Mercedes Looking For Help From Rival Customer Team

Mercedes fell from their pedestal in the Miami Grand Prix, needing to fight hard for the race win and missing out on the sprint race victory.

At the start of the season, Mercedes looked poised to dominate the current ruleset, with their power unit fantastic and their engine supplier status helping them get on the front foot for their customers.

However, McLaren, which is also powered by the same engine, made significant development gains in the U.S.’s first stop.

They brought a notable upgrade package, and it seemed to work to a T, with McLaren winning the sprint race and finishing on the two bottom steps of the podium.

In fact, Lando Norris felt like the team’s decision to let Antonelli do the undercut cost him a greater chance at a possible race win.

Seemingly, Mercedes was left so impressed with what McLaren was able to do that they are seeking help.

Mercedes engineers reached out to McLaren

La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that after the race, Mercedes engineers asked McLaren for more information about how to handle the latest software iteration of the power unit.

The report is a turn of the tables, as McLaren had complained about not understanding or getting clarity on certain aspects of the engine.

Now, McLaren has gotten a better handle, good enough to the point where Mercedes is the one asking questions.

The software’s understanding reportedly helped the car just as much as the upgrades.

Mercedes still holds the edge

While McLaren has made a step up, team principal Andrea Stella still sees Mercedes as the team that has the advantages.

β€œI think Mercedes, they still possess a couple of tenths advantage on anybody else,” Stella said.

β€œThis was most noticeable in the race and the Sprint. In the first Sprint section of the weekend, for some reason, Mercedes didn’t express their full potential, and it looked like the other people made bigger-than-expected upgrades.

β€œBut in reality, it was just Mercedes not optimising their potential.”

If McLaren continues to be aggressive in their upgrade profile, Mercedes will need to respond with their own improvements, and their engineering department has not been tested in that aspect.

Kimi Antonelli has "earned the right" to lead F1 title race, says David Coulthard

Mercedes Formula 1 driver Kimi Antonelli has "earned the right" to be leading the drivers' championship, according to former driver David Coulthard.

The 19-year-old driver took the lead of the championship after back-to-back wins at the Chinese and Japanese Grands Prix, becoming the youngest driver in the history of the series to lead the standings. His win in Miami extended his lead over his team-mate George Russell to 20 points.

As Russell struggled around the Miami International Autodrome, a track he admits is not one that plays to his strengths, Antonelli successfully converted pole position into another race win despite a difficult start.

"He's come of age," Coulthard explained on the Up To Speed podcast. "He may only be in his second season of Formula 1, but in dealing with not only the pressure of having Lando there ready to pounce, but he also had some technical difficulties with the paddle shift that meant he was having inconsistent downshifts.

"And he was calmed down by his engineer Bono when he had an elevated voice trying to figure out what the problem was. And I'm sure they'll have a conversation about that afterwards as well because in the end, the problem is the problem. You just need to get the information to the team and they will try and find a solution for you.

"So I think he's absolutely come of age. He has absolutely earned the right to be leading this world championship. And the expectation is now, and this will be uncomfortable for George, but the expectation is that he is leading the team and clearly in results.

"Now George has the experience, he has the quality, he has all of the skills to be able to take ownership of that back again. They both cannot win. Someone's got to be first. Someone's got to be second.

"And while they're trying to figure that out, look where McLaren were. Look at the improvements from Ferrari and Red Bull. It's difficult to win in what's perceived as the best car. There's been many examples where people haven't managed it."Β

The Audi Q5 is up to a record 9th place in Poland in April.

51,827 new cars hit Polish roads in April, a solid 10.3% year-on-year improvement. The year-to-date volume after four months is up 7.6% to 203,477. Taiwan April 2026: Toyota RAV4, Mercedes CLA among best performers

The Mercedes CLA is up to #14 in Taiwan in April.

