napoli, but the defending Serie A champions will see Scott McTominay and Rasmus Hojlund return to the starting line-up.

“Fabregas will order a very aggressive pressing game, because he’ll try not to let the opponent build up play,” said Sacchi.

“Como play with a high defensive line, and they’ll need to be careful because Napoli have players who are great at attacking the spaces. I’m thinking of McTominay, a midfielder of rare effectiveness, and the speed of Hojlund. I expect an open match.

Sacchi: Como ‘won’t park the bus’ against Napoli

“If you think Como will go there to park the bus, like many teams in our league would, you’re mistaken,” Sacchi concluded.

“Fabregas has quality midfielders, he has a pure talent like Nico Paz, he loves to exchange quick passes, weave the play and then look for the through ball. Napoli must be careful not to leave themselves exposed.”

Como are just two points below a Champions League placement, having earned 16 points in the opening nine games of the season.

Napoli, on the other hand, are the joint-table leaders alongside Roma.

The Partenopei have earned 21 points, five more than Como, in nine games, but lost two of their last five league games, while Como are unbeaten in the same period with three draws and two wins.

Former Juventus coach Fabio Capello doubts that the Bianconeri will fight for the Serie A title under new coach Luciano Spalletti and says the Old Lady should not ‘waste’ money in January and only buy a ‘real solution.’

Spalletti was unveiled as the new Juventus coach on Friday, and the Certaldo-born coach said he hopes to be involved in the race for the title this season.

Juventus are currently 7th in the Serie A table, three points below a Champions League spot and six points below the leaders Napoli and Roma.

Capello: Napoli and Inter favourite for Serie A title

“Trying to fight for the title is clearly a great challenge for him and for the Bianconeri, even though personally I don’t consider Juventus to be on the same level as Napoli and Inter,” Capello wrote in his latest column for Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I put those two teams among the ones competing for the Scudetto, while I believe that for Juventus, the most important goal remains qualifying for the Champions League.

“If, however, the Old Lady manages to fight for the title, then we’ll have to praise Spalletti and give him credit for once again proving himself to be a great coach and an exceptional motivator.”

Juventus sacked Igor Tudor on Monday after three consecutive defeats and an eight-game winless streak, so how can Spalletti make the Bianconeri title contenders this term?

“The question is how,” said Capello.

“Through different formations, for example, or through alternative approaches that allow the players to perform at their very best? Let’s be clear. Having an effective impact from Wednesday to Saturday is by no means easy for a coach. It’s a difficult task, and it’s important to understand what kind of boost Wednesday’s result and his arrival really represent, whether it’s something temporary or lasting.”

Capello: Juventus have already wasted enough money

Lastly, Capello gave a transfer suggestion to Juventus and their new coach: “Juventus will need to understand what kind of reinforcements will be available on the market. The key thing is not to waste money on a quick fix instead of a real solution. They’ve already wasted enough money in Turin.”

Spalletti has signed an eight-month contract, and Juventus have an option to extend until 2027 regardless of whether he qualifies or not for the Champions League.

Liverpool could reportedly still miss out on the transfer of Marc Guehi despite strong links with the Crystal Palace central defender for some time.

The Reds notably tried to sign Guehi in the summer, but a move fell through late on as Palace pulled the plug on the deal due to not having time to sign a replacement, as per BBC Sport‘s report at the time.

Guehi is coming towards the end of his contract at Selhurst Park, meaning other clubs will likely join the race to snap him up on a free transfer.

One of those clubs is Inter Milan, according to Gazzetta dello Sport, even if Indy Kaila only just reported in the last few days that Guehi still has his heart set on a move to Liverpool.

Gazetta’s report now suggests a potential complication in the Guehi transfer saga, with Inter ready to try moving for him in January, with the option of Yann Bisseck moving to Palace as part of the deal.

Could Liverpool miss out on Marc Guehi?

One imagines that kind of deal would appeal to Palace a lot, as it would mean they can avoid losing Guehi on a free transfer, and land a decent player in return, while it would also mean they don’t have to see the England international moving to another Premier League club and strengthening a rival.

It will be interesting to see if Liverpool can remain in a strong position on Guehi after coming so close to signing him in the summer, or if this saga has gone back to square one, as it were.

Anselmino surely looks like a better option than Chelsea’s current centre-backs, with Trevoh Chalobah and Tosin Adarabioyo not looking particularly convincing so far this season.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot is currently safe in his job at Anfield despite the team’s awful recent run of form, according to reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The Dutch tactician won the Premier League title in his first season in charge last term, but his second campaign has got off to a really difficult start.

Slot is seemingly still being backed by Liverpool, however, with Romano insisting in a post on his YouTube channel that the Reds have no plans to make a change or consider any potential replacement targets.

Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on Manchester United’s transfer interest in Atletico Madrid midfielder Conor Gallagher.

The Red Devils have a genuine interest in the former Chelsea midfielder, though it seems it’s not yet certain if he’ll be leaving Atletico.

According to Romano on his YouTube channel, Man Utd have a number of midfielders on their radar at the moment, but Gallagher is one of them, and has been on their radar since August.

Gallagher has had a mixed spell in Spanish football, and it could make sense for him to look for a move back to the Premier League.

The England international was a top performer for Chelsea, with former Blues manager Mauricio Pochettino previously describing him as “priceless”, as quoted by BBC Sport.

Fabrizio Romano on Man United’s interest in Conor Gallagher

Discussing the latest on United’s pursuit of Gallagher, Romano said: “I told you several times that Man United want to add a midfielder, but in this moment to go for a very expensive midfielder in the January transfer window might be difficult. Players like (Carlos) Baleba maybe are not even available. Same for Angelo Stiller and then there could be opportunities – a name that Manchester United considered in the summer transfer window final days was Connor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid.

“Conor Gallagher remains an option in case Atletico Madrid decide to open doors to a loan move. At the moment Gallagher is only focused on Atletico Madrid. Manchester United’s interest is genuine since August. But Gallagher is one of the options they have in case it could be an opportunity on loan, in case it can be a typical general deal.

“So we will be following the situation. But Gallagher is a name we have to keep there.”

Who else is on Man United’s list of midfielder transfer targets?

As reported for the Daily Briefing earlier today, one top target for United is Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson.

Still, it makes sense for MUFC to also keep someone like Gallagher in mind as he might be more readily available due to his situation at Atletico.

Anderson, by contrast, could cost as much as £70m, with Forest not keen to let the talented 22-year-old go.

