Who actually trades XRP? Inside the Korea and Japan books
Although there were just two games on Opening Day to kick off the 2026 World Cup, that does not mean there still wasn’t plenty of action to give viewers an appetizer of what is to come for the remainder of the summer’s hottest tournament.
As every team begins the World Cup undefeated, only one can be a winner at the end of the Group stages.
Look at the winners and losers from Day 1 to see who is in control of their respective group.

Winner: Mexico, 2-0
In an opening game that saw more red cards than goals, Mexico and South Africa kicked off the 2026 World Cup at the Mexico City Stadium, as El Tri looked to open their first host game since 1986 in style.
Out of the gate, Mexico made it clear they were going to be in control, with Julian Quiñones delivering a fast ball to the bottom right of the net in the ninth minute to open up the game.
The first half would remain a defensive contest, as Mexico would not find the back of the net again until the 67th minute of the second half, as Raul Jimenez would knock in his first FIFA World Cup goal on a header to put El Tri up by two.
South Africa would not put up much of a fight, registering only three shots all game. If the Bafana Banana wants to make it out of the Group stages, they’ll need to turn it around next week against the Czech Republic.
Winner: South Korea, 2-1
In what some may call a slow burner, South Korea and the Czech Republic put together a rather entertaining game if you cancel out the first half.
It would not be until the second half that one of these teams would finally put the ball in the back of the net, as Czech Republic captain Ladislav Krejčí finished a set-piece pass with a header, giving his team some much-needed momentum.
However, South Korea’s In-Beom Hwang would eventually tie the game up in the 67th minute with a smoothly composed shot that left social media enamored.
Time would tick as both teams looked to score the go-ahead goal until South Korea’s Oh Hyeon-gyu would finish off a quick assist from In-Beom Hwang to put their team up by one.
Hyeon-gyu’s goal would be the final one of the game as South Korea ended the Opening Day for the 2026 World Cup with a 2-1 victory.

Group A contenders South Korea and the Czech Republic will go up against one another in Zapopan on Thursday in the hopes they can bolt out of the gates at FIFA World Cup 2026. Almost exactly 10 years after their most recent meeting, the two teams will open their World Cup campaign with a closely matched showdown at the Estadio Akron.

South Korea will be captained by Los Angeles FC forward Son Heung-min, who is just three goals from becoming his country’s all-time record scorer. That honor currently belongs to Cha Bum-kun, who scored 58 times over the course of his 12-year international career, while Son currently sits on 56 finishes for his nation.
Meanwhile, Miroslav Koubek’s side will be relying heavily on the Bundesliga-based attacking partnership of Patrik Schick and Adam Hlozek to do the damage up top. These two teams have an even record of one win apiece from their three meetings to date, but this will be the first to take place under competitive conditions.
Thursday’s victor stands a fine chance of taking a vital upper hand in Group A, where co-hosts Mexico and South Africa complete the competition.

The Tesla Model Y is the best-selling vehicle in South Korea in May.
New car sales in South Korea stumble -10.2% year-on-year in May to just 126,955 units. However it would have been worse without the help of foreign manufacturers, up 5.9% to 23.5% share whereas domestics ones drop -14.3% to 76.5% of their home market. Year-to-date, the market is now up just 1% to 686,008 units including 540,054 domestic manufacturers (-5.1%) and 145,954 foreigners (+32.3%).
Kia (-0.9%) celebrates 5 consecutive months at #1 with 35.2% share, confirming its newfound dominance over sister brand Hyundai (-20.7%) at only 30.9%. Kia now has a whopping 22,105-unit advantage over Hyundai year-to-date. Tesla (+65.4%) continues to stun, selling over 10,000 units for the third month in a row. BMW (+2.3%) passes a freefalling Genesis (-35.3%) for fourth place. Audi (+47.7%) and Lexus (+13.8%) defy the negative market with splendid YoY gains. BYD (+101.2%) slides outside the Top 10 at #12 but still doubles its sales year-on-year.
Looking at domestic models, the Kia Sorento (+1.3%) delivers an 8th win in the past 9 months, outselling the Hyundai Grandeur (+12.7%) like last month. The Kia Sportage (-10.1%) matches the market and is back up three spots on last month to #3, whereas the Kia Carnival (-31.7%) and Hyundai Avante (-29.7%) both implode. Excellent performance by the Kia EV3 (+61.9%), lodging a 4th straight Top 10 finish. The new Renault Korea Filante seems to have already peaked, down 9 ranks on last month to #31.
As for foreign nameplates, the Tesla Model Y (+40.5%) delivers a historic result: at 8,762 sales it is simply #1 in the overall market including domestic models. It is simply the first time we have ever seen a foreign model top the South Korean charts. Ever (at least since Korean manufacturers were born). The BMW 5 Series (-1.5%) is back above the Tesla Model 3 (+294.2%) with the Mercedes E Class (-45.3%) and BMW X3 (+33.9%) rounding out the Top 5. At #6, the new BYD Sealion 7 manages a 9th straight Top 10 finish.
