Canada April 2026: Toyota, Volvo, Genesis islands of growth in negative market

6 May 2026 at 08:55

Toyota Tacoma sales are up 54.4% in April.

Local consultancy DesRosiers Automotive has the Canadian new light vehicle market down -3.9% year-on-year in April to an estimated 178,000 units. Keep in mind April 2025 was the biggest April volume since 2018 so the comparison base is quite high. In this context, and given record high petrol prices, this month’s result is actually not that bad. Indeed the SAAR of 1.83 million, although down from the 1.90 million of April 2025, is also quite satisfying and just down from the 1.85 million of March. Note total sales for manufacturers still reporting monthly are down -7.1% to 77,349. The year-to-date result after four months stands at 584,000, -5.3% below the same period a year ago.

Among OEMs reporting monthly data, Toyota Motor (+5.9%) is the only one in positive, with Hyundai-Kia (-2.6%) resisting slightly better than the market but Honda Canada (-14.8%) skidding. Brand-wise, Genesis (+16.1%), Volvo (+16%) and Toyota (+8.5%) keep their head above the water, Hyundai (-0.7%) is stable while Kia (-6.8%), Acura (-8.5%) and Lexus (-8.9%) contain their fall to the single digits. Subaru (-27.3%) and Mazda (-26.7%) are in serious trouble.

As for models with monthly sales available, the Toyota RAV4 (-37.4%) is back above its archenemy the Honda CR-V for the first time this year and despite a still catastrophic YoY loss. The CR-V leads by almost 5,800 sales YTD. The Hyundai Tucson (+13.7%) is very solid as are the Kia Sportage (+25.7%) and Toyota Corolla (+27.4%), the latter surprising given the traditional poor performance of passenger cars. The Toyota Sienna (+65.2%), Tacoma (+54.4%) and Kia Seltos (+42.8%) all shoot up.

Previous month: Canada March/Q1 2026: Ford Motor (+14.4%), Stellantis (+14.6%) shine, sales down -4.4%

One year ago: Canada April 2025: Honda (+53.2%) helps push market up 10.2%

Ireland April 2026: Toyota RAV4 surges to record 8.4% share

6 May 2026 at 07:06

The Toyota RAV4 is by far the best-selling vehicle in Ireland in April.

Exceptional month for new car sales in Ireland at +17% year-on-year in April to 10,184 units. The year-to-date tally is now up 2.2% to 75,073. Toyota (+38.4%) and Skoda (+34.9%) end the month just 11 units apart, which means Toyota widens the gap with its followers and Skoda ascends to #3 year-to-date. Volkswagen (+2.4%) is weak YoY in comparison but holds 13.7% of the market vs. 10.6% so far this year. BYD (+83.1%) stays inside the Top 10 at #9 with Ford (+61.9%) also very dynamic at #6. Hyundai (+14.7%) and Audi (+11.2%), although managing double-digit YoY lifts, trail the market. Further down, notice Citroen (+161.8%), Opel (+72.7%), MG (+47%) and for once Seat (+38.8%) all in outstanding shape.

Model-wise, the Toyota RAV4 (+166.3%) surges from #119 in March to #1 in April with a stunning 8.4% share, by far the nameplate’s highest ever with a previous best at 4.6% in January 2022. This is also the RAV4’s first win in exactly a year, since April 2025. Due to a particularly slow start of the year the RAV4 stands at #19 year-to-date vs. #5 over the Full Year 2025. The Skoda Octavia (+46.2%) and Kodiaq (+45.4%) complete the podium ahead of surging VW Golf (+72.1%) and Toyota C-HR (+160.7%). The Skoda Enyaq (+262.3%) and VW ID.4 (+94.7%) also shoot up in the remainder of the Top 10 while the BYD Seal U (+176.4%) and Skoda Elroq (+107.1%) are in equally great shape below.