Manchester United are ready to step up their efforts to sign Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson this January, as first reported here for the Daily Briefing.

Sources have told me that Man Utd are really keen on Anderson, though they would face paying as much as £70m for the England international.

It is also anticipated that they will face particularly strong competition from Manchester City, while Chelsea and Newcastle United will also be names to watch in the race for his signature.

Anderson has shone for Forest and is also increasingly impressing as a regular in the England national team, so it seems inevitable that he’ll get himself a big move at some point.

Where next for Elliot Anderson?

Anderson is viewed as ideal for United, with key figures at the club all agreeing that he could be a fine addition to their squad.

The Red Devils have obvious issues in midfield, with the 22-year-old looking ideal to come in as a long-term replacement for the ageing Casemiro and an upgrade on the unconvincing Manuel Ugarte.

As one source told me: “United see Anderson as a perfect option and a long-term investment, though they could also accelerate their efforts for him this January. There is a unanimous feeling among the directors, Ruben Amorim, and his coaching staff that Anderson would be a great addition in that position.”

Patrick Vieira is set to leave Genoa, so Grifone legend Domenico Criscito is expected to go on the bench against Sassuolo on Monday, while the club has also sounded out Paolo Vanoli.

Vieira and Genoa are set to part company ahead of a Serie A match against Sassuolo on Monday.

We had already reported that Genoa had run out of patience with the French legend, but Genoa waited for Vieira to make the first step. The two parties will now discuss the details of their separation, but the decision has already been made by both sides.

Sources tell me that ex-Genoa defender Domenico Criscito, a club legend, will lead the training session today.

After the next Serie A fixture, Genoa could name a new boss, unless the new coach secures a convincing win in Sassuolo.

Ex-Torino boss Vanoli has already been sounded out, but the final decision on the new coach taking over after the Sassuolo game has yet to be made.

 

Rasmus Hojlund returns to Napoli‘s starting XI for a Serie A match against Cesc Fabregas’ Como at the Stadio Maradona.

It kicks off at 18:00 CET (17:00 GMT).

The Partenopei are looking for their fifth consecutive home win across all competitions, which would allow them to take a three-point lead over Roma at the top of the table ahead of the Giallorossi’s match against Milan on Sunday.

Romelu Lukaku, Mirko Contini, Alex Meret and Kevin De Bruyne are injured, but Matteo Politano is available after suffering a slight injury in the previous round, and Hojlund will return to the starting XI, according to Sky and other prominent sources.

Como have travelled to Naples without Sergi Roberto and Alberto Dossena.

Gazzetta dello Sport (page seven) reports that Spalletti will pick a 3-5-2 system with Dusan Vlahovic and Lois Openda in attack, while Filip Kostic will start his second consecutive match on the left wing.

According to Sky and Tuttosport, Francisco Conceiçao will start instead, leaving Kostic on the bench.

Juan Cabal, Arek Milink, Gleison Bremer and Carlo Pinsoglio are unavailable for the Bianconeri.

Arsenal are currently conceding just 0.25 goals per game in all competitions this season – a better average than the Chelsea team of 2004/05.

That legendary Jose Mourinho side strolled to victory in the Premier League title race that year, conceding a record low number of just 15 goals in 38 games.

The previous record had been Arsenal’s, when they conceded just 17 goals in the 1998/99 campaign, but it looks like the Gunners could reclaim the record if they carry on performing as well as they have this season.

Chelsea’s average ended up being 0.55 per game in that memorable Mourinho campaign, but Arsenal would better that if they can keep shutting teams out like they have so far.

That’s a big if, though, as it would take something pretty special for them to maintain this level of consistency.

Arsenal looking to build on perfect October

Arsenal take on Burnley away from home in the Premier League today for their first game of November, and they’ll be looking to build on a memorable October.

Remarkably, Mikel Arteta’s side won all six of their six games last month without conceding a single goal – the first time any top flight English club has ever done that.

Arsenal will be favourites against Burnley, but there are no easy games in the Premier League, and they’ll surely give up a goal or two eventually.

Much has been made of Arsenal being overly reliant on goals from set pieces this season, but Manchester City are even more reliant on Erling Haaland.

The Norway international has been in fantastic form this season, scoring 15 goals in his first 12 games in all competitions.

In the Premier League, he has 11 in 9 games, and stats show that’s 65% of Man City’s total goals scored.

See below as Squawka claim Haaland’s goals account for almost two thirds of the goals scored by Pep Guardiola’s side in the league so far this season, which is impressive, but perhaps far from ideal if he ever has an occasional bad game, as we saw with City’s defeat away to Aston Villa last weekend…

By contrast, Arsenal have scored 56% of their goals from set pieces, according to WhoScored, so even if it’s clearly something they’re relying on a lot, it’s not quite the same as City’s reliance on Haaland.

Are Manchester City too much of a one-man team?

City weren’t at their best last season as they slipped to third in the Premier League table, and at the time it seemed like the long-term injury to Rodri was one of the major factors affecting their form.

Still, they now seem to be overly reliant on Haaland more than anyone, with other star names like Phil Foden and Jeremy Doku arguably just not delivering enough end-product consistently in this MCFC attack.

It’s hard to see where else the goals could come from in Guardiola’s squad, as he no longer has the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan to rely on like he did in the past.

Arsenal – too one dimensional?

At the same time, Arsenal could really do with an elite goal-scorer like Haaland in their side, with Viktor Gyokeres only scoring three Premier League goals so far.

The Gunners rely a lot on Gabriel Magalhaes heading in their corners and free-kicks, and it’s perhaps hard to see them sustaining that over an entire campaign.

Slot, however, insists he still talks with the Liverpool hierarchy and they still seem to be giving him their backing as the club’s manager, just like they did last season.

Slot has surely earned himself a bit more time after the success of last season, even if things are proving a lot trickier for him this term.

The Dutch tactician did tremendous work to guide Liverpool to the Premier League title in his first season in charge, and he surely has it in him to turn the team’s current slump around.

The report also claims that Zirkzee is not agitating over a permanent move and is open to an initial loan move to increase his chances of making it into the World Cup squad.

Inter and Napoli are among the clubs who are keen on a future move for 20-year-old Cagliari talent Riyad Idrissi, who has already attracted offers from the likes of Parma, Torino and Udinese.

Idrissi has been a revelation for Cagliari, who have collected nine points in the opening nine games of the season, but are winless in the last five, with just two points earned in this period.

