Australia January 2026: Chinese (+62.9%) pull market up, Toyota (-22.3%) at lowest in 3 years

BYD sales are up 640.9% year-on-year in January.

New vehicle sales in Australia start the year in a timid way with a tiny +0.1% increase to 87,753 units. This is a counter performance as January 2025 sales were negatively impacted by a shipping port strike and biosecurity delays. Private sales edge up 0.5% to 44,150 while business sales drop -2.9% to 32,851 and short term rentals surge +47% to 5,258, denoting an artificial overall market growth. Government sales are off -11.7% to 2,364. Note this excludes Polestar, Tesla and heavy commercials. Excluding heavy commercials again, petrol sales are down -14.7% to 33,144, diesel is down a measured -3.7% to 24,439, HEV is up a shy 2% to 15,131 and we’ll see why shortly, BEVs shoot up 93.3% to 7,409 and 8.4% share (this is till below the 9.5% reached in January 2023. Finally PHEVs soar 170.5% to 5,161. 

SUVs edge up 0.7% to 53,666 and 61.2% share vs. 60.8% in January 2025 and 55.5% two years ago, light commercials fall -2.5% to 17,0995 and 20.5% share vs. 21.1% last year and 22.9% in 2024, passenger cars bounce back up slightly at +4.2% to 13,623 and 15.5% share vs. 14.9% in January 2025 and 18.3% two years ago. Heavy commercials are up 2.8% to 2,469. Looking at sales by State and Territories (excluding Tesla and Polestar), three are in positive: Victoria up 6.3% to 24,222, New South Wales at +2.3% to 26,305 and Australian Capital Territory at +2% to 1,160. The rest suffer, with Northern Territory hit the hardest at -18.1% to 628, Western Australia off -12.7% to 8,952, South Australia down -3% to 5,619, Tasmania down -0.8% to 1,424 and Queensland off -0.7% to 18,782. As for country of origin, Japan is down -24.6% to 22,943, China up a tremendous 62.9% to 20,921 and 23.8% share vs. 14.7% a year ago (impacted by biosecurity delays in Australian ports), Thailand is down 7.7% to 17,072, South Korea up 3.6% to 11,277 and Germany up 20.5% to 4,346.

The Mazda CX-5 is on the Australian podium for the first time in four years.

It’s a month to forget for Toyota at -22.3% year-on-year to 14.1% share, its lowest in almost three years: since March 2023 (13.6%) which was affected by stock shortages and quarantine-related issues. Mazda (-7.6%) is traditionally stronger in January, but not this year: it holds 7.6% of the market, just above the 7.4% it commanded over the Full Year 2025. Kia (+15.4%) posts a splendid score and climbs to #3, a ranking it last reached last September. Ford (-10.5%) is relegated to 4th place while Hyundai (+6.9%) is solid and rounds out the Top 5. BYD (+640.9%) surges (year-ago volumes impacted by shipping issues) to #6 and #1 Chinese brand like last month. Fellow Chinese GWM (+31.3%) also impresses but Chery (+105.8%) hits a record monthly volume for the 12th consecutive time! It is also at its best ever share (3.7%). Geely (#22) and Omoda Jaecoo (#23) both hit record rankings. We welcome Chinese van-maker Farizon at #52 with its first 7 sales.

Over in the models charts, the Ford Ranger (-20%) reclaims the top spot despite a harsh year-on-year fall, it distances the Toyota Hilux (-15.2%) also hit hard as the new generation trickles into dealerships. The Mazda CX-5 (+22.3%) is the surprise of the month: although due to be renewed later this year, it delivers a record third place (also hit in August 2020 and January 2022) and #1 SUV, a spot it held for many years before being toppled by the Toyota RAV4. Talking of which, the RAV4 (-65.4%) collapses to #10 as stock of the outgoing generation is dwindling in the wake of the new model hitting dealerships in March. The RAV4 will surely fall further down over the next few months as there won’t be any additional shipments of the old gen. Meanwhile the Chery Tiggo 4 (+119.4%) is back to an all-time high #4 also hit last November, and the Mitsubishi Outlander (-5.5%) is back up six spots on last month to #5 despite a YoY loss. At #6, the Ford Everest (+13.9%) once again outsells its archenemy the Toyota Prado (-51.1%) down to #14. The Hyundai Kona (+41.4%) is back up to an outstanding #7, with the GWM Haval Jolion (+39.1%) also very strong at #9.

NFL players ponder EMF injury risk theory: ‘Hopefully, we can make it out in one piece'

Some of the NFL's best talent is in the Bay Area for Super Bowl week. The question of whether they would ever consider returning to play for the San Francisco 49ers, and in turn practice next to an imposing electrical substation, was telling. 

Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride said plainly the viral EMF theory, if not convincingly disproven, will cost the Niners in free agency moving forward. Word of the alleged risks have begun to seep into opposing locker rooms. A non-negligible number of players may soon be aware. Real or imagined, the Silicon Valley Power Northern Receiving Station has become an optics nightmare for the 49ers.

"I think that's something that would deter people away from coming here, or vice versa, if it's not an issue, it would bring people in," McBride, named to the AP All-Pro First Team this season, told the Chronicle. "But I think it's something that needs to be looked at. … Obviously it's gotten a lot more traction recently so hopefully they will study it and get it figured out soon."

McBride has not been briefed on the science for or against the theory. And yet, concerns festered, all the same.

"Honestly, I just know being that close to it cannot be beneficial for your body," McBride added. "So if anything, it's a negative thing that they have there."