Xbox CEO Pulls the Plug on Copilot for Console, Admits Microsoft’s AI β€˜Doesn’t Align’ With Xbox

6 May 2026 at 00:23

A monitor displays a scene from 'Sea of Thieves' featuring a ship and tentacles, with an adjacent smartphone showing the 'Gaming Copilot' app displaying 'Hey, StormYeti', along with voice input icons and text bubbles.

Shortly after the new leadership cabinet for Xbox chief executive officer Asha Sharma was made public, Sharma took to her personal X (formerly Twitter) account to comment on the appointments but also to reveal another change regarding Xbox's direction. Microsoft's Copilot AI, which had been introduced into the gaming ecosystem as Gaming Copilot through the mobile Xbox app and the Xbox PC app, is seemingly something that no longer aligns with platform's direction. Open AI agent phone to be powered by 2nm Dimensity 9600

5 May 2026 at 10:35
openAI

Previous reports suggested that OpenAI was exploring hardware such as AI-focused earbuds and possibly a phone developed with partners like MediaTek and Qualcomm. Now, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has shared deeper insights into a dedicated AI agent smartphone, including timelines, specifications, and the broader strategy behind it.

OpenAI’s AI agent smartphone vision takes shape

openAI

According to Kuo, OpenAI may accelerate development of its first smartphone, targeting mass production as early as the first half of 2027. MediaTek is currently the leading candidate to supply the processor, which is expected to be a customised chip based on the MediaTek Dimensity 9600 and manufactured using TSMC’s N2P process in the second half of 2026.

The hardware is said to focus heavily on AI-driven tasks, with a dual NPU architecture designed for layered computing. Memory and storage could also see upgrades with LPDDR6 RAM and UFS 5.0, aiming to reduce bottlenecks when handling continuous AI workloads. For imaging, an enhanced ISP is expected to improve high dynamic range output, which could help the device better interpret real-world environments visually.

Kuo suggests that the device may rethink how users interact with smartphones. Instead of relying on multiple apps, the focus could shift to AI agents that handle tasks directly based on user intent. This approach may require deep integration between hardware and software, allowing OpenAI to control the entire experience without platform-level restrictions seen on existing ecosystems.

The phone is also expected to continuously process user context, which includes behaviour and usage patterns, making on-device efficiency critical. Simpler tasks could be handled locally, while more demanding processes may be executed through cloud-based AI systems.

Security features such as pKVM and inline hashing are also expected to be part of the system design. If development stays on track, shipments could reach around 30 million units across 2027 and 2028 combined.

Nintendo fans and Nintendo Switch 2 owners have a lot to look forward to in 2027-2028, if interviewer Kiwi Talkz is to be believed. Reece 'Kiwi Talkz' Reilly, who you may recognize as a YouTuber who regularly interviews game developers and someone who has occasionally leaked accurate information ahead of its official reveal, has shared his latest tidbit that's stirred speculation, and it points to more Metroid, Zelda, and Smash Bros. to look forward to. What 'more' for any of those franchises means is less clear. There's the Legend of Zelda movie that's coming next year, which Reilly mentions, but […]

Atomic Heart Studio Mundfish Sidesteps NVIDIA DLSS 5 Commitment, Rejects AI Tools In Daily Production For Now

4 May 2026 at 23:15

A character from Hogwarts Legacy holds a glowing wand in a dimly lit setting, with the text 'NVIDIA DLSS 5 On' at the bottom right.

In a recent interview with Mundfish founder and CEO Robert Bagratuni about the Atomic Heart series, I inquired about the studio's opinion on NVIDIA DLSS 5, the surprise announcement at GDC 2026 that proved highly controversial among developers and modders: some people love it, others hate it. Atomic Heart already supports NVIDIA DLSS technologies like Super Resolution and Frame Generation. Is Mundfish considering DLSS 5? Well, Bagratuni called it "highly promising", though he added that the developers are following its progress and will evaluate its potential addition in future releases. In short, he hasn't committed yet. DLSS 5 is aΒ very […]

Amazon Price History Feature Now Shows Data for Up to 365 Days

4 May 2026 at 00:52
Amazon

Amazon is giving shoppers a wider look at how product prices have changed before they buy. Its price history feature, available through the AI shopping assistant Rufus, can now show pricing data across 30, 90, and 365 days.