There is little doubt about the qualities that the 20-year-old Idrissi offers. He is destined for a career at the very top. 

The youngster has already played a full season under new Cagliari head coach Fabio Pisacane when he was in charge of the club’s U19 set-up. He chipped in with four goals and four assists from 33 appearances at full-back that season. 

Idrissi spent the last campaign on loan with Modena, and with his performances, attracted the interest of Parma in January. Sporting director Tommaso Giulini flat-out refused to part ways with the Cagliari talent. 

This season, however, could be the one in which Idrissi established himself as a big talent in the top flight. In the meantime, Cagliari have rejected offers from Torino, Udinese and Genoa. 

There are still big clubs keeping an eye over Idrissi, though, especially Inter and Napoli.

Pre-match reports indicate that Stanislav Lobotka will be back and available for selection again when Napoli host Como in Serie A on Saturday evening. 

Conte gets Lobotka back in time for Napoli vs. Como

Lobotka has been unavailable since the beginning of the latest international break after picking up a muscular injury during his side’s 2-1 win over Genoa on October 5. 

The 30-year-old has since missed the last three rounds of Serie A fixtures, one game in the Champions League and Slovenia’s last two World Cup qualifiers. Billy Gilmour has been Antonio Conte’s go-to replacement over the last few weeks. 

Lobotka is now expected to return to the matchday squad when the Partenopei take on Como in Serie A on Saturday afternoon, kicking off at 17.00 GMT. According to reports from Sky Sport Italia, it is likely that he starts on the bench for his first game back. 

Pre-match reports indicate that there could also be a return to the starting line-up for Rasmus Hojlund, who marked his return from injury off the bench against Lecce on Tuesday evening. 

The Partenopei are expected to be without Lorenzo Lucca, Alex Meret, Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku. 

Luciano Spalletti is due to take charge of his first match as Juventus head coach on Saturday, but will have his work cut out for him as both Kenan Yildiz and Lloyd Kelly have been ruled out. Here is how the Old Lady could line up in their absence. 

Juventus will travel to Cremona to take on Davide Nicola’s side in Serie A at 19.45 GMT on Saturday evening. This will be Spalletti’s first match in charge since replacing Igor Tudor as Bianconeri head coach on Thursday evening. 

Spalletti, thus far, has had just one training session to work with his players following his appointment on Thursday evening, and is therefore not expected to make any major changes to Juve’s recent shape or system. 

During his first press conference on Friday, Spalletti discussed the fact that he will look to deploy a back four in the future, but that he is likely to stick with a back three on Saturday, even if he only has three senior centre-backs available with Kelly and Bremer out injured. 

That means that Pierre Kalulu, Federico Gatti and Daniele Rugani are practically guaranteed to start, with Next Gen defenders Pedro Felipe and Filippo Scaglia called in to make up the numbers. 

There will be an enforced change further up the pitch, though, as Yildiz has also been left at home. 

Francisco Conceicao could come back into the starting line-up to play alongside Lois Openda in an attacking trident that will likely be led by Dusan Vlahovic at centre-forward. 

Khephren Thuram is also back in the squad after being left out against Udinese on Wednesday. It remains to be seen whether he will be thrown straight back into the starting line-up, with Teun Koopmeiners, Manuel Locatelli and Weston McKennie also available for selection.

Luciano Spalletti has confirmed his first Juventus squad following his appointment as head coach on Thursday, and has been forced to leave out two key first-team players in Kenan Yildiz and Lloyd Kelly. 

Spalletti was appointed head coach of Juventus on Thursday, signing an initial short-term contract until the end of the 2025-26 season. He replaced Igor Tudor, who had gone eight matches without a win across all competitions at the end of his tenure, had lost all of his last three and had not seen his side score in any of his last four. 

Spalletti, who signed his contracts on Thursday and got to work in Continassa on Friday, will have an away trip against Cremonese on Saturday evening to begin his Bianconeri tenure. 

Spalletti has named a squad of 22 travelling players for the Cremonese match, but has left star attacker Yildiz at home.

The Turkish gem has recently been suffering with patellar tendinopathy, sometimes referred to as jumper’s knee in his left leg. This is effectively an inflammation that affects the tendon beneath the kneecap. He has been wearing a bandage around the affected knee in all of his recent Old Lady outings. 

That issue kept him out of the starting line-up for Tudor’s final match in charge of Juventus, a 1-0 defeat against Lazio last weekend, but he returned and played the full 90 minutes during the 3-1 win over Udinese on Wednesday night. 

As per Ilbianconero.com, Yildiz will be left at home on this occasion so that he can rest his knee. 

There is less cause for concern regarding centre-back Kelly, who has reportedly been suffering with back pain and is not expected to be sidelined for an extended period. 

There is a boost for the Juventus midfield department, though, as Khephren Thuram, who missed the 3-1 win over Udinese, has returned and is in contention to feature.

The Allianz Stadium, the regular home of Juventus, is among the potential host venues for both the 2028 and 2029 Europa League and Conference League finals, UEFA have confirmed. 

On Friday, UEFA revealed a list of member associations who have officially expressed an interest in hosting its club competition finals in 2028 and 2029, i.e the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League finals. 

The host venues for the 2026 and 2027 finals have already been announced: 

• 2025-26 Champions League final: Puskas Arena, Budapest, Hungary.
• 2025-26 Europa League final: Besiktas Stadium, Istanbul, Turkey.
• 2025-26 Conference League final: Leipzig Stadium, Leipzig, Germany. 
• 2026-27 Champions League final: Metropolitano Stadium, Madrid, Spain. 
• 2026-27 Europa League final: Waldstadion, Frankfurt, Germany.
• 2026-27 Conference League final: Besiktas Stadium, Istanbul, Turkey. 

UEFA have now confirmed a list of potential host venues for the same competitions in 2028 and 2029. 

Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena, known as Fußball Arena München in UEFA competitions, is the only venue that has expressed an interest in hosting the Champions League final in 2028. 

Wembley Stadium in London and Barcelona’s Camp Nou are the two venues that have registered an interest in hosting the Champions League final in 2029. 

Juventus’s Allianz Stadium, known as Juventus Stadium in UEFA competitions, has registered an interest in hosting both the Europa League and Conference League finals in both 2028 and 2029. 

The Parc Olympique Lyonnais in Lyon, the Parc des Princes in Paris, the National Arena in Bucharest and the Nations Stadium in Belgrade have also expressed an interest in hosting the Europa League final in both 2928 and 2029. The Ankara 19 Mayis Stadium is also an option for the 2029 Europa League final. 

The Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Lille, the Puskas Arena in Budapest, Astana Arena and Almaty Stadium in Kazakhstan and Arena Gdansk in Poland have registered an interest in hosting the 2028 Conference League final, along with the Juventus Stadium. 

The same list of venues, plus the Helsinki Olympic Stadium, have expressed an interest in hosting the 2029 Conference League final.

Luciano Spalletti admits he was ‘surprised’ that one of his staff members, Daniele Baldini, decided not to follow him at Juventus.

The Italian tactician confirmed he had brought four staff members to the Allianz Stadium, but revealed one of his closest collaborators, Daniele Baldini, decided against joining him in Turin.”

“We all know each other in the world of football; we just need to take confidence. They are Domenichini, Martusciello, Russo and Sinatti. Who is Daniele Baldini?

Baldini, 61, was one of Spalletti’s closest collaborators, having worked with the Tuscan tactician for his entire career, from being the Empoli vice-coach in 2001 to technical collaborator at Inter, Roma, Napoli and the Italy national team.

A former Italian defender, Baldini made 52 Serie A appearances with Empoli during his playing career.

Martin Guastadisegno, agent of RC Strasbourg striker Joaquín Panichelli, admits Milan have been following his client for ‘some time’ but he hasn’t heard from the Rossoneri directors in recent weeks.

Panichelli’s agent, Martin Guastadisegno, confirmed Milan’s interest in his client in an interview with Milan Press.

“No news with Milan. At the moment, we haven’t heard from anyone, even though I have a great relationship with Furlani and Moncada,” the striker’s agent said.

Guastadisegno added that he has not spoken with Milan directors in recent weeks.

“No, but it’s a name that Milan knows and has been following for some time,” he concluded.

Panichelli is under contract with RC Strasbourg until June 2030.

The 23-year-old has scored nine goals in ten Ligue 1 appearances this season.

Milan might be looking for a new centre-forward in the winter transfer window, given that Santiago Gimenez has been struggling to match expectations and hasn’t yet scored a goal in Serie A this season.

Gimenez joined Milan in a deal exceeding €30m in the January 2025 transfer window and has netted seven times in 30 appearances with the Rossoneri.

Leao back in contention for Milan vs. Roma

Reports on Thursday confirmed that Leao was a major doubt for Milan heading into their upcoming Serie A match against Roma, who sit level on points with Napoli at the top of the league standings before kick-off. 

The Portugal international had been struggling with inflammation around his hip, however, according to reports from Calciomercato.com, Leao has begun to shake that problem off and is now in contention to start again against Roma. 

Leao is reportedly ‘not 100% fully fit’, but it still in line to start from the off against the Giallorossi, even if that means he has to come off before full-time. 

According to Friday’s reports, Fikayo Tomori and Santiago Gimenez could both be ruled out of the Milan match. 

Tomori is suffering from a pair of knocks to his knee and thigh, while Gimenez has not yet overcome an ankle issue he picked up against Atalanta last time out in Serie A. As per Calciomercato, they are both likely to miss out on the Roma match barring any last-minute turn-arounds in Saturday’s final training session. 

Tomori and Gimenez add to an injury list that already includes Adrien Rabiot and Christian Pulisic, who have both already been ruled out of the Roma game.

Luciano Spalletti held his first press conference as the Juventus coach on Friday: here are five things we learned.

The Tuscan tactician has signed a contract until the end of the season, and the club will decide whether to extend his stay until 2027 at the end of the current campaign.

Here are five things we learned from his first meeting with the media.

Contract until June 2026

Both Spalletti and Juventus GM Damien Comolli explained why they decided to sign a short-term contract, and the coach didn’t seem to be concerned about it. “If I had not believed that this team has potential, despite difficult moments, why should I have accepted an eight-month contract?” Spalletti said. The Italian tactician added that because of his career and experience in football, he is not worried about a short-term deal: “Luckily, for my career and what football has given me, I don’t need guarantees on my future. I think it’s quite fair to make assessments. I’m not forced to stay in a certain situation because of a contract. Therefore, we do this experience together, and I find it a very simple and honest and clear situation.”

System

Spalletti will make his debut as the new Juventus coach tomorrow against Cremonese, but he’ll only have one training session to prepare for the next Serie A fixture. Spalletti confirmed that he’ll likely pick a three-man defence for his first game in charge, but the aim is to work on a four-man defence going forward. Regardless of the tactics, however, Spalletti insisted that his players will have to show an appropriate attitude during games and training sessions: “We all know that coaches depend on the footballers. Coaches can be good, but the players’ quality makes the difference.” The Tuscan tactician called for “attention, work, availability to become friends inside the dressing room because it’s always through co-operation, passion and friendship that any team, in any sport, can go to the next level.”

The Italian tactician added that he’ll try to instil his attacking mentality in the team: “When you go on the pitch, it is fundamental to win games. However, given that football is also a show, one tries to make a good product, a product of quality for those watching,” he said.

“You [journalists] are also looking for new words. New words don’t tire the mind. On the contrary, doing the same things flattens people’s creativity. So we are looking for something beautiful to see. I’ve always perceived this atmosphere and quality in this stadium. But first of all, we must win on the pitch and then talk about something else.”

Napoli

Spalletti hit back at criticism from Naples as fans and media argued the Italian tactician had promised he’d not coach any other club in Italy. The 66-year-old explained that the option not to join any other club in Italy was only valid for 2023-24, after which he was “free” to take on different professional avenues. It was the only moment in the press conference where the Italian tactician slightly raised his voice: “Those who use this situation to attack me, decontextualise it from reality, and you can understand their intentions.” Spalletti insisted that he maintains a solid bond with Napoli and their fans and even revealed that he received the blood draw for this morning’s medical test from the right arm because on the left one, he has a tattoo he had had after winning the Scudetto with the Partenopei in 2023.

Players’ management

Vlahovic’s management was a big talking point during Igor Tudor’s reign as well. Vlahovic’s contract expires at the end of the season, and he’s unlikely to sign a new deal. The striker’s transfer situation technically poses a challenge for the Juventus coach as well, but Spalletti argued that he’d rely on the ex-Fiorentina striker as long as he shows the right attitude. “With Vlahovic, it’s easy. I have to talk to him. I haven’t received any restrictions from the club regarding any player. I’ll see what he will do and his responses. Based on the last game against Udinese, he has clear intentions, and that behaviour fixes everything because he played an excellent game.” Spalletti also spoke about Teun Koopmeiners, who has been used in multiple roles, but hasn’t yet justified his €60m price tag. Spalletti revealed that he tried to bring the Dutchman to Napoli in the past, suggesting that he thinks highly of the Dutchman, who can play either as a holding or box-to-box midfielder.