New car sales in Taiwan skid -4.5% year-on-year in April to 31,407 units, leading to a year-to-date tally down -3.7% to 127,841. Toyota (+3.2%) defies the negative trend with a small uptick to reach 32.8% share vs. 31.1% so far this year. Lexus (-13.4%) is back up two spots on last month to its traditional 2nd place with 6.8% share, while CMC (-18.1%) is also up two to #3 despite a drab YoY evolution. The same goes for Mercedes (-21.8%) up six ranks to #4 but freefalling YoY. Mazda (+67.4%), Mitsubishi (+37.3%) and Ford (+33.9%) all go against the market with splendid YoY gains. Tesla (-95.7%) goes from 5,421 sales and 13.9% share in March (#2) to just 7 sales this month.

Model-wise, the Toyota Corolla Cross (+11.6%) reclaims the top spot at 11.4% share with the Toyota RAV4 (+24.7%) back in great shape at #2. The CMC J Space (-16.8%) rounds out the podium but suffers from a particularly high year-ago comparison base. The new Ford Territory confirms it is an instant blockbuster by reaching a record 4th place, also hit last February. The Honda HR-V (+64.4%) also shines at #8, with the Nissan Kicks (+39.9%) just missing out on a first Top 10 finish in 3 years at #11. The Mercedes CLA (+535.6%) surges to #14 thanks to the new generation.

Previous month: Taiwan March 2026: Tesla Model Y takes the lead with 11.6% share

One year ago: Taiwan April 2025: Sales down -11.2%, CMC J Space up to record #2

Italy April 2026: Leapmotor T03 repeats at #3, MG ZS up to record #5

Once again the ridiculously cheap Leapmotor T03 ranks #3 in Italy.

Outstanding month for new car sales in Italy at +11.6% year-on-year in April to 155,210 units, leading to a year-to-date volume up 9.8% to 640,083. Strikingly, private sales are up 19.3% to 78,583 and 50.3% share vs. 47% a year ago (+10.2% to 52.5% share YTD), the sign of a healthier market. Self registrations are up 14.7% to 16,105 and 10.3% share vs. 10% in April 2025 (+18.5% to 9.5% share YTD), Long term leases are down -7.2% to 33,112 and 21.2% share vs. 25.5% (down -4% to 21.1% share YTD), short term rentals soar 22.9% to 20,469 and 13.1% share vs. 11.9% (up 42% to 11.8% share YTD) and company sales edge up 4% to 8,079 and 5.2% share vs. 5.6% (up 1.5% to 5.1% share YTD).

HEV sales are up 24% to 76,808 and 49.1% share vs. 44.2% a year ago, including 25,851 full hybrids (+45.1%) and 50,957 mild hybrids (+15.5%), PHEVs surge 75.3% to 14,184 and 9.1% share vs. 5.7% in April 2025 and BEVs double their sales year-on-year (+98.6%) to 8.5% share vs. 4.8%. This means rechargeable vehicles are up 85.8% to 27,422 and 17.6% share vs. 10.5% a year ago.

In the brands ranking, Fiat (+31%) continues to catch up on poor year-ago results but can only muster a 10.3% share, by far its lowest this year. It holds 12.1% of its home market year-to-date. Toyota (+7.3%) returns to the 2nd spot it holds year-to-date ahead of Volkswagen (+1%). Peugeot (-7.5%) is up three ranks on last month to #4 and despite a YoY loss. Dacia (-2.3%) stabilises its sales at #5 but is still down -22% YTD. Audi (+15.5%) performs very well in the remainder of the Top 10 but drops to #8. Mercedes (+32%) is also strong at #12 while BYD (+171.7%) is up to #14, Leapmotor (+1300.6%) stays at #16 and Omoda+Jaecoo (+310.8%) breaks all its records at #18 with 3,857 sales and 2.5% share.

As for models, the Fiat Panda (-3%) falls further to 5.5% share, its lowest since last November, compared with 7.1% YTD. The Jeep Avenger (-19%) confirms it is now a solid 2nd best-seller despite a harsh YoY fall. Once again the event of the month is the third place of the €4,900 Leapmotor T03 (+1725.9%), β€œcheaper than a bike” says the advertising campaign, and having accumulated almost 15,000 sales since the start of the year (#4). Below the Dacia Sandero (+5.3%), the MG ZS (+38.7%) rallies back up nine spots on March to land at #5, simply the model’s highest ever monthly ranking in Italy. The Fiat Grande Panda (+3093.1%) falls again month-on-month to #6, could it have peaked already?