Before Amazon built price history into its own shopping experience, customers often had to depend on third-party plugins, browser extensions, or external tracking sites. These services helped shoppers judge whether a deal was real, but they were not always reliable. Some had device or region limitations, and others could show missing or inaccurate pricing data.

Amazon is now bringing that information directly into the product page. Instead of relying only on a current discount label, shoppers can see how the price has moved over time before deciding whether to buy immediately or wait.

Amazon says more than 50 million customers have already used price history since the feature launched in 2024. The company also says the average customer checks price history three times a month, suggesting that it has become a regular part of the shopping process for both daily-use products and bigger purchases.

There are two ways to use the feature. On a product detail page, customers can click the price history link placed next to the product price. They can also open Rufus from the product page and ask questions such as β€œWhat’s the price history?”, β€œHas this item been on sale in the past 30 days?”, or β€œIs this the lowest price recently?”

On the Amazon Shopping app, the Rufus icon appears at the bottom right corner of the product detail page. On desktop, it is available in the top navigation bar.

The feature is currently available to customers in the U.S., UK, Canada, and India. The expanded 365-day price history view is now rolling out in the U.S., UK, and India, with broader availability expected in the coming weeks.

The tool could help shoppers compare prices on electronics, home appliances, furniture, winter clothing, or everyday essentials. A product may look heavily discounted on the day of purchase, but the one-year history can show whether that price is actually low compared with earlier months.

Watch: Dominik Szoboszlai solo stunner and Senne Lammens howler spark Liverpool comeback to make it 2-2

3 May 2026 at 20:16

Awful defensive mistakes from Manchester United have allowed Liverpool to claw their way back into the game early in the second half.

Despite a dominant opening 45 minutes from the Red Devils, clinical finishes from Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo have leveled the score at 2-2 in this high-stakes match.

Dominik Szoboszlai scores solo goal after Diallo mistake

Manchester United entered the second half with a comfortable two-goal cushion, but that momentum evaporated just two minutes after the restart.

Amad Diallo, who had replaced the injured Benjamin Sesko at halftime, endured a nightmare start to his cameo.

In the 47th minute, Diallo attempted a loose pass in his own half that was easily intercepted by Dominik Szoboszlai.

The Hungarian midfielder needed no second invitation, driving forward with intent and weaving through the United defense.

He capped off the solo run with a composed finish past Senne Lammens, breathing immediate life into an Arne Slot side that had looked second-best until that point.

Senne Lammens gifts Liverpool an equaliser

If the first goal was a gift, the second was a complete collapse.

In the 56th minute, young United goalkeeper Senne Lammens committed a catastrophic error that silenced the Old Trafford crowd.

Under minimal pressure, the Belgian shot-stopper attempted to play out from the back but scuffed his clearance directly into the path of Alexis Mac Allister.

Mac Allister quickly fed Szoboszlai, who unselfishly laid the ball off for Cody Gakpo. With Lammens caught out of position and the goal gaping, the Dutch forward made no mistake, tapping home from close range to make it 2-2.

The two goals in nine minutes have completely shifted the complexion of the match. United, who had appeared to be cruising toward a third-place consolidation, now find themselves under immense pressure.

Will AI Take Your Job? OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Gives a Surprising Answer

2 May 2026 at 18:25
Samaltman

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has pushed back against growing fears that artificial intelligence will replace human jobs, calling such concerns β€œoverly pessimistic” in the long run. Speaking on X (formerly Twitter), Altman emphasized that OpenAI’s goal is to build tools that β€œaugment and elevate” human capabilities rather than replace people entirely.

His comments come at a time when layoffs across industries, especially in the United States, have raised alarm. Several companies have linked job cuts directly to AI adoption, fueling concerns that traditional roles could become obsolete. A widely discussed example is King, the company behind Candy Crush Saga, which reportedly laid off developers after they created AI tools capable of generating game levels.