For a 49ers organization whose owner does not sound overly concerned about a growing perception problem tied to the transformers in their backyard, the genie is already out of the bottle. Jed York reiterated Tuesday the situation will be looked into, while in the same breath largely dismissing it, on the Up and Adams show.

"That's been there since 1987," York said. "Jerry Rice was there. It didn't seem to affect Jerry Rice. It seems like Jerry Rice can still play today. I don't believe that that's something that is a real issue. … I think we can debunk it."

The clock is ticking. Show host Kay Adams followed up by suggesting the 49ers would be in the Super Bowl if they were healthy. So what now? 

"If I knew, I would wave my magic wand and I would fix it," York said.

The issue remains squarely in the news this week with the Seahawks and Patriots preparing to play in Super Bowl LX on Sunday at Levi's Stadium.

As far as the science concerning any correlation between EMF exposure and soft-tissue injuries, plenty of experts have been interviewed over the past month, with wide-ranging opinions. The theory has been dismissed as nonsense while others have said, in effect, not so fast. Among those in the latter camp: Dr. David O. Carpenter, a professor at the University at Albany (State University New York) who has spent four decades studying environmental causes of human disease.

"I certainly do not think that magnetic fields from EMF exposure is the most dangerous hazard in our environment," Carpenter recently told the Chronicle. "But the evidence that there is some hazard is convincing to anyone who looks objectively at the data."

The 49ers' injury data is helping fuel the story after the substation was significantly expanded while Levi's Stadium, which opened in 2014, was being constructed. 

From 2013-21, the 49ers were the NFL's most injured franchise, based on adjusted games lost. In 2024, they led the league in the advanced statistic that measures the cumulative impact of a team's injuries. This season, they ranked third in the NFL with 74 regular-season games missed by Week 1 starters before All-Pro tight George Kittle suffered a torn Achilles in a wild-card win at Philadelphia.

That history is now a topic during Super Bowl week two years after the 49ers added to their puzzling injury history during Super Bowl LVIII. Linebacker Dre Greenlaw tore his left Achilles while running onto the field in the second quarter of their overtime loss to the Chiefs. That was strange, and so was this: Greenlaw tore what was believed to be his healthy Achilles after dealing with tendinitis in his right Achilles in the weeks leading up to kickoff.

A linebacker in this Sunday's game - Seattle's Ernest Jones - referenced the 49ers' attrition-stuffed past when asked about the electrical substation.

"Is that what they're saying is why (their) injuries are happening?" Jones said. "That's tough if that is the situation - if that is what's affecting them. That's tough. But we haven't really - we don't talk about it much."

Of course, it's notable that players on another team are discussing it at all. Patriots defensive tackle Khyiris Tonga overheard some of his own teammates joking about it: "I didn't know if it was real or not."

Two Patriots with impressive academic credentials have given the topic some thought. QB Josh Dobbs, an aerospace engineering major who graduated with a 4.0 GPA from Tennessee, doesn't think an EMF-injury association can be ruled out. Long snapper Julian Ashby was a physics major at Furman and recalled an EMF-banana experiment that yielded inconclusive evidence.

"There was an exercise we did once talking about radiation and electromagnetic fields, comparing everything to how much of that radiation you could get out of the banana," Ashby said. "So for using the banana scale, it kind of lowers my fears a little bit."

Among the Seahawks involved in the conversation is backup tight end Eric Saubert. The nine-year veteran missed practice last Thursday with a hamstring injury about two months after he suffered a strained calf that sidelined him for six games, the most he's missed due to injury in his career.

The cause of his soft-tissue issues? Saubert, 31, jokingly - half-jokingly? - speculated that his recent season in Santa Clara could be a reason.

"I played for the 49ers last year," he said.

Saubert admitted he had no clue if his lone season with the 49ers has played any role in his injuries this season. But he sounded as if he wouldn't complain if Sunday's game was moved out of Santa Clara. You know, just in case.

"I don't know if it's a coincidence, but I was around that substation a lot last year," Saubert said. "I mean, we joke around about it. I don't know if there's any actual merit to the science. I won't pretend to know. But, hopefully, we can make it out (of the Super Bowl) in one piece."

Pro Bowl linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair, another former Niner now with the Texans, said he never heard the subject broached during his tenure in Santa Clara (2019-22). But regarding current 49ers who recently lent some credence to the potential effects of EMF, including star running back Christian McCaffrey (Stanford alum) and veteran fullback Kyle Juszczyk (Harvard alum), Al-Shaair was curious to hear what answers they find.

"I'll be interested to know, too," Al-Shaair said. "The thing about Juszczyk and McCaffrey, those are guys who are very knowledgeable and they care about their body and try to get all the advantages that they can."

Patriots punter Bryce Baringer noted his mom placed EMF blockers on his phone and laptop when he was growing up, which gave him an awareness about the potential risks of excessive exposure. Baringer makes sure not to sleep with his phone near his head and he mentioned research suggesting a possible link between EMF and testicular cancer. He said he wasn't alone in being concerned about possible health issues.

"Some of the guys on the team have EMF blockers," Baringer said. "Just health and wellness these days, you never know."

Broncos left tackle Garret Bolles referenced the dangers of proximity to a substation, for a football player or a nearby resident, as common sense: "Obviously being around a power plant isn't healthy for you in the first place, with the things radiating off of each other and the metal and all the things in the air. I mean, it's not good to breathe."