Juventus’ target

Spalletti insisted that Juventus can still fight for the title if they improve their results this season. Although the minimum objective will be to qualify for the Champions League, the Certaldo-born tactician also fuelled Juventus’ Scudetto ambitions: “I hope I can get back and be involved in the race for the Scudetto. It’s what we were discussing with the players yesterday,” he said.

“We must aim for the top, and in this case, the top is the title race. Nine games have been played, still 29 to go. Many games. I’ve seen any sort of thing in my over 30-year career. I don’t see why I should settle. I have absolute respect for the quality of these players.

“I’ve watched many Serie A games this season, and I didn’t see many teams dominating. I watched the last games of Inter and Napoli, who I consider among the best-equipped. They also lost some games,” Spalletti added.

“We are not in a condition to be arrogant about anything. So we must have absolute respect for everyone. I don’t like mottos; the message must always come from the ball on the turf, that’s the right way to talk.”

During his first press conference as Juventus coach, Luciano Spalletti said he tried to sign Teun Koopmeiners in the past, but ‘our resources were inferior to Atalanta’s demands.’

What Spalletti said about Koopmeiners

The Italian tactician replied to a question about Dutch midfielder Koopmeiners, who has so far failed to justify his €60m price tag at the Allianz Stadium: “I know Koop well because I followed him with other clubs in the past. Then, he cost a lot, and we couldn’t sign him,” Spalletti said.

“When I spoke to him yesterday, I reminded him that we had spoken on the phone. I had tried to convince him, even if our resources were inferior to the club’s [Atalanta’s] demands. I still have the same idea. I think he’s a holding midfielder or a box-to-box midfielder. Sometimes he’s also played as a centre-back. Here again, we have to congratulate a coach, Gasp, who coached him well and took the best out of this player, putting him in a different position. He presses the opponents and he has feet that, when he kicks towards the goal, know where the ball will end up.

“If you cage him, make him play with his shoulders to the goal, close to the opponents’ defensive line, he doesn’t have the quality of Yildiz or Openda, or footballers who were born for that role and that position on the pitch. He has other qualities, but Gasp was excellent in taking the most out of him in that position, from a footballer who had other skill sets.”

Federico Baschirotto does not hide his admiration for Jamie Vardy but plays down comparisons with Leicester City: ‘We think about ourselves.’

Cremonese have had a fantastic start to the season as they sit 8th in Serie A with 14 points in nine games.

Vardy joined the newly promoted Serie A side on a free transfer in the summer and has already scored one goal this season.

“He’s a champion, on the pitch, but especially off it. He shows the way with the example. When I met him, I told him that I followed Leicester’s race for the title when I was younger,” Baschirotto told Gazzetta.

“We have Vardy, but let’s leave comparisons [with Leicester City] aside and just think about ourselves.”

Cremonese host Juventus tomorrow, in Luciano Spalletti’s debut as the Old Lady’s head coach. The Grigiorossi are just one point below the Bianconeri in the Serie A table.

“It doesn’t change anything. Juventus still have important values and high-level players. On paper, they are stronger than us, but the pitch will do the talking,” Baschirotto said.

“I don’t look at the table. Juventus are a great team, but we are aware of what’s needed: humility, respect, but not fear. We are becoming increasingly aware of our potential. So, I respectfully say: Win? Why not. Obviously is complicated, but we don’t lack determination.”

Juventus General Manager Damien Comolli explains that all club directors and the ownership agreed that the team needed a new coach and reveals they are in a ‘shortlist phase’ to appoint the new sporting director.

The French director introduced Spalletti and answered questions from the media.

“My Italian hasn’t improved much, so I apologise. Welcome to the unveiling press conference of our coach, Luciano Spalletti. We are glad to welcome him for many reasons. Naturally, he is a great expert on Italian football; you know his career, which has been successful in different clubs and environments,” Comolli said.

“He’s a person who can bring forward the football brand. We have agreed to a contract until the end of the season with an option to extend. What we discussed with Luciano is that the option, the agreement, is a potential long-term collaboration. Luciano and I understood that this is the right approach. During the season, we can sit down and decide how to continue.”

It was believed that Spalletti would sign a contract with automatic extension to 2027 if he had qualified for the Champions League this season, but this is not the case, as Juventus will decide whether to activate the option at the end of the campaign regardless of the final placement.

“It’s an option [to extend] for one season until 2026-27. As the coach and I already said, it’s not something on paper; it depends on how the collaboration goes. It’s more about the spirit of collaboration,” Comolli said.

“We hired Spalletti for what he achieved in the past; the playing style is important too. How did we make this decision? Giorgio [Chiellini], François [Modesto] and I are in constant dialogue with the owners. We felt the team needed a new coach, and we unanimously decided that Spalletti was the perfect candidate to continue this adventure. The fact that all three and the owners were on the same page was crucial in the decisional process. There’s not one centimetre of distance between us in the decisional process.”

Comolli also said Juventus are finalising the search for a new sporting director. Football Italia reported earlier today that Marco Ottolini was among the top candidates.

“The search for a sporting director is still ongoing,” said Comolli.

“We are already in a shortlist phase, we are reaching our target, and we’ll actively tell you the updates when they are available.”

Do Juventus already have a strategy for the winter transfer window now that they have hired a new coach?

“It’s one of the things we discussed when we met Luciano on Monday. There’s no specific plan,” Comolli replied.

“We’ll see if there are opportunities. If somebody leaves, we’ll replace him, but currently we are not thinking about acquiring new players.

“I’m relaxed regarding new [summer] signings and I am confident. We signed excellent players; they need time to settle, but we are happy to see how they are performing. We have options for some of these players. Let’s discuss it again in 12 or 18 months. Luciano and I have been in football for 33 years. I’ve seen anything in football. The coach is right when he says they need time, but I’m confident about the quality of our new players. I won’t lose sleep over new acquisitions. Perhaps I lost sleep over the team’s performances. I used to, now I have confidence in Luciano.”

Comolli opens up about Tudor’s sacking and Spalletti’s appointment

Comolli insisted that he had never spoken to Spalletti before Monday.