The anxiety has been further intensified by statements from Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic. Amodei recently suggested that AI could soon write nearly all code within the next 6 to 12 months. Such predictions have strengthened the belief that AI may dominate large parts of the workforce.

Altman, however, disagrees with this outlook. He argues that while AI will transform jobs, it will not eliminate the need for humans. Instead, he believes people will shift toward more meaningful and higher-value work. According to him, adaptation, not replacement, will define the future of employment.

Looking ahead, Altman envisions a world where AI reduces the need for intense labor, allowing people to live more flexible and fulfilling lives. While debate continues within the industry, his stance highlights a more optimistic path where humans and AI work together rather than compete.

France April 2026: Stable market (-0.3%), BEV sales up 41.8% to 26.2% share

1 May 2026 at 13:34

The Renault 5 is the best-selling BEV in France in April.

After getting back in positive for the first time in 5 months in March, the French new car market is back down -0.3% year-on-year in April to 138,339 units. The year-to-date tally after four months is down -1.6% to 539,895. Petrol sales are down -24.1% to 21,963, diesel is off -42.8% to 3,834, HEVs edge down -1.3% to 62,241, PHEVs drop -13.1% to 8,333 and BEVs surge 41.8% to 36,216 and 26.2% share vs. 18.4% a year ago in April 2025. YTD BEV sales are up 48.2% to 148,302 and 27.5% share vs. 18.2% over the same period in 2025.

Renault (-11.5%) struggles this month and is down to 16.8% share vs. 18.2% so far this year. In contrast Peugeot (+2.8%) edges up, but at 13.3% of the market it remains below its YTD level of 13.9%. Dacia (-5.3%) is in negative once again, yet less so than YTD (-14.7%). Citroen (+11%) is strong thanks to a renewed lineup, and is followed by Volkswagen (+8%) and a diving Toyota (-17%). Skoda is up 6.9% to a record 7th place, also reached in October 2025 and January 2026. MG is estimated to climb +44.8%, with Audi (+24.1%), Opel (+13.9%) and Nissan (+12.8%) also in solid shape.

Model-wise, the Peugeot 208 (+14%) returns to the pole position it last held last January, distancing the Dacia Sandero (+4.8%) down one spot on last month to #1. The new Renault Clio VI is still finding its groove but falls from 4% share in March to 3.7% this month. The Citroen C3 (+12.1%) satisfies with a 4th place and still ranks #2 year-to-date. Disappointing month for the Peugeot 2008 (-12.3%) down to #5. The Renault 5 (+50.8%) is back to the top of the BEV charts at #6 overall and #7 year-to-date. The Citroen C3 Aircross II (+146.2%), Nissan Qashqai (+61.1%) and Renault Scenic V (+44.5%) all impress, just as the VW T-Roc II breaks into the Top 20 for the first time at #17. The BYD Atto 2 (+655.1%) surges 89 spots on March to #42, the Renault 4 (+743.4%) is down 19 ranks to #49, the new Kia EV4 is up 38 to #52 and the Renault Twingo IV is down 32 to #79 as dealerships get filled up with demo models.

New Zealand March 2026: Toyota Hilux leads the way, Dongfeng Box lands at #12

1 May 2026 at 11:22

The Dongfeng Box has a great start in New Zealand.

New light vehicle sales in New Zealand soar 25.1% year-on-year in March to 14,910 units, leading to a Q1 volume up 12.5% to 36,910. In the detail, passenger cars gain 19.4% to 10,063 sales while light commercials shoot up 38.9% to 4,847. Toyota (+8.6%) can’t match the flying market and holds 18.7% share vs. 18% so far this year. Ford (+31.3%) manages an excellent score at #2 unlike Mitsubishi (-14.1%) at #3. BYD (+221.9%) is up 3-fold year-on-year to #4 and 5.8% share, that’s a new ranking record eclipsing its previous best of #5 reached in December 2023 and June 2025. Tesla is up 271% to #8 and Dongfeng ranks #14 with 2.3% share.