The EMF dilemma facing the 49ers has become the butt of jokes in locker rooms outside of their own, but Bolles was not laughing. He opted for a more sober tone. One that underlined a call to action.

"I truly believe that there's some component to it," Bolles said. "Obviously, the Niners have had some issues. And that's concerning to all of us, because those are all of our brothers and our peers that we want to be healthy to make sure that they're making their bread and taking care of their families. Hopefully we can figure something out and make sure that organization is taken care of and watched over."

Sweden January 2026: Market off -18.3%, Volvo EX/XC40 leads, Kia K4 SW lands in Top 10

The Kia K4 SW ranks inside the Top 10 for its first month of sales.

New car sales in Sweden are down a daunting -18.3% year-on-year to 16,041 units. The decrease is due, among other things, to the large increase in ethanol cars in January last year, ahead of changed tax rules that came into effect on February 1, 2025. This resulted in a record high share of ethanol cars of 8.5%, which will fall back to 0.5% this year. It also resulted in a surprise third place of Subaru in the brands ranking. The share of plug-in cars is at 64.2% vs. 51.6% a year ago, with BEVs up 18.6% to 41.8% share vs. 28.8% a year ago while PHEVs drop -18.8% to 3,582 but keep their share stable at 22.3% vs. 22.7% last year.

Local behemoth Volvo (-25.9%) drops faster than the market to a weak 14.3% share to be compared with 19.3% in December and 17.9% over the Full Year 2025. Volkswagen (-35.2%) fares even worse to 11.5% vs. 15.9% last month. Toyota (+0.9%) is stable, a good performance in the current context and reaches 10% share vs. 8.1% over FY 2024. However the next two carmakers do much better: Kia is up 12.6% and Mercedes up 46.5%. Tesla (+26.4%), Skoda (+10.8%) and BMW (+0.2%) are also up in the remainder of the Top 10. Below, Seat (+120.8%), Citroen (+112.9%), Fiat (+98.1%) and Renault (+59.9%) are among the best performers.

The Volvo EX/XC40 (+115.1%) surges to the pole position for the second time in the past 3 months with 5.1% share, albeit below the 5.8% it commanded in December. Leader over the Full Year 2025, the Volvo XC60 (-54.8%) collapses year-on-year but still manages a strong 2nd place. The Tesla Model Y (+68%) bounces back up to #3, distancing the VW ID.7 (-42.7%) and Polestar 4 (+123.3%) faring in totally opposed ways. The Toyota bZ4X (+260.5%) is up 27 spots to break into the Top 10 for the first time at #8. The Kia K4 SW does the same for its very first appearance in the charts at #9, probably all demo sales as the model hasn’t officially launched just yet. Notice also the Renault 5 (#19), BMW iX1 (#22), VW Tayron (#24) and Mercedes A Class (#29).

Getting to know the Patriots: Cuddly snakes, Mexican food and low draft picks

We've got less than a week to get acquainted with the participants in Sunday's Super Bowl LX, so let's get busy.

The NFL has facilitated the process by making players available to the media four times. Tuesday's sessions were held at the respective teams' hotels in Santa Clara.

It's a lot like speed dating. You, the interviewer, hop around and try to get to know several players on a deep level, deciding if you like them, by chatting with them for a few minutes. Unlike with speed dating, these are not 1-on-1 meetings. More like 30-on-1. So you get what you can.

Monday, I hung with the Patriots, and the team was represented in the big tent by coach Mike Vrabel and 10 players, each player stationed at a podium.

It's not a perfect set-up. Before Super Bowl III in 1969, Jets' quarterback Joe Namath held court with a small group of reporters while he was tanning poolside at the team hotel. Now, if you were to chat with a player poolside, you would be tased and arrested.

The league got big and formal, but it's the same idea.

You're looking for impressions, clues, so that when you watch the game Sunday, you're watching real people. When you see Patriots' quarterback Drake Maye drop back to pass, for instance, you know a little about left guard Jared Wilson.

He likes snakes.

One reporter asked each player what they would do if they didn't play football.

"I honestly like snakes," Wilson said. "So, I'd probably do something to do with snakes."

That comment begged for a follow-up question, but someone else jumped in with a question about motivation or Mexican food, I forget which. With luck and perseverance, I knew, we might get Wilson back to snakes.

Wilson is one of two rookies on the left side of the Patriots' O-line. He was a third-round draft pick, No. 95 overall, and now he's helping protect the NFL's hottest young quarterback. Last season the Pats ranked 31st in pass blocking; this season they were No. 7.

It's all about inner motivation, Wilson said, in a disconnected response to a question I couldn't hear.

"You look at yourself in the mirror each morning," he said, "and that's who you go to battle with."

The snake question was left hanging.

Moving on, there's wide receiver DeMario "Pops" Douglas, one of the league's smallest players at 5-8 and maybe 190 pounds.

An interviewer was putting Douglas on the spot. What's his favorite Mexican food?

"I don't want to say the wrong thing," Douglas said, truly concerned. "I like Chipotle."

He must order the diet plate, because in a league of players with tree-trunk biceps, Douglas has the arms of a placekicker. Dude is small, which is a big part of his identity.

"In high school," Douglas said, "a lot of college coaches (were) coming in, they're like, ‘Man, your film's good, but your height, your height!' ... I was on the defensive side, coach told me, ‘Your height, you should go to slot receiver,' so I went to slot receiver and ... I did great. Broke some records, and still was overlooked because of height."