“Not at all. When I arrived in June, it was clear that Tudor would be the coach, and we also extended his contract. This is what we thought about in June.

“When us three, on Sunday night, decided to make a change, we contacted Luciano for the first time. We met for the first time at lunchtime on Monday. I can guarantee we had never discussed before. On Tuesday, we prepared the contract, and he arrived on Thursday morning. It was a fluid process; we did everything in three days.”

Lastly, Comolli explained the main reason why Juventus sacked Tudor earlier this week.

“Results. Lack of results. It’s simple,” he concluded.

“At some point, we thought this cycle had to end. It always depends on results. The main thing is that there were negative results. The team had not performed in the best way, and I said it clearly to him on Monday. This is why we made the change on Monday and hired a new coach. I think Spalletti was the best option.”

Manchester United striker Joshua Zirkzee has been linked with a move away from the club in recent weeks.

The 24-year-old has struggled for regular opportunities at Old Trafford, and he needs to leave the club in January to play more often. With the World Cup coming up next summer, he needs to play regularly with his club to cement his place in the national team. Zirkzee is yet to score a goal this season, and he has not started a single league game.

Joshua Zirkzee wants out

According to a report from TeamTalk, the striker is open to leaving Manchester United in January so that he can get his career back on track. Several clubs are keen on securing a signature, and West Ham United have also joined the race. They will face competition from Aston Villa and Everton.

Similarly, Aston Villa could use more depth in the attacking unit. The Netherlands International could support Ollie Watkins in the attack. He is more than just a goal scorer, and his creativity and link-up play could add a new dimension to the Aston Villa attack. 

Finally, Everton need an alternative to Beto, who has not been at his best. It will be interesting to see if they can sign the Manchester United striker in January. All three clubs could prove to be excellent opportunities for the player. It remains to be seen whether he is prepared to continue in the Premier League. He has been linked with the return to Italy as well. It will be interesting to see what he decides.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is expected to have money to spend this January if there are specific players he’s keen to bring in straight away.

However, as first reported here for the Daily Briefing, there is not necessarily going to be any rush to spend more money in the upcoming winter transfer window, with the club thinking more long-term.

Arsenal decided not to enter the market last January despite having a major injury crisis, and then ended up making plenty of changes during the summer.

The Gunners remain in a good place financially, so there could be a decent budget there for Arteta to work with, though it’s too early to know for sure if the club will be actively pursuing anyone just yet.

Arsenal have three long-term transfer targets

I was told about three long-term targets to watch out for, with Arsenal eyeing youngsters such as Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi and Bayern Munich’s Lennart Karl, though the latter of those probably isn’t too realistic.

The north London giants might also be in the mix for Barcelona’s Marc Casado, though it’s again not clear how realistic a deal is as Chelsea are considered further ahead in the race for his signature.

Aside from that, Arsenal’s focus in the near future will be on new contracts for star trio Bukayo Saka, Jurrien Timber, and Declan Rice.

Former Manchester United winger Nani has called on his old club to seal a transfer move for Tottenham midfielder Joao Palhinha.

The Portugal international is currently on loan at Spurs from Bayern Munich, having previously impressed in the Premier League with Fulham.

Nani also knows Palhinha from their time together at Sporting Lisbon, and it’s clear that the ex-Red Devil is a big fan.

Speaking to Covers.com, as quoted by the Metro, Nani named Palhinha as an ideal target for Man Utd, as he looks like a complete player who fits their DNA.

It remains to be seen if Palhinha will actually be a realistic target for United any time soon, but he’s been named as a dream signing by Nani.

MUFC also do look in need of new additions in that area of their squad, with Palhinha surely to be a significant upgrade on the unconvincing Manuel Ugarte.

“Joao Palhinha is a great player. I played with him at Sporting, where he was growing and learning a lot. After a few years, he became one of the best players in his position,” Nani said.

The Tuscan tactician was unveiled as the new Juventus coach at a press conference on Friday.

Spalletti has signed a contract until June 2026, but there’s no automatic option to extend to 2027 if he qualifies for the Champions League.

Spalletti explained why he accepted a short-term contract and said he hopes to bring Juventus back in the race for the Serie A title.

He also reiterated that he didn’t betray Napoli, saying that the club and the city will always have a special place in his heart.

Tomorrow, he will make his debut in an away game at Cremonese. Spalletti admitted that he could confirm a three-man defence on Saturday, although the plan for the future is to develop a system with a four-man defence.

Genoa offered Ottolini a contract extension over the last few weeks, but the Italian director took time as he was fascinated by a possible move to Juventus.

The Serie A giants have yet to appoint a new sporting director. Before Juventus-Udinese, Giorgio Chiellini said the club would soon make a decision, and Ottolini is now moving quickly towards that appointment.

It’s just a shame that his time at Genoa ended in such traumatic circumstances after a disastrous start to the season.

Genoa sit at the rock bottom of the table with just three points in nine matches, the worst start to a Serie A campaign in the club’s history in the three-point era.

Ottolini will leave Genoa in the worst possible way, even if CEO Andres Blazquez has always had decisional powers when it came to negotiations.

Reports in Italy claim that Spalletti won’t change Juventus’ three-man defence tomorrow as he hasn’t had enough time to prepare the team for a tactical switch.

Spalletti has been without a team since June 2025, when he was sacked as the Italy coach after a 3-0 loss against Norway.

Several Italian players will be involved in the race for the Premier League title in 2025-26, especially after Gianluigi Donnarumma’s move to Manchester City on deadline day.

Mario Balotelli and Federico Chiesa are the only Italian players to have won a Premier League winners’ medal, as other Italian champions in England, Federico Macheda, Carlo Cudicini and Massimo Taibi didn’t reach the minimum number of appearances for the award.

Which Italians have won the Premier League?

Liverpool winger Chiesa became the second Italian player to receive a Premier League winners’ medal in 2024-25 after Balotelli at Manchester City in 2011-12.

Chiesa made six Premier League appearances last term, enough to receive the award that other compatriots had previously missed out.

Manchester United’s Macheda and Taibi, and Chelsea’s Cudicini had also won the Premier League, but didn’t receive the piece of silverware because of an insufficient number of league appearances.

During the 2025 summer transfer window, many other Italian players have moved to the Premier League, including Chiesa’s new Liverpool teammate Giovanni Leoni, new Manchester City goalkeeper Gigio Donnarumma, and Brighton’s Diego Coppola.