Over in the models charts, the Toyota Hilux (+76.7%) gets a big new generation boost and claims the top spot for the first time since last July. The Ford Ranger (+46.1%) is relegated to 2nd place but holds onto the #1 ranking YTD. The Tesla Model Y surges to third place with 3.2% share, its best ranking since topping the charts outright in September 2023. The Mitsubishi Triton (-15.2%) and Nissan Navara (+6.5%) ensure there are four pickup trucks inside the March Top 5. The Toyota Hiace (+115.3%), Hyundai Tucson (#7), Toyota Corolla Cross (+65.9%) and MG ZS (+50.8%) also shine below. Finally the Dongfeng Box makes a splash at #12 and 1.7% for its first full month of sales.

CNTXT AI introduces Emirati Arabic text-to-speech model

CNTXT AI today announced the launch of Munsit Emirati TTS, a text-to-speech model designed to generate real-time, human-like Emirati Arabic for enterprise and consumer applications. The release comes as voice technology continues to evolve rapidly worldwide, with recent launches from companies such as Google, OpenAI, and ElevenLabs pushing improvements in how AI generated speech sounds and performs. Yet despite this progress, many systems still struggle to reflect how language is actually spoken across regions.

Munsit Emirati TTS is built to address that gap. It enables systems to respond in spoken Emirati Arabic instantly, with a level of fluency and tone that feels natural to the listener. Whether it is a customer calling a bank, interacting with a government service, or speaking to a digital assistant, the experience is designed to feel closer to a real conversation than a scripted response.

At its core, the technology allows machines to convert written information into natural speech in real time. In practical terms, this enables digital platforms, call centers, and AI assistants to communicate directly with users, respond to requests, and guide interactions without requiring a human agent.

The model is designed with enterprise use in mind, allowing organizations to integrate voice capabilities into their operations. This includes sectors such as banking, government services, telecom, and digital platforms, where large volumes of voice interactions need to be handled efficiently and consistently.

In practical terms, this allows banks to automate customer calls while maintaining clarity and compliance, government entities to communicate with citizens at scale, and customer support teams to handle higher volumes of interactions without increasing operational overhead.

In blind testing with Emirati and Arabic-speaking listeners, 93 per cent of participants preferred Munsit Emirati over leading global models in naturalness, emotional expression, and dialect fidelity, placing it among the most advanced Arabic voice systems available today.

Beyond user experience, the impact is also operational. Organizations deploying AI driven voice systems have reported cost reductions of up to 20 to 40 percent, alongside improvements in response times and service efficiency, particularly in high volume environments such as contact centers.

The launch reflects a broader shift across the UAE and the wider region, where organizations are moving away from English-first or neutral voice systems toward solutions that better reflect local identity. For years, many voice-based services relied on imported models, creating a gap precisely where communication matters most. Native Emirati voice AI begins to close that gap, allowing institutions to speak to people in a way that feels more familiar and aligned with the communities they serve.

β€œVoice is no longer just an interface, it is becoming part of how services express identity,” said Mohammad Abu Sheikh, Founder and CEO of CNTXT AI. β€œFor a long time, the region relied on systems that did not fully reflect how people communicate. This changes that. We are building technology that speaks the language the way it is actually used, and that has a direct impact on trust, engagement, and how services are experienced.”

β€œMost voice systems were never designed for Arabic, and certainly not for Emirati,” said Shameed Sait, AI Director at CNTXT AI.Β β€œWhat we have built goes beyond generating speech. It reflects how people actually speak, the rhythm, the tone, and the cultural context behind it. The real breakthrough is making that work reliably in real-world environments and at scale.”

As voice becomes a more central interface across customer service, digital platforms, and public services, expectations are shifting. Performance alone is no longer enough. How technology sounds, and how it is experienced, is becoming just as important.

With Munsit Emirati TTS, CNTXT AI is contributing to this shift, enabling organizations to move beyond generic voice systems and deliver experiences that are both efficient and relevant to the markets they serve.