Douglas played at Liberty University, the Flames. Then he was drafted down in the Brock Purdy-esque wilderness. No. 210 overall (Purdy was No. 262).

I began to understand that the Patriots are built from spare parts. Wideout Kayshon Boutte, fourth in the league this season in yards per reception (16.7), was also a sixth-round pick, No. 187, another one of the Bargain Bin Boys.

Douglas, like Wilson, said he never thought about life without football. Maybe there's a life lesson here. Put all your eggs in one basket, you might wind up with a nice basket full of eggs.

"I never had a Plan B," Douglas said. "If I wasn't playing football, I don't know what I'd be doing."

Something with snakes, perhaps?

Back to Wilson, and my persistence paid off, I ducked in a question about snakes.

"I actually used to have a ball python," Wilson says.

His mother gave him the snake for his 12th birthday, then they moved in with Jared's grandfather, who had a house rule: no snakes. Ball pythons, by the way, are a non-venemous and cuddly breed of snake. Wilson has been pining for another one for 10 years.

"Once I move into a new house, I'm gonna get me one," Wilson said, eagerly, then paused. "I gotta talk to my fiancé, see if she's OK with it. I'm pretty sure she will be."

Sure. Absolutely. She'll be thrilled. Who doesn't like a cuddly pet? Hey, foolish optimism in the face of reality is what got the Patriots where they are today. Let ‘em have their dreams.

Red Sox Reportedly Sign MiLB Reliever, Extend Invite To Major League Spring Training

The Boston Red Sox have reportedly agreed to terms with veteran relief pitcher Kyle Keller, Will Sammon of The Athletic reported Tuesday night.

“Reliever Kyle Keller and the Boston Red Sox are in agreement on a minor league contract with an invite to major league spring training, league sources said,” Sammon wrote. “Keller gets $1.9 million if in majors plus $500K performance bonuses.”

The name might sound familiar to Major League Baseball fans, as Keller has had many stints around the league.

He made his debut in 2019, coming out of the Miami Marlins bullpen. The next season, he played for the Los Angeles Angels.

Keller saw his most action with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2021. He appeared in 32 games, throwing 33 1/3 innings. He allowed 24 earned runs and struck out 36 batters.

This was the last action the now 32-year-old saw in the MLB.

His next three seasons were spent on various different teams in the NPB baseball league, where he competed at the highest level in Japan.

During his NPB career, he threw 152 1/3 innings and posted a very respectable 2.42 ERA.

He is a two-ball pitcher. As a 6-foot-4 right-hander, he throws an overhand four-seam fastball followed by a drooping 12-6 curve.

According to BaseballSavant.com, he had an above-average fastball coming in at 94.5 MPH in his major league appearances. His curveball is also faster than league average at 81.4 MPH. It was a near 50/50 split with a slight usage edge going to his four-seamer.

Pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report to Fort Myers, Fla., exactly one week after Keller’s signing, Feb. 10.

Super Bowl Same Game Parlay: Patriots/Seahawks

Sunday, the Patriots and Seahawks will play Super Bowl 60 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. New England earned the No. 2 seed in the AFC playoff picture, then defeated the Chargers, Texans and Broncos en route to a conference title. Seattle earned a bye after finishing the regular season 14-3, then took care of business against the 49ers and Rams at home to punch their ticket to the big game. This will be the first time in 12 years that the Seahawks will be in the Super Bowl – the last time, of course, being the infamous Malcolm Butler game.

Kickoff this weekend is set for 6:30 p.m. ET Sunday on NBC and Peacock.

Sam Darnold has quietly put together a very strong month of football. In his last 3 games, he has committed only 1 turnover-worthy throw on 79 pass attempts (1.2%). A large part of his success has been how open his receivers have been, with offensive coordinator Klint Hubiak doing a masterful job scheming open the team’s pass-catchers.

New England’s defense has recorded 5 interceptions and 8 total takeaways in three playoff games – numbers that are likely due for some negative regression, as turnovers are often more noisy than they appear on the surface. At plus-money, this is a worthwhile inclusion in a Super Bowl SGP.

Leg 2: Kenneth Walker III Over 73.5 Rushing Yards

Kenneth Walker III struggled with his efficiency in the NFC Championship Game against the Rams, collecting only 62 rushing yards on 19 attempts. More importantly, however, he was clearly the team’s preferred option on the ground.

In the latest leak, tipster Digital Chat Station has revealed the model numbers of the upcoming Vivo flagships, which have reportedly received China’s SRRC (State Radio Regulation Commission) network access certification, confirming radio transmission approvals and support for the N79 frequency band.

Vivo X300 series’ model numbers emerge

According to DCS, the model numbers Vivo V2547A, V2547DA, and V2548A belong to the upcoming X300 series. It appears that the V2547A is associated with the Vivo X300 Ultra, while the V2547DA is its Beidou satellite communication version. The leak suggests that the V2548A belongs to the Vivo X300 Max. This is the first time this moniker has surfaced, and it appears to be the same device that was being referred to as the Vivo X300s in recent reports.

Vivo X300 Max: What to expect?

A recent leak by the same source revealed that the Vivo X300 Max will have a 6.78-inch OLED 1.5K flat display surrounded by ultra-thin bezels. For security, it will feature an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor.

The Seattle Seahawks brought aboard a key contributor prior to their matchup with the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LX.

Seattle, just days away from the biggest game of the season, announced that the activation of linebacker Chazz Surratt from injured reserve and placement of offensive lineman Amari Kight on injured reserve Tuesday.