Riccardo Calafiori’s Arsenal will likely battle Chiesa and Leoni for this season’s Premier League title, but Gigio Donnarumma’s Manchester City will also be among the leading contenders.

All the Italian players in the Premier League in 2025-26

There will be 11 Italian players in the English Premier League this season: Tonali, Destiny Udogie, Guglielmo Vicario, Donnarumma, Calafiori, Wilfried Gnonto, Leoni, Michael Kayode, Chiesa, Nicolò Savona and Coppola.

Donnarumma, the Italy captain, signed for Manchester City on deadline day and has a bonus tied to Premier League victory in his five-year contract at the Etihad Stadium.

“I’ve always trained well and I couldn’t wait to join City because they really wanted me, the coach really wanted me, and that made me proud,” Donnarumma said at a press conference attended by Football Italia in September.

“To be wanted so strongly by the best club in the world makes me proud, but also very emotional and happy.

“When you are wanted so strongly by a club like City, it means you’ve worked well, and being wanted by one of the strongest coaches in the world like Guardiola is an indescribable emotion.”

With Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City among the favourites to win the Premier League this term, it is highly likely that another Italian international will be crowned English champion with his club in 2025-26.

 

Crystal Palace are reportedly interested in a potential transfer move for Aston Villa centre-back Ezri Konsa as a replacement for Marc Guehi.

Liverpool remain keen on signing Guehi after coming close to agreeing a deal for him in the summer, and even if he doesn’t move to Anfield, he is expected to become a free agent at the end of the season.

Guehi is not looking likely to sign a new contract with Palace, so they’ll have to look for a new defender, and Konsa seems like a smart target for the Eagles to consider.

The England international has shone at Villa Park, and one imagines he could more than do a capable job of replacing Guehi in Oliver Glasner’s squad.

Ezri Konsa transfer to Crystal Palace?

Konsa has also attracted interest from Liverpool themselves, but one imagines they’ll prioritise Guehi again unless they’re beaten to his signature.

Villa surely won’t want to let Konsa go, but they have recently had to make sales due to financial issues.

The Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability laws have hit Villa particularly hard, which has meant the club cashing in on Douglas Luiz last summer and then Jhon Duran in January, followed up by Jacob Ramsey ahead of this season.

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has disagreed with fellow pundit Micah Richards after his claim about Alexander Isak’s transfer to Liverpool this summer.

Isak ended up leaving Newcastle for Liverpool in a British transfer record £125m fee, and this followed a lengthy saga as the Sweden international went on strike after being unsettled by the Reds’ interest.

Newcastle, in fairness, seemed to do similar when they pursued Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen, who was also on the radar of a number of other top clubs.

Wolves had to fight off interest in Strand Larsen in the end, and Shearer has suggested his form has dipped since then due to the distraction of the transfer interest.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has admitted his side simply aren’t enjoying as much luck with injuries as they did last season.

Slot guided the Reds to an impressive Premier League title victory in his first season in charge, but he’s suffered a much tougher start to his second campaign at Anfield.

It perhaps now looks like Liverpool got a bit lucky last season as both Arsenal and Manchester City suffered a dip in their performances, partly due to having injuries to key players themselves.

Liverpool, by contrast, managed to keep their key names fit for pretty much the entire campaign, though they’re now having worse luck in that department.

Slot has attempted to explain some of Liverpool’s poor results and performances this season, though he insists he’s not trying to make excuses for his team.

“If you could talk about an issue … not all of them have had a proper pre-season, or have been injured during the season,” Slot said.

“So when three or four are injured you go back to 16 players. I’m a firm believer in the fact that 20-21 players are enough, but you have to keep them fit as we did last season.”

He added: “It has been more difficult than last season to keep them all available. Maybe last season we were more lucky or now we’re more unlucky.

“Again, no excuses for our results before people are going to say this again, but we had to play a lot of away games with only two days of rest in between.”

Can Liverpool bounce back?

Liverpool will no doubt hope to have a better chance of getting points on the board once everyone’s back available again, but do their problems lie deeper than that?

Marc Guehi transfer: What next for “top player”?

Guehi looks ideal for Liverpool right now, as they have Ibrahima Konate coming towards the end of his contract, while Virgil van Dijk is not getting any younger.

The 25-year-old could also be ideal for Man Utd, though, as they play three at the back and might do well to find alternatives to the likes of Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt, while Lisandro Martinez has proven really injury prone during his time at Old Trafford.

Former United star Louis Saha was recently quoted by the Manchester Evening News as praising Guehi and urging his old club to try signing him ahead of Liverpool.

“Marc Guehi is definitely a top player and a leader. I love him as a player,” Saha said.

The journalist claims LFC want to sign two elite midfielders, so Wharton is surely one of those, while Alexis Mac Allister could also leave as Real Madrid are apparently preparing a January bid.

It’s easy to see why Los Blancos could be keen on Mac Allister, with the 26-year-old long looking like one of the most impressive performers in the Premier League in his position.

Manchester United have had some internal discussions over signing Lille midfield wonderkid Ayyoub Bouaddi, as first reported in an exclusive for the Daily Briefing.

The Red Devils have scouted Bouaddi “extensively”, according to sources, with Christopher Vivell said to be a big fan of the highly-rated 18-year-old.

Bouaddi has been a revelation in the Lille first-team and it seems inevitable that he’ll soon earn himself a big move.

As well as Man Utd, there is interest from a long list of other major European clubs, including Arsenal and others from outside the Premier League.

Still, it seems United are currently being credited with the strongest interest, even if there have not yet been any talks or offers over the player.

United have been a bit smarter with some of their recent recruitment, looking to save money by bringing in young talents rather than just splashing the cash on superstar signings like they’ve done for so much of the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

Leny Yoro was one elite talent snapped up by United, and he also came from Lille, where Bouaddi is the latest top talent to shine in their squad.

It will be interesting to see if MUFC can use that relationship with Lille to get another top youngster before other big clubs around Europe.

It’s not entirely clear if the Semenyo bid will come in January or next summer, but it seems the 25-year-old is a key part of Liverpool’s plans for the next two windows.

Alberto Gilardino saw a positive performance from Pisa to hold Lazio in a goalless draw, representing ‘another brick in the wall for our self-confidence.’

The Tuscans have tended to step up against the bigger teams, as at the weekend they were on the verge of a victory away to Milan until the last-gasp equaliser.