Surratt, 28, signed with the organization before the start of the season, and appeared in 11 games prior to suffering an ankle injury that landed him on injured reserve on Nov. 26. Surratt played only seven snaps on defense, but was mainstay on special teams and is expected to immediately return to the lineup on Sunday,

Kight, 25, signed as an undrafted free agent after the 2025 NFL Draft, and spent most of the season on the practice squad before being promoted to the active roster late in the season — appearing in four games.

New England took a lot of people by surprise this season, including Russillo.

While the Patriots benefited from a historically easy schedule during the regular season, they now face a superior Seattle Seahawks team in the Super Bowl. New England is clearly less talented than the Seahawks and is listed as a significant underdog this week.

As an exercise, Russillo said he looked at the top 30 players in this year’s Super Bowl. He guesses roughly 18 to 20 are on Seattle, while 10 to 12 play for New England.

That’s a pretty significant gap, and it may decide the game.

“It’s gonna be tough for me to ignore that when I’m picking the Super Bowl,” Russillo added.

The Seahawks are the better team on paper, but the better team doesn’t always win. Just ask the 2007, 2011 and 2017 Patriots, all of whom lost to inferior teams.

The Paris prosecutor’s office announced that it is expanding a criminal investigation into X for alleged crimes, including the possession and distribution of child sexual exploitation material.

Jaguars’ 2025 positional review: Defensive tackle

This season was another year of disappointing play from the Jaguars defensive interior. For a while, Arik Armstead’s play kept the unit afloat, but a late-season injury would leave the Jags desperate for production from their defensive tackles when they needed it most.

On the season, the Jaguars’ defensive tackles ranked 23rd in Pressure % and 24th in Pass-Rush Win %, according to Pro Football Focus. But, as previously mentioned, the unit ranked dead last following Arik Armstead’s injury, collecting just 12 pressures and zero sacks over the last five weeks.

Armstead started the year off red hot and looked to be back to his former San Francisco self. Through the first 12 weeks, he totaled 41 pressures and 5.5 sacks. At the time, those figures ranked among the league’s best at the position. He even put the final nail in the coffin against his former ball club with a strip sack onto Brock Purdy in the closing minutes.

Unfortunately, a hand injury ruined what could have been a career year for Armstead. Prior to it, Armstead had averaged 3.7 pressures per game and 5.5 sacks in 11 games. After, he mustered just 1.3 pressures per game and zero sacks. He recorded just one pressure in the Jaguars’ Wildcard game against the Bills.

It’s tough to envision Armstead’s future in Jacksonville. On one hand, you could argue the Jags saw a resurgence before his hand injury. On the other, he isn’t getting any younger and the Jaguars are in desperate need of a future at the position.

Davon Hamilton

DaVon Hamilton has never really offered the Jaguars much as a pass-rusher. Over the entirety of his career, he has accounted for just 79 pressures and 5.5 sacks across 86 games and six seasons.

It’s no real surprise that Hamilton ranked 117th among the Top-127 defensive tackles with a 3.6% Pass-Rush Win %. Where Hamilton does shine is in run defense. In 2025, Hamilton ranked Top-25 in Run-Stop % for the third time in the last four seasons.

The question is, how much is that worth? His play was no doubt a huge factor that contributed to the Jaguars No. 1-ranked run defense, but does that warrant his $12.5 million cap hit next season?

The Rest

Unfortunately for Jaguars fans, there wasn’t much outside of Armstead and Hamilton this season. Maason Smith failed to develop as Armstead’s future replacement, and the remaining tackles were more of a revolving door of fill-ins. As a collective, the group totaled just 17 pressures and one sack.

Smith recorded 11 of those pressures, which was tied for second among Jacksonville DTs, but that’s a massive disappointment after 14 as a rookie. He was even a healthy scratch down the stretch, including the Wildcard game.

Someone to monitor is newcomer Matt Dickerson. He didn’t make too much noise on the scoresheet, but the staff seems to like him enough to make him a starter down the stretch. That said, he only recorded four pressures, but his Pass-Rush Win % was nearly twice as high as Hamilton’s (6.0%).

Samsung Wallet goes after Apple Pay with Amex cards

Samsung announced that its Wallet app will gain support for Amex (American Express) cards. Starting February 4th, Samsung Wallet users can utilize the app to make international payments through their Amex card.

Mastercard and Visa are already supported on Samsung Wallet, with Amex being the latest addition. This expansion will facilitate Samsung Wallet users with overseas payments, even without requiring a physical card.

Based on this collaboration with Amex, Samsung plans to expand the Wallet app’s global payment support coverage and further strengthen its competitiveness in the global markets.

Beyond that, it’s the latest attempt against Apple, which continues to expand the presence of Apple Pay in the markets where Samsung Wallet has a clear lead in the segment.

Italy January 2026: Fiat hits highest share in 3 years, places Grande Panda at #4

The Fiat Grande Panda is up to a record 4th place at home in January.

It’s a solid start of the year for the Italian new car market, with sales up 6.2% to 141.980 units. However private sales drop -3.8% to 81,585 and 56.9% share vs. 63% a year ago. Artificial sales channels pull the market up: self registrations soar 29.2% to 14,525 and short term rentals surge 188% to 12,460 and 8.7% share vs. 3.2% in January 2025. Meanwhile long term leases are up 3.2% to 27,526 and 19.2% share vs. 19.8% last year. Petrol is down -25.4%, diesel down -16.6% and LPG down -32.8%. HEVs gain 23.7% to 74,742 including 20,604 full hybrids (+32.8%) and 54,138 mild hybrids (+20.6%). PHEVs shoot up 152% to 12,502 and 8.7% share vs. 3.7% and BEVs advance 40.6% to 9,446 and 6.6% share vs. 5% a year ago.