Tonight they had the better of the second half in a 0-0 draw with Maurizio Sarri’s Lazio, but are still looking for their first Serie A win of the season.

Gilardino sees Pisa progress

“I have to congratulate the lads, for their organisation, balance, and desire to take the initiative,” Gilardino told DAZN Italia.

“We defended very well, apart from a couple of situations, where Adrian Semper made two great saves. It is another brick in the wall for our self-confidence, we must continue like this.”

There was a shift to four at the back to counter Maurizio Sarri’s 4-3-3 formation, so could this be the path forward?

“The team has shown it can play this way too, we worked on it this week, and are ready to try it again in future. What matters for me is the way we interpret the match, based also on the characteristics of the opponents.”

Without a win yet, Pisa have climbed out of the relegation zone this evening with five points, leaving Hellas Verona, Fiorentina and Genoa behind them.

This was their third positive result in a row, drawing with Hellas Verona, Milan and Lazio, keeping two clean sheets in that spell.

Maurizio Sarri admits he was ‘forced to try something different’ at Lazio with the transfer embargo, so he has ‘reasons to enjoy it, a few more reasons to be annoyed, I’ll take that.’

The Biancocelesti were hoping to build some real momentum following their victory over Juventus, but while the unbeaten run extended to five games, it was a frustrating night in Pisa.

Both teams had chances and tested the goalkeepers, with Lazio getting the better of the first half, then needing Ivan Provedel to step up after the break.

Sarri forced to try something new at Lazio

“It was a midweek game, we were missing a lot of players and had others who were exhausted after a long spell of inactivity, the Lega Serie A so kindly gave us four days of rest compared to six for Pisa,” Sarri told Sky Sport Italia.

“However, our problem at the moment is that we have a depleted squad and those who are playing had been out for a long time, so are not fully fit either. We remained solid, we didn’t do enough in attack to win the game, but this will suffice right now.”

Goals are proving to be a problem for them so far this season, but the coach rejected the idea there was a problem with the centre-forwards.

“There is a problem in attacking, rather than a problem regarding the centre-forwards. Just like when we concede it is not only the fault of the central defenders, it is not just the strikers who have to work to create chances. We just hope everyone will soon be back to full fitness.”

Lazio were already decimated by injuries to Elseid Hysaj, Nuno Tavares, Matteo Cancellieri, Taty Castellanos, Samuel Gigot, Nicolò Rovella and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.

This evening, they saw Luca Pellegrini and Mario Gila hobble off in the second half after knocks, but Toma Basic and Gustav Isaksen have been revitalised, while this was their third straight clean sheet.

“Basic had been left off the squad list for so long, but he stepped up and made an immediate impact when called upon,” noted Sarri.

“Unfortunately, Isaksen was suffering from a nasty illness like mononucleosis and it debilitated him, so he was able to play a great game four days ago, but inevitably paid for it today. We have been hanging on and trying to stay afloat since June with very little positive news, so at least we are becoming solid now, that is a plus.

“Success for us would be reaching the end of this calendar year with seven or eight players back so we can finally be competitive.”

The transfer embargo inevitably cast a shadow over Sarri’s return to Lazio, but he resisted the urge to walk away.

“I am not able to play my football at the moment, I could not change even a single player in the squad, so I was forced to try something different, and that in itself is fun for me. It gives me a fresh challenge, there are reasons to enjoy it, perhaps a few more reasons to be annoyed, but I will take that.”

Danilo Cataldi is a Lazio fan born and bred, but has he benefited from having a season out on loan at Fiorentina and returning to the club he always supported?

“Playing in Rome for someone from here is very difficult, so perhaps a year outside his natural habitat was good for him. Danilo is very intelligent, has good technique, he just needs a stronger engine and pace, then he’d be ready for any big club,” noted Sarri.

The Aquile are now in 11^th place on 12 points from nine rounds, the same as Udinese and Torino.

The conversation between new Juventus coach Luciano Spalletti and goalkeeper Mattia Perin is going viral, as it already sets the scene for this different era.

The former Italy and Napoli boss signed a short-term contract to June 2026 today, with an option to extend that is not automatic based on Champions League qualification, so the club could still decide to take a different path at the end of the season.

A video was released on their official channels showing his first day at the Continassa training camp, and one scene caught the eye of many fans and media.

After initially joking with Perin over his outfit, with help from Giorgio Chiellini, the goalkeeper asked if everything was alright for Spalletti.

The coach shook his head from side to side and replied cryptically: “That depends on you.”

Perin acknowledged the team knew full well that the onus was on them to turn things around, having already won under caretaker manager Massimo Brambilla after Igor Tudor’s dismissal.

“We are at your disposal,” assured Perin.

“Well that’s already something,” replied Spalletti.

As both Pisa and Lazio had big chances and forced tough saves, they had to share the points on a rainy night in Tuscany.

Both teams were fresh from positive results, as the hosts were leading Milan until conceding a last-gasp equaliser for 2-2 at San Siro, while the Aquile had beaten Juventus. Pisa were still looking for their first win of the season, missing Raul Albiol, Calvin Stengs, Mateus Lusuardi and Tomas Esteves. The Lazio injury list remained extensive with Elseid Hysaj, Nuno Tavares, Matteo Cancellieri, Taty Castellanos, Samuel Gigot, Nicolò Rovella and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru out of action.

Matteo Tramoni failed to make the most of an early opportunity, scuffing well wide from the edge of the area on the M’Bala Nzola lay-off.

Toma Basic saw his angled drive smothered, but Pisa came close again when Idrissa Touré volleyed across the face of goal at the back post on a Juan Cuadrado cross.

Gustav Isaksen twisted and turned to test Adrian Semper at the base of the near post, then moments later forced an even trickier save when set up by Mattia Zaccagni.

Semper out-did himself with a sensational fingertip save to push the Basic daisy-cutter onto the base of the upright from the edge of the area.

After the restart, Luca Pellegrini intercepted a Tramoni header that was on target, then Simone Canestrelli only grazed his head to a cross, sending it just wide of the far post.

Mario Gila and Luca Pellegrini went off after knocks, but Provedel needed a great reaction save to deny Stefano Moreo’s header on a corner at the 73^rd minute.

Pisa’s crosses were causing real problems, as Touré’s towering header on an Angori assist flashed across the face of goal to skim the far post.

Alessio Romagnoli threw himself in the way of a Moreo finish from seven yards after the Nzola lay-off, while Matias Vecino drilled wide from the edge of the box after a smart turn.