In the brands charts, Fiat (+20.5%) finally posts a strong month at 13.5% share vs. 8.6% in December, its highest level at home since January 2023 (14%). Toyota (+0.3%) and Volkswagen (+3%) camp on their FY25 positions to round out the podium. Peugeot (-2%) is down year-on-year but up 8 spots on December to #4 ahead of Audi (+2.6%) at #5, its highest ranking since May 2024. Like in France and Spain, Dacia (-40.8%) is hit hard at #6. Below, Leapmotor (+594.4%), Omoda+Jaecoo (+357.1%), BYD (+329.6%), Cupra (+51.8%), Mini (+40.7%), Mercedes (+30.2%) and Opel (+11.3%) stand out.

Model-wise, the Fiat Panda (-0.2%) is stable year-on-year and accounts for 9.4% of its home market vs. just 5.8% in December and 6.7% over the Full Year 2025. The Jeep Avenger (+9.6%) is back up to a record 2nd place, also hit in April, May and September 2025. The Citroen C3 (-23%) falls heavily year-on-year but is up seven spots on last month to #3. Last year I highlighted the fact the Fiat Grande Panda had disappointed, finishing the year at a paltry #37. This month proves me wrong: the model is up 16 ranks on December to land at a record 4th position, beating its previous best of #8 hit last September. The Grande Panda sells at 95% in its HEV variant. The next few months will tell whether this was just a fluke or the start of a long term trend and a much needed 2nd success for the brand at home. Meanwhile the Toyota Aygo X (+72.3%) is up spectacularly to #5, simply the nameplate’s first incursion inside Italy’s Top 5.

Insider Reveals New Name Red Sox Have ‘Checked In’ On Amid Infield Search

The Red Sox are continuing to see potential infield additions come off the board, and MassLive’s Chris Cotillo has thrown a new name to watch into the mix.

“The Red Sox have checked in throughout the winter on Ramón Urías but haven’t showed more than lukewarm interest,” Cotillo wrote on X on Monday.

Urías was traded from the Baltimore Orioles to the Houston Astros last summer. He is under club control for one more season and can play third base, second base and shortstop. He is a versatile defender and won a Gold Glove in 2022 at third base.

Urías is not the only Houston Astros infielder the Red Sox have been linked to. Isaac Paredes has been a rumored target as well. Urías had just a .675 OPS last season, hitting 11 home runs for the second consecutive season. Cotillo wrote more about Urías in a story published before his report.

“Urías regressed with the bat last year to the tune of a .675 OPS in 112 games split between Baltimore and Houston but was still a capable defender at both third base (78 games) and second (26 games),” Cotillo wrote. “He also has historically hit very well at Fenway, logging a .326 average and an .881 OPS in 28 games in Boston. At this point, Urías can likely be had on a reasonable one-year deal.”

He was non-tendered by the Astros after the season. He could be a solid addition for the Red Sox. With Eugenio Suárez and Brendan Donovan off the board, a player like Urías could be the best option.

Red Sox make creative trade, opt to not pursue 49-HR slugger (5 thoughts) | Chris Cotillo

A very slow 10-day period for the Red Sox ended Sunday with a trade — Boston sent Jordan Hicks and David Sandlin to the White Sox in a salary dump that netted pitching prospect Gage Ziehl — and the news that Eugenio Suárez, perhaps the best position player left on the free agent market and a potential Red Sox fit, had signed a one-year, $15 million deal with the Reds. Here are five quick thoughts on the developments and the Red Sox, who are exactly one week away from spring training opening in Fort Myers next Monday.

1) The Red Sox are working backwards to solve their financial puzzle, and the work likely isn’t done.

When the Red Sox signed Ranger Suárez to a five-year, $130 million contract last month, their projected competitive balance tax (CBT) threshold ballooned to a number around $269 million, which is far more than the first threshold number ($244 million) and even exceeded the second threshold at $264 million. It’s clear Boston wants to enter the season short of that second threshold and potentially lower, and there are other pathways to (smartly) shedding money.

Moving Masataka Yoshida (and his $18 million CBT) hit would likely require the Red Sox to take on a good portion of his deal while attaching a prospect like they did with Sandlin and Hicks. A much easier path, however, would involve moving Patrick Sandoval, who will certainly draw interest from clubs if healthy. Sandoval is a bit of an unknown after missing all of 2025 as he rehabbed from Tommy John surgery but will enter camp on the outside looking in when it comes to the rotation competition. A couple of strong spring starts could force a pitching-needy club to offer a prospect while taking on Sandoval’s entire salary, which comes with a $9.125 million CBT hit in 2026. The Red Sox have 6-7 starters ahead of Sandoval and would likely be willing to move him.

Moving an outfielder like Jarren Duran or Ceddanne Rafaela in a bigger trade is another, albeit much less likely, way the Red Sox could move some money around. A Sandoval trade would get the club in the range of $252 million, making further additions (either in spring training or at the trade deadline) more palatable.

2) The trade unclogged the roster pipes, too.

The main objective of the trade with Chicago was obviously salary-related, as clearing $8 million of Hicks’ money (and getting relief against the CBT) threshold was smart business. But a secondary objective was also accomplished by Breslow, who cleared two 40-man roster spots with the move.

The Red Sox have strengthened the back end of their roster in recent months, leading to far fewer easy calls when it comes to who gets cut loose when a spot is needed. That Payton Tolle and Connelly Early’s big league debuts came a season earlier than expected locked up two spots that would have otherwise been open all winter. It was telling that Breslow had to trade utility man Tristan Gray, a potential contributor who was acquired in November, to free up a spot when Ranger Suárez’s contract became official on Jan. 21. Further additions would have required further tough calls.

Now, though, the Sox have two open spots and will gain a third early in spring training when Tanner Houck (recovering from Tommy John surgery) can be moved to the 60-day injured list. Moving Hicks also allows an easier path for other promising arms to contribute early in the season. Zack Kelly’s path to a roster spot is now clear and Rule 5 addition Ryan Watson is no longer blocked by Hicks, who is out of minor league options. The Red Sox also have room to make a free agent addition to the bullpen as well.

3) Boston opted for Ziehl over another package that would help the big league bullpen.

According to sources, the Red Sox and White Sox had serious discussions about a different-looking trade that would have sent Hicks and Sandlin to Chicago for Jordan Leasure, a 27-year-old reliever who had a 3.92 ERA (and 81 strikeouts) in 64 ⅓ innings in the big leagues last year. The Riverview, Florida product would have fit the Red Sox as a right-handed middle-relief option, joining Kelly, Watson and Greg Weissert as candidates in that role.

The Red Sox would have had to kick in more of Hicks’ salary to obtain Leasure, who has more value than Ziehl, who has barely pitched above High-A. In the end, the sides opted to do the deal that involved more cash and a lesser player headed to the Red Sox.

4) Craig Breslow wasn’t kidding when he said defense was important.

In his last meeting with reporters, Breslow was clear that he was prioritizing infield defense when assessing his next move. That bore out with the club’s decision to not meaningfully pursue Eugenio Suárez before he signed with Cincinnati.

In December, a source noted that the Red Sox had interest in Suárez, but only as a clear fallback option should Alex Bregman and some other targets not land in Boston. As time went on, agents around the industry speculated that Suárez’s market had not developed as expected and that he could be a candidate for a one-year deal. That’s all he got in Cincinnati, signing a $15 million guarantee that every club — including the Red Sox — could have done.

Still, even as other options fell off the board and Suárez’s market collapsed, the Red Sox didn’t meaningfully engage. As MassLive reported Sunday, they never made an offer. It wasn’t about the value or negotiations not lining up. It was simply about the Red Sox not wanting a player who, despite slugging 49 homers last season, strikes out at a high clip and is a defensive liability at third base.

5) What about Ramón Urías?

The Red Sox’ potential trade targets on the infield market are well-known with Houston’s Isaac Paredes and Chicago’s Nico Hoerner and Matt Shaw having been heavily discussed on the rumor mill. The Red Sox, even with Marcelo Mayer, Romy Gonzalez, David Hamilton and Nick Sogard in the mix as internal options for second base and third base, have begun to explore free agent alternatives, as evidenced by their pursuit of Dylan Moore, who they were “very involved” on before he signed with the Phillies, according to a source. Luis Rengifo is another available infielder.

Red Sox agree to minor league deal with veteran RHP (report)

The Red Sox added another pitcher to their spring training roster Monday.

Vinny Nittoli agreed to a minor league deal with Boston, 7 News’ Ari Alexander reported, adding the contract includes a non-roster invite to spring training.

Nittoli broke into MLB in 2021 with the Seattle Mariners. He also spent time with the Philadelphia Phillies, New York Mets, Athletics and Baltimore Orioles.

The 35-year-old has not pitched in an MLB game since 2024. He spent the 2025 season in Triple-A and compiled a 4.58 ERA in 39⅓ innings.

Nittoli, who will likely compete for a role in Boston’s bullpen, has a career 2.41 ERA in 18⅔ innings with 13 strikeouts and a 1.071 WHIP.

iPhone photography kit brings up to 12x optical zoom, fill lights, SD card slot and more

PGYTECH is taking a slightly unusual approach to mobile photography with its new RetroVa Vintage Imaging Kit, a Kickstarter project that turns recent iPhones into something that feels closer to a compact mirrorless camera than a phone with accessories bolted on.

The idea isn’t entirely new. Chinese brands like Xiaomi, Vivo and Oppo have already experimented with external camera modules and add-on optics, but RetroVa is one of the first attempts to bring that concept properly to iPhones.

The kit is designed for the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, as well as the iPhone 17 Pro lineup, with hints that future models could also be supported. It’s clearly aimed at users who are happy with their phone but frustrated by the limits of smartphone zoom.

There are two main versions of the kit. The entry-level option is a grip and case combo that adds a proper camera-style handle to the iPhone. It includes a two-stage shutter button, a zoom rocker, a control dial, and extra buttons that can be mapped to settings like ISO or exposure. The goal here isn’t just convenience, it’s to make shooting feel more deliberate and controlled, closer to using a dedicated camera.

The more expensive bundle adds a screw-on 2.35x telephoto extender. When paired with the iPhone 17 Pro’s 4x telephoto camera, this pushes the effective focal length to around 235mm equivalent, or 10x optical zoom. On the iPhone 16 Pro’s 5x lens, it goes up to 12x. The promise is cleaner results than digital zoom can offer, especially for wildlife, sports, or events.

One of the more interesting touches is the built-in microSD card slot for creators, which reportedly allows direct recording of ProRes video. There’s also a companion app with manual controls and a retro-inspired interface, though the grip itself has only a small battery meant to power its controls.

The Kickstarter campaign launched in late January 2026 and has already passed its funding goal comfortably. Shipping is planned for March and April, depending on the kit.

It’s still a crowdfunded product, so there’s the usual risk involved. But for iPhone users who want better zoom and more hands-on control — without buying a new phone or a separate camera — RetroVa is an interesting experiment.

The Red Sox loaded up their team equipment truck with 20,400 baseballs, 200 batting gloves, 200 helmets, 1,100 bats, 20 cases of bubble gum, and 60 cases of sunflower seeds. It will travel from 4 Jersey Street to Boston’s spring training facility in Fort Myers — a 1,440-mile drive.

Apple has uncharacteristically delayed the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. Its predecessor — M4 Pro and M4 Max — launched in November 2024, which means Apple is already past its typical window for announcing the successors. Now, a new rumor suggests the M5 Pro and M5 Max could finally arrive in March.

According to Weibo tipster Fixed-focus digital, Apple could finally unveil the M5 Pro and M5 Max about a month from now. The rumor doesn’t offer a clear explanation for why these chips are running late, especially when chatter suggests the M6 lineup could arrive earlier than previously expected. 

One likely reason, however, could be supply-side limitations. TSMC, Apple’s chip manufacturing partner, has reportedly been dealing with constraints that may have slowed down production.

There are also signs that Apple’s SoIC (System-on-a-Chip) packaging may have encountered production challenges. That said, the same leak claims the M5 Pro and M5 Max could end up being slightly cheaper to manufacture, though not by a dramatic margin. 

Any cost reduction would still matter, especially as the industry continues to deal with ongoing DRAM supply pressures.

SoIC could also help Apple address thermal concerns. Previous reports suggest that the standard M5 chip can reach temperatures as high as 99 degrees Celsius under sustained load. Improved packaging might help manage heat more effectively in the Pro and Max variants.

More interestingly, SoIC may allow Apple to separate CPU and GPU blocks on the die. This could open the door to more flexible configurations tailored to different workloads, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

As always, it’s worth treating this information cautiously. Apple has a habit of adjusting plans without warning. Still, if the M5 Pro and M5 Max do arrive in March, they’ll likely debut alongside new hardware — possibly refreshed MacBooks or even an M5 Max-powered Mac Studio.

In December and January I was lucky enough to visit Fès and Chefchaouen in Morocco. This was a great opportunity to observe the local car landscape and confirm the 2025 sales ranking is reflected in the streets of the country.

The first striking element when arriving in Fès is the omnipresence of red taxis, absolutely everywhere. They are almost exclusively composed of Dacia Logan 2 and Sandero 2 and have for sure contributed to the two nameplates’ high national volumes each year. The Logan and Sandero 3 are also seen but much less often.

Other much rarer red taxis include the Fiat Punto, Citroen C3, Citroen C-Elysée, Peugeot 208, Fiat Palio and Albea.

Taxis are blue in Chefchaouen, the blue city with its houses painted in striking blue colours.

Taxis are yellow in Ouazzane, halfway between Fès and Chefchaouen.

Outside of taxis, the Logan and Sandero also very numerous in the streets, reflecting the models ranking for the country. I noticed a slight advantage for the Logan in terms of private car numbers, illustrating 2025’s new sales ranking. The Logan 1 is relatively rare, compared to the 2 and 3.

Another observation is the quasi absence of Sandero Stepway variants, even though this is the favourite across Europe. There are also almost no Sandero 1 in the Moroccan streets.

#1 in the country from 2018 to 2020, the Dacia Dokker is indeed frequent in Fès streets, potentially the third most frequent model in the country alongside the Dacia Duster (almost no last gen though for the Duster).

The renewal of the “white taxis” fleet pushed the Dacia Lodgy up to #5 overall in 2020. White taxis are longer distance taxis, travelling on trips such as centre town to airport. Other taxis in Fès were tiny Suzuki Minivans (see above).

I could only see a handful of Dacia Jogger during the trip.

The Renault Kardian is an instant blockbuster in Morocco, already ranking #6 for its first full year in the charts and already seen often, even in small towns like Chefchaouen.

Reassuringly, the rest of the 2025 Top 10 is well represented in Moroccan streets: the Renault Clio, Express, Peugeot 208, Dacia Duster, Hyundai Tucson, Opel Corsa and VW Tiguan are all seen often.

As expected, pickup trucks are more popular in the countryside, where the Toyota Hilux is present but the Mitsubishi L200 almost holds a monopoly on this segment. As for vans, the Peugeot Partner, Citroen Berlingo, Renault Kangoo and Fiat Doblo are very successful there, with some towns completely devoid of any other type of vehicle.

The Chinese are here, but still very discreet. I only saw a couple of BYD SUVs, the Jaecoo pictured above and the Dongfeng Pickup above. To be fair, the best-selling Chinese carmaker in Morocco, BYD, ranked at a lowly #15 in December, followed by MG (#16) and Geely (#17). One thing is for sure, the Chinese invasion hasn’t started quite yet in Morocco.

As for the general car landscape, it is very French, with old Renault, Peugeot and Citroen models flooding the streets. There is also a big heritage of Fiat Uno 2 and Palio.
